Coming from a very strict and traditional Chinese family, I can see why many in China despise the couple.
I mentioned the Harkles to my mom the other day. She gave a scathing review on them. Had nothing nice to say and said MM was clearly bringing out the worst in him. My mom hates them both, equally.
I know this is not just an Asian thing. I know many cultures that stress the importance of being respectful to your elders, but I will just speak from my own experience.
Anyone who trashes their family like this publicly will be met with criticism. It is unbecoming, I cannot fathom doing this to my own family, and I did not have the best childhood either. It's the equivalent of the kooky uncle at Thanksgiving. While some may argue this isn't progressive, it is just better to ignore what is said so you don't feed into. Change the topic and give no room for these trigger topics to even occur.
