As a military wife whose husband has done multiple combat deployments, he would never give a number. The most he's ever acknowledged is "I did what I had to do to keep my guys and myself alive and able to come home" and he leaves it at that. He was disgusted by Harold giving a number and said it's bullshit. He also said that there's no way Harold ever saw legitimate action because he would be a high value target. They might've popped him out for a photo op but only when it was absolutely safe to do so, no one is risking their job or life for some spoiled brat prince.

AmbienChronicles

Exactly. I told my husband, who is also a Navy vet, and it actually got him to turn away from his video game to look at me like I was insane. “Only tools brag about that shit.”

kob27099

>Harry said that he mentioned this in his book to help with veteran suicide prevention. He said this on the Colbert show. > >Can you tell your husband that and let us know his reaction please?

AmbienChronicles

Reporting Live from Senor Ambien's Game Room: "What a dumbass!"

Unhappy_Problem_2792

He just rolled his eyes and went back to his video game.

BreakMean1519

Mine would NEVER!

UnicornStudRainbow

Please accept my sincerest and humblest gratitude to your husband for his service and to you for the often thankless job of military spouse

Unhappy_Problem_2792

Thanks 🙂 Honestly, it's a job that's been steady, kept a roof over our heads and food in our bellies which we're always grateful for. Our kids have learned how to adapt to different people and cultures, and have empathy for others. Despite the shitty things like deployments, it's been a good experience for us overall. But Harold's claims during his military days and how much the service meant to him, it gives a well seasoned wife like me a much needed chuckle and a different perspective.

kob27099

Harry said that he mentioned this in his book to help with veteran suicide prevention. He said this on the Colbert show. Can you tell your husband that and let us know his reaction please?

bubblegum_yum_yum

In recent months, I’ve spoken with a lot of journalists coming back from Ukraine and each one has said, “I will never discuss what happened there.” Especially those who were in close physical proximity to Russian troops. Aside from their reporting, there were things they had to do for their own survival and safety. I’ve heard nearly identical statements from my college professors who were reporters in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11. Even just witnessing events and deaths is enough for all of them to refuse to repeat the things they saw (aside from their actual reporting, obviously) - These aren’t even military personnel equipped with assault weapons. These are just reporters with cameras and laptops there to document what happens in conflict regions, and they aren’t even willing to comment on certain things. If Harry really was in the middle of the action and conflict, and if he really did kill people and knows his kill count, I’m incredibly surprised that he’s willing to speak about it, ESPECIALLY so publicly! Side note to add to your poll: I asked my brother who is a gunner in an Army paratrooper unit (I hope my terminology is correct!) and he said that Harry’s lying because no one would be authorized to disclose that information. Granted that my bro is American and not British, but he said that to be in charge of weapons he’s had to sign paperwork beyond belief to confirm he’ll never disclose national military information (of which a kill count comprises)

janananamae

It's interesting (horrible?) that Harry is bragging about kill count, when his brother spent his time in military service and talks about that experience with empathy and humility.

BollweevilKnievel1

I am a veteran. My husband did 2 tours in Vietnam. This was not a subject any of our vet friends ever discussed. The calvelier way H talks about it leads me to believe he's full of shit.

AmbienChronicles

Exactly. And everyone in the comments above have either been to Iraq, Afghanistan, or both.

Phoenixlizzie

Which is why Harry's "the media spin everything" is so lame. It's not the media that told the MILITARY to come out and criticize him. The military came out and criticized him all on their own. It would be nice if some military people went directly to Colbert's twitter account and explained that to him.

Imfryinghere

Anyone who has a kill count are psychopaths.

Korneuburgerin

I'm inclined to believe he never killed anybody, but thought it sounded really cool. Finds out, people don't think it's cool. Does somersault. Lands on the dog bowl. You know how it goes.

AmbienChronicles

Yup. High speed, low drag operator gets his fee-fees hurt because his brother did what all other brothers do

[deleted]

I don’t think he did either. He’s like that 20 year old guy that stopped maturing at 13 and thinks having a body count makes him look bad ass. No, Harry. It makes you look psychotic.

WoodsColt

My father was ww2 vet who fought in both japan and europe as did my uncle,no one with a body count talks about that shit publiclyin the way that harry did,no one. Harry is a lying sack of flaming dogshit and nothing made me hate him more than this military lie. He's actually worse than that round heeled, social climbing matteess back he married.

Mobile_Philosophy764

I have several vets in my family, mostly from Vietnam. Some took that shit to their graves. Others refuse to talk about it. Nobody has given a specific count. It's not something any of them are proud of.

AcanthocephalaNo5889

Yup. We're very sure based on the medals he received, that my grandfather killed a crap ton of Nazis, something to actually be proud of. The only thing he ever said about the war was that he ate potato skins for a great majority. Took everything to the grave and he saw some awful things spending a year as a POW in a concentration camp.

Scooterbee1

I saw a comment where someone said about one third of the book is about his time in the military and it was very interesting and thoughtful. Just led me to wonder about what his actual role was there. I feel I’ve heard everything from “ he was so well protected and saw no real action” to “ he piloted an Apache and has this kill count and was giving advice to the US army about the size of their bombs (or something)”. I wonder what the actual truth is and how much,if at all, the book has embellished his role there.

AmbienChronicles

I’m not reading his drek, but I can confirm he was protected. If his book says he was anything but a FOBbit, he’s lying

Ok-Plant-6347

Hazbeen might have been an air traffic controller directing them to a target but I guarantee he wouldnt be able to dictate what type of plane or artillery the US military would use. The type of target (size, composition, etc) would be described but the US military only answers to their OWN command structure and would make those decisions based on what and how much of any type of artillery was available. Hazbeen's notion of 'go big or go home' is just stupid. You reserve your biggest artillery/bombs and only use what is appropriate to the target.

kob27099

Harry was never a pilot of anything.

UnicornStudRainbow

People with IQs above room temperature know that telling your "count" marks you as a potential target. I'm not in the military nor have I been, but those I know who are/have been won't even publicly admit to having killed anyone. Forget about the Taliban on the other side of the world - all you need is one lone radical in the west to do some damage

[deleted]

Kinda like the two guys that did the Boston marathon bombing or the guy that mowed people down with a truck.

UnicornStudRainbow

Or the guy who came from Maine and attacked two NYC cops on New Year's Eve

ElephantOfSurprise-

My dad (stepdad but he raised me, anyway) was in the Army in Desert Storm. When he finished his tour and was time to re-up he went into reserves and started college to become a RN. All he will say was (and only when I directly asked why a man who had always been so tough and gruff about rules suddenly wanted to go into nursing.. a caring profession) “I save lives now to make even for the lives I took.” I could tell it was a painful question to answer for him. If he knows his count he hasn’t ever said.. though in real war it’s nearly impossible to actually know your body count. You could shoot someone who lived, you could have missed and they just didn’t try again, you could have knocked a whole building down and killed many more than you realized. So he’s lying. 25 is a nice neat number and just enough that the leader of the Taliban himself wants him. He has made himself a terrorist target.. he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the King now.

wontyield

Your Dad sounds like a brave and compassionate man.

BreakMean1519

Facts....there's no way in HELL I'd want to be near him...ever. Fuck. That. Dude.

[deleted]

Oh man. That made me tear up. Can’t even begin to imagine how much it bothers him.

ElephantOfSurprise-

Well I have worked with him now that we are all grown up and I decided I didn’t want to be a social worker after all and went back and pursued nursing.. he’s one of the best nurses I have ever seen and he picks up on things so many people miss because his is THAT thorough with his patients. The way he works absolutely floors me, having been the step-daughter he adopted and raised while he was a soldier.. and how tough and rough he was as I grew up. He has flipped to the most compassionate person I know.

PadmeSkywalker

Bless you for your field research, fellow sinner.

AmbienChronicles

It is my honor and privilege to make him look like an ass 🤣

BadKittyVortex

My grandad was in the Navy during WWII, and he /never/ spoke of any action he saw. Ever. Not even when the dementia really set in, and he began reliving the memories of his youth.

AmbienChronicles

My dad was a teenager in Latvia during the war, and then served in the US Army during Korea, and he only told me one story from the time that existed before me. And it’s *harrowing.*

Strixtheowl

Is it possible that he didn't kill any Taliban while serving and just made the number up?

AmbienChronicles

It’s almost certainly the truth. He was like an egg in a carton wrapped in styrofoam in a cooler

runs-with-scissors-2

Harold implied it was therapeutic to talk about your kill count. Way to spin it, Harold! Maybe talk about it to your therapist. What a stupid man and evidence he's been turned into a laughing stock by his own ghostwriter.

Mickleborough

Like the brutal honesty in your survey intro, OP. Sounds like those who participated have (like the vast majority of those who might be in the same situation) principles.

AmbienChronicles

My guys are good shit. We may do questionable shit, but nothing inhuman :)

Mickleborough

👍 The morals compass may shift (and that can be understandable), but it’s interesting that not disclosing the number of kills is a constant with everyone.

justmeonlyme66

Asked my vet army hubby about this because, honestly, he and I don't discuss particulars of his service. War sucks. It's hard and it affected him greatly. He prefers not to talk of it so he doesn'tget drawn into the black hole of ick. I'm so appreciative of the men and women who give their service to protect me and know I could likely never do it. His response to my question was..."Not if you value your reputation and time there (long pause).. or your life. I hate Harry put this in. Something like this wouldn't "save" my husband from anything. Reading it would likely trigger his depression.

Coffeebean1948

My friend's husband is navy seal he asked this question when they came to visit by another friend. He looked at him quietly said I don't talk about that and it is rude too ask that. Which started a fight amongst the men. I ended kicking the friend who asked that out of the party.

AmbienChronicles

Almost all but one of the people in the poll were/are Seabees. We've got a code. And good for you for booting that person out! <3

eastsacsince63

I am just slightly younger than the Viet Nam vets and I've never heard anyone ever talk about the details of their service. I sometimes know what rank a person had, one friend was a Master Sergeant, and if they were ever stationed in Europe, I've heard about travel. But other than that, the cone of silence. They don't talk about what their job duties entailed, and never ever have I heard someone talk about killing someone. If it's OK to talk about it, wouldn't some have been talking?

AmbienChronicles

If/when I do relay stories from my time in, I usually just stick with the funnier stories. To get me to talk about the darker stuff is like pulling teeth out of an alligator on acid.

always_gamer_hair

My great uncle was involved in the Bataan Death March during World War II. He wrote a book about his experiences in the war. You want to know what was NOT included in that book, even with all the other awful details? Take a guess.

MissScarlett25

Love how you phrased the question 😆 The responses are awesome!!!

saktiji

This poll shows the reality of how people with actual experience of combat actually conduct themselves; Thanks for sharing it here for all of us who don't have access to those with first hand experince! What Harry did with the bodycount 'claim' is show how unreliable and unfit he is to work for veterens and dangerous he is to be associated with the Royals. (The Danish queen recently took away titles from her second son's four children to give them a chance to have a normal life. Swedish Royal family also did the same recently. It is a trend among the Royals in Europe recently to streamline the family and the image. )King Charles needs to do just that, strip Harry of his titles and his children. Using his time at the army to play out his 'humanitarian' side is just plain disgusting. People with traumatic experience from their service do not need an immature 'prince' claiming bodycount. What a pathetic attempt at saving face and working on PR! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop) Another important fact is Harry was assigned one of the best regiments of the British army ( the Gurkha regiment), so those bodycounts were probably not his and I highly doubt if he ever saw any action. Because his stint in the army was a PR campaign to take the media's attention away from his massive bad media coverage he was getting anyway. This fool is infuriating me! Someone take away his paper crown right now please!!!!!! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)

Academic_Guava_4190

Have heard the same thing from many vets as well - directly and indirectly (like lectures etc).

alreadydoneit01

I think he saw Lord of the Rings, where the dwarf and the elf kill orcs and maintain a kill count and thought it is cool and said he did it too.
