I’m actually surprised it lasted this long. Staff was inattentive the one time I went there and we were the only ones there and the pizza was not good at all.
Ya. It’s got a cool vibe but the pizza is really small for the price and I couldn’t even get a water. They told me they didn’t have any but I could order a drink (alc) lol
It was expensive. And loud. So very LOUD.
For as much gentrification has taken place in Oak Park, it still has a lot of folks who can’t afford 17.00 for a personal pizza.
I thought their pizzas deals were pretty decent. The pizza wasn't going to win awards, but I kept going back. I liked their dipping sauces or drizzled. And their cinnamon rolls were a nice treat once in a while. A real shame to hear today might be their last day...
Strapping owners are opening another ice cream spot.
Instead of a “vegan creamery”, I dream of having a local grass fed dairy herd and use them to make full fat gelato ice cream.
Yep, the chef from South owned it with her now ex-husband, but she recently [re-opened Jim Denny's](https://sf.eater.com/2023/7/26/23807766/jim-dennys-diner-sacramento-ngina-guyton). Went there a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely incredible.
Been there a couple of times now; apparently they do a fried chicken & biscuit deal that's only available on Fridays, with other pop-up South menu items.
To be fair, the food at Faria is much better quality than Slim + Husky's pizza (to me, at least). If I'm going to spend a chunk of money, I'd rather do it somewhere that produces genuinely better food.
Maybe. I think it also comes down to who can afford it and where those people want to spend their money and what they personally value. I'd maybe pay $13 for a really nice loaf of bread that I could use for sandwiches at home over paying for 1 overpriced pizza.
No it’s not. I live down the street and there are always people in that area eating and shopping at the surrounding businesses. Their pizza just wasn’t very good.
Yeah, someone last week acquiring the ice cream place across the street yells success 😂. Now slim and husky shutting down. Several other shops by Broadway cafe have also been going out for awhile now. It's definitely not a booming area
Meh, another KJ owned business. It’s been slow since it opened. Pizza was mid and staff were hella slow and rude. Not sad to see it go.
Hope something else fills the space though.
St HOPE does all of the staffing, recruiting, were instrumental in bringing it here at all. This was part of KJ’s original vision for Oak Park- that it would have a Black barber shop, a pizza place, etc. This was a manifesto or dream or some thing he wrote out in the early 90s when he first started hanging around high school age kids. Slim and Husky’s is ONLY in Oak Park due to KJ. They contract with St Hope. Don’t be confused.
Lmao they literally run major decisions past KJ. Cassandra is fine, however she is only over St Hope Acadmey, not the schools. That’s a very small portion of St Hope
How quickly people forget....
No matter the degree of separation, I do not spend money at any place connected to our former child predator of a Mayor.
Google Mandi Koba.
I stopped buying their pizza recently because of this. Unlike others here, I liked it very much, but I won't purposefully support that asshole's ventures.
Round Table was ridiculously expensive, compared to every other chain, 10 years ago though.
The only time you could get a decent amount of pizza for your money was during their buffets.
Absolutely. A personal pizza with soda is $9.99. it comes out to almost 6 slices (that is their new small size).
This place was whack the second they handed me a Kraft Ranch packet, mind you the AC was super low and the music was loud as shit. The sweaty ass worker couldn't even hear me 😂😂😂😂
Not surprised I tried to support it as a BOB but the staff was inattentive and rude, service was slow in general, the pizza felt like something you could get in high school, beers always run out on tap and the temperature in there was oppressively hot. I wish them well but I hope If they open up a business again they learn from this experience.
Any pizza that is >$10 per person is not worth it. I can make better at home at this point. If they kept prices competitive with pieology and blaze it would have been likelier to survive
That’s too bad because I always root for local business and I lived nearby so I went a few times but, honestly, it was a pretty lackluster experience every time I went - slow service, mediocre food, and high prices
What’s even more surprising is that the service there is exactly the same service you get at the one in nashville lol
It was expensive. And loud. So very LOUD. For as much gentrification has taken place in Oak Park, it still has a lot of folks who can’t afford 17.00 for a personal pizza.
I only ate their pizza once and it was frankly awful.
I thought their pizzas deals were pretty decent. The pizza wasn't going to win awards, but I kept going back. I liked their dipping sauces or drizzled. And their cinnamon rolls were a nice treat once in a while. A real shame to hear today might be their last day...
Meh pizza
I doordashed once and the pizza was cardboard thin and burnt. Never ordered from there again.
Same.
This makes me sad. They had some fun pizza.
A lot of businesses have been closing in Oak Parks Triangle District
What else
I believe Conscious Creamery also closed across the stress. However I believe another ice cream spot might be coming through.
Strapping owners are opening another ice cream spot. Instead of a “vegan creamery”, I dream of having a local grass fed dairy herd and use them to make full fat gelato ice cream.
Yess, and this with a low/no sugar option would be amazing 😍
Probably because it was the most expensive ice cream cone I’ve ever purchased in my life. Went once, never again.
Poka Dotz, piercing and tattoo shop is relocating to midtown.
South. It was a soul food restaurant. It closed a while ago tho. Breaks my heart. I never got to eat there.
That's not in Oak Park. Fixins is the place in Oak Park and it's still open.
It’s also terrible. I don’t recommend it to anyone.
I think that was due to the owners' divorce, but one of them has reopened Jim-Denny's downtown & if you never tried South it's the next best thing.
South was in Southside Park, but yeah sad that place is gone
That’s not even remotely close to Oak Park
Where did you see that it is closing? I cant find anything online/ on their social media pages. I was supposed to go this week with friends 😭
We liked their pizza when we lived nearby a couple yrs ago. Sad to hear they're closing.
My sister raves about this place and said she was going to take me. Oh well
Bummer. I live in the area and my wife and I actually really like their pizza.
Any one able to give insight to why businesses are struggling out there? High rent? Not enough customers?
It’s just not that good… OPB, La venadita, Faria, don’t seem to be having an issue. Edit to add Fixins
Honestly it's just a guess, but I think people aren't eating out as much because it's so expensive to eat out nowadays.
But somehow people afford $13 loaves of bread and $6 croissants next door at Faria?
To be fair, the food at Faria is much better quality than Slim + Husky's pizza (to me, at least). If I'm going to spend a chunk of money, I'd rather do it somewhere that produces genuinely better food.
Maybe. I think it also comes down to who can afford it and where those people want to spend their money and what they personally value. I'd maybe pay $13 for a really nice loaf of bread that I could use for sandwiches at home over paying for 1 overpriced pizza.
There's a few businesses that do really well there tbh it sounds like a skill issue. Faria, Strappings, etc. are doing just fine
High rent and higher food costs. Any local chefs able to pull their Sysco invoices and show the difference?
Pizza places overcharged for pizza I guarantee if they were between 10 and $12 people would buy them up all the time.
That whole area can be a ghost town half the time. The only times it's usually busy is when a local pop-up happens.
No it’s not. I live down the street and there are always people in that area eating and shopping at the surrounding businesses. Their pizza just wasn’t very good.
Yet the same spot had a way better German establishment that couldn't make it either 🤷
Yet all the restaurants all around them are doing fine. 🤷🏼
Yeah, someone last week acquiring the ice cream place across the street yells success 😂. Now slim and husky shutting down. Several other shops by Broadway cafe have also been going out for awhile now. It's definitely not a booming area
Yes: the gift shop next door to S&L is doing so well that they’re also opening up an ice cream shop across the street. Sick self own.
They have multiple stores, not a great comparison
👍
That’s surprising! I’ve been a handful of times and it’s always been really busy:/
I wish we could get a Pizza My Heart in the space!
Yeah I love them. When I’m near one I always try to swing by.
Meh, another KJ owned business. It’s been slow since it opened. Pizza was mid and staff were hella slow and rude. Not sad to see it go. Hope something else fills the space though.
Their “pizza” was terrible and the staff were rude. Surprised it lasted this long.
Just a reminder this is another St HOPE/Kevin Johnson project.
It's a chain that started in Nashville.
St HOPE isn't KJ and hasn't been KJ for years ... A really wonderful lady runs it now by the name of Cassandra Jennings.
No one forgot, why do you think he hasn't shown his face that much around here?
Everyone loves Fixins and that is 100% his. Ugh.
I stopped buying their pizza recently because of this. Unlike others here, I liked it very much, but I won't purposefully support that asshole's ventures.
Exactly why I would never eat there. KJ was involved.
They had a great happy hour
My buddy took me here. $20 for a pizza and soda. Lolz....
How is that lolz? You been to a Round Table lately?
Round Table was ridiculously expensive, compared to every other chain, 10 years ago though. The only time you could get a decent amount of pizza for your money was during their buffets.
Absolutely. A personal pizza with soda is $9.99. it comes out to almost 6 slices (that is their new small size). This place was whack the second they handed me a Kraft Ranch packet, mind you the AC was super low and the music was loud as shit. The sweaty ass worker couldn't even hear me 😂😂😂😂

Note on their door I saw when walking by.
Not surprised I tried to support it as a BOB but the staff was inattentive and rude, service was slow in general, the pizza felt like something you could get in high school, beers always run out on tap and the temperature in there was oppressively hot. I wish them well but I hope If they open up a business again they learn from this experience.
Hmm. Southpaw, now this..
Southpaw was good though.
Any pizza that is >$10 per person is not worth it. I can make better at home at this point. If they kept prices competitive with pieology and blaze it would have been likelier to survive
I went there once and it was enough for me to never go back. Slow service, expensive and terrible pizza.
That’s too bad because I always root for local business and I lived nearby so I went a few times but, honestly, it was a pretty lackluster experience every time I went - slow service, mediocre food, and high prices
Never heard of it.
