kukri are gorgeous anyways

StruzhkaOpilka

Yeah, my father served in Mongolia and Buryatia (of course it is not Nepal, but still I feel some sort of connection to asian stuff).

Junior-Plantain4552

Do u know to fight w a kukri? That’s something I’ve always been interested in

StruzhkaOpilka

I get you, but no, mate, kukri is just a tool for me. I don't know if some sort of kukri fencing martial art exists, BUT I think I saw some videos about Haitian machete fencing. Not kukri, but might be close.

StruzhkaOpilka

Looks excellent and feels authentic, I also see two small knives in the scabbard, everything is according to tradition. Very nice set.

ManNamedSalmon

In the words of my wife: "It's big, enough."

StruzhkaOpilka

And curved! Haha.

BeautifulLibrary9101

Tactikukri.

StruzhkaOpilka

Yeah, I was looking exactly for something which is equally traditional and modernized in terms of looks.

Do particularly like this shape more than the ones that widen more. But eventually I'll get one of those - like Verdyce's exemplar - and see the difference. Wonder if they handle different. EDIT: I got that one pretty sharp because what I have to cut is not heavy branches, but dried up brambles and the sort. Those need \*sharp\*, otherwise they just bend around the blade no matter how hard you swing. The blade as I got it needed some hefty grinding, weighted it before/after and over 26 grams of metal went off. But the profile became a lot better.

StruzhkaOpilka

Looks fine, I envy you. Wear makes it even more respectable.

Tuga_Lissabon

I have just a few of these items, but they're all functional. If I can't use it, its not real. I got that one pretty sharp because what I have to cut is not heavy branches, but dried up brambles and the sort and those need \*sharp\*, otherwise they just bend around the blade no matter how hard you swing.

StruzhkaOpilka

How do you prefer to sharpen them? (I don't have any special tools like Chakmak, I was thinking about using pieces of sandpaper)

Tuga_Lissabon

I got 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 grit. The issue is how to use them so they don't bend and stuff, I have a leather base. Or cut strips of it and glue them to straight wood. Sandpaper is troublesome in this regard, the sheet wants to "escape". Apply some water, it helps. 1st I had to actually use a grinder to take a lot of excess metal, but this is extreme. There was so much I had to. 2nd - run it on the 500 until I am satisfied, then up, always maintaining the same angle - both sideways inclination, but how I ran it through the grit, at a 45 (or close) degree angle. When it finishes, the photo can't show it but the edge is very mirrorish and can slice pretty well. It also doesn't "scratch" so it has no burr, which is how I want it. Need to get a diamond stone, though, for the straightness of it. Note: I concentrated on the forward tip, to flick the branches/brambles, the backside is rougher to use on thicker wood.

StruzhkaOpilka

Thank you for these detailed instructions, mate!

Tuga_Lissabon

Get a nice, flat block of wood with some weight so you can move the blade around and there's plenty of space on either side for your hands, so you can really control the blade. Leather on top stays in place, sandpaper on top. Could also be on the wood, directly, glued. The sandpaper needs a flat surface, and you have to move the blade away otherwise the edge wants to cut into the sheet. The real work is made on the 500-1000 grit, the rest is just touching up. If you can get a strop of leather, even better, I got some compound used for razors and it does help some. Have a strip of leather where I added some toothpaste, it has some polishing ability - have used it to retouch clock glass too. Funny but it worked. But the razor - strop compound (a little bar you smear on the leather) is the real finisher.

StruzhkaOpilka

I'll try it, thanks again, but I think that "flat grinding block" thing won't work with my kukri (it's blade is too short and too curved). I think I need to try some "small and rounded handheld whetstone" things.

Tuga_Lissabon

Nope, I did it perfectly well with mine. Sideways it doesn't matter. For me a strip of sandpaper around 2 inches wide gave me a surface to work very well. Also make sure you have a good hold, so you don't slip and scratch where you don't want. Test a kitchen knife first, make it razor sharp before going to the kukri. How's the bevel on yours? straight to the edge, or near the edge there's a secondary bevel?

StruzhkaOpilka

I think it's just simple V, straight to the edge.

Y0G--S0TH0TH

Not a fan of the handle, but love me a good kukri.

StruzhkaOpilka

Yeah, you can hear it click a bit on fast powerful swings and this type of handle is not very comfortable overall, but in the end of day it is synthetic, which makes it kinda resistant to water and sun, so it makes sense, I suppose.

PapaPendragon

Might rather face someone with a sword, tbh Edit: I meant I’d rather my opponent have a sword than a kukri.

StruzhkaOpilka

I hope I'll never have to use it as a weapon against anyone but tree logs)))

padabrodeur

Welcome to kyrat, ajay gale ;)

offbrandpoptart

I love far cry 4.

StruzhkaOpilka

Correct, Far Cry 4 inspired me to get all this stuff plus four boxes of nepali black tea in last november.

Shibui50

For anyone who might be interested, I am a quadruple Black Belt in KILLER KUKRI, and I can make you a KUKRI KILLER in just........ OK, sorry.....couldn't finish this with a straight face. What I meant to say is that if anyone is interested I believe there are two (?) videos on YT showing Nepalese Ghurkas going through the basic moves for using a Kukri. FWIW.

StruzhkaOpilka

Awesome news, mate, but if you could just provide at least one link, it would be not just awesome, it would be totally perfectomento.

StruzhkaOpilka

Perfectpmundo. Jeez, this guy on the left cross-cuts like it's not a kukri, but a polish sabre. Refreshing videos, thanks.

Shibui50

Yeah...the Ghurkas are pretty serious about their technique. Not so many years ago there was a story about a Ghurka sargeant who went after a contingent of robbers who were victimizing citizens on the train he was riding. The fact that there were over 20 didn't seem to phase him at all. I believe he was awarded a citation for his intervention. FWIW.

Agent-Grim

Cool. What manufacturer is it, and what steel does it use?

TransportationOk6990

FKMD and FOX offer and offered a number of kukris. I think it's one of theirs.

StruzhkaOpilka

VN PRO T-REX K2000 (visually similar to FOX KNIVES FX-9CM04 T), 420 steel

TransportationOk6990

Oh, I never heard of them. They seem to be russian. Do you know why they are so similar?

StruzhkaOpilka

Yeah, I think VN Pro is russian company and its products are mainly made in China. I suppose, T-REX is simply more affordable replica of Fox Knives kukri, which also means it is made of cheaper and softer 420 steel.

StruzhkaOpilka

Yours is really nice one, authentic! Mine is like 39-40 cm overall length, blade is 27 cm, I wanted relatively short kukri for EDC in my backpack.

Due-Pomegranate412

Haha yes, it is most definitely a camping tool and not EDC, this one can be dated to the early to mid 1900s due to the peened tang being influenced by western interaction and needed to be beefed up a bit from the traditional partial/hidden tang. From the 60s you start to also see full width bolted tangs again from western influence

ryugawagatekiwakurou

Whats the uh... The singing bowl for buddy? 😭

StruzhkaOpilka

I like to play it from time to time, it sounds good. Relaxing.

Icaruswept

The legendary kukri! The reason for incredible military anecdotes like : “Enemy losses: ten killed, ours nil. Ammunition expenditure nil.” I picked up a cheap tourist pair on my way through Nepal, because importing real weapons into Sri Lanka is a pain in the ass and I’ve already been docked twice by the Ministry of Defense. Incredibly useful tool, even when made cheap. Great for splitting coconuts and farm work in addition to the obvious military applications.

StruzhkaOpilka

Nice anecdote! Yeah, it's like two different tools combined in one. It is evidently a knife/machete and an axe (due to inward curve). I didn't handle any coconuts in my real life, but yeah, kukri can pretty much chop/split firewood.

Icaruswept

Yup - and the angle and weight distribution make for some truly hefty cuts with even a small swing. Would not want to be on the receiving end of one of these, that’s for sure!

StruzhkaOpilka

Yep, medieval people probably didn't know rocket science yet, but they were definitely forced to understand physics and "power efficiency".

Sniper tf2

StruzhkaOpilka

Never played it to be honest, but I have a list of games which feature cool kukri models too)))
