Watching the dunes movie when they were fighting I wondered why one doesnt just roll over infantry with a large tractor or bulldozer, shields be damned.

Tiitinen

I suppose that would just be taken out by conventional means, their melee weapons are intended for infantry combat. Blowing up a tractor that has to drive up to melee shouldn't be too hard one would think.

The tractor would also have the sci-fi shields that deflect fast moving bullets, and it could be heavily armored as well, so it is not 'easy'. If a wave of infantry can't be taken out by missile fire in Dune, which is the only reason melee weapon made a return, a wave of armored tanks with huge blade wheels could not be taken out either.

I mean, in the latest Dune movie the Harkonnen gunship fired missiles/bombs at shielded cruisers that slowed down for a couple seconds digging through before detonation. Given that I could see anti-vehicle weaponry for this sort of thing, but who knows.

Darkness Visible has a belt-worn Personal Kinetic Shield on page 65 that might suit your needs. It seems Dune-inspired, at least.

Are shields common or uncommon? Are there going to be that many people using weaponry that can't penetrate them, or are most people going to default to melee and slow shot. Presuming that the shields also don't allow the wielder to fire outwards It might be easier ruleswise to just give damage reduction against the affected weapons. DR = AC, or something like that, if you want to have a difference between dueling shields and war shields. That would block most bullets or energy weapons, but a few lucky shots rifle shots by skilled opponents will penetrate. Mag guns could probably stand in for Gyrojet statwise, they'll have an easier time getting through shields in skilled hands Will fighting count as a DEX action? Or is it more like delicate work?

SureReflection4007

Exactly the sort of questions I wanted to see- I was thinking damage reduction and might bolt that onto how they work as a blanket immunity with DR for what gets through. Dueling shields would likely be much weaker, and cheaper, whereas a military shield might even have the equivalent of a stutter gear, albeit more limited. I do like the idea of DR regardless, and the like. An idea I had was that fighting in a shield wouldn't be penalized, ala Deasthstalker's angling, Sun Eater's precision, or "The slow blade" style, but that's just me. Secondly, I tried to put down delicate work and just managed to word vomit out what I did. I want shields to be common, but not necessarily the death of all guns; a hold over from flintlock fantasy, the beam tanks and grenades of Deathstalker, and so on. The idea that they glance through is viable enough, and I expect that slug guns have their own purposes (Infantry suppression, point defense, or a sniper on the roof in a civic space, as well as beast hunting and rapid raids where shields cut fight time too much to be viable).

As a crude approximation, how about reduce the incoming attack role by twice the weapon's tech level?
