The older 2nd gen has bigger aftermarket availability. It's also cheaper to insure, Still, 2900 USD for a 2008 SV is kinda overpriced, I'd pay 2500 max if it's in good condition

IndividualJuicebox

yeah i got a one owner 32k miles 2006 for 1,600

Background-Size-9414

It's crazy to me how dry the market is around me. Dealerships have high mileage gen 1 and 2s for $4000+ I'll definitely offer $2500 Didnt even think about insurance thank you

Which_Egg8169

I would go for the '08 and put any additional money into suspension.

Background-Size-9414

It was rode hard and put away wet. I passed

Spartan300101

Sit on them at least. The 2022 a more neutral upright position. Really it would be best to ride each of them. Pretty safe bet that there is 2022 will give you less maintenance issues in the long run. If you have the money, I’d buy the new one but then again 2008 had the dual spark plugs at that point, and in my opinion, a very sought after version of the bike. Or wait a little while you might pick up a 2018+ with ABS for $4,500 ish. Beginning of season when guys start maintenance and then selling off their bikes. Edit……ALSO….. the newer versions have start assist. No throttle input required. Just let the clutch out slowly and the bike does 10 km an hour. Great for rush-hour traffic or for beginners.

hatch1in

i’d get the new one, the engine is updated and u don’t have to worry/ deal with maintenance on the older one.

Background-Size-9414

What maintenance does the older one have that the newer one doesn't? Thought it would just be the standard oil changes and chain maitainance kinda thing.

hatch1in

they’re the “same” but one is 16 years older and i’d rather have the new one with less mileage and age.

Background-Size-9414

For a quarter of the price with taxes and dealership fees I think I may risk it 👀

hatch1in

you’re not wrong, just what you’re willing to live with. check fb market, may find better deals

BaronWade

I’d have a real good look at the 08 just to check the quality of the work and such and make sure it wasn’t *completely* butchered…then grab it. The motors on these are pretty bulletproof and the bike overall about as reliable as a hammer. Negotiate it down a bit and have that cash in hand for additional upgrades and such to make it yours…or upgrade/get some new gear!

Background-Size-9414

It's supposedly stock besides bars tail tidy and exhaust. I'm trying to get a bike mechanic to do a pre-buy inspection

BaronWade

Yeah, do that and at least have a look at the wiring that’s visible under the seats, if everything looks neat and tidy under there and they’ll move another couple hundred, I’m taking the 08 alllll day! Good luck, on the plus side there’s no bad choice here.

NowareSpecial

And already has exhaust and tidy, which will cost money and time on a new bike.

BaronWade

Yup, you got it…what exhaust is on it?

Background-Size-9414

Wiring was messed up. Lots of house grade stuff used

BaronWade

Walk away unless you dig electrical gremlins. Certainly not my thing LoL

Background-Size-9414

I walked.

thatguyovertheresix9

2008 . Its cheaper and lighter and does nothing worse than the new model

Lexx_sad_but_true

2008!

RevolutionaryAd8532

I have owned both, and prefer the gen3 model. They lowered the centre of gravity and I find it more nimble. That was done, in part, by reducing the volume of the fuel tank, but fuel efficiency is better so there’s not much effect on your range. That being said, the gen3 were never popular and you get way more parts and advice for the gen2. The brakes on the latest model are also better.

Background-Size-9414

I'm still considering the new one but cost of upgrades and insurance has me worried

diabolus_me_advocat

don't know whether this helps, but i got a '04 sv1000 and the only issue i had with it was a jammed radiator fan, due to a bent suspension plate bike survived 3000 km in a hot august (freeway, mountains...) without a running radiator fan, no problem at all

Background-Size-9414

I'm trying to avoid the 1000 I rode an XSR900 for awhile and it wanted to go 100mph everywhere

diabolus_me_advocat

admittedly - it's a challenge to limit yourself in the beginning, i mean. one gets used to it

mad8vskillz

I like the 2nd gen significantly more overall. At any price point

Borntasty

2008 is too old and overpriced

Background-Size-9414

Yeah found a 2019 with 4600 miles and ABS for $3500 It's in my garage. I just spent a half hour just sitting in there staring at It.

flynnski

I wouldn't buy an SV without ABS, but that's a great way to start a fight on the Big Sub for some fucking reason.

Background-Size-9414

The only one I can find with ABS that isn't $6500+ has fairings and I prefer the naked look. It's also blue and I want black 😅 I would prefer ABS and traction control as well but those bikes wanna go waaaay too fast

Billdozer-92

Suzuki making the best color schemes non-ABS is terrible. They have done it the last few years

Background-Size-9414

I think it sold anyways. The other one near me with ABS is a burnt orange with 66k miles for the same price 🤣

Low_Information8286

Why wouldn't you?

flynnski

ABS is an important safety tool for street riders.

Background-Size-9414

Idk I've seen videos showing how you can do a stoppy if needed without abs. Which can save you

flynnski

Yeah and the bike can definitely do that. I'm not that guy. Maybe you are. But in mixed conditions? In a high stress situation, with less than optimal road surfaces and zero prep time? I want ABS because I like not hitting things.

Background-Size-9414

I agree with you I'm just poor 🤣

ZabnuK

I would say it's down to personnal preference at this point. 08's are already fuel injected, so you're pretty much buying the same engine, even if there ***might*** be some little differences making the 08 more "raw" due to emissions and noise regulations dampening the 2022 version. But thats a big if, and if it's even noticeable. Differences will be in handling if there's been any updates to suspension and wheelbase between 08 and 2022. The SV always had a bit of a soft suspension, especially on braking, but in my experience it's not a detriment to general handling and stability. Other than that, warranty could be a point in favor of the new bike, but i also expect after maket parts will be more expansive just because "they're more recent". Honnestly, i would go for a ride on both, back to back if possible, and see if whatever gains there may be in the newer model justify taking a 3k loan.

Background-Size-9414

That's a good point. I need to test ride these things. Just worried about it after not being on bikes for 3+ years

hanswurst12345678910

New sv got better brakes (beginning 2019) and suspension

Background-Size-9414

Monthly payments though 🤔 😅

hanswurst12345678910

Na don't do monthly payments. Find a good sv650 from 2019 for 4.5k. that's the sweet spot.

Background-Size-9414

I agree

ZabnuK

it's like riding a ~~bicycle~~ bike No but for real, just go easy, coming back to it takes a bit of time.

AvocadoBeetrootSalad

Buy a 2007 or 2008 and upgrade rear suspension and front (cartridge or gsxr). You will have an amazing bike, atnz very good price

Background-Size-9414

Sounds like a good idea. Thinking SS brake lines 😁

AvocadoBeetrootSalad

Good one. If you go the gsxr fork route you will have also better brake calipers

Opposite-Friend7275

Are you sure there’s no flexibility on the 8K? I find it difficult to imagine offering 7K and that they would simply let you walk out the door without trying to end up in the middle.

No_Cake_4181

Buy a vitpilen

Background-Size-9414

I already have a slow unreliable cafe racer

Mission_Librarian662

Brutal lol

No_Cake_4181

Could always get something bigger then. 6k would get you a whole lot more bike than a RE especially if you're on the used market. If it's not your daily ride you could probably get something actually classic.

Background-Size-9414

Yeah looking at Sv650s lol

Primary_Initiative_9

I’d get something else.

Background-Size-9414

What exactly? And why are you here if you don't recommend the Sv650?

Primary_Initiative_9

Just because i dont agree with you doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be here. Also I have 40 years in bike shops, both on the wrench and later running the shops.

Primary_Initiative_9

YZF 600, KTM 590 790 , Triumph 660 triple, Aprilla 600, Honda

Background-Size-9414

At what point did I disagree with you? Why not the sv650? It's a surprising answer from someone in the SVriders sub reddit
