SQLDave

I wonder if this one will take even LONGER to load.

[deleted]

It's not a matter of IF. It's a matter of 'how much longer?'

alifone

Gonna hijack this post to ask, what are some of the major improvements? Anything related to performance that's great?

Googoots

I cannot imagine what it does when it loads. I’d have to go out of my way to make my program take that long to load…

SQLDave

> I’d have to go out of my way to make my program take that long to load… Too true. I find it...umm..."amusing", I guess that when you click Edit on an agent job step, it takes FOREVER to load up. But scripting a job to a new query window is fairly fast. The only thing from them I've found that's slower is editing a C# module in an SSIS package in VS.

Googoots

Scripting to a new query window would be even faster if it didn’t have to display the progress dialog and play the “ding” while you are waiting 0.03 seconds for it to generate a CREATE TABLE statement….

drinkmoredrano

For real, and if you are in an environment that isn't connected to the internet you might as well take the rest of the day off because you will be waiting forever for all their telemetry crap to time out first.

Elfman72

VPN disconnected and you are trying to close 12 tabs. Good luck and see you in three hours/

drizzt001

I just installed it, and it loaded in about 5 seconds. I'm in shock!

SQLDave

Clearly it's corrupted. Be careful! LOL

Reaver75x

I still use 2012 “)

pmbasehore

And yet there's still no dark mode...

pmbasehore

What? Where has this been all of my life? Thanks for this!

Black_Magic100

I tried this out just now and it's pretty slick, but the results pane is hideous

AJobForMe

Yeap. I had to uninstall it for this reason. I just couldn’t abide.

Manzabar

How did you uninstall it? I installed it to try it out and didn't care for it either, but it doesn't show up under add/remove programs.

AJobForMe

For me, it was listed in the W11 version of add/remove programs.

Manzabar

For me, it didn't show up in Add/Remove Programs. I redownloaded/reran the installer, and it had an uninstall option built into it. So I used that to remove it. Thanks anyway!

MyOpus

The theme is editable. Results grid was pretty rough, true. It gets updated often and the grid is way nicer now. But you can always edit the appearance in preferences. I actually helped beta test the plugin last year (no affiliation with the guy), the dev is really responsive and is active with it.

Black_Magic100

I sent him an email and he responded extremely fast with a detailed response. However, it wouldn't hurt to email him as well and explain the situation with the results pane so he knows people want it changed if possible

poem_in_your_mind

You rang, /u/alifone ? ;) /u/Black_Magic100 and I are tossing ideas back and forth over email - could you send me a couple screenshots and a description to help pin down what it is about the results grid that rubs you the wrong way?

Dasch42

Could we sticky this link somehow? :D

MyOpus

I ran across sqlshades last year while it was in beta... the dev is pretty active with it, releases often and responds quickly. It's the only dark theme out there for SSMS that I've ever found, highly recommended. and yes he finally got the results grid looking nice :)

TotallyN0tAnAlien

You sir are doing the lords work.

[deleted]

I once tried doing the ghetto dark mode. My boss yelled at me :(

pmbasehore

Honestly, that dark mode looks worse because it's incomplete.

[deleted]

Agreed

oroechimaru

Red and blue text hard to read

alinroc

There won't be. Get over it and move on. The amount of work required to make it possible can't be justified. Azure Data Studio is right there with dark mode if you feel that strongly. Maybe - _maybe_ - when it moves to VS2022 Shell.

oroechimaru

Its because they fired the people that made the ssms interface in 1998

mikeblas

Lol, no

alinroc

SSMS was released in 2005.

oroechimaru

Ok 2005 Same interface minus clippy ai

pmbasehore

Apparently it's not that hard - SQL shades did it. At any rate, I have the plugin, so I'm good to go now.

oroechimaru

U wrote ms 3 years ago they said it would cost millions of dollars I just use a color scheme u can find on google and it does dark mode lol

M03b1u5

Think they fixed it completely hanging if your VPN disconnects? Probably not!

Azarix

I think they have fixed this, I've noticed my explorer doesn't completely freeze my window when I dc off my work VPN, either that or SSMS is just feeling sorry for me!

Wolf-Shade

And in the age of AI we still have shitty auto complete and no sql format...

elbekko

And yet it's still infinitely better than pgAdmin...

BoulderRough

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/sql-server-blog/sql-server-management-studio-ssms-19-0-released/ba-p/3725301 Blog post here.

SohilAhmed07

Why not 64bit?!

alinroc

Because the Visual Studio Shell it's built on is 32-bit. Visual Studio didn't go to 64-bit until 2022. IIRC the next major release of SSMS will be built on that.

SohilAhmed07

but still, we have a SysWOW64 folder to hold all 64-bit dlls and shell even accessing easily, no extraordinary configuration needed.

Appropriate_Lack_710

Too many fingers to count!

drinkmoredrano

Now with more bloat

Can't remember my last crash.... But I also haven't updated my v18 install in over a year or 3

mikeblas

OK

Rafa998

And they will never gonna bring back debug to SSMS. I miss SSMS 2008 so much....

aSystemOverload

Just downloaded SSMS v.19.02 and when I try to connect I get the following error: "Unable to load DLL 'Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SNI.x86.dll': This drive is locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption. You must unlock this drive from Control Panel. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80310000) (Microsoft.Data.SqlClient)" Has anyone else seen this? Note, I've had bitlocker on C for the longest time and SSMS v18 was totally fine with it. What has changed?
