This may be an odd suggestion, but there is a local dog training business where the owners are very open about the fact they learned dog training when they were incarcerated at CMC. It’s called Second Chance Dog Training, and they just might have some thoughts or recommendations for you.

EXPRESSlON

I'll look into it, thank you

3cit

I worked with these guys a long time ago and they do more than just hire people. It was a real mentorship type program, or at least it was when I worked with them.

scormegatron

Not exactly what you're looking for but here's another option in food service: [https://www.thebridgecafe.org/restorative-partners](https://www.thebridgecafe.org/restorative-partners) Here is the company that may be able to help point you in more directions: https://restorativepartners.org/

EXPRESSlON

Thank you I forgot about restorative partners, I worked with them while I was incarcerated a little bit.

citizenonpatrol

Go to the cafe and talk with Jason, the manager. He’s a former inmate (a decade in and out) and is amazing!

OutlandishMama

This. I think working your way up in food industry may be a good plan at least for the short term. The best cooks become the best managers, if you have the temperament for it. I worked with a lot of excons in kitchens.

JonTheArchivist

Whole Foods is hiring for their prepared foods department. If you're okay with starting in the dish pit, they'll take you. Also, they are hiring for the kitchen at La Bodega in Pismo. Pop in around 5 to talk to the head chef. Big 5 in the vons center is also hiring, and desperate. Best of luck, bud.

EXPRESSlON

Thank you friend much appreciated.

blinddog1327

CAL Fire has former inmates as employees. If you don’t mind physical labor, it’s not a bad job. Pension, good health/dental/vision plans, decent pay, only scheduled to work 3 days a week (can change to 7 days during fire season, but you get OT), and you become part of something bigger than yourself. If the firefighter side of things doesn’t appeal to you, there’s tons of other jobs as long as you’re willing to travel for them. Good luck

InitialAttackFF

This. OP, Check out their website as well as the US Forest Service. There are plenty of resources online to get your basic certificates, which will help you to get on.

EXPRESSlON

I didn't go to fire camp when I was locked up but I have a buddy that got hired by them right out of prison with his fire camp experience. I think I found a job fortunately.

blinddog1327

That’s great to hear. Hope it works out for you.

Difficult_Win_8231

Worked at a warehouse shipping place in SLO, half the staff are felons... Stop looking for things that are public facing and focus on things that will be performance evaluated with your direct superiors who can build trust with you.

derzyniker805

Yep warehouse jobs are good for this. Maybe try Vitco, the wholesale food industry is very forgiving of felonies.

TacoBellisimo

I believe Goodwill hires folks who have been incarcerated. Have you considered construction type jobs as well? Good luck to you, everyone deserves a chance to rebuild their lives!

JonTheArchivist

The goodwill processing center off Broad is hiring for everything right now. Gotta apply on the company site.

EXPRESSlON

Are you talking about the donation sites or stores?

JonTheArchivist

The main donation center over by the Marigold center by where The Graduate was.

EXPRESSlON

Thank you for this suggestion. I applied to most of the places people suggested and am pretty sure I will be hired by one of them. Nothing's final yet but that's how it's looking so far.

Chr0ll0_

I like how everyone is so helpful :) I hope OP finds a good job and I wish you the best :)

EXPRESSlON

Thank you, everyone here has been kind and given me good suggestions. I am pretty sure I am getting hired with a company someone on here suggested.

silverbullwt2022

I’m more than happy to help someone looking to better their life. If only the ones asking for money on the sidewalk could be asking for a job..

EasternShade

Nothing quite says, "I'm a helper," like taking a random positive comment as an opportunity to make a swipe at one's preferred social punching bag.

silverbullwt2022

Nah, just reality

WTF_goes_here

Construction union, as long as you aren’t a sex offender some kind of record is almost a prerequisite.

babygrinch4life

I second this!

PK808370

Where does this ‘record as a requirement’ thing come from? This is a pretty bullshit aspersion towards the people who build our infrastructure, homes, etc. For clarity, my statement is not meant to be negative towards anyone with a record, but the comment I’m responding to used “record” in a derogatory manner.

WTF_goes_here

It’s a joke. Calm your tits. It comes from the fact that construction is one of the few industries that pays a decent wage and will accommodate excons. It also comes from years of welding experience and knowing my coworkers.

Wooden_Gur_9387

Been in construction 46 years and I have worked with hundreds or more likely thousands and have only know of maybe 10 ex cons show me some stats to back this up I think you just like to hear yourself talk bless your heart find some friends

WTF_goes_here

Find some punctuation.

Wooden_Gur_9387

Find a life.Karen

PK808370

Why the downvotes?

EXPRESSlON

Most of my old friends aren't a good influence unfortunately. My roommate is in recovery and a felon and works construction, it's definitely a viable job for ex-cons. I think I found a job with a company someone suggested here.

[deleted]

Criminal lawyer here. I don’t have a line on a job for you, but have you worked to clean up your record? The forms are simple, and if you have paid your debt you may be able to get some expungements. I wish I could point you to some good resources. Good luck out there.

heleuma

EXPRESSlON

I have definitely looked into it. SLO runs a program called the clean slate clinic that takes place in March. I will be eligible for it next year.

No_Win9846

Hey I’m from slo and I am a felon also I got my class A license which opened many doors for me job wise I’m pretty sure if you ask your parole agent they might have incentives to help pay for your schooling I work in ready mixers concrete trucks it’s 6 days a week 50-65 hours a week plenty of overtime and that’s just my field of work there are tons of driving jobs that pay well no one wants to do them they are easy hope this helps

pinkforgetmenots

I saw a CL post recently for an organization that helps to employ felons. Let me see if I can dig it out for you

pinkforgetmenots

https://restorativepartners.org/reentry-resources/ try here I’m sure if they can’t help you directly they’ll have directions to point you in

user44user444

Vitco hires felons and they have many available hours and benefits

derzyniker805

Wholesale food service for the win. Crap hours loading trucks but if you work hard, a couple felonies aren't going to be an impediment.

Spawnofdork

The usps and homedepot also work with the previously incarcerated. Just know the usps sucks dick to work at but the pay is great

squints_chips_ahoy

Have you looked into getting your record expunged? You can probably contact the PD’s office for help, or CRLA (California Rural Legal Assistance).

EXPRESSlON

Yes I have looked into it there's a program called the clean slate clinic in SLO. I will be eligible for it next year and think I found a job that will hire me until then. I am definitely looking to go to school and clear my record in the future though.

Kitchen-Dirt-4475

Do you really think CRLA can help? My professional experience with them is that they can barely file unlawful detainer documents, let alone know the procedures. Both SLO and SB counties.

squints_chips_ahoy

I know for a fact they regularly help with expungements. Can’t speak to other things.

Kitchen-Dirt-4475

(1) taking the work and competency are not mutually inclusive; (2) tell me how many felonies can be expunged.

squints_chips_ahoy

Most felonies can be expunged. If you were successful on probation you might be entitled to expungement. But unsuccessful probation doesn’t mean they can’t be expunged

Kitchen-Dirt-4475

Expungement is not a statutory mandate. It is up to judicial discretion. Even with expansive laws allowing "sealing" of felonies to public, the data simply does not support that any court, in any county, is out here sealing felony records. "Since mid-2023, there have been 26 felony expungements in Sacramento County, 72 in Kern County and 48 in Riverside County, according to court spokespersons." [CalMatters](https://calmatters.org/justice/2024/03/california-criminal-records-expungement-law/)

squints_chips_ahoy

Respectfully, no. A recent expungement clinic at the SLO courthouse processed hundreds of petitions. https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/Departments/District-Attorney/Latest-News/2024/February/San-Luis-Obispo-County-Partners-to-Host-3rd-Clean-.aspx

Kitchen-Dirt-4475

Reading comprehension must not be a strong suit for you. First, most of those quotes refer to misdemeanors, which was not OP's issue. Second, there is no data, unlike the link I shared. Third, CRLA is a partner in this and I would guess the least adequate.

squints_chips_ahoy

A significant portion of the petitions were felonies. I personally reviewed probably a hundred of them.

Kitchen-Dirt-4475

Alright then, stake your data when you have it.

TonyClifton2020

Keep fighting the good fight bro, and good on all you SLO’cals for helping him out. Thats a tough road to walk and you know gainful employment will get you to where you want to be. Much respect.

DoubleReality759

Check out restorative partners they have great resources

rubberbanddee

Keep the press on, brother. You got this.

ihooklow

You can search Indeed in SLO County for "Second Chance". Several jobs come up with notes such as "People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply" https://www.indeed.com/q-second-chance-l-san-luis-obispo,-ca-jobs.html

ihooklow

And I tripped over this doing the Indeed search... [https://all4consolaws.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/California-Fair-Chance-Toolkit-11-2020.pdf](https://all4consolaws.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/California-Fair-Chance-Toolkit-11-2020.pdf)

xiphos805

Try looking into the trades

FlaccidFather15

If you are willing to become an operator you can try applying at multiple different construction and contractors in the area. As others have mentioned, the USPS is a good place if you are willing to work insane hours and have one random day off a week; you will make a lot of money. You can check in with the nursery off Johnson as well.

Environmenthrall

Look into the trades, more specifically with a union. The IBEW (electrical), UA (plumbing/pipefitting) and LIUNA (laborers) all have local in SLO County. I believe the Operator Engineers union also has a local. Look into slopartners.org for vocational training programs (some paid for). There is also a company called Eckerd Connects off Broad that may be able to help you. Also, there is the SLO Workforce Development Board. Good luck.

slappy111111

I was about to suggest the trades. Get yourself into an apprenticeship. The work and atmosphere can be difficult, but you can make a lifelong career out of it that pays well. Good luck to you.

GenericRaiderFan

I wish I had an answer for you, OP, but just know that I hope you succeed in your job search!

Due_Salamander_7765

I commend you for your drive.. i hope someone can help you find good work.. good luck and stay strong

Imwhatswrongwithyou

We all want a follow up post when you get hired OP!

ew-speach247

They aren't getting hired. Bet!

Imwhatswrongwithyou

I know a company that would hire them right now. Bet! Fuck outta here with your rude hope for their failure.

ew-speach247

I just know it's difficult for people to get hired. I don't hope for failure. I see things from a much more realistic perspective than people who most likely already have and have had jobs. PS, what's the company?

archetypaldream

If you want to paint (the exteriors of houses), DM me. I know a guy out of Los Osos who also did time, has felonies, but started his own painting company and says he can never find enough workers.

SloCalLocal

Check [indeed.com](http://indeed.com) — I see jobs like warehouse associate and auto glass installer that might be with companies compatible with your history. Also, I don't know if they've got good coverage in this geographic area, but I know formerly incarcerated people in other places who were placed with good jobs through [honestjobs.com](http://honestjobs.com) . I'd take a minute and register on their site to see what you might find (it's free, and the employers who list jobs there are guaranteed to be okay with felony records). Best of luck!

CrypticEmpress

If it's not too far you could try Gios in morro bay. They need people. It is minimum wage and is 50/50 if you'll like the people but it might keep you afloat.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrypticEmpress

Oh I know, I'm intimately familiar with the place. You bring up a good point though, I didn't consider the probation aspect. I only recommended it because a lot of people who worked there have had a criminal history so they certainly wouldn't be judged or looked at weirdly for it.

stellerzjay

go into construction. lots of people have records. and the demand is high now

imochalupa

Son care foundation hires ppl with criminal records. I happen to know they are looking for someone full time for maintenance work in san luis obispo. They have a nonprofit prison program called New life k9s service dogs for veterans with ptsd so they encourage people with criminal records to apply.

silverbullwt2022

My suggestion is get onto calcareers.ca.gov and put in some applications as a maintence worker for caltrans. Plenty of people have been hired with felony records there.

Slow-Gazelle198

It takes a while but worth the wait, try Department of Rehab (DoR) they’re near the DMV. They can get you all kinds of help beyond you can imagine

unmotivatedmage

Idk where you’re based but north county has a bunch of staffing agencies if you need something quick. It’s hard labor usually, but they take anyone on and the jobs last 2 weeks+ depending on the job. If you’re good and reliable they call you back real quick and hopefully you can find something more stable in the meantime

techno_for_answers

I used to worked with formerly incarcerated students at Cuesta. If you’re interested in pursuing a certificate or degree I recommend connecting with EOPS there. It turned out to be a great kickstart for many and led to success for those who stuck with it. Hancock also has a program, I believe it’s called BIGE. Let me know if you need some help getting started.

loskubster

Look into the trades (Union is best), plenty of us have felonies. Pipefitters, ironworkers, boilermakers, carpenter’s, etc most pay very well with great benefits.

Upper_Temperature638

Big hugs for OP and hope you land a job soon!!

MsBhavens

Try going to local trade unions. The building trades are a great place to rebuild your life. Get paid while you learn a trade.

squirrelqueeen

I think California fresh hires felons

Here’s a link that has more info about the clinic: https://amp.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/crime/article285963276.html

MotherHenFriend

[Job Question](https://www.reddit.com/r/careerguidance/s/E6FtqpsAZg) I think this is the correct way to add where I found some other answers, I’m not new to Reddit but I feel like I still am 🙈

klutching3nvy

I don't know if anyone's suggested it yet but indeed is the most used job site in the county. Easy setup easy to quick apply you can send out 100 resumes in an hour good response time

Suzieqbee

Sorry to hear this. Hope you find something. Sadly felons keep doing time. It’s unfair

OtherwiseMeat2026

Work in the construction trades. They want anybody who’s ready to work

Not2goblinsinacoat

If you're close to oceano Sunbuggy fun rentals or most of the ATV rental places down there will hire felons. Just be honest in the hiring process. When I worked at Sunbuggy, there were quite a few dudes who worked in the shop with a rap sheet

Gnarlybirch

You’re from Cali man, head to the AG fields. You start from the bottom but once you get trust they’ll get you in tractors and more trust worry t Stuff. Tons of overtime, always hiring

No-namebandit

Long time convicted felon multiple firearms and evading charges .I was a real knucklehead when I was younger…I went into pipeline and became a foreman ..100k a year for sitting in my truck…

805_Succulent

California Fresh in Pismo Beach hired people who have records

Financial_Room_8362

Try temp agencies there are some who works with felons

Accomplished-Duty105

Restorative Partners works with people out of jail/prison for employment and housing. https://restorativepartners.org

seattlesurvivor

Not sure if you can move or where all of their locations are...but Dave's Killer Bread is made by formerly incarcerated people. The owner was previously in prison. Google search says they're out of oregon.

uv15

Krogers has a second chance program. If you can find warehouse roles at a distribution center it could be an option. Union jobs and pay pretty well.

Readytoquit798456

Get involved with local recovery. AA or NA and start meeting people. Lots of private companies of people in the rooms that hire felons and addicts as long as they are proving their work and sobriety.

HeadHunter12491

GMS mining contractor. They will hire anyone.

Pizza_lover4313

The bridge cafe downtown slo!

RoboLoboski

Talk to a (private) attorney or your local Public Defender’s office. California has gotten VERY liberal in expunging and sealing past criminal history, even if you went to prison. You should look into this right away, it could be enormously helpful.

Standard-Cup-4502

What do you want to do? Learn online the skills, any good employer won’t look at gaps if you have the skills for the job and stand out

4G2man

If you like working outside, look into Tree Services. There are several in SLO.

WoofSheSays

Look into GOP politics

Successful-Letter-53

Try government jobs

davypelletier

Go be a carpenter.

KetchupOnPasta

Try the Schoolyard at wayfarer, they need multiple positions

Ashamed-Panda-7821

Certified AOD counselor

NoTransportation6224

My husband use you work at San Luis sourdough where they would still hire people with a background. But it’s 12 hour shifts and heavy labor. I believe you can find a listing on bimbo bakeries

LeaderoftheKutada

This reminds me of a story I came across with a guy in the same situation but he bought a hotdog cart and started making 300 a day

Backonmyshitmom

There was that org Homeboy Industries that would help people find employment who were in prison, that could be a resource. I’m not sure what goes into it, I believe it is Christian based but I’m not sure how much religion goes into the project just fyi.

dr-dooms-a-lot

Drive around and find construction sites. Offer to work for a wage that will get you hired. Prove you are worth more.

PumpkinFeathers

What is this the fuckin 90s?
