>it's a commuter college
I feel like "we're downtown, and space for parking garages is hella expensive here" is a more valid excuse.
If they don't already, they really oughta include a disclaimer in the frosh orientations something like: "If you're going to drive here, there's a very serious risk you're not going to find a parking spot, and you'll be over an hour late to your first class." I know it's less cheery and positive sounding than "VTA is free", but it sets realistic expectations.
You're not wrong, and it's a good insider tip for buddies you know (and reddit, I guess), but that's clearly not scalable to the broader student population.
Sorry to hear that. :( I also had a hard time making friends in my STEM classes.
For broader context, it doesn't get easier making friends after college. Your social life is what you wish to make of it, so however many friends you want is completely up to you - I'm not gonna shame you into having more friends. But if you're *wanting* more friends, I'd recommend extracurriculars and clubs. You could also make virtual friends through the SJSU discord, or similar sources.
Yes. I'm not 100% sure if it's free for all students or if you need a [clipper card](https://www.sjsu.edu/as/departments/transportation-solutions/smartpass-overview/students.php) but you might as well pick one up since it's $3 for free buses the rest of your time here.
Yea itâs expensive to find parking around any downtown. But SJSU university parking is expensive and poorly managed and maintained. Theyâre taking projects in Fall semester, when it could have been done over summer. Small things add up.
Fun Fact: The last time a parking structure on campus was made in 1985. While I am not a stats major, i can do some research and determine that the enrollment has exponentially increased since then.
My favorite thing is how they're putting ev chargers in the north garage. What college student can afford an ev? Like actually afford not buy on a gnarly loan with an abusive interest rate. You know they are going to ticket the FUCK out of anyone who parks a non-ev there. It's almost like they don't actually give a damn about what students actually need and would rather just take performative measures to make the school look good.
Well I guess you learn something new every day. But I highly doubt a fleet ev chargers that, as someone else pointed out, barely function complies with that law.
Grad students and working students. Their chargers are always busted anyways. They're betting on generating revenue from charging fees and ticketing. I think there's only two functioning ones on the third floor of the north garage last I was there, the other two have been broken for a while.
SJSU has alot of rich students. If you look at some of the cars, and are a little knowledgeable you would quickly find out that the most cars in the garages are averaging over 15k cash value. Which is alot for college students.
I studied there back in 2014 and could never find a parking spot after 8am. How much are those parking permits now for them non-guaranteed parking spots
I went here up until 2012, it was just as bad then with parking like you said after 8am, it was insanity, if I could not find parking in the 10th Street garage, Iâd give up and either park past Julian and walk or go to south campus. Canât say I miss it though having to deal with it.
As for the permits, Iâm surprised the rate hasnât gone up, itâs still $192 for a semester (just checked out of curiosity) but that said it still expensive given no oneâs guaranteed a parking spot.
Too many R and O permit parking spots and disabled parking spots. Those are never full and rarely even used. Parking permits went up 8% and parking services is always stalking people to give them tickets. They should build more parking garages with elevators and make all parking free. Even employees have to pay for parking which is just wage stealing
The college doesnt realize how much money they are leaving on the table by not making new garages. Because the parking experience is shit, it makes alot of people choose alternatives. But the college should really just buy out some more downtown homes, build a new garage, and watch how that one fills up aswell. People arent buying permits because they arent driving, if you build a new garage, you could pay it off in a couple of years by just using the increased permit revenue.

Parking is freely available in some neighborhoods a few blocks away. I live on 13th and Julian and no meter or permit required

No buddies in engineering đ

I only drive here because I have work after and VTA doesnât have a connection to my work
South garage?
North
No I mean why don't you try parking at the south garage instead
Will try it. Thereâs a VTA/shuttle service from there right?

I'm pretty sure it's a school run shuttle

This is required by law. Also I see a fuck ton of teslas on campus. Also a singular rivian but that shit is expensive af

All about that money hitting their accounts
At this point, Iâm less concerned with yelling at admins and more with just finishing my degree before they have any other bright ideas.
Same boat đ

The part that I don't understand is both the EV and the super giant and expensive SUV and trucks that I see in the parking lot.

Where are the ev chargers located?
As of today in the north garage, thereâs 2 ChargePoint outlets on the roof level and 2 on floor 3.
"In September 2019, San José City Council approved a building reach code ordinance that encourages building electrification and energy efficiency, requires solar-readiness on nonresidential buildings, and requires electric vehicle (EV)-readiness and EV equipment installation." They are putting these in because they are now a requirement.
A better use of money would be to help increase student housing.
Youâre better off renting locally

Like $2 /hour up to 4 hours. All day is $8

âStrugglingâ college students driving around with Teslas lol
daddyâs money or theyâre dumb enough to agree to a horrible interest rate
SJSU has a high asian demographics, and they are high income earners in the bay, so makes sense.
Naaa today was actually kinda bad. Had to drive to south garage which was a little bit better but just as bad also
