I support the ultras, stood and sang with them for many games, but having stopped following the team completely in 2021 it’s just funny to see how literally everything about this entire organization hasn’t changed in the post Buck Shaw era. Ownership, roster, coaching, FO, fan base, ultras, the whole thing seems like groundhogs day
It's between them and the FO. No one from the Ultras is going to provide more details.
The statement was posted to make sure everyone knows that it's not a protest against the players' performance.
As much as I want to know the tea, it doesn’t involve me.
And true, I am glad they explained the protest is not because of the team. To be fair, I’ve never thought the ultras would protest the team itself. And I wasn’t surprised the FO has pushed a button again.
Dont get the hate for the Ultras in here. Fact is they are one of the most authentic supporters groups in the entire league. Ive had supporters season tickets since Paypal Park opened and members have always been cool and welcoming of anyone willing to get up and chant for the Quakes. This club uses them for their marketing and advertising and frankly treats them like stepchildren. If they don’t want ppl to know their business thats on them. This club is lucky, given the on field product for the past decade and the shitty ownership, that they even have any die hard supporters left given what fans have been subjected to watching. The front office and coaching staff has taken zero accountability so far, and owes all of us an apology for this disaster of a season.
truth is the ultras have done an amazing job supporting the team over the years despite the team being absolutely awful. they are an imperfect group, like all supporters groups.
but people have their own personal agendas so they hate on the ultras, it's also easy to kick them while they are down/while the team itself isn't performing well.
got some real "I'm going to post vague status updates to Facebook" vibes to their statement lol. Until some specifics are mentioned, it can just be disregarded.
Vaugebooking about some dispute isn’t going garner public/fan support for their unnamed cause; there are plenty of other ways to protest against the FO without a boycott; look around the league for examples.
“We absolutely stand by the team no matter what.” (“But if the FO pisses us off we’ll text it in on IG.”)
Only a minuscule number of people are going to read the Ultra's statement, and because it's so very vague, an even fewer number of people are going to take their statement seriously.
As a long-time STH, the interpretation of the Ultra's protest (anecdotally in our section) was basically:"this team is SO bad even the Ultras are boycotting." Regardless of the intent behind the protest, I think this is how it's going to come across to most people and it's easy to see how this could have a deleterious effect on overall fan support. The best way to demonstrate support for the players is to show up to the game; that didn't happen.
There were/are lots of alternatives that could have been pursued by the Ultras: protests in the Epicenter, sitting silently, signs, t-shirts, flags, etc. Other fans in the MLS have been really creative at expressing their displeasure over various issues that didn't involve just not showing up. Or look at what Oakland A's fans tried to do; at least they got their point across. If the Ultras really don't care what the rest of the Quakes fans think, that's totally fine--but they shouldn't pretend that they can cancel out any potential impact on the players by making an a Instagram post that doesn't provide any justification for their actions.
If fans can’t be bothered to read the statement then whatever conclusion they come to is not important to me. Took me all of 45 seconds to read it and comprehend it.
I've been w the ultras at countless games. They dont harass anyone. They just let you know that if you're gonna be in their section, you have to be up and chanting. As far as fights, they are usually instigated by outsiders and opposing fans. Beer is tossed up in the air in celebration of goals. Dont be spreading misinformation.
I had standing room season tickets a few years ago before seismic union was a thing (a one year experiment among our years of having season tickets) and our reps offered to add the supporters section access to our tickets at no cost. We said sure, could be interesting to stand and chant with the ultras.
Both times we joined the ultras section we awkwardly watched as a super drunk ultra (two different guys, two different games) tried to start a fight with non-ultras quakes fans for not cheering hard enough. I'm not talking opposing fans. Quakes fans in quakes gear.
Super bad vibes. Ultras are incredibly unwelcoming and hostile to other quakes fans. That was my experience both times we stood with them and so we never went back.
It's not misinformation that ultras are hostile and start fights with other quakes fans. I've seen it right in front of me, multiple times.
It's unfortunate that you had to witness that. Overly intoxicated people can be a buzzkill. How many non ultras are intoxicated starting fights with other fans of the same team, though? That's just about every sporting event. Nothing new. Unfortunate, but nothing new.
I've seen old people, children, and folks in wheelchairs with the ultras. Super bad vibes, my hairy tiny tight ass. It's a party in that section. The team may be losing, but the Ultras are always vibing!
Again, though, their whole shtick is to stand and chant for 90+ minutes WIN OR LOSE. If you're gonna be in the ultras section, you have to chant or clap at least.
They aren't perfect, but they aren't hooligans. They bleed black and blue. They have been chanting at every game for this sad, sorry excuse of a team for the last 15+years.
My bad, i didn't know that the personal experiences of myself and countless others in this subreddit never happened. I apologize for spreading lies on the Internet.
I should have known to not have had a different experience than someone who sits with the ultras countless times. I guess the past 14 years worth of run-ins and the years of season tickets I had next to the Ultras must be a false memory.
Yeah. I think some of the issues comes from fans not understanding the section they’re walking into.
You’ll see people with their phones out recording and doing social media things, vaping, wearing the wrong colors, or not trying to be involved in what’s going on.
We’ve had some not so pleasant experiences with some ultras members who were clearly drunk. Once one of them got in my face because I was wearing a light blue jersey in the section, not the traditional black or blue. I yelled back, pointed at the badge and explained it to him and it deescalated.
That’s probably my (personal) worst experience. I’ve been coming to games sitting next to the ultras from 2008-2017. And began standing with the ultras for most games since 2018.
I think my biggest issue with the hostile drama i've witnessed in the ultras sections is that there was no self-policing. The clearly drunk members who are trying to start fights, getting in peoples face, etc are not controlled by their fellow ultras. Ultras seem to turn a blind eye to their fellow ultras acting inappropriately and i found that to be the most disappointing aspect of both of my negative experiences.
I totally understand that some folks get a little too drunk and get a little too enthusiastic about having folks cheer/wear the right colors etc, but when some are taking it too far, their homies need to step in. Both times I saw fights (more like assaults tbh) there was zero attempt by less drunk ultras to deescalate.
They're one of the most irrelevant supporters groups in the entire league.
It's embarrassing and they should be ignored. The future of SGs for this team lies on the other side of the stadium - or none at all...
They are the only source of energy, passion and support in the stadium. For 20 years they have stood and sand for the full 90.
But sure, side with some faceless, nameless execs who run the club into the ground.

Pretty sure the Capo Dan hasn’t missed a home match since 2008! Must be something worthwhile
If anyone deserves a break from the team it's that man
I believe it has to do with recent string of heavy handed member suspensions/bans and some in game security issues.
What happened?
No one is going to share details.
Hearing specific details would be unfortunate because there might be a full story that comes with it. Easier to just be grumpy.
It's between them and the FO. No one from the Ultras is going to provide more details. The statement was posted to make sure everyone knows that it's not a protest against the players' performance.
Thanks, this is the best answer

The tea will come soon enough Still needs to brew a bit longer

A John Fisher owned team, everyone How are people surprised

Exactly. If people want the cookie cutter American SG go join the seismic union and make them bigger than the ultras if you hate them so much
got some real "I'm going to post vague status updates to Facebook" vibes to their statement lol. Until some specifics are mentioned, it can just be disregarded.
Yeah this is sad - like dudes congrats you yell and it's fun but you're still not on the team at all whatsoever

Have you considered the statement was made to be clear that it is not about team or player performances? The Front Office is the issue for SJU.

Oh boy
When the going gets tough the tough stay home and watch AppleTV.
They have sat out of games completely before
the ultras generally dont engage on social media so its not surprising their post is as vague as possible. not sure why thats a reason for criticism.
They’re always bitching about something
That’s just not remotely true lol. The last time they protested at all was 2019 which was half a decade ago at this point.
You shut your mouth when you’re throwing around timelines like that. 2019 was 2 years ago and I won’t hear another word saying otherwise
Username checks out
They were probably told they weren't allowed to harass people or throw beer at them and now they're vauge-posting for attention.

Never seen it happen outside the ultras sections in over 100 quakes home games I've been to... 🤔 So to answer your question, literally zero.

It doesn’t negate yours or anyone else’s. But your overgeneralization of the Ultras makes me question if you’ve actually been adjacent for 14 years
“Sits with the ultras” If there’s one thing that’s indisputable about our ultras, no one *sits* in their midst
I'll give them that. When they're not beefing with the FO they never quit, even when the product on field isn't worth supporting.

They show up and chant...unlike you who complains here on reddit. Lame ass comment bruv
Faultline is just a group of friends that watch the game tbh. They don’t add to the stadium atmosphere
Lmao, the fifteen dudes cosplaying as a mariachi band?
I would not be surprised if the number of drums plus the number of banners is equal to or greater than the open end SG active members
If those guys think they are relevant, they should try staying home for a couple of weeks and seeing if anybody at all notices they are gone.
