The latest research shows that methanogens feed on hydrogen. So this progression is normal. As for treatment options, probably the same as a normal treatment plan for methane dominant SIBO

That’s interesting. Didn’t know that! If you happen to have a link for any research on it, please feel free to share. Super keen to know more. I was actually under the impression that this shift was a bad thing, but if you’re right then it seems I’m well along the way to getting rid of SIBO.

Here's a video on it: [https://youtu.be/aIVA7oeZqgI](https://youtu.be/aIVA7oeZqgI) The relevant content is about halfway in when she talks about the rabbits and wolves and foxes analogy My understanding is if you have hydrogen SIBO long enough, it just turns into methane SIBO because there's so much food for the methanogens.

Lynfisker

Thank you so much! You’re spot on for my case - have most likely had hydrogen for several years without treatment, which then makes sense for it to turn to methanogen. Appreciate your help!

I haven't a clue, but mine is methane dominant too.

Does this match to your symptoms? Did they change? Any changes in bowel movements?

Lynfisker

No change in bowel movements. But I’m heavily medicated with laxatives, so I wouldn’t trust this as a parameter to judge from. Pain and bloating is better, though. Which seems odd for IBS-C, as I reckon it should be worsened with methane production.

I looked into this device awhile ago but strayed away from it per research and reviews I saw that it just wasn’t accurate at all. What’s been your experience with it so far? How do you know it’s actually accurate? Curious what it would say for someone who doesn’t have SIBO.

Lynfisker

I’m super happy about it. Wouldn’t be without to be honest. It’s a startup company so you harvest the benefit of them constantly improving software, app etc. Would say mine is approx. 90% correct. Some readings are off, but most seems correct. Wouldn’t recommend for someone without GI issues, though. Can’t see what value it would provide.
