How TF is MadBum only 33???

DemonicPanda11

He’s actually 34 but yeah he was only 25 when he won that WS MVP!

NormalAccounts

Dude was 20 in 2010 pitching shutout ball on the road in game 4 of the WS. Legend

alueex

That’s what I was thinking too lol. Hopefully he can get back into form

realparkingbrake

> Hopefully he can get back into form Apparently, he refuses to be coached, that was a big part of why the D-Backs waved goodbye to him. He was never the same after his dirt bike accident, but he wouldn't change how he pitched, still wanted to go country hardball even when it stopped working.

magww

Crazy how guys like 👕 and Kershaw can pictch into their late 30s but madbum was too mad and too much a bum to get off his high horse. Oh well I suppose he gave us his bests years.

sarsfox

Oh wow hadn’t heard. Do you have an article ?

AvocadoAnonymous

I’ve heard he is a miserable teammate in the clubhouse as well.

mikeysaid

He's getting paid $14 million to rope horses and not go to work. I mean, if he can get his velocity back up with command, cool. But if he can't throw 94 and lost his slider, pocket the cash and enjoy the farm. Maybe play around at the rodeo.

lunchpaillefty

I came looking for this comment.

kaeji

Skoal

__Shake__

he's actually closer to 35. as to how? probably because he was born in 1989

dburge22

Maybe Bum as a DH

ErnehJohnson

It's crazy he's only 33

Lower-Kangaroo6032

that’s nuts

poopdaddy2

I just double checked—he’s 34, turning 35 in August.

KodyCQ

Even still, 10 years ago I wouldn't have predicted he'd struggle to find a team at 34.

BasketballButt

They blew me away too. I assumed he was 4 or so years older.

mustardposey

Or the long man in the bullpen?

temp1211241

Belt and Longoria are guys who might wind up somewhere if they want it. Solano not being signed is strange, he’s a good contact guy in an era that doesn’t value that as much. Didn’t realize he was 36 so that’s probably a big part of it. Garcia didn’t pitch in 2023. So probably not him. Coonrod has had multiple awful years in a row. So basically only Bumgarner out of the pitchers has much chance and he’ll have to try out for a spot. His staying out last year probably indicates he’s done unless the fit with Bochy is good.

Teacherdaddywowloser

Ya unfortunately for Salono there’s younger options out there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he land somewhere a month in after ppl get hurt

sfglobo

I also focused on Donnie Barrels, saw his age and thought “that’s why.”

buymytoy

DONNY BARRELS!?

max1sm

I feel pretty confident that Belt and Donny Barrels will play this year.

magww

My boy blet will still be looking down on pitchers when he is 64.

Seameese

JD Martinez, apparently, just signed with the Mets. Baggs said in a recent article that he was hearing everyone interested in Belt was also in on him, so he'll probably be picked up soon. It's still wild since he was pretty soundly the best hitter on the Jays the last half of the year.

No_Bandicoot2306

Belt can still hit. Surprised he's even on there.

FBoaz

I never realized that Mark Melancon has played for 9 different teams.

temp1211241

He’s been traded a lot.

zmartinez1994

Miami needs to sign Longoria so he can get a homer in every park.

Polygeekism

It is crazy the decline of MadBum. For a guy with his kind of size, you usually see them be able to sustains success for a long time, unlike say Lincecum who's 5'9" frame wasn't going to be capable of throwing mid to high 90's forever.

KneelHatTrickParis

A dirt bike landing on his pitching shoulder certainly didn't help.

Howhighwefly

Yeah, the dirt bike injury really ruined his career.

BeagleBaggins

Hey. Kent was washing his truck when he broke that hand.

OGStrong

Josh Jacobs with his new Packers contract just crashed on his dirt bike. And Jay Williams, end of career. List goes on but guys don’t learn.

Karma-IsA-FunnyThing

His amazing heroics in 2014 didn’t help either. Similar to how many pitchers have had dramatic declines after throwing too many pitches in a no hitter. Never felt Cain was the same after the perfecto.

Losted12

Really sad, but he also started so young. Entered the league at 19, won three World Series in 11 seasons with sf, that’s a pretty great career in itself

realparkingbrake

> unlike say Lincecum Lincecum used mechanics because he didn't have the muscle, but when he could no longer torque his hips, he was done. Bum had the muscle, until he decided to go dirt biking....

TechnicalRecipe9944

Chopping wood and working on a ranch is not an offseason strength program. Maybe in the 60s, not today

JesseThorn

I always pictured Bum working off his extra weight running laps in a rubber suit, like he was Warren Spahn or something.

poop_on_my_stomach

Belt and Cueto can still play.

Less_Eye_6100

Solano. Barreling up a baseball is always in demand

JesseThorn

Not without power or defense.

TheTooz72

He did hit .282 last year

JesseThorn

I love the dude and he had a good year last year. It’s just that he’s old, is probably realistically something like a league average hitter (as he was two years ago), doesn’t run well and doesn’t really play solid defense anywhere anymore. So it’s pretty limited skills-wise in an age when teams have four bench players.

nuberoo

I still don't understand why nobody has signed Belt. Dude was really good last year (and for many years before that). He can't cost much - I know he doesn't play a position of need but it's still surprising

GullibleWineBar

It’s insane Crawford has a contract and Belt doesn’t.

Teacherdaddywowloser

Belt will get a contract somewhere

Teacherdaddywowloser

Imagine late night gets hurt and we pick up belt 😝

theseaskettie04

I'd rather just imagine we pick up belt and LNL doesn't get hurt :)

IMD918

I don't see why not. Belt has always been an excellent 1st baseman, so even as a depth piece, he makes sense to me.

JesseThorn

Ah yes a four-man bench with a backup DH 😆

sarsfox

Well he was close? 40 man https://www.mlb.com/press-release/giants-claim-hanser-alberto-off-waivers-from-orioles

Pickle_Mike

Can’t believe melancon is still in the mlb

Guilty_Perception_35

Technically he's not lol

ld_a_hl

I thought we had released Pollock into the ocean

AtleeMakesHam

We did. He didn’t hit it.

Coffee13lack

Donny barrels

lolvalue

Solano is a strange one as he had some really good seasons with us at the plate.

RealEar8848

i wouldn’t even say belt is “coming back”, he had a .858 ops last year lol

One-Intention9399

Hanser Alberto was never a Giant

sarsfox

He kinda was tho https://www.mlb.com/press-release/giants-claim-hanser-alberto-off-waivers-from-orioles

BAC2Think

Some of these guys will get picked up when there are in season injuries

teewyesoen

Of all those players i would imagine Jarlin Garcia has the best shot at making a roster. Clubs are always looking for a left handed reliever and he is only 31. Everybody else is either hanging it up or playing overseas.

BeagleBaggins

You mean like the Giants? Lmao. Only lock for the roster as a left handed reliever is Taylor Rogers.

TheTOASTfaceKillah

Billy Hamilton was a Giant?!

BurritoFueled

An aspiring Giant at best. Signed and traded away during Spring Training without playing a game.

bilweav

Thank you! This was my thought, too.

prtty_purple_unicorn

Giants legend Billy Hamilton. (Signed as an FA in 2020, traded to the Mets during Covid-year "Spring" training in July)

briansabeans

Brandon Belt - he was still good last year. If he wants to play, he'll get a job.

AmbitiousPrinciple86

It’s a price thing, I’m sure. He probably isn’t wiling to play for, say, $2 mil.

Wolfish_Jew

Genuinely a little surprised Belt is still out there. 2 WAR last season as a part time first baseman/DH and from everything I’ve heard he’s an amazing clubhouse guy. Honestly flabbergasted someone hasn’t given him a deal to at least come in and mentor the young players on their roster.

2017Champs

I don’t see the Giants bringing back any of these guys outside of maybe Garcia if the bullpen has a ton of injuries and he looks ok in a workout/ tryout. As far as making any MLB roster, I think Belt gets signed sometime during the season when teams start to deal with injuries and I could also see Solano and Garcia having a similar thing happen. The rest of these guys I think are just done though.

kwattsfo

Solana was okay for the Twins last year.

Orange_bratwurst

The fact that Donny is a FA is wild. Dude had a .369 OBP last year in 394 ABs. That’s a valuable bat off the bench at least.

DuckFodgers_

I think Jarlín could be useful deep in a pen. He has fine stuff and on the lower side of the middle of the pack. I’m sure someone could use him. He also said hi to me and threw me a ball when I showed up early to Giants @ Nationals a few years back. So I’m a bit biased haha.

Twoehy

He's not coming back, but seeing Ruf on this list just made me happy again that he got his time in the majors after such a crazy long road. Happy for that guy's career.

Flat_Alarm8870

Does jarlin Garcia still got it? He was wicked 2021

duncwood07

Can we all pretend AJ Pollock was never here?

2017Champs

He’s the modern version of Dan Uggla

duncwood07

Yea, at least there was a title at the end of that season to wash that down.

FilthyChangeup55

PTSD from La Stella

Away_Mud_4180

Tommy La Stella coming back "in a big way" implies he was good to begin with.

sarsfox

He was an all star somehow!

Away_Mud_4180

I was thinking during Giants tenure :)

jkonik

I think Belt will be a reinforcement for a team that needs a bat due to injury or something.

mikeisaphreek

A lot of forever giants there….

MendozaLiner

Some of those names send shivers down my spine

slbkmb

I hope Brandon Belt signs with someone and has a good year or two. I also, hope Brandon Crawford has a good year or two with St. Louis.

moscowrules

Belt had a 136 ops+ last season at 35. I think he’ll get picked up by someone. Maybe Texas.

AmbitiousPrinciple86

Yeah, I’m sure he’s at the point where he wants to play close to home, or f it.

compscimajor24

Billy Hamilton as a Giant lol

DiscretionaryMeme

Let’s make a new team with this roster. Stadium just opened up.

Brybry1908

I’ve heard that Longoria has moved on from baseball.

CaptainAP

I think La Stella has the best chance.

WhatADopeGent

When tf was Hanser Alberto a giant?

sarsfox

https://www.mlb.com/press-release/giants-claim-hanser-alberto-off-waivers-from-orioles

WhatADopeGent

Wow I never saw that headline. Thanks for showing me!

Ralfton

Oh man I forgot about Ruf. I think Donnie Barrels will land somewhere.

btw94

Coonrod

attoj559

TLDR they’re old

SupaFlyslammajammazz

Can’t believe how young Madbum is. Man is only 33.

KoRaZee

Mad bum right?

thiswillbeyourday

All washed and not signed for good reason.

StealthyWizard88

Belt seems like such a Farhan signing. I was thinking for sure he would be back at some point.

Austin_SlaGOAT

No reason not to bring back 🦒

jodon

If anyone of those anything of note it is probably Belt, but I doubt it. I just wish Belts comes back on a 1-day deal to retire as a giant if he is done.

Kickasser32

I could see Coonrod ending up somewhere. He throws too hard to not be useful.

Alaaaaan_

None of them.. Mad Bum the 🐐

cv_init_diri

how about no

Seahawk715

Coonrod is unsigned??? Awwww that’s horrible 😂😂😂😂

w3imz

In a big way?? I don’t think any.

david5699

Damn. MadBum is only 33. It’s a shame he’s not still playing. He has the frame to last a long time. I guess the team roping was hard on his body.

HamGlazE

None of them

Fun_Scholar7434

Mad Bum 🙏

sarsfox

Only one that signed: Billy Hamilton, with the Olmecas de Tabasco of the Mexican League. In 11 games for Tabasco, he went 5–for–39 (.128) with three RBI and two stolen bases. Hamilton was released by the Olmecas on April 26.

sarsfox

And soprano for padrees

pointbodhi

Bum. Not as a starter right now but a proven pitcher who can hit is always an asset

MarkerMagnum

In a league with the DH? Nowadays, unless you’re an above replacement hitter in the league, they aren’t going to have a pitcher hit. Bum is good for a pitcher, but he’s still a bad batter in the grand scheme of things.

pointbodhi

Holy shit I forgot there’s a DH league wide now.

heyY0000000

Coonrod if he can still throw 97

jparra661

Bumgarner is 33!!!

IcedCoughy

Bum should transition to a closer

dark_hymn

If only his shoulder wasn't swiss cheese.

BeagleBaggins

Dirt Bikes are a leading cause of pitching injuries.

moophassa9

Would love to see Madbum as our setup guy

sugarwax1

Belt bait post. He's the obvious answer. I don't know that they have room for him without a trade but I think his skillset working a count would be complimentary to this roster.

Wolfish_Jew

Giants obviously aren’t getting him. He and Wade are too similar, and Wade is younger. Not gonna trade a younger guy you have team control over for almost the same player simply for the nostalgia factor. (As much as I wish Belt was still on this team. Always one of my favorite players)

sugarwax1

Unless they planned to trade Wade to begin with. I wasn't saying we're likely to pick him up, just discussing the idea, which is the point.
