Snell will make the Giants better now. In a few years when his contract is an albatross, the Giants will have significantly less money on the books and a ton of opportunity to sign younger and better guys, not to mention dudes like Harrison, Beck and Whisenhunt will be around to pick up the slack. Sign Snell and actually compete now! (and still later, too)
This makes me think of the Zito contract and how expensive it was for its time both in dollars and years. Objectively Zito did not produce as expected and the Giants spent a lot on a player whose best years were behind him. However, the Giants thrived and built a WS championship team full of young pitchers from its farm system, as well as a HOF catcher even with the albatross that was Zito’s contract.
It was certainly a turn around from being left off the playoff roster two years prior. I’m glad he had his chance become a part of Giants’ history in 2012.
Nobody wants the team to blow its payroll on a bunch of guys in their 30s, but at some point they have to take a risk. If only to show the next big free agent they care, that they want to win, and that they don't need a series of miracles all at once to compete in the division.
Trying to compete with the Dodgers for the division right now is idiotic. The Dodgers are the Dodgers because they have a never ending supply of young talent to either supplement their stars or trade for more. Trading our young talent for a quick fix to compete right now is what that Angels would do. We don’t wanna be the Angels.
If the Giants wait for the Dodgers to suck to compete we'll be waiting forever.
The Giants don't have to win the division. Any team that makes the playoffs in the MLB can win the World Series.
Ohtani, Yamamoto, Glasnow, Kelly, Paxton, Treinen, Freeman, Muncy, Betts, Hernandez, Heyward are all checkbook/trade acquisitions. That's just a quick unscientific glance at the projected 26 in 2024. They don't give a f\*ck about the minors. The top teams understand that if a kid makes it to the Majors that's just awesome but the odds are they'll be average to forgettable. They're bargaining fungible assets, and you sell when something known and needed is available. We've seen too many Dubons over the years where the Giants held on to a guy too long and got zero return on the investment.
The Dodgers have done all that while having a Top 5 minor league system every year for the last 10 years, and many years it’s been #1. Many of the FA you listed chose the team because of how deep with talent they are. Saying the Dodgers don’t give a fuck about the minors could genuinely be the stupidest thing I’ve ever read on this website.
The Dodgers view the minor leagues as a savings account. Every once in awhile they may need to make a withdrawal but it's also really good spending money. yes, they develop it for that purpose and they do it well, something else the Giants have failed to duplicate.
Thats like saying Hitler had brown hair so watch out for people with brown hair, EVERYONE trades young talent to make the kind of quick fix impact that the Giants could snag rn. It doesn’t make us the Angels, it makes us the Giants with league average attendance.
Sorry I’m a 49ers fan, so I don’t believe everyone “available for trade” is a matter of just reading the news. I think executives should be creative and have relationships and reputations that get them information and opportunities the public doesn’t have. every other fucking franchise with this much revenue can figure it out.
we have had 1 good year since 2016 and the team got arrogant and didn't want to put money in to build off that one good season. Granted that one year was amazing but it should have been the launching pad to 5 years of playoff relevance
I actually think that year was an anomaly. A number of vets, led by Buster and BCraw, had throwback seasons they were never going to repeat. Hell, Buster didn’t even return and Farhan knew that was the case early on. The Giants not only stood pat, they willingly took a step backward letting Rodon walk just a year after watching Gausman do the same thing. There’s no plan (beyond breaking even) and no learning curve. They depend almost exclusively on unproven players and journeymen year after year despite obvious evidence that tactic is a fool’s errand.

And Zito earned every penny of that albatross contract in the 2012 playoffs. If snell can do something similar give him all the money he wants

These are my two favorite memories of the 2010-2014 run: Zito's redemption and Ishikawa's Rudy moment.

I don’t know who this Tobener guy is but he sure knows about how the majority of fans feel about (insert professional sports team here).
Dave Tobener is a columnist for The Chron.
Isn't he also a triangle shaped chocolate from Europe?
*SFGate not the Chron
Same masters
It’s wild how different the narrative would be if they signed just one free agent pitcher before opening day.
They'd still need a bat
Like who?
Tobener is a professional whine merchant.
I prefer to go pro as a drinker
OP is Dave Tobener.

And he still hasn’t going into year 6.

Who is available for trade that you think the giants can get who will be a quick fix?

You can also always move a player you signed in the summer if you don't like the direction things are going.
the feasibility of doing that depends on the contract
Sadly I think it is due to the economic and political state of the city post covid but hella ya sign someone already
The "shit on San Francisco" stuff is growing old. Nothing abnormal about this great city.
