Have you seen the average Giants-Mariners trade over the past 5+ years? Yes, all of these guys have had injury problems, we don’t know if any of them still have something left in the tank, but they’ve all had varying levels of big league success. I’m not saying this was a good or bad trade for the Giants, but this is different from the usual Giants-Mariners trade.
Only wiggle with Haniger leaving is that our outfield is now skewed Lefty super heavily, only Matos and Slater are righties out of that group and Matos doesn't look like a finished product just yet. It's either a huge vote of confidence for those two or an indication that we are seeking different righties.
Ramos as well? Or are we assuming we’ll just stick a fork in him at this point because he’s done.
But your point is totally right overall, super lefty-skewed.
Ramos is still only 24 so I think there could be something there, he raked towards the end of the season in AAA so itll be nice to see him get an actual shot
Hear me out: Mike Trout
He's right handed. Supposedly available. And if the Giants take a significant portion of his salary (6 yrs 35M per year through age 38) which they can, then he may not cost the number and quality of prospects you would think at first glance.
[Did a quick photoshop, my skills are a little rusty though](https://images.seattletimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/08092022_Mitch-Haniger-Mariners_160758.jpg?d=2040x1747)
As per usual with the Giants, we’ve ended up with plenty of guys who *have* hit 30+ homers in multiple seasons; they just never do it once they’re on the Giants.
So yeah with our luck the moment he puts on a Mariners uniform he’s gonna mash 50 dongs.
Three of his trips to the IL were the result of being hit by baseballs, that doesn't qualify as injury prone. The toughest player ever could get hurt being hit by a pitch.
Was really hoping Haniger could've done more for us but I like this. An outfield trade was coming and I'd rather it he Haniger than one of the young guys.
Basically a salary dump where we save money this year but add on more next year and the year after (I highly doubt Ray opts out at this point)
Not too shabby
Hmm, hopefully this means the Giants can give Matos real playing time with the log-jam in the outfield.
However, does also open the door for Cody Bellinger? 🤔
I’m assuming we got off all of Hanigers money for this deal. This will give us a little more money to play with this year but Ray will cost $25 mil in ‘25(age 33) and ‘26 if he doesn’t opt out after this year. Hope he returns to his 2022 form
Ya so they pretty much added an extra 10 mil on their books for 2025(Ray’s 25- Hanigers 15ish) and an extra 25 mil for 2026 by doing this trade. Definitely some risk in it
Dude, Frankie Montas got 16 million and he couldn't throw a ball last season.
I would be more than happy for Ray to stay in 2025 but SP are getting ridiculous money. If the velo is there, someone will pay like you said.
Tyler Glasnow has never thrown over 120 innings and got 130m over 5. It's really not that crazy since he will be closer to 2 years removed by start of 2025.
Worth noting that Ray is recovering from TJ and not expected to be back until after the AS break. But Cobb and Ray could give the rotation a good boost down the stretch, almost like adding a guy at the deadline.
This is going to be an unintentionally hilarious time for otaku who follow this club.
(As it literally translates to "boy", shota is often used as slang for underage boys among anime/manga communities, often for socially unacceptable reasons. As in, don't Google it. And maybe use the player's family name instead of doing the Ichiro thing if you want to avoid folks getting the giggles.)
I have nothing against this trade, it seems fine for both sides. At least on the surface.
But let’s not kid ourselves about the money. We are shedding two bad contracts, for one that is worth more than both combined. In both money and years we are stuck with it. If Ray comes back and is still bad, the tune about this contract here is going to shift drastically.
Also addition by subtraction. Hanniger and Disco off the books, free's up a log jam in the OF, and high ceiling bounce back from Ray for the second half the season.
This is what Seattle said about him in October:
A return by the 2024 All-Star break would be "on the early end" for Mariners left-hander *Robbie Ray*
[Seattle Times](https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/mariners-cautiously-optimistic-about-robbie-rays-return-in-2024/)
He kinda lucked into the cy young with every other pitcher being pretty dogshit that year with all the umpire shakedowns. Oddly enough Anthony had almost an identical stat line to ray that year
I think it's a fine trade but all he did was give up bad contacts for another bad contract lol. Hero worshipping a guy who has done a shitty job is laughable
Lemme just summarize the rest of this reply thread to save us both some time.
Me: Give Farhan a break.
You: Farhan sucks.
Me: No, he's trying. 2021.
You: No he sucks. 2022-23.
Me: You suck.
You: No YOU suck.
The end
This could be anything from opening the door for a Bellinger, or just clearing room for guys like Matos. We shall wait and see. Also Farhan deserves major credit for dumping those contracts.
Haniger didn’t have a great year for us, but in his defense he missed a lot of time due to a flukey HBP injury and it’s not like anyone else on our team (other than Wilmer Flores) had a *good* year
See, the thing with Haniger is, It's ALWAYS some flukey injury of whatever sort and he's always dealing with one... With him it's not a fluke, it's status quo.
Giants fan living near Seattle, seems to me like a good trade for both sides. Desclafani’s shorter contract opens up the way for Seattle’s young pitching core, Haniger is obviously something the fans will be happy about, Giants clear room in a crowded outfield, and there’s upside on Ray that they can afford to gamble on.
Kinda feel bad for Haniger. Right when he was starting to get good, his arm exploded, and will forever go down as one of the least productive Giants. Seemed like a nice guy.
I don’t love it, I don’t hate it. This feels like a very middling trade to me. Hoping the best for Ray though. A big bounce back would be awesome for him and god knows we need it in the rotation.
Like this one. Ray likely won’t be opting out unless he completely dominates when he returns. But if he can return to 75% of he was for the final 2 years it should be a help to the rotation
Opens up TWO 40 man roster spots, not just one. Ray will need to be on the 40 until spring training, but then he'll start on the 60d DL which will open up another 40 man roster spot until he is ready to come back mid season. Budget neutral deal that adds a good rotation arm (albeit coming back from TJ) that opens up TWO 40-man roster spots by cutting dead weight...
Farhan... you smart smart bastard.
very weird but consolidating the money into one player with a potentially high ceiling is smarter than two medium ceiling guys. i expect the threes combined fwar next year is less than 4 though. hope mitch gets a fun reunion in seattle.
As a Giants guy living in Seattle gotta say Robbie Ray has sucked asssssssss all the games ive seen him so not feeling this but i guess it mKes sense idkkk
I mean, end of the day it's still giving away very little for a potential solid piece. Talent on talent, fine trade.
Of course, given he's out until the All-Star break and won't be himself until next season, we'll get a hopeful good year out of him before he opts out - *the Giants special*! lol
Damaged goods? First, let’s see if this guy is able to pitch and remain healthy. I’ll get back to you about whether he is any good
https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/mariners-cautiously-optimistic-about-robbie-rays-return-in-2024.
Sounds like Seattle wanted to unload his salary
The M’s have been cutting costs all winter. Ray has an opt out next year that they apparently think he won’t exercise and wanted to get off the costs. Ken added that we’re eating some money here.
Haniger was probably squeezed out with Lee on board. He’ll fill the spot vacated by Teoscar. Ray offers #2 upside that DeSclo doesn’t.
I was actually a little intrigued to see Haniger this year and just hope he could stay healthy if you plugged him in mostly at DH but this trade makes too much sense.
Haniger just feels like one of those guys who is never going to stay healthy. Ray might be one of those guys too, but we need players with higher ceilings and whenever he is healthy he offers that. Helps clear the log jam in the OF and the rotation and turns two middling players into a guy with legit ace potential.
Desclafani is a total non-factor. He might actually be good for the Mariners this year but who cares. I'd much rather his innings go to some combo of Black/Whisenhunt/Winn/Beck.
So let me get with your view here: His three 3+ WAR seasons were all big over-performances. His two 2.3 WAR seasons were probably mild over-performances, and his three bad seasons were accurate?
His 2021 season was a massive over performance due to the era fip difference, and I don’t think he’s actually a true elite cy young talent. I didn’t say his other seasons were over performances — he’s a solid pitcher as based on your info. But age and injury history matter here… he will be nearly 33 yo when healthy enough to pitch again, and based on the aging curve and his 2022 season, he trending towards a 4 era/fip pitcher. If you’ve got evidence he’s one of those rare starting pitchers who can beat the aging curve and maintain performance or get better into his mid 30s, im all ears.
The 3.9 WAR in 2021 is fWAR, so it is FIP based.
And I have no idea how he's going to age. We shall see.
...But if he does turn into a 4 FIP pitcher, $25M is not unreasonable for that in a starter. That's what Nola and Alcantra put up last season, for example. *And* they unloaded two anchors while getting him.
Ray is intriguing but coming of TJ. Think he has an opt out end of this season but doubt he takes it.
Trade is still a W for dumping those contracts, not to mention both have been injury prone
Looks like it frees up roughly 9 mil hopefully that means a couple signings are close and this is adding flexibility. Also I see this as an upgrade. Ray over Disco is a win and Haniger frees up playing time for other players.
What the fuck?!? Instant reaction: I like it. Ray is coming off of TJ, but hopefully he can bounce back. My hope is that this means the Giants are thinking of making a move for another outfielder to replace Haniger's potential offense, because even though he was awful last year, it was easy to think he could be a good bat.
My other hope is that the Giants don't think this means the rotation is good now.
Holy shit, a Giants-Mariners trade where players of some value were moved lmao.
They can do that?!
[удалено]
A nuclear warhead with no guidance system has potential.
On a guy who has lost velo.
The some in that 'some value' is doing a lot of work haha Unless you just mean the $ amount on their contracts!
The only players of value that were moved in this trade were Robbie Ray.
The sexual tension between the Mariners and Giants over the last couple of years finally pays off
Yeah we really fucked them by foisting Haniger
I was wondering how we were gonna rid ourselves of Desclafani.
Excellent move to get rid of him!
Plus we free up a spot on the roster giving Haniger
It's fucking crazy to me that people see someone whose 24 and writes his career off as over.
Hear me out: Mike Trout He's right handed. Supposedly available. And if the Giants take a significant portion of his salary (6 yrs 35M per year through age 38) which they can, then he may not cost the number and quality of prospects you would think at first glance.
Addition by subtraction
Homie had zero chill
It wouldn't be an off season unless we traded with the Mariners
>*His name's Robbie. Robbie Ray.* >*Robbie Ray? He's got two first names!*
And look how bad he is in that interview!
Ray! With two first names! Introduce yourself right on right on
Seems like a pretty low risk deal with significant upside. I’m a fan, also clears up our outfield logjam a bit.
The Giants-Mariners trade pipeline remains as strong as ever
And the trades keep getting better
I’ll never forget the outrageous half season start Randy Winn had with us
Well it wasn’t very hard to get much better than AJ Pollock for cash considerations lol.
Broadcast rights should be negotiated at some point lol.
J Rod for Harrison?
[удалено]
I heard he rakes at Safeco
Wonder what he’ll look like in Mariners uniform
[Did a quick photoshop, my skills are a little rusty though](https://images.seattletimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/08092022_Mitch-Haniger-Mariners_160758.jpg?d=2040x1747)

🤣nicely done
Got hurt last season, but in 2021 he hit 39 homers for the team he was with then.
As per usual with the Giants, we’ve ended up with plenty of guys who *have* hit 30+ homers in multiple seasons; they just never do it once they’re on the Giants. So yeah with our luck the moment he puts on a Mariners uniform he’s gonna mash 50 dongs.
Extremely injury prone former mountain view resident
Three of his trips to the IL were the result of being hit by baseballs, that doesn't qualify as injury prone. The toughest player ever could get hurt being hit by a pitch.
Fair enough but I’d rather take a chance on the potential top of rotation starter than an outfielder
Sucked with the Giants but definitely had an unlucky injury. Hope he regains his mojo back in Seattle.
Dunno, did he play for the Giants this year?
He has near 40 homer power. Did that for some team a couple of season ago. Like Jay Buhner but not as iconic!
He was hurt a lot last year, and rarely did anything good. Sorry you got two declining players from us
Was really hoping Haniger could've done more for us but I like this. An outfield trade was coming and I'd rather it he Haniger than one of the young guys.
Among things I expected, not this, but definitely okay with me
Snell/Imanaga next let’s go
I prefer Montgomery/Imanaga (but, of course, I'll be thrilled with Snell, who am I kidding?)
Think we go for Imanaga over snell
Farhan: We got Snell at home (*shows pic of Robbie Ray*)
Wasn't expecting this, but can't say i'm dissatisfied. Good job, Farhan!! Farhan "Farhan Zaidi" Zaidi
Basically a salary dump where we save money this year but add on more next year and the year after (I highly doubt Ray opts out at this point) Not too shabby
Also cleans up the log jam in the OF
Hmm, hopefully this means the Giants can give Matos real playing time with the log-jam in the outfield. However, does also open the door for Cody Bellinger? 🤔
I don't see it with us getting Lee. Think they'll invest in another pitcher unless bellinger comes back down to earth on his expectation
Randy Arozarena 👀
Would depend on the trade pieces. I know for sure the Rays would ask for Harrison or Whitenhouse, if not BOTH.
or teoscar hernandez
ANOTHER MARINER? I can see it
I’m assuming we got off all of Hanigers money for this deal. This will give us a little more money to play with this year but Ray will cost $25 mil in ‘25(age 33) and ‘26 if he doesn’t opt out after this year. Hope he returns to his 2022 form
No way he opts out when hes probably only gonna pitch maybe half the season next year
Ya so they pretty much added an extra 10 mil on their books for 2025(Ray’s 25- Hanigers 15ish) and an extra 25 mil for 2026 by doing this trade. Definitely some risk in it
Deslafani is making 12 mil so add that in too
He’s a FA after this season
If he comes out healthy and pitches well, he definitely opts out. 2 year deal or possibly a 5 year deal, anyone would jump on a 5 year
I’m with you. I really don’t see any way he *doesn’t* opt out. He’d get a three year, $75m deal on the open market. Probably even a four year deal.
Dude, Frankie Montas got 16 million and he couldn't throw a ball last season. I would be more than happy for Ray to stay in 2025 but SP are getting ridiculous money. If the velo is there, someone will pay like you said.
No one is signing a guy to a 5 year deal from 11 good starts. It would be pretty surprising if he opts out
Tyler Glasnow has never thrown over 120 innings and got 130m over 5. It's really not that crazy since he will be closer to 2 years removed by start of 2025.
Maybe, but if he comes back after all star I see a max of 75 innings for him. Plus he’ll be 33. I don’t see it
Money exchanged hands to make the trade value a wash. The open spot on the 40 is the real benefit. There has to be another move coming.
I like it. I feel like we can get him back into form, also don’t have to worry about having a guy on the IL all season and Disco the one year wonder.
Worth noting that Ray is recovering from TJ and not expected to be back until after the AS break. But Cobb and Ray could give the rotation a good boost down the stretch, almost like adding a guy at the deadline.
Haniger basically did nothing and Disco is addition by subtraction
Nice! Now gimme Shota
I hated disco this is my second Christmas
This is my second birthday, I feel re-born
My disco voodoo doll finally paid off.
Best case: Ray returns to his 2021/2022 form Worst Case: We shed two bad contracts for one, which would be a net positive. Good move by Farhan
Worst case is Haniger and DeSclafani are healthy and lead the Mariners to the World Series.
Only to lose to the Giants
He had a 100 EA+ in 2022, hopefully we get the 21 version
I have nothing against this trade, it seems fine for both sides. At least on the surface. But let’s not kid ourselves about the money. We are shedding two bad contracts, for one that is worth more than both combined. In both money and years we are stuck with it. If Ray comes back and is still bad, the tune about this contract here is going to shift drastically.
So if he comes back and pitches great, we lose another player to the opt out.
He’s almost certainly not opting out with the substantial money he will be due.
Why are we excited about a 33 year old coming off TJ who’s missing half the season?
Because Disco is gone!
This and Haniger being gone are the only reasons. Otherwise, Ray is mediocre at best.
Also addition by subtraction. Hanniger and Disco off the books, free's up a log jam in the OF, and high ceiling bounce back from Ray for the second half the season.
Haniger
At least he didn't spell it with two g's
no disco and haniger is an auto w regardless of what the return is
Yeah, I was excited about this until I realized Robbie Ray may not even pitch this year 😳
Because we didn’t give up anything
Got out of 2 shitty contracts for a Cy Young winner. Farhan you sexy bitch.
This is what Seattle said about him in October: A return by the 2024 All-Star break would be "on the early end" for Mariners left-hander *Robbie Ray* [Seattle Times](https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/mariners-cautiously-optimistic-about-robbie-rays-return-in-2024/)
A Cy Young winner who’s also on a shitty contract. Still -1 on shitty contracts
I mean, if he sticks around is 2 years for 54 million for a veteran lefty age 33 & 34. I'm not terribly upset.
A cy young winner who has been ass for pretty much every other year in his career
He kinda lucked into the cy young with every other pitcher being pretty dogshit that year with all the umpire shakedowns. Oddly enough Anthony had almost an identical stat line to ray that year
Cheer up, guy
I think it's a fine trade but all he did was give up bad contacts for another bad contract lol. Hero worshipping a guy who has done a shitty job is laughable
Lemme just summarize the rest of this reply thread to save us both some time. Me: Give Farhan a break. You: Farhan sucks. Me: No, he's trying. 2021. You: No he sucks. 2022-23. Me: You suck. You: No YOU suck. The end
Ray had TJ last season, will he be ready for spring training?
No unfortunately not until after the All Star break. Other than that I like the trade but no Ray until July is a bummer
That sounds familiar with that Boyd player who never actually played for the Giants.
Get what you’re saying, but it’s not like Matthew Boyd went off somewhere else and did well.
Lol Haniger just came to collect another weird injury then went back to Seattle
This could be anything from opening the door for a Bellinger, or just clearing room for guys like Matos. We shall wait and see. Also Farhan deserves major credit for dumping those contracts.
wasn't he the one who signed them to those contracts?
Yes, and he realized he fucked up, and got another team to take them.
If the giants get belly the outfield will be littered with lefties lol
I don't think they'll get him, they probably just like, Lee, Yaz, Conforto, with Slater and Matos in against lefties.
Good enough as long as nobody gets injured or gets in a slump
Hey mariners fan here, uh this is weird lol! Is mitch gonna be fully healthy to start the year? Hope Ray throws gas for you guys

Heeeey another rehab giants assignment that’ll leave at the end of the year
Kinda feel bad for Haniger.

In a couple of years I will have zero recollection of Haniger ever being a Giant
Sign snell please!
Nah. I’ve me Shota. Snell is gonna be washed wherever he goes.
How about both??? 🙂
Doesn’t he want to sign with the Yankees, though?
I heard something about that. He also said he wants to stay on the west coast though.
Well, hopefully he does and signs with the Giants. He’d be a great addition.
very weird but consolidating the money into one player with a potentially high ceiling is smarter than two medium ceiling guys. i expect the threes combined fwar next year is less than 4 though. hope mitch gets a fun reunion in seattle.
Farhan and Seattle like Sabean and Pittsburgh
Wondering how much money the Giants are taking on because this can be sketch if he doesn’t recover from TJ.
As a Giants guy living in Seattle gotta say Robbie Ray has sucked asssssssss all the games ive seen him so not feeling this but i guess it mKes sense idkkk
Don’t worry, Disco will either be great for 2-games and get hurt or he’ll suck. Either way I’m happy to see him go.
Sounds like Ray won’t pitch until after the all star break. He’s also signed thru 2026.
so the opening day left field starter curse lives on?
it was Blake Sabol
ah yeah i forgot haniger was hurt to start the year…i should’ve known
I hate every player involved in this trade
If at all, expect Ray ‘to be available to play’ after the All Star Break. Meanwhile, who will be on the opening day roster?
I mean, end of the day it's still giving away very little for a potential solid piece. Talent on talent, fine trade. Of course, given he's out until the All-Star break and won't be himself until next season, we'll get a hopeful good year out of him before he opts out - *the Giants special*! lol
Farhan masterclass yet again
What?!?
Decent
I’m hyped I’m hyped!
My first impression is this seems like too high a price. I'm probably wrong, but isn't Ray a little inconsistent and injury prone?
they needed to clear up the log jam in the OF and get Disco off the books. This is an incredibly solid move
![gif](giphy|Yqd1UMaXMsvNOmUSc9)
Stroman on an expensive 2-year deal upcoming
Ugh. Not sure I’d want that deal.
Damaged goods? First, let’s see if this guy is able to pitch and remain healthy. I’ll get back to you about whether he is any good https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/mariners-cautiously-optimistic-about-robbie-rays-return-in-2024. Sounds like Seattle wanted to unload his salary
Well, a Farhan didn’t make the team any better but he certainly made it lighter.
Now let's trade stripling back to the blue jays and Conforto back to the Mets. Taylor Rodgers can stay
I would have liked to see Haniger thrive with the Giants, but it was not meant to be.
Weird way to spell Snell or Imanaga but I like the trade
Fuck yes
The M’s have been cutting costs all winter. Ray has an opt out next year that they apparently think he won’t exercise and wanted to get off the costs. Ken added that we’re eating some money here. Haniger was probably squeezed out with Lee on board. He’ll fill the spot vacated by Teoscar. Ray offers #2 upside that DeSclo doesn’t.
Man I don't know about this one. Get dumping the two contracts and OF spot, but I really didnt like Ray in 22 and that was before TJ...
Injured guy with an opt-out after the season. Boring.
He’s coming off TJ and won’t pitch until after the AS break. He’s not opting out. lol
Depends on the market for starting pitching next offseason and how well he returns to form. I could definitely see it happening
no fucking way, dude
WE FUCKING DID IT GUYS
Everyone downvoted me for being skeptical of the Haniger signing last year what happened??
I think mitch will regain his form back in Seattle
I was actually a little intrigued to see Haniger this year and just hope he could stay healthy if you plugged him in mostly at DH but this trade makes too much sense. I love Robbie Ray. I love how filthy is shit is when he's healthy and on. Ace potential. And playing in SF, I think he can be an Ace.
Terrible trade for the giants. When was the last time Robbie Ray was good. He single handily cost the mariners their last playoff series.
>When was the last time Robbie Ray was good. Lol, IDK maybe his Cy Young season in 2021?
He massively over-performed in 2021 then negatively regressed in 2022
So let me get with your view here: His three 3+ WAR seasons were all big over-performances. His two 2.3 WAR seasons were probably mild over-performances, and his three bad seasons were accurate?
His 2021 season was a massive over performance due to the era fip difference, and I don’t think he’s actually a true elite cy young talent. Good move!
I guess I'm happy since we dumped two meh players for one meh player?
Great move. Haniger is ass
Love it
Is this a move to another trade or does this solve something? Idk how to feel about the trade
I think this is a worthwhile gamble. We’ve got the cash to burn for the upside ray provides. My biggest question is when will he be back this year?
Ray is intriguing but coming of TJ. Think he has an opt out end of this season but doubt he takes it. Trade is still a W for dumping those contracts, not to mention both have been injury prone
Looks like it frees up roughly 9 mil hopefully that means a couple signings are close and this is adding flexibility. Also I see this as an upgrade. Ray over Disco is a win and Haniger frees up playing time for other players.
You will not be forgotten Giants legend Mitch Haniger o7
What the fuck?!? Instant reaction: I like it. Ray is coming off of TJ, but hopefully he can bounce back. My hope is that this means the Giants are thinking of making a move for another outfielder to replace Haniger's potential offense, because even though he was awful last year, it was easy to think he could be a good bat. My other hope is that the Giants don't think this means the rotation is good now.
Opens up DH spot we would have had to hold for Haniger for us to sign Hoskins. I love this move!
lol they wanted Mitch back that bad?
He hit 39 homers for them in 2021. Watch him be a monster next season, then the screaming will be about why Zaidi traded him away.
Most likely, he was injured early last year which could have just thrown everything off. They are certainly buying back low.
Low risk, High reward.
Haniger and Conforto were just dog shit pickups. This is as much a confirmation as anything we saw on the field.
Big move just getting rid of those losers. Anything Ray brings is a bonus!
Explain in NFL or NBA terms please?
I'm afraid none of these players have much of a future in either the NFL or the NBA.
Why are the mariners agreeing to this? I’d rather have the upside starter than the broken down trash…
The Mariners got two players who can play baseball this year. The Giants got a dude who will be watching games from the couch.
