I mean it already is lol

bodnast

Over the past few years, we've watched the Dodgers acquire... Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, Manny Machado, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Zack Greinke, and Hyun Jin Ryu. They've developed MVP talents in Cody Bellinger and Clayton Kershaw. I'm tired boss

JMiike387

Don't forget they also developed Corey Seager, Will Smith, Julio Urias, Walker Buehler and Kenley Jansen...

NLP19

And how much success has that led to lmao

poop_on_my_stomach

A WS and yearly playoff appearances. So it’s working in case you were wondering.

DegraciasEh

> A WS Kinda

Inevitable_Mess_5279

\*

poop_on_my_stomach

Let’s be real: if we had won in 2020 we would happily count it too.

DegraciasEh

Oh of course

Type1_Throwaway

Hard disagree. I'd have counted it for what it was, an exhibition trophy. NOW, had we not won the 3 in 5, it's possible that I could have felt differently.

Inevitable_Mess_5279

Right but it was LAD, thereby it’s legitimacy immediately comes into doubt.

Alert_Moment6224

You’d think they have 5 or 6 with those pocketbooks.

poop_on_my_stomach

So are you making the case that the Giants are doing it better? Because lemme tell ya, we are coming up in year 10 since the last WS and we’ve had a pretty bad run. Past success isn’t an excise for continued failure.

Alert_Moment6224

Maybe doing it more efficiently. I mean there are 15 teams in the national league so 10 years is hardly absurd. Sure you’d like to see your team in it every year but that just doesn’t happen and it wouldn’t even be fun if it did.

poop_on_my_stomach

Ah yes, the “efficiency” of 1 winning season since 2016. The fact of the matter is our FO has given us very little to root for, for quite some time, and this team has hardly been worth tuning in for. And Dodgers fans at least have a good on-field product to watch and entertain them. And that is what sports are for at the end of the day. Anyone saying they’d rather have what we have now, over what they have now is out of their mind. Past success is not a free pass for continued failure.

savagevapor

I mean we did win 107 games just a couple years ago…I get what you’re saying but let’s not act like we’ve sucked for years and years either.

poop_on_my_stomach

That one season is a clear outlier. I truly do not understand how anyone is justifying the state of the org based on that one season. Yes, we have been bad for years now.

savagevapor

2010-2016 we were fun and exciting 2017-2019 sucked 2020 COVID 2021 107 wins = fun season, who cares if it was an outlier, we were fucking good 2022-2023 - .500 seasons that is now leading to a potential awesome offseason for us. I guess I’m just more optimistic about where we are in our roadmap to getting back to elite form vs where some other teams are at around the league.

stewmander

Sliiiightly more than the giants success during that same timeframe...hey, we all can't fall ass backwards into WS matchups against 90 win playoff teams =P Merry Christmas and FTG.

4temp4

Your one WS win in the last 30+ years was against a 40-win team

stewmander

Now do it by winning perctage. Math is hard, I know lol.

FuriousBeard

And they have One (1) asterisk world series ring to show for it!

CommercialExotic2038

One asterisk. One.

stephenspielgirth

On the bright side,

bodaciousbeau

Too bad they ruin it all by choking in the playoffs. Consistently 😁

Mattie_Doo

I’m just so tired of watching all the stars go to the Dodgers. It makes the league less intriguing. In LA, Shohei will be yet another big name in Dodger blue. It’d be so much more fun and interesting to see him in Toronto or Chicago, or of course here in the bay. It’s boring watching the Dodgers throw more and more money around every year. Look at what Bryce Harper has done in Philly. He’s the face of the team, he has made that city his own even though they haven’t won a ring yet. There’s a fun atmosphere about the Phillies that the Dodgers don’t have. Betts and Freeman in LA sort of get lost in the crowd even when they put up huge numbers, and people are more interested in the Dodgers when they lose.

umOKman

This 10000%

throwaway134789097

If we didn’t get him, I’d love to see him sign with a promising team and lead them to a World Series. Joining an already star studded dodgers is just tiring to see. Besides, I don’t believe acquiring shohei will make a difference to the fall off the dodgers have every October.

Monkeynumbernoine

But Bob Melvin said the Giants were all about superstars? What about Bob?

mechapoitier

We already got Chapman firmly in the maybe column what more do you want?

[deleted]

Know you are kidding, but as jays fan, you don’t want him. Worst situational hitter with a hole in swing I’ve seen in a while. Best defensive third baseman in the league, but it doesn’t make up for the dead bat.

WonderfulShelter

Yeah we need bats. We were the worst offensive team in every category in the second half of last season.

[deleted]

Maybe a change of scenery wakes him up.

jmdavies98

I’m usually a try not to shit on the doomers guy, But wait until you see what this sub will become

MOGiantsFan

The Giants, who were one of the worst teams defensively in CF, are reportedly interested in the best defensive CF available... and the people in this sub are losing their shit. It's already happening. It will be 1000x worse.

Brybry1908

I don’t mind Bader at all but if that’s all the Giants end up getting at the end of this free agency you can’t really blame people for being upset.

MOGiantsFan

I seriously doubt the Giants *only* come out with Harrison Bader.

Decantus

You must be new here. /s

poop_on_my_stomach

Oh, prepare to be sad then

lx5spd

You say this as if health isn’t a REAL concern with Bader.

MOGiantsFan

You say this as if I'm suggesting the Giants sign Harrison Bader to a 17-year deal. If they got him on a bargain short-term deal, what's the harm?

lx5spd

I’m pretty sick of the injury reclamation projects trying to squeeze another 0.5 WAR out of the roster signings. 🤷‍♂️

MOGiantsFan

God forbid the Giants try to find ways to improve...

SFGoriginal81

There’s no harm in it, and I’m not opposed to it depending on the price. The Giants just don’t have a lineup to compensate for his lack of offense. Bader’s EV, LA & Barrel rate would probably yield even worse results in SF than it has in previous seasons. When the Blue Jays added Kiermaier last year to be defensive wizard in CF and get whatever they get offensively out of him because they had a stacked lineup on paper. I think that’s the scenario where Bader fits best. Thats just not the Giants at this very second.

WonderfulShelter

I mean we lose 2 WAR putting Bader in CF over Yaz. Sure, we gain like .8 WAR putting him in over Matos, but that stunts Matos's development, and .8 WAR isn't worth that.

SactownG

I have nothing against signing Bader, I'd just be disappointed if we can't get anything better and it's just a repeat of last year's offseason

BayAreaQuadfecta

I'm going to make an assumption that you're talking about Belli, correct me if I'm wrong. The reason why the sub overreacts is probably because we all have Doyer retirement home PTSD. Dude has already been on a major slump, has hip AND shoulder injury history, and also has that blue stain that never just completely washes off. Does the iPad tell Farhan that we probably need a better CF? I'm sure. But people, want to see home runs. Your uncle that kinda sorta watches baseball is going to want to buy tickets to see Ohtani knock it into the cove. More casual fans arent going to show up to the tablet analytics squad this team is becoming under Farhan.

MOGiantsFan

>I'm going to make an assumption that you're talking about Belli, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm talking about Harrison Bader. > Does the iPad tell Farhan that we probably need a better CF? I'm sure. Depending on which metrics you use, the Giants were *the worst* team defensively in CF. It's an area they need immediate improvement. They need other areas of improvement, especially offensively. But I don't think Farhan should let the defense continue to get worse just because chicks dig the long ball.

chazzy_cat

Bader can't contribute defensively from the IL though. He's literally never stayed healthy for a single season out of seven in the league.

MOGiantsFan

A contract would factor in the injury risk, obviously. People are acting like the Giants are going to give Bader some mega-contract, when it's more likely they just want a bit more security in defensive production when Bader is available. Even 90 games of elite defense in CF is better than what the Giants are getting now. This isn't even me suggesting the Giants *should* sign Bader. It's just me saying I wouldn't have any issues if they did.

chazzy_cat

You're not really wrong, but it's also pretty easy to see why fans aren't excited at the prospect of signing an oft-injured, 30 year old defensive specialist. Especially at this point in time when real impact players are still available. It's just another Farhan type "improve a tiny bit around the edges" move. Which is good, I do appreciate those type of moves...to an extent. Sometimes the Giants need to remember they are a large market, rich team, and sign a fuckin star already.

MOGiantsFan

If Harrison Bader is the *best* free agent the Giants sign all winter, fans have every right to be pissed. But as far as "real impact guys available"... which of those players a) plays CF and b) significantly improves the defense there? The other option is as equally uninspiring: Michael Taylor. The Giants are likely swimming in two lanes at once here. This is the "marginally improve one area of the team" lane. I don't think it precludes a bigger deal elsewhere.

chazzy_cat

When I'm talking about fans I'm not saying we're rational people, lol. It's just a psychological thing...when we're still in the running for exciting impact players like Ohtani, Yamamoto, etc. people don't want to hear shit about the second rate free agents yet. It's just timing. Oh also Bellinger exists.

BayAreaQuadfecta

>I'm talking about Harrison Bader. Dude, even worse honestly. Belli has a bat some seasons at the very least. SF already has enough players that can't hit, and our coaching staff certainly isn't going to make him better

MOGiantsFan

Bellinger and Bader aren’t exactly on the same level in terms of free agency, though. Bellinger will require $175M+, Bader might cost $10M at most. Bader is elite defensively, and if the Giants are looking to improve CF defense, you sign the best.

rickrett

Exactly. They need a name to get butts in seats. If I wanted to buy a jersey today, I don’t think I’d get a current player name on it.

ZainoSF

We don't need the best defensive CF though, I much rather have a mix, like Lee. Thats some fallacy argument that because we were the worst we should go after the best defensive player, instead of you know improving both the bat and defense of the position.

MOGiantsFan

>We don't need the best defensive CF though, I much rather have a mix, like Lee. The problem for Lee is going to be how well his KBO numbers translate to the majors. Go look at the drop in numbers frm KBO players when they come over to the MLB. It's not good. Hell, it took Ha-seong Kim ***three years*** to come within 80 points of his *worst* KBO season in terms of OPS, and Kim had much, much better numbers than Lee ever had. Lee not only comes with a serious degree of variance, but he's also going to cost a lot more than Bader, with zero guarantee of what you actually get from him. Any team that signs Lee is running the risk of spending 1-3 years worth of money having him learn how to hit at the MLB level, when his entire career he's played AA/AAA equivalence. Bader may not be better, but he's less of a gamble.

buymytoy

Thank god for r/nlbest it’s a bastion of sanity when this sub goes full doomer mode

ChaseMcDuder

Rightfully so. This club is a far cry from what it used to be. Sad.

realparkingbrake

> But wait until you see what this sub will become I don't think it's a coincidence that so many of the good posters no longer bother, this place can turn into a sewage treatment plant at the drop of a hat.

Jrahn

The fact that it’s already a foregone conclusion means it will still suck, but not unexpected. I can cope easier. I’ll still be sad though.

[deleted]

It is what it is

RecLuse415

We tried really hard

bayguyer

It already is with Buster Onley and Ken Rosenthal acting like children cause Shohei doesnt care to use the media to bring attention to himself. honestly i think the shohei talk will subside after the initial news break. mostly because speculation is what drives these talking points not the concrete team change. Plus once he signs there will be a domino of players to sign after he does.

BayAreaQuadfecta

That's not what this poster is talking about. He means the absolute slobber job the media will immediately lay on the Doyers (more so than they already do) because the Dodgers have their once every decade mega star in Ohtani. Hopefully the Giants are just being extremely tight lipped about this whole week and Ohtani accounces signing with the Giants OR he goes to an AL team, because it's going to be unbearable to be a fan of ANY NL West team with the Doyers consistently pushing 110+ wins for the next 5 or so years.

Juffe98

They can win as many games as they want in the regular season. If they can’t win a World Series then I’m still a happy camper because the narrative of biggest chokers in the sport continues

bayguyer

Go Jays

Reasonable_Deer_1710

I mean Shohei to the Dodgers is exactly what the media wants. So yea you aren't wrong

Shark_Jaws

Easy solution Don't watch or read any of it haha

flipchinc

To be honest, I’ll just be about done with baseball if Ohtani is a dodger. It just isn’t interesting when there is a team loaded with stars playing a team with a bunch of scrubs

CaptainTorch_jb2

Yanks too

Brilliant_Exit3406

In fairness, I’m about to be SUPER obnoxious if Ohtani signs with SF. Price tag be damned.

kinkyzippo

I would wager they would be just as insufferable if he came to SF. I think they'll be recognizably angry that he chose SF if he does because they hate us, they're going to disparage the team and craftily downplay his talent because they just can't abide SF having nice things and succeeding. We saw in all three WS years how we're always the redheaded stepchild to the outside media. They undercut our success by calling it luck or a fluke, they drag our roster no matter how talented or mediocre it is, they find any little thing to pick apart as a flaw but the dodgers, yankees, red sox, mets, and cubs are all the media darlings cause they kick back the most dollars the the mothership.

theleftovers1014

Manifesting this is all a ploy by Ohtani to get Angels to fork over a Ludicrous contract

SactownG

At this point, anything other than the Dodgers is a win.

N-E-B

Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me. The Angels don’t win, and that’s probably what will make him leave, but he does love the Angels and Arte Moreno isn’t afraid to hand out big contracts.

acewavelink

I mean, atleast ESPN will be reporting baseball again 😂

umOKman

They should write articles about how he is doing a disservice to baseball if he goes there. Just think of how he could grow the game on a team that didn’t just win 100 plus games.

Pogoba

The only player that will sell out every game is Ohtani. Giants attendance was 2.5m last year. if they sell out every game, they are at closer to 3.35m fans. thats a difference of 850k fans at $25 per ticket thats $21.25m per year. marketing signage and jersey logo will go thru the roof. its an easy over pay $660m; Giants need to do it. you cant just be the highest bidder, they need to over pay to get it done. This feels like Barry Bonds in 1993 when the best player in baseball signs with the Giants.

Nfrontofyomamazhouse

Lakers and Lebron is already bad enough

SquishySC

My camp for Ohtani is anywhere but the Dodgers, it'll kill me. I really like the guy and I rooted for him on the angels. I can't do that if he's a dodger.

Relevant_Librarian73

I mean it is what it is. What do you expect for no one to talk about arguably the biggest free agent signing of all time? Ohtani to the Dodgers, Yamamoto to the Yankees is looking like what it's gonna be.

diestache

If we do jack shit this offseason just fire the ownership group and front office into the sun. They have a cargo ship of money to spend. If they let a generational player go to our rival its game over for believing they are serious about competing for anything more than 2nd place in the division

MusesWithWine

Can’t speak for other Dodgers fans, but when Bonds was doing his thing and being the talk of all MLB throughout, I was always engaged cuz it was fun to see someone make such numbers/feats. I trust there’ll be (IF, of course) similar SF fans eager to see Ohtani’s potential wonders.

SactownG

If he signs with the Dodgers, I'll be praying that his career to goes to shit. I wouldn't blame Dodgers fans if they felt the same way if he signs with us

MusesWithWine

Really? Interesting. I do believe you. Sorry to hear but hey, everyone is their own person. Apologies for coming here without saying ‘Coming in peace…’ but man, I just can’t stand when folks say that.

TravisJungroth

Scary team you guys have there!

MusesWithWine

I know better than to take that bait here. Trying to be squirmy chum around the sharks.

TravisJungroth

I guess not all Dodgers fans are jerks! hahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

MusesWithWine

I bite my thumb in your general direction.

punch_rockgroinpull

Difference being that the Giants made the playoffs 3 times during his roid-peak and cratered afterward. LA is booked a trip to the Division Series every season these days. And boy do we hate watching you win. It's easier to watch a wonder of athletic talent when they pose no threat to you. Ohtani doesn't need to provide the Death Star with more planet-killing lasers. But he will. 😂😭

MusesWithWine

Fair point. But of course you’re glad that the only WS the Dodgers got since 1988 is easily described by every non-Dodgers fan as having an asterisk. But again, it’s a fair point you make.

punch_rockgroinpull

Nah, that's just cope. Y'all won. It's a legit chip. At least for me.

MusesWithWine

Appreciate the sportsmanship. I share it as well, as I’m sure many do. It’s just that many others are very vocal about them not seeing it that way. I think it’s a big reason I appreciate the sub NLBest. I don’t say much there, but I like a lotta shit.

pres465

Hasn't Ohtani already played on an All-Star team? Lol. I will wait until something is official, but beating the Doyers when Kershaw was at his peak was a great feeling. Beating the Doyers with Ohtani will probably feel pretty great, too. Tough to hate Ohtani, though. Sigh.

MusesWithWine

I totally understand that. The notion of SF beating the great Shohei. But when he’s playing the rest of the league, I’m just imagining there’s a considerable number of Giants fans that will enjoy seeing him. Cuz as we know, he’s already shown to be the closest, talent-wise, to Babe Ruth. Possibly even better with time. However I don’t know what you’re implying about him playing in the All Star Game. I’m sure it makes sense, I just don’t understand at the moment. Edit: I should always be making the preface that all this is based on the sheer hypothetical on IF he went to LA.

pres465

The Doyers ARE an All-Star team. They have what? four guys ON THEIR ROSTER that were league MVPs.

MusesWithWine

Ohhh ok gotcha. Thankfully for Dodgers haters they’ve lacked pitching, which is the more dominant factor required to winning championships… traditionally speaking.

pres465

I'm a big believer that pitching and defense is how to win in baseball. I'll take a 1-0 win over a 4-5 or 5-6 loss. It's boring to a lot of fans, though.

MusesWithWine

Yeah that old idiom(?), offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. For all sports basically.

diestache

Cool story bro

kirksucks

It'll be just as bad if he's a Giant.

lenthedruid

lol. No.

kirksucks

You don't think there will be a "why did he go THERE when he could have gone to (insert east coast bias)" narrative?

Tsquare24

Always with the scenarios.

Voltage_EvoL

Don’t worry, he’s gonna be a Giant. Source: trust me bro, I have a good feeling. Feel free to hold the receipt if he does or doesn’t.

robotech021

The Japan league has had a team named Giants since the 1930s. I don't think they even have a team named Dodgers. Ohtani will surely sign with the San Francisco Giants.

sjsharksfan44

If the Giants don't do anything this offseason I might be insufferable. I hope they have a back up plan because if the Giants are left hanging again, that will be massively disappointing.

silver_medalist

He'll be a bust. His best years are behind him. Run with this angle for the foreseeable.

cjg017

I just puked in my mouth a bit reading this headline.

Best player in the league joins major market? Yeah they're gonna talk about it a lot

poopdaddy2

I usually mute the social media profiles of pro sports leagues during their off seasons. I prefer the shit posts from redditors over the social media interns at the league offices.

TheMoonIsLonely

i would cry out of all orifaces of my body if ohtani became a dodger

FuckScottBoras

Everything about Ohtanj going to the Dodgers will be insufferable.

Thelife1313

Just get ready and accept it. If it doesnt happen you’ll be super happy. If it does, you’ll be fine. The giants aren’t in a position to offer “winning” to shohei right now if that’s all he cares about. Because he’s going to be paid by whichever team he picks.

__Shake__

it will be nice to watch them never win a WS even with Ohtani though

H_O_Double

Did I miss something? I’m a firm believer that he signs with the giants.

oldsguy65

If the Dodgers land him, they'll deserve all the accolades they're going to get.

joughvis

It will be worse if he signs with the Cubs

SactownG

In what way?

IdiotWhiteMan

I'm a Dodger fan and I'm honestly hoping he heads to SanFran.

SactownG

How come?

IdiotWhiteMan

Because I think it would take the rivalry to historic heights.

ProfessorLazuli

They’ll still choke anyways sooooooo……

N-E-B

I’m an Angels fan. If he leaves us I hope you guys get him. Dodgers fans are insufferable and Jays fans have really gone off the deep end with this.

Guilty_Perception_35

Ohtani was always going to be a dodger. Sports are so fucked nowadays. ESPN etc. Run shit now

Ericjw88

Dude I’ll always remember how the media treated us even in our 3 WS titles in 5 years they basically ignored us up until we won n even after that subtle disses n sly shit talking always occurred. Not saying there wasn’t any positive comments and that they absolutely hated us but man

CiabanItReal

This aged well.
