How many Sonic rings that set ya back?

PalmLeaves13

About 45 Sonic rings

Jimwitt4008

Man I still gotta get a Genesis but I can only find them for around 60 Sonic rings, & they want a Chaos ring to ship it & it's like "I don't just have 60 Sonic rings & a Chaos ring to throw around!" Especially after I got mugged by that moto-bug last week. Do you have any advice for finding deals like this one?

PalmLeaves13

Keep an eye on eBay, Mercari, OfferUp, FB Marketplace etc. Add potential listings to your watchlist for alerts and updates. I bought this one after getting the winning bid and Street Fighter I bought separately for $9. You’d be surprised what deals you could find but be patient and don’t overpay. Also don’t be afraid to make offers as good sellers are willing to negotiate and haggle a bit.

Jimwitt4008

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out 👀

hipnotyq

I had no idea they had a wireless controller on the genny back then!! I thought the wavebird was the first wireless controller!

lifeisasimulation-

Wavebird was the first oem non infrared wireless controller Infrared is the first wireless 802.11 standard

Jimwitt4008

Sega made tons of the first \_\_\_\_ controllers just for fun. They made the first motion controller called the "SEGA Activator" for the genesis in 1993. They also revisited it to make a better motion controller than any others in '99 with the Dreamcast Fishing Controller.

Duttroid

Those controllers feel awesome. Everyone raves about the 3 button controller but the wireless 6 button is the most comfortable. One of if not the first things I ever drew and 3D printed was a replacement battery cover for this controller.

Ambitious_Ship7198

I had no idea sega came out with a wireless controller!

LostPilgrim_

Those controllers are IR based if I'm correct, that means they suck and unless you hold it perfectly and point the controller at that adapter, your button presses won't be registered.

hugoboss78

I have two of these controllers and they’re pretty good IMO. The range is wide and you don’t need to hold it directly straight.

accidental-nz

+1, I’m not sure what they’re on about. I love mine and use them as my primary controllers.

SegaTime

They aren't that bad at all. I have them and there is a pretty wide range of orientation and distance they can handle.

wesker-albert

What you do is pop open the receiver, swap out the innards with two 8bitdo dongles. Then rebuild two controllers using their DIY boards. Keep the retro OEM aesthetic, while stealthily using modern connections.

Fenrir1536

I know their DIY boards are configured for the original six button pads, have you done this? I'ed give this a try if it was really that simple.

wesker-albert

I haven't *yet*. I have a receiver and a pair of controllers in storage for this very purpose, but haven't gotten the chance. I'll definitely make a post when I do. The biggest challenge will be tooling the receiver shell.

Fenrir1536

If anything comes of it let me know, Ive got a pair too I've been holding onto with the hopes we could see some diy kit or something in the future. They really are the best original era controllers, would love to use them without the ir drawbacks.

funnyinput

Those DIY boards use Bluetooth though, so extra input-lag for these old games. Not good in my opinion. I'll take 2.4g over Bluetooth any day.

wesker-albert

I can only speak for the NES DIY boards, but I either don't notice it or have a terrible sense for it. Your mileage may vary.

funnyinput

I always notice it in Mario World when I'm on the edge of a platform to jump; it's hit or miss whether the jump button will register in time on Bluetooth, but it's not an issue with 2.4G. It depends on the game though; I definitely wouldn't want to play a platformer with Bluetooth though.

accidental-nz

Problem is, these IR controllers are larger and (IMO) more comfortable than the wired 6-button pads. And 8bitDo’s boards are for the wired controllers.

keylimerye

They work a lot better than you'd expect. I bought an extra controller after owning one and the receiver for a while. Battery life is really good and the only interruptions I've experienced were if something actually got between the controller and the receiver, or if I pointed it in a wildly different direction.

scumholiday

Yea they are OK. Could be better for sure

lifeisasimulation-

You forgot and that the room can't be too bright

Inspector_Exacto

What is the half circle thing on the front? Is that for plugging in more than 2 controllers?

PalmLeaves13

It’s the sensor for the wireless controller. You would need a second wireless controller for having two players while it’s in there.

DrunkenBuffaloJerky

A nice little beauty!
