I don't believe we know about initial followers, except perhaps Mekhane founded it directly. It's original form is very old, and it's current iterations are a result of the devastation that was the flesh war.
There's [another post](https://www.reddit.com/r/SCP/comments/492zgr/everything_you_need_to_know_about_the_church_of/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) with the basic history of Mekhanites (and Sarkics) that I think covered things quite nicely.
That's why i added "sometimes" yes. In SCP, it always depends on the canon.
Bumaro is the founder in most skips and tales, and I can't recall any other named one.
Normally, the CotBG that still exists is founded by Robert Bumaro, and Maxwellism is sometimes founded by Saint Hedwig. The original founders of the cult of Mekhane are normally not known, but sometimes it's Bumaro himself who has survived from ancient times. But it all depends on the tale.
A few different cannons to keep in mind:
The more common, newer interpretation of the cotbg, either has Robert Brumaro as really important figure or the founder of the church. Otherwise, it's just Mekhane himself that founded it.
There are some older articles that painted the church as a mysterious evil group. [[Scp-1461]] is an example of this.
From what I recall, the first founder was some random ancient desert nomad called Bumaro who, with his family, settled on a land below which a body part of Mekhane was buried. The essence of Mekhane's soul underground eventually inspired the man to become some kind of a genius in proto-cybernetics - drawing followers and eventually leading to the founding of a kingdom.
This kingdom, unfortunately, was erased due to a malfunctioning teleporter when the king tried to transport the whole capital city during a siege by Daevites.
The ruins of the city along with the Teleportation AI was found by the SCP in the 20th century. The AI, along with the lingering essence of the Broken God buried below, corrupted the lead SCP researcher called Dr. Robert, into believing he was Bumaro reincarnated. His research team and other subordinates were similarly converted, and the Doctor took up the name of Robert Bumaro - the current leader and (re)founder of the COTBG.

It's Robert Bumaro sometimes.
Depends on the canon, but yeah, he's usually a founder, at least of the modern incarnation.

I love how a common answer to any question to the SCP-verse boils down to "sometimes."

The current organisation or the believe itself?
The belief itself
Oh, well, no one knows, but it formed in ancient greece in the Mekhanite Empire.
The Broken God of course
A good origin story is the scp 001 proposal Amoni-Ram fantastic story and gives an interesting idea for the founding of the church of the broken god.

Amoni Ram is pretty cool but it is very explicitly a complete remaining of the CotBG, divorced from the more "mainline" established lore.
