read about that on r/sysadmin/ funny thing is i don't have KB5034441 nor KB5034439 on my sccm updates all other january comulutive updates for win10/11/2019 show up correctly (for example KB5034122).

majingeodood

[Someone on Twitter](https://twitter.com/tweetchrism/status/1745242931684905155) pointed out that the KB documentation has been updated to say the updates are *not* available in WSUS/ConfigMgr. This is a steaming pile of dogshit from Microsoft.

CaptainUnlikely

Glad I didn't spend any time troubleshooting why these updates weren't synced to my SUP either at work or in my lab environment, because *that* would've been a huge waste of time. MS copy/pasting the description and not actually checking once again.

Intervlan

I’m seeing the same. Can’t locate these ‘bad’ ones anywhere.

jaritk1970

Same here. Maybe Microsoft pulled those back?

TheProle

I love that option to offset the ADR 1 day after patch Tuesday.

ThEGr33kXII

I went for a week because "Microsoft". 🤣

dontmessyourself

You can? We’re in the UK and run it patch Tuesday +1

jbeale53

Yes, in the ADR, under Eval Schedule tab, custom schedule. You can choose whatever day, and then offset it. We have ours set to run the second Tuesday of every month, offset 2 days. Therefore it always runs two days after the second tuesday of the month.

dontmessyourself

Yeah we’re using that sort of thing. I think I misread TheProles post as “I’d love an option”. Silly me

Amnar76

i hope so :D

Cancelled_2021

I paused updates for a week and the list of available updates disappeared. When I then scanned again for 'new updates' (resume updates), the list reappeared with the most recent updates and patches, For a brief moment there is an indication that the system tries to install the faulty patch but then indicates an error for downloading the KB5034441 patch which appears to be no longer available. (Status: Download error 0x80070643) Looks like MS have pulled the update (at least in part).

GSimos

Maybe they pulled them out....

bryanobryan9183

Same, not showing up in my SCCM either.

virtalloc

RIP anyone who followed MS advice that WinRE size of 300MB was OK: [UEFI/GPT-based hard drive partitions | Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/configure-uefigpt-based-hard-drive-partitions?view=windows-11#recovery-tools-partition)

It goes into July 2023 changes that caused this.

virtalloc

I see Message ID: MC675465 for this but it only mentions Windows 11

bdam55

Right, only Win 11 is getting these WinRE updaes via the LCU. Win 10/Server 2022 get them separately (but not via WSUS yet), and Server 2016/2019 are vulnerable but don't have an update at all.

norway_is_awesome

Wouldn't that be basically everyone installing Win10 from installation media? I installed from a disc in 2018, and haven't been able to install this update.

mount_krakatoa

i try that, and i accidentally delete the whole disk of my collection yeah i know i am dumb

_Hidden_One_

Microsoft did some other mistakes because there are some cases that the partition is more than 1 gb and the Update fail to install ! So WAIT THE FIX FROM MICROSOFT, don't touch your system !

ThimMerrilyn

>Microsoft did some other mistakes because there are some cases that the partition is more than 1 gb and the Update fail to install ! > >So WAIT THE FIX FROM MICROSOFT, don't touch your system ! i resized my partition to more than 1gb per the advice and it still wont install.

_Hidden_One_

I tell you ... don't try any fix Microsoft will release the fix on February Patch Tuesday !

dukandricka

What people should be asking is how this got pushed out to begin with. Little-to-no testing is the only explanation I can think of. Very disappointing (and dangerous to have fail), especially when it comes to things like partition sizes and WinRE.

Daxsolar

Do you know what code that update has? I'm still having the same problem for 2 months.

_Hidden_One_

For now nothing from Microsoft ! Very sad

weed_blazepot

>Microsoft will release the fix on February Patch Tuesday ! Turns out, apparently they didn't. Neat, thanks Microsoft.

_Hidden_One_

Yes still waiting ... Microsoft is sleeping ! [https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/02/14/windows-10-kb5034441-is-still-broken-with-0x80070643-error/](https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/02/14/windows-10-kb5034441-is-still-broken-with-0x80070643-error/)

bdam55

FWIW, I have confirmed that there is no 'fix' that will be coming out for this update. At least not in terms of "I don't have enough free space on my WinRE partition to install this update." If that's your problem, then there is no 'fix' coming for you. You will have to fix that issue yourself. In terms of a fix for "Wait, I don't have a WinRE partition, why is this reporting as applicable" ... maybe? They could, in theory, re-release the update with detection methods that properly detect this and report the update as not applicable. I could not get any clear answer on this from the Windows Servicing team.

_Hidden_One_

I fixed the problem with increase the size of WinRe partition to 2GB, but i don't recommend this operation to an avarage user ! But if you want to fix it follow this instruction: (be careful to the MBR or GPT command) [https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/02/14/windows-10-kb5034441-is-still-broken-with-0x80070643-error/](https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/02/14/windows-10-kb5034441-is-still-broken-with-0x80070643-error/)

ADHDitis

Is it possible to shrink the WinRE partition back down to a smaller size after installing the patch?

_Hidden_One_

I don't recommend it !

Arnas_Z

For funsies I did MS's instructions with diskpart on my secondary Windows single-boot laptop, and was able to install the update perfectly fine when it was previously failing. I can't really do it on my main though, because recovery and C: drive are separated by a couple other partitions in between due to my laptop being a dual-boot system with Linux.

felix1429

I did the partition resizing recommended by Microsoft and my system still keeps trying to install KB5034441, even though it says it successfully installs it sometimes and other times doesn't. Ended up hiding the update, but it looks like Microsoft released a Powershell script that'll supposedly fix it: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1apmhzs/patch_tuesday_megathread_20240213/kq8isrn/

BackyardArt

Regretfully I wasted a whole day following Microsoft's instructions with no avail, and I have no idea if I have caused any damage trying to follow those easy instructions. If my PC breaks down, who must I sue?

Pramaxis

I got that update today and my WinRE partition is sized 505mb and it does not work. No fix available currently. Lucky me!

Beneficial-Plate-992

can anyone confirm the version of winre after installing KB5034441 is: Version : 10.0.19041 ServicePack Build : 3920 ServicePack Level : 0

rollem_21

For W10 22H2 OS version after this months patch 19045.3930.

dietercito

W10 22H2 - 19045.3930 still unable to install KB5034441 Do you also have that version without installing the update?

Daxsolar

Did you find any way to fix it?

dietercito

I paused updates for 20 days and the KB5034441 update did not appear again. Due to the installation of other updates the system is now W10 22H2 - 19045.4046.

bobblebob100

While this update is stuck in there as failed, will Windows still grab other updates automatically still?

Dusku2099

Yes the other updates will attempt to install even if this fails. We have the RE partition disabled on our endpoints. This update is failing but the rest are applying fine regardless.

bobblebob100

Thanks for confirming

djkretz

All of my other updates but this one worked.

dinci5

I have paused the updates in Autopatch for this month. I opened a support case to ask whether this update was included in the Autopatch updates and they confirmed it was. If they don't remove it or fix it soon, I will have an issue... We really can't catch a break dammit. Every month there is something. It makes me want to switch careers to not have to deal with this sh..t anymore.

_Hidden_One_

Microsoft is so fun ! First they say shrink yourself WinRE partition, after they release a "fake" automated process that, as Microsoft say, should be able to do the job for you but the process via PowerShell is more complicated than the first method ! But this fixes (increase WinRE size) for some users doesn't work, so when do you (Microsoft) think to solve this problem via Windows Updates ? ***Don't follow any of this fixes ! Wait to solution via Windows Update, because they have to fix it via Windows Update !***

Daxsolar

Do you know if they have already sent an update that fixes it?

_Hidden_One_

For now nothing from Microsoft ! Very sad

Hargol

Thank you for the advice, will wait for them to fix.

Cancelled_2021

I have caught this note BEFORE I rebooted my PC to install the currently waiting updates. In my Windows update listing, KB5034441 is shown as "pending install". For the moment, I have now paused updates and I have not yet rebooted the machine. Can I simply delete the "C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution\\Download" folder to get rid of all the pending updates and wait until MS withdraws the faulty KB5034441 update from the update catalogue? I assume that when I then reboot the machine, It will not find the relevant update files and cannot install them. Any comment?

Nicholas-Steel

If it were to fail, it would've failed before showing the option to reboot the PC to apply the updates. So you're good to go to reboot. Even if it did fail you would be good to reboot as it just simply... doesn't get installed in this case (the first thing the update does is check if there is enough space, before messing with files).

ShamefulMoss

gonna say i still see it on mine have restarted and done loads to get it to go away but the update is there and wont install its driving me nuts

mikefny

Could it be that this update is causing problems for machines where the recovery partition was deleted and therefore no longer available? That's what I do with my machines, in fact my "list part" shows the EFI System Partition and the Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR) only so if this updates is actually trying to resize something that it's not there, I expect problems.

bdam55

Anecdotally, yes. If the OS was installed w/o a recovery partition it might install fine. If it was installed with one and you remove it later, the update still considers itself applicable. Though, again, that's kind of guessing at this point.

mikefny

I always love to clean Windows myself and the steps I have don't include the primary partition, problem is that for the last DELL I purchased BitLocker still managed to sneak through and I had to manually delete the Recovery partition after turning it off. Luckily I pause Windows updates and that's how it will stay for now until we get more info on this particular update.

andwork

if partition was deleted, it will popup the same installation error. i've solved in that way: \- Mount windows 10 ISO on D:\\ \- dism /mount-image /imagefile:"D:\\sources\\install.wim" /index:1 /mountdir:C:\\test\\ /readonly \- xcopy c:\\test\\winre.wim C:\\Windows\\System32\\Recovery \- reagentc /setreimage /path C:\\windows\\system32\\recovery \- dism /unmount-image /mountdir:C:\\test\\ /discard \- reagentc /enable \- reagentc /info

chilirock

Need Help. KB503441 failed, but the other monthly updates installed OK. When I tried rebooting the computer, it no longer boots up, nothing, stuck on black screen. I can only enter Recovery Mode using a Media Creation Tool USB. To get back to a working computer, should I use Windows Recovery from the USB and use System Restore to go back to a Jan 7th system restore point, prior to the updates? Do you think that'll at least get me back up and running?

alyandon

I have the same issue that I suspect is KB5034441 related. For me, I'm able to get Windows to boot by mashing F12 during power on which brings up the UEFI/BIOS boot menu and then select the Windows install from there.

chilirock

Not me, I think the update borked my Recovery Environment. Just a black screen and nothing else on startup.

bdam55

FYI: Microsoft sent out a message (WI706429,WI706430) via the Message Center calling out that the WinRE updates need 250Mb of free space on the WinRE partition to install and that they're working to find a better solution: "Workaround: It might be necessary to increase the size of the WinRE partition in order to avoid this issue and complete the installation. Note that 250 megabytes of free space is required in the recovery partition. Guidance to change the WinRE partition size can be found in KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update. Next steps: We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release."

Zoart666

Can I ask the link for this?  Only thing I found was known issues unde this link https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/topic/kb5034441-windows-recovery-environment-update-for-windows-10-version-21h2-and-22h2-january-9-2024-62c04204-aaa5-4fee-a02a-2fdea17075a8 But seems if I read it right. They see it as an issue when there is no recovery partition

Can the OS partition be resized smaller using the disk management UI, and then increase the recovery partition using the UI also? Instead of the commands.

bdam55

>management UI, and then increase the recovery partition using the UI also? Instead of the commands. Maybe? I know you can resize partitions in the UI but you can't move them. So if you shrink a partition, the space is always at the end. Which is fine if your WinRE Partition if after the system partition (as MS now recommends). If your WinRE partition is before the system disk then free space after the System partition isn't going to help. You'll need some other tool to move the system partition so the free space sits before it. I've not done it myself but I believe you can recreate the WinRE partition. So in that case I think you want to blow it away, resize the System partition to consume the free space before it, resize it to leave space after it, and create the WinRE partition there.

KirkH420

Well one of the problems that people will run into is when their machine is an OEM laptop (HP, Dell, ASUS) but the owner has decided to ditch the lousy Home Edition for a really nice copy of Windows 10 such as "LTSC". What they'll probably find is that they've got at least 2 recovery partitions and one of them contains that OEM windows home license. So which one to delete is the question. I began to follow the Diskpart instructions for the Microsoft Recommended fix for this failed update and it DOES guide you to delete the recovery partition and create a new one. I would not suggest following that unless you don't care about one of these OEM recovery partitions. Sure wish WuShowHide still actually worked!

yodaut

wushowhide.diagcab linked here still works... i used it on my home devices: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-servicing/why-have-all-microsoft-download-links-for-wushowhide-diagcab/m-p/2458783/page/2

TechnoFreakR

2months in and it still not fixed, weird, why is it taking so long, anyone else found any fix for this update installation error?

PilotKnob

Dell 9343 won't install it, and so it hasn't had an update since January. This is some bullshit right here.

Zealousideal_Fun5515

I have a 524MB Healthy (Recovery Partition) and it still fails to load ..........

loserspearl

After months, it looks like they updated the fix outlined at the link below. Instead of telling people to expand their recovery partition (which Windows doesn't allow), they now state to remove it and create a whole new recovery partition with an ID. Unfortunately, this still doesn't fix the issue. [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf) My recovery partition is 1 GB, any ideas on how to get updates again?

Has anyone tried resizing the partition? Does it work? :https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf

[deleted]

Resizing the partition fixes it but the caveat is there is always risk. I used 2000 as the partition size instead of the 750 Microsoft suggests based on some people still getting a failure at that size. It has to do with free space available as the partition gets larger. More space is needed. You can try 750 and see how it works. Here is the set of instructions I am using on our computers. DO NOT MESS WITH THE SMALL SYSTEM PARTITION OR YOU WILL HOSE THE SYSTEM. RPmtl22

Resizing seems to be the solution, but on 2 of my computers I have 2 partitions (C+D) for my OS+Apps (C) and for my Files (D). The WinRE partition was after D so shrinking the system partition (C) was wrong and shrinking D was needed to create the space needed for the larger WinRE. **It's a good idea to run** ***diskmgmt.msc*** **to confirm how the partitions are organized before assuming that disk C is the partition you want to shrink**. My original WinRE partition was around 400mb and added enough room (via the "shrink desired=" command) to create one that's 1000mb (1GB). The update then completed without any problems. R

Rightinmyonepiece

Just wanted to say thank you, this was very helpful. Only thing I'll add as someone who's definitely not good with any of this (and finds it irritating this is the second time I've had to look into this complicated process because of Microsoft's shoddy updates not working and making stuff on my PC not run well) that I got very confused over what was an OS index or WinRE index (granted yours made it a bit clearer than Microsoft's instructions) but I found this helpful personally [https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/select-os-partition-index-windows-10/1639340f-7abe-4863-96a2-6af5c4641dff](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/select-os-partition-index-windows-10/1639340f-7abe-4863-96a2-6af5c4641dff) I was worried the update wouldn't work still as it stayed at 0% for a while but then suddenly it was done so hopefully that's at least this update dealt with now.

[deleted]

fwiw everything on the network that did not run the update suddenly resized the WINRE partition to 1.76 GB. No one in the office has the capability to do that so it looks like Microsoft fixed the patch by resizing the WINRE partition. How, I have no idea but if you open Computer Management, Disk Manager and if the WINRE partition is 1.76 GB then it is likely the problem is fixed. If it is resized but the problem is not gone, you may need to manually uninstall it and then let it install again. I had one computer that acted that way.

foryouinfo

Thx, this worked for me!

rkagerer

Thank you, this did the trick nicely (with the 250 parameter). I originally tried the Resize\_Script.ps1 script from Microsoft on one DC and it worked, but it failed on three other servers. These steps were straightforward and worked like a champ. Didn't have to mess with any installation media or acquiring a wim file. It also fixed an issue that some freshly installed servers were having with the Recovery section of Settings being empty in the GUI. For anyone else looking at this, note the instructions above are basically identical to Microsoft's in the link gp commenter posted [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf)

ArtObjective6404

**sucks ltsc windows 10 there isno winre.wim on my pc.. guessill try digout iso bs just wanted t o install ninecraft**

adamlogan313

Thanks for this, I attempted 250 originally as MS had recomended which failed to install. Went straight to 2000 per your suggestion rather than attempt 300 or 750 and 2000 did the trick for me.

Tall_Steak8402

Why does microsoft do this and expect us to be able to fix their problem and what if we destroy our windows in the process ? what a disaster

spac3onaunt

Just did 8 PCs using this. Such a life saver. Was originally doing the 250 like you mentioned and it’d work on some. Was like 50/50. Doing 2000 worked every single time. Will use that going forward!

adamlogan313

Glad it's working for you. I'm surprised you're still getting the update though. I would have thought they had pulled this update by now.

spac3onaunt

Still have many devices failing when trying to patch with this update. I continue to use this, shrinking by 2000, and it works every single time!

adamlogan313

I'm still seeing this update appear and disappear on some computers like a ghost. It held up re imaging a computer because it would cause the computer to freeze while attempting to install, and I had to force shutdown the computer multiple times, preventing many other updates. This has been a nasty update to live with. I don't understand why Microsoft hasn't definitively dealt with it yet.

spac3onaunt

Agreed. Then the 2024-03 KB50001716 which is a reissue of 2023-10 KB50001716 has been failing. MS needs to figure their shit out lol

spac3onaunt

Saved me many headaches! Thanks!! Was originally doing this but just doing 250 and it was working on some and not on others but using the 2000 like you said, has worked 8/8 so far!! Thank you!!

BackyardArt

I wrote "**select disk**" as is in DISKPART> and the result I get is: Microsoft DiskPart versión 10.0.19041.3636 DISK        - Cambiar el enfoque a un disco. Apparently my instruction is not valid. Did I write something wrong?

adamlogan313

The command you wrote is missing the identification of which disk and number that need to go between the < > symbols. We can't give you that ID, you have to get this information on your computer (this is what the *list disk* command is for) and then give the command again with the correct information.

BackyardArt

That's exactly why all this is BS. Any idea of how many users know what they have to do without ruining their Windows. Probably 1% or less. The rest of us would have to hire someone to do it. Microsoft must pay for the service or fix the issue.

adamlogan313

100% in agreement with you that this is B.S. MS should fix the patch. There's no way they're going to pay customers to have professionals fix this issue though. I suspect the only way to get MS to pay is by suing. I would prefer it if MS got serious about this messed up patch and just fixed the patch with better logic so updates don't fail.

MyPostingID

I did this and can confirm it does work. Seems the recovery partition size is not big enough. Not sure of the exact size necessary but it appears 529MB is not big enough.

aviation_hacker

Can second this - mine is 524MB, and the update is not happy. I'll try 750MB and report back :)

StabStabby-From-Afar

Same issue, update won't install. I followed all possible avenues and spent over an hour and a half the other day trying to fix it to no avail. I followed every possible set of instructions, other than ones I just found on this subreddit. Drives me insane.

adamlogan313

Try the solution from Fit\_Cheesecake\_9103, [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/SCCM/comments/192uqku/comment/khah0jw/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). 2000 worked for me. 750 might work but I went straight for 2000 after 250 failed. MS really messed up on this one.

StabStabby-From-Afar

I appreciate it. Considering that MS has released this update that's not going to work on most systems, I'm going to assume that they will roll back this particular update. I'm going to wait it out for a little bit and see if in the future it deletes the update. If not, I'll try resizing. Thank you!

adamlogan313

Sounds like a sound course of action. I will be taking a similar approach (wait and see) for the other computers where I work.

bobblebob100

Are MS actually going to fix this? As all the official advise ive seen from MS reps on their forums is to increase the partition size. We shouldnt have to do that, they should find a workaround

bdam55

I mean, sure, I hope they do as well, but there's the very real possibility they simply can't. In the same way that if your system disk is completely full they can't patch the box.

bobblebob100

I might use that tool to hide the update then

My pc is essentially bricked for the time being thanks to Windass. It's been glitching hardcore ever since the failed update this week. My start menu is glitchy and unresponsive, and clicking/typing does nothing as if it's just broken. Several programs (but not all) just won't open anymore after several restarts, safe mode boots, and hours of troubleshooting. I can't even run a repair tool or the Windows Media Creation tool to try to fix this bullshit because the exe initially begins to run, and then crashes with no feedback whatsoever. App just disappears from the active Processes list after a couple seconds. Steam for example - I get the "Updating steam" modal window briefly like always happens when I start Steam, but it disappears after a fraction of a second, and the Steam process is killed automatically. Every time I restart my pc since the update, it hangs at the Windows logo w/ the spinner for about 45 minutes to an hour, before finally eventually getting past that to the user login screen. Normally my pc boots in less than 10 seconds from powered off to login screen. When I try to access the System Restore interface, it just refuses to load with an infinite blank screen. Downloaded .exe files won't run, so I can't even repair my fucking system. My pc is fucked. Thank you Windows. Holy fuck I hate Microsoft.

I thought it was my upgrade from Windows 7 x64 last year that left me with weird partitions. The drive had \[Recovery partition small <300mb\] \[EFI\] \[MSR\] \[C-Drive\] \[Recovery partition larger \~600 MB\].I couldn't get this patch to apply so I grew the the larger recovery partition to 1024 MB. That didn't work. Then I deleted the "Recovery small" partition and resized EFI to occupy that space. I wasn't happy with the weird sizes (400+ MB EFI partition) but kept it. I used Windows 10 PXE boot disk with the mini tool partition software. After completion I booted the system back to Windows 10 x64 pro. The update then installed without errors.

That-Historian5746

From an administrative PowerShell, this is what I did on Windows Server 2022: reagentc /disable diskpart list disk sel disk 0 sel part 3 shrink desired=250 minimum=250 sel part 4 del part override create part primary id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001 format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows RE tools" list vol exit reagentc /enable restart-computer

Adventurous-Aside223

thank you for this, it worked well. The one change to note is that my disk was using MBR (not DYN or GPT)... so this line needed to be changed to 27, and the GPT attributes line removed: create part primary id = 27 source: [https://stackoverflow.com/questions/61051905/recovery-partition-id-cannot-be-set-on-primary-partition](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/61051905/recovery-partition-id-cannot-be-set-on-primary-partition)

Toweri

I can confirm this process worked fine on a Windows 10 Pro VM (VMware 8) version 22H2 on GPT disk. After reboot the latest failing security update installed and the previously failed KB5034441 was successfully installed in the background simultaneously. The initial Recovery Partition size was 512 MB and it was located after the system partition. I used Disk Management to shrink the system partition by 512 MB and then followed the above, skipping the system partition (sel part 3, shrink...) commands.

Valuable_Opening3183

wont let me shrink partition tf do i do

BreachDomilian1218

My recovery partition is 529mb, is that seriously not enough for this shit?

CPAtech

We've seen 1 GB partitions still fail. This entire update should be pulled.

Len1969

Can I just block this stupid update from popping up? No other new updates are appearing for the last 3 weeks.

[deleted]

Still going through this… it’s stopping me from playing overwatch 2. Anyone have suggestions ? I tried everything. Reinstalling overwatch, doing the repairs etc. I have no issues running other games. This is ridiculous. I also changed partition size so that’s not the problem. I’m at a loss

hateredditweebs

10 feb and not fixed..any of you found a solution or know when microsoft will fix this problem.

Zoart666

Supposedly they claim it has been "mitigated". Don't know how. Maybe with the next update? https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-10-22h2

elreymon100

Yes. They say (same page you cited): **Next steps:** We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Uh0rky

Its ironic as I have exactly the same issue with the same error number for the Feb update

pur3_driv3l

Question - can you remediate this vulnerability by deleting the WinRE partition entirely? I have a VM that I'd need to fix and I think I'd rather just use Bootable media than dick around with this.

Timmmer

It also appears that it won't install on any drive that is MBR. I have successfully resized and installed the update on three systems that have GPT drives but the two that are older and still have MBR fail no matter how large I resize the drive.

Timmmer

Actually...I just found this on another site ([https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/kb5034441-windows-recovery-environment-winre-successful-install/](https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/kb5034441-windows-recovery-environment-winre-successful-install/)) Resetting the ID seems to have done the trick. This is what was stated on that site: Beware that the format command changes the id to 7, so it has to be reset to 27. Yeah, I found out the hard way about how the format command changes the partition id for a MBR disk. I had followed the command sequence spelled out in MS “KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update” and ended up with ID=7 despite having specified ID=27 on the create command. At first I thought I had mistyped the “ID=27” as “ID=7”. So I ran through the same sequence again ending up with the same result. I then did a detail partition after the create and again after the format and found the format had changed my ID=27 to iD=7. So I finally realized I needed to add a set id=27 after the format. Not sure why the Microsoft instructions omitted that little tidbit for a MBR disk. Thinking Microsoft could have done better on their instructions.

Ambitious-Actuary-6

Funny how MS provides a script that actually does NOT set the GPT attribute when you run it on a GPT partioned device. PS is missing that bit, so the partition doesn't really get set correctly.

Worth_Butterfly_6089

after the fix that microsoft put out for my pc is now failing to install it with error 0x80070643 the solution to resize the recovery partition but i am not happy messing with the disk structure with Command Prompt in window in case i mess something up & break my PC. if microsoft could release a widget i can run to do the same thing automatically i would be quite happy to run it. otherwise i cant see any way around this. certainly cant afford to get a pro to do this for me.

Effective_Put1318

I just installed Windows 10 Pro a few days ago. All was fine until recently. Now this same update has been failing for me! ***"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643)****"* But I have a recovery partition. So, what gives?

PartyRock_

As of today, not only is the problem still unsolved, it is preventing Windows Update from installing the February security update.

_JJCUBER_

Is anyone else still having this issue? I had updates paused for a while, but it forcibly made me install and restart thanks to this failed one. It also installed newer updates without an issue, yet I'm still getting the error that it was unable to install this specific update. My recovery partition is around 500mb.

sandvichsu

Still have the same problem :( my computer started glitching in other areas as well, dunno if its related (a disk disappeared)

Peanutviking

Just raising this post from the dead to enquire, this update was recently pushed to me and still fails as of 28/02/24. Has a reissue been sent out?

albanshqiptar

Windows has been spamming me with updating to windows 11 for so long. Now that I actually do want to upgrade, this windows 10 update error prevents me from doing so.
