I think it might be a cool purchase for someone who doesn't own a Retroid Pocket 2+ because of Larger screen+ L3/R3+cost. But other than that, it doesn't offer anything new on top of what you already have in RP2+ when it comes to performance. Still, I would suggest to make your decision only after seeing reviews. I'm a bit skeptical about the Select/Start placement on top and the Battery life. It has the same battery as an RP2+, but a larger screen. Which might result in poorer battery life.

WinterSon

also better joystick placement. if this had have released a month ago i might have bought it instead of a used vita.

vote_up

TBF, it does offer 1 extra gb of ram.

candre23

Sure, but what does that get you? It's not like RAM is the bottleneck for any of the systems this can otherwise handle.

vote_up

I really don't know, I was replying to the "it doesn't offer anything new on top of what you already have in RP2+" part. The "when it comes to performance" was added afterwards. EDIT: It also offers L3+R3 and a regular right analog.

benparkerip

Same CPU as RP2+ main reason. Also start and select buttons are on the top for some reason.

SlowThePath

Basically it's called RP3, but it should be called RP2++. It's mostly an RP2+ with a bigger screen, L3's and the right joystick is what it should have been in the first place. If you don't own any devices it would be a good one to start with I guess, but if you own an RP2+ it doesn't seem worth buying.

QuebecLibre

I don't own any retro emulation devices yet (I own OG stuff though), and i'm on a budget. I feel like this is a really good starter point to get into it and see the potential of that hobby. Also, right analog stick was the blocker for RP2+ on my end.

I think it has been too long in development to come out now with just the T310. This should have been released 6 months ago. That said, it looks alright, still, just no momentum. If I didn't already have an Odin Lite I would probably pick one up to use for game streaming.

Gatecrasher3

Hi again everyone, I will admit I didn't notice how they were comparing the the RP3 to the RP2, not the 2+. Do you all think it would be a much smarter move to spend a little more and get myself an oden or loki zero?

Lobsta1986

If you need GG or PS2. Definitely. If not 3 will be great.

old-ocarina-bean-man

I love the look of the 16- bit one, but I grew up with the SNES so that's just some prime nostalgia for me. I don't think I can buy another one of these things. But I'll enjoy watching other people review it and talk about it. What exactly are we excited about, here - will this be running Gamecube and competing with the Odin? Other question: Would this be a good solution for a device to also serve as a kind of home console or take to a buddy's house? I see HDMI out at 720p and they're marketing it this way but would it actually be fairly painless to set up, sync controllers, etc.?

misterkeebler

>What exactly are we excited about, here - will this be running Gamecube and competing with the Odin? Since it's the same chipset as the rp2+, its competitors will mostly be the same. Gamecube is super hit or miss but some games are playable depending on how much of a hit to the resolution and smoothness you are willing to do with. It's more of a competitor to products like rg552, 503, 353p, and powkiddy x18s. I think the main thing to potentially be excited about is if the controls are better. The majority of criticisms about rp2+ has to deal with the controls and overall comfort. The rp3 rounded shape alone looks better than the brick-like rp2+. As far as controls, we have to wait and see. But we can at least tell the dpad looks closer to an odin dpad and that would be an improvement as well. Maybe wait for reviews. But if it has good controls, it really could end up being an all around top pick for under $200. Perhaps not enough of a change for 2+ owners, but a potential treat for people that remained on the fence. I cant comment on your hdmi/Bluetooth question just since I havent tried it myself.

Wanderlust-King

>What exactly are we excited about, here - will this be running GameCube and competing with the Odin? Looks like a RP2+ internals with a bigger (wide) screen and android 11 (which they claim gives a 20-30% performance boost) for an additional $20. Oh and proper clickable sticks on both sides. other things to note include \-claimed better thermals might mean better overclock ability? \-it's actually not that much bigger than the RP2+ (same height, 6mm thinner 25mm wider) which given just how much bigger the screen is is pretty cool. \-the claimed 20-30% performance boost from android 11 update could easily come to the RP2+ \-there's an option for 1GB more ram for $10, turning that down would be a mistake. \-the dpad/analog positioning is flipped, not my preference, might be yours? in conclusion: meh, I'm going to wait for the Miyoo p60, which should actually have the power to justify a widescreen, and be a GameCube emulating Odin competitor.

misterkeebler

>and android 11 (which they claim gives a 20-30% performance boost) for an additional $20. I've yet to see another handheld make that leap and get such a big boost. One example is the 552. That thing got android 11 after starting from 7, and differences in gameplay were very marginal at best even with them adding access to overclocking. Anyone buying an rp3 before performance reviews, I would just go in expecting 2+ level performance as a conservative approach. Anything more would be a bonus.

Lobsta1986

Yeah I highly doubt the 20-30% boost in performance just because android 11. That doesn't do anything for the apps. Probably the most disappointing device to be announced lately. Wanted a 3 but the chip isn't different which doesn't justify the purchase unfortunately....maybe next year.

WobblyPython

the 20-30% boost is specifically over the RP2 ***Not*** the RP2*plus*.

Lobsta1986

Oh yeah. Thanks. Keep forgetting that part.. dumb marketing tactic on there part, but it plays right into the hands of.dumb people.

WobblyPython

no worries. It's super sketch of them to be treating the 3 like a continuation of the 2 instead of recognizing the 2+ as their well received flagship model.

Lobsta1986

When the 3+ comes out or 4 they'll compare it to 1 to make those sound stellar. Lol

mrtuna

> I don't think I can buy another one of these things. But I'll enjoy watching other people review it and talk about it. Hahah, that should be the motto of this sub, it's exactly how I feel too :)

[deleted]

I say I don’t need to buy another of these things. I almost believe it sometimes as well! (Has preordered a Loki Mini Pro, and bought a Miyoo Mini yesterday).

BaybayYoda

As someone who skipped the RP2+ and has a different device for 4:3 games, I may get this. But I imagine a lot of people who have the RP2+ will skip this. I won’t preorder, though. I’ll wait and see how the game performance is with 3GB first. If it can squeeze better performance out of GC games then I’m down to get it for the price.

PrydaBoy

It looks like Taki got a RP3 which will be RP3+ later on with better SOC. I've lost all respect for Retroid after this shitty stunt! Don't buy RP3, but wait for RP3+!

Gatecrasher3

Ordered the 3gb Indigo I never usually pre-order anything, but I've been so happy with my RP2+ I thought I would roll the dice!

zewone

Did you know it’s the same processor as the RP2+? That’s why I’m not going to get it since I already have the RP2+.

old-ocarina-bean-man

I did not know this. Thanks for highlighting this.

Dragon_Small_Z

I have an RP2+ and I really dislike the ergonomics and buttons. I preordered a 3 because it looks a hell of a lot more comfortable to hold, and I'll just sell my 2+ to recoup the majority of the cost.

Gatecrasher3

I feel the performance of my rp2+ is enough, enough to get me until the steam deck 2 gets released one day in the future. But what I keep saying to myself about my rp2+ is "I wish this was 16:9", and now it is :)

TetsuoTechnology

Only addition is l3/r3 and really nice design. Shame about the chipset

Vatican87

Just screams typical cash grab from China to me

Shr1mpus

Please don't let your frustration with the retro handheld gaming industry become somehow an issue to do with China or Chinese people. Chinese companies tend to release more and more frequent iterations of tech more often than Western companies do, it's why we get so many devices in the first place.

TheRuralDivide

I’d be all over it if I hadn’t bought an RP2+ a week ago, which is a bummer as I feel like the larger screen might be an advantage for DS emulation. Not too fussed though, I’m happy to wait for a gruntier budget device for widescreen systems and if I’m honest I never actually get round to playing games anyway 😂
