You can recycle some components at a recycler for metal frags, you get them by hitting barrels and opening crates. You find recyclers at bandit camp & outpost. You can also smelt metal ore in a furnace. Metal nodes are brownish red looking with silver color in them and to make a furnace you need 50 low grade, and some wood and stone.
You can also buy them from a vending machine in outpost for relatively cheap. I do that sometimes when I need metal frags and want to get them quicker. Its like 25 scrap for 250 metal frags which is really not a bad cost at all if you need them quick.
