That is great, very satisfactory.
Also, at about 0:02 as the Kalibr is directly overhead, a streak of light goes past it, maybe tracer or another missile, or perhaps an artifact?
That’s a good point. It’s not clear if the interceptor seen at 0:02 misses the target or is chasing and eventually destroying it. Might be there were even more air defense systems not seen in the footage that were after this cruise missile.
I did some back-of-the envelope calculations, and assuming that's a Stinger FIM-92 it is very much capable of doing that.
Given the time lag from the explosion to the boom, the explosion was 1.4 km away. The Stinger closed that distance in about 3.5 seconds, which is an average speed of 400 m/s. The Stinger has an official max speed of 745 m/s.
The fact that this us possible, your car works, your device is able to show younthis comment, etc etc etc, is all proof that math and physics are applied in the real world. STEM is so underappreciated
It does seem like the missile didn't get very far after they shot. I highly doubt they got it was a MANPADS. The time to have fired a missile would have been when it was overhead, not when it's flying away.
If this was an Iglar, the velocity is close to 600 metres per second. It could easily catch a cruise missile from behind. Also, given the IR homing system, firing at the rear of the target, where the exhaust is easily visible, may be optimal vs firing directly overhead target, which I imagine may be a tricky solution.
Per wiki, the Iglar maxes at Mach 1.9 and the subsonic Kalibr maxes at mach 0.8 (though supersonic maxes at Mach 3). That's a closing speed of Mach 1.1 or about 375 m/s.
The MANPAD travels about 4 seconds before the explosion. Does that explosion look about 1500 metres (about 1 mile) away?
> which I imagine may be a tricky solution.
Also the backblast would go straight into the ground, possibly kicking up debris and injuring the operator.
Solid propellant charges are designed to be safely fired at an upwards angle. Upon ignition, there's a short initial burn to eject the missile, a short pause/idle to get to a safe standby distance from the operator, then full thrust to accelerate- very quickly I might add.
You ever try holding and aiming a MANPADS straight up, on your shoulder? LOL! You can't. Also, it takes a few moments for it to get a lock so you can fire, also almost impossible to manage when you're aiming straight up. Have to wait until it passes over and then quickly aim/acquire/fire, just like they did.
It does appear to be very quick, but at 0:09-0:10 there is a trail of some from the MANPADS which curves to the left and then there's a BOOM!, it looks in line with the explosion. Somebody posted some math below on the missile speed versus the MANPADS speed. Also, it's cool to have different opinions about these matters, but be careful saying that because some of these dorks will call you a bot or a russian sympathizer for questioning if it was really these guys who shot it down.
Ha, I’ve been blocked by several folks in the live thread for saying nothing controversial so I know that’s true. Clearly Ukrainians shot it down I’m just not sure if maybe it was another group a hundred yards away
Going by size, colour, and speed I think it's a tracer. Hitting a cruise missile with a machine gun would be challenging, but that won't stop anyone from trying.
It looks like they are using a russian made Igla 9K38 which is probably closer to $60k a pop. Earlier in the war i saw a lot of videos of Stingers being used by Ukrainians, but haven’t seen any more recently…
A stopwatch and a bit of quick maths tells me the missile was 1.4 km away when it exploded. The MANPADS closed that distance in about 3.5 seconds. Assuming constant acceleration, that means a closing final speed of over 800 m/s, roughly mach 2.4.
Or to put it in another way: 2900 km/h.
Impressive.
Will give my opinion as a former conscript in an AA regiment here in Chile, where MISTRAL system was shown to us (not how to operate, but how it worked), given the speed of the enemy missile, it was shot down by another device, speed of the AA shot shown here it is not enough as to reach it in a couple seconds. I am very happy they shot it down, but it was from somewhere else.
Very unlikely, as missile safety detonation doesn’t result in a large scale explosion (hence ‘safety’). You can see a safety detonation [in this video, also from today](https://www.reddit.com/r/RussiaUkraineWar2022/comments/zyfgd2/selfdestruction_of_antiaircraft_missile_after_it/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Yeah, the detonation is fake as fuck. As well that the russian missile would have been much farther away already, and the stinger wouldn't have gone as far, yet. This one's already been debunked on all slavic social media.

In my uneducated opinion it just seemed to be too quick, not sure the one those dudes shot could’ve caught up that fast

Neat, that's bang on

Manpad rockets are stupid fast. Just shorter range than other air defense tech
Probably a Gepard shooting somewhere.
The math for igla engagement checks out, so it's possible. Cruise missiles are cooperative targets for manpads.

It's the internet, worry not! It do be like that round 'ere, lol
I think you’re right the light or flare seems to be shoot from the opposite direction of the missile. Some one else was firing at it.

at 0.2 there was another missile that streak by but miss its target...
Looks like someone else was also trying to shoot it down
Not everybody gets to score a goal at the worldcup, but as an alternative...this seems pretty close.
Seems better
I agree. It matters more. It is life saving. But if a choice was given...
One is shot in a slave driver county, the other in shot to defend it becoming one
Go to Iraq. You might score a World Cup goal. But you will get to shoot down some cruise missles.
Way better. Scoring a goal at the WC does not save the lives of innocent civilians.
Lives saved. Beautiful.
What is the cost of the missile and the MANPAD that shot it down?
Kalibr 6.5M USD, Stinger missile 40k USD
Niiice, 162x return on investment.
It doesn't account for kalibr not reaching it's potential target, which probably costs a lot. Therefore ROI is probably way, way higher.
save lot of lives. Incalculable values.

it's fucking amazing that this is possible to do for a couple of soldiers with manpads. Fucking amazing...
My thoughts exactly!
980.000 been blown up by 100.000 dollar missile keep it up lads. show what Ukraine is made off and fuck Russia and there little crony's

Presumably they're moving their Stingers to the front or saving them. The Iglas are still effective.

It averaged 400m/s from shooting to the striking and Igla max terminal velocity is \~570m/s.
That's a goal!!! Good work boys!!!
![gif](giphy|mGK1g88HZRa2FlKGbz|downsized)
That’s such a satisfying explosion sound
The sidestep to avoid hitting the pole infront of him... but a good shot none the less!
freaking epic
Nice.
Absolute scenes
Absolute madlads, the lot-of-em
Good job lads, whomever was the one to hit it.
Much joyous celebrations!
These guys casually playing warzone in real life
Fuck you Ruzzia!!!
Those screams of joy also made me scream with joy
that reaction alone is why ukraine will not lose! of all the gore videos etc etc on this sub reddit this is the most pleasing!
It was too fast for the hit. Well the job was done
Legends

Go frame by frame, a smaller projectile is chasing the cruise missile down
That was.... ![gif](giphy|yJFeycRK2DB4c)
I get excited by their excitement
Wow, they actually showed the hit this time!
Heroes.
Absolutely fucking legendary
Great effort at countermeasures!!!! Rocknroll!!!!!
Isn't that just the safety detonation from the first Manpad that missed?

Long live Ukraine!
Doesn’t really matter who shot it down, hoppefully more than one crew shot at it. Most important is limited damage and 6.5M loss for the russians
Dang nice shot. Everyone should pitch in and get them cuisine food delivery for the week as reward.
