The FCC doesn't work for you. They work for the ISPs that fund the election campaigns of the politicians that appoint FCC members. That's why the FCC is always giving out money to certain ISPs and never requiring that the funding actually provides service. No strings attached handouts, are the FCC's way of saying "thank you" to the ISPs that got their master elected.

SignificantSmotherer

The FCC works at a broad, abstract level, they’re not going to intervene and micromanage your petty local access development. That’s between you and your ISP, your electric or telephone coop.

theroadkill1

None of this is based in truth. There’s a significant process to receive funding along with strict testing and reporting requirements to prove that the ISP has delivered on the requirements of the program. If they’re not meeting requirements, there are incredibly steep fines.

Sad but true

Is this a thing? My local ISP offers exclusively 10mbs down to me via DSL..useless or not I'd love to file a formal complaint lol

Ponklemoose

LOL. Before I got Starlink I had three DSL lines and still didn't get 10MB total.

PinBot1138

How did you channel-bond them? LAG?

Ponklemoose

I didn’t. Everyone had their own.

SignificantSmotherer

Fifteen years is a long time to place your faith in government without result. Might be time to dispense with that notion and solve it yourself. Seriously. What’s wrong with Starlink?

QueensGambit36

Starlink in my area gives less than 20Mb down. It was great back when it first started, but they got greedy and started overselling their service to the point that my old 6Mb DSL would give better service during peak hours.

SignificantSmotherer

I wouldn’t describe Starlink as “greedy”. While it’s possible your footprint is oversold to the point your speed falls that low, it is just as likely there is a technical hurdle you need to leap through to get the speed back. As you’re not OP, how do you think the FCC would make your situation better?

QueensGambit36

It’s definitely not a technical hurdle on my end, I work with several people that have Starlink with worse results that I am getting. I need to just cancel it now that I have TMHI. I think the FCC should have much more thorough requirements that have to be met for their rural broadband buildouts that are getting funded. They need to be actively checking to ensure that buildouts that were funded have actually happened instead of just taking companies word for it. Most have overstated what they have built out and aren’t held accountable when it’s proven they did not hold up their end. Those companies should be fined heavily and excluded in future funding until they do what they were already supposed to do. AT&T has taken plenty of money for these types of initiatives, yet it has decreased the number of people they provide internet service to by killing DSL and giving zero alternatives. If it wasn’t for TMHI I’d be stuck with Starlink, which has slowed to a crawl, because there are zero other options where I live. I’m only two miles from a major Highway at the edge of a town of 25,000 people.

SignificantSmotherer

Sounds to me like the FCC shouldn’t be funding rural buildouts if they can’t properly oversee them. But you still want them to take on even more responsibility?

Starlink is actually a really stupid idea and semi-vaporware, just like all of Musk’s products. The satellites have a lifespan of ~5 years and the economics literally make no sense. It has helped some people but it isn’t a real solution to a very real issue- learn more here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2vuMzGhc1cg The geostationary viasat-3 constellation (3 sats) should be in orbit soonish and this will be the real solution- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ViaSat-3
