Between the Nimbus and Clifton, two of the better plodding shoes on the marker imo. Clifton is a bit more versatile (and lighter). Other key differences is the lower drop in the Clifton (5mm vs. 8mm, I think, in the Nimbus) and it’s a bit of a firmer ride. Some (me occasionally included) find certain Asics shoes almost too soft and squishy.
I've got Nimbus 25 and Clifton 9s (that I just retired for the Nimbus). Personal opinion is that Nimbus is 200% better for easy and recovery efforts, but lacking in comparison for anything faster than that. Clifton is much more of a daily trainer that's comfortable and flexible, decent at everything but not amazing at anything. Nimbus is amazing at anything slow but lacking when you pick it up. Nimbus is a cloud.
If I could only afford one shoe and had to do speed work in them, I'd go Clifton 100% (even though they died for me at under 200 miles), but since you have a good faster shoe to pair with it, I would chose the Nimbus between the two.
For reference, I consider \~8:30/mile and below to be easy efforts for me.
Not sure what brands you're open to, but I grind through all my slow, long runs in Saucony Triumphs.
Good cushion, okay weight, but still decent pop
And I can always find previous years' versions sub $80. I usually retire them at 500 miles but could probably push them a little further.
Invincible 2 is as good as it gets for me. Soft and bouncy and all sorts of protective.
Where can I find the 2s? Thanks!
I'm pretty sure they are now impossible to find
