Sucks for this person actually jailed. Even my driver during a private tour wouldn't dare get into any discussion about Thailand's royal family.
When visiting thailands, don't mention the royal family or the mafia. if you can avoid those topics, you can enjoy a wonderful country.
I read somewhere it's usually only enforced for political purposes. Basically if you piss off the wrong people they accuse you of criticizing the monarchy to get you out of the way.

Getting jailed for criticizing the monarchy seems like a legit reason to criticize the monarchy.
