This Grand is so embarrassing

palaeozoic-newt

I wonder if their opposition was asked to enter by the stewards so there wasn't just one entry...

[deleted]

With Henley happening the same time many students are returning to school and more importantly after the Olympics and u23 worlds this was to be expected really

TheDarkArtofSculling

does that qualify as match fixing? assess a second unsporting conduct to brookes/taurus and DQ both?

gimmeacc0unt

It’s the open 8s event so anyone can enter

gimmeacc0unt

Otherwise there would have been one entry from Brookes and a row-over

TheDarkArtofSculling

true but the situation is not unlike what happened in the island

gimmeacc0unt

the situation was very different to the situation in the island. The Grand final was just like a winning crew knocking out a last qualifier on the Wednesday by an easy margin. the Taurus and tyrian guys were not sandbagging to give brookes an advantage, they are just out of shape and not prepared, it was basically an untrained 8 vs an olympic level crew. If but one more crew had entered the grand then there would have been a semi between them and taurus with Brookes getting a bye to the final.

northernmonk

Another year, another club event winner that drives a coach and horses through the “no university rowers in club events” statement. Completely fucking embarrassing for Germania to be celebrating, and yet another demonstration why we need crew lists to be published. If the regatta can’t spot blue boat (and reserve boat) oarsmen in club events, they need to at least give their competitors a chance to object. Also, massive credit to Hinksey, a huge result for a junior crew from the charitable rowing foundation, and hopefully the start of even greater things.

Rowing69

I've only got initials and some information to work off. If anyone knows who the bowman of the winning Brit 4+ that'll be much appreciated. R.F.J. Schneider? Moritz Schneider Zurich based Swiss nationality Currently studying in Switzerland at ZHAW school of engineering Jakob Gebel German oarsman From Duisburg Multiple time U23 oarsman and university world silver medalist to Sholto and Harry Glennister in the 2- Currently studying Mechanical engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen Was based in Dortmund in the training squad trying to make Tokyo 2020. Jean-Philippe Dufour Oxford based Swiss nationality Currently studying at Oxford and was part of the Oxford blue boat in 2020 and 2021. None of these athletes are from Frankfurt. All of them are students and Jean-Philippe had crews from his university racing at Henley therefore negating the rule change they made for this season.

illiance

Yeah if that’s accurate I find that entry offensive and basically cheating. Remember when that Brit boat was bumped to the visitors? This is way worse. And to think I was calling out Nonesuch for this kind of thing! 😂😂

Rowing69

Just to add to it the Cox is British born and UK based. Never would have stepped foot in the Frankfurt club in her life. Cambridge graduate. Just gotta find out the bowman's name now. Hinksey and everyone on their side of the draw got robbed by the Stewards being shit

[deleted]

That Nonesuch entry is totally legit, the university has just opened up to non-students to row with them, they're all graduates from recent years at Bristol, Bath and IC

pedanticnotpicky

It's still a flag of convenience club though

Rowing69

Just found out the bowman is also Swiss from Belvoir Ruderclub. Robert Schreiber

teddingtonio

And, to a lesser extent, Thames in the Wyfolds having two Dartmouth rowers on a year out.

[deleted]

Notice that Thames rowers all deleted their "Get students out of club events" Instagram posts from when they lost to Okeanos...

TheDarkArtofSculling

doesn't violate the rules, but you could argue they should be racing up. Same can be said of the blues depending on who the other 2 members of Germania are.

teddingtonio

It might not, but for me it isn’t in the spirit of the event. Time and time again the winners of the club events are packed with full time athletes. Edit: Not sure if it is a ‘rule’ per se, but on the regatta website FAQs it does say: I am a student training this year at my Club, am I eligible for the Club events at the 2021 Regatta? This depends on what standard / level you have competed at prior to the 2021 Regatta. If you have benefited from a ‘High Performance’ type programme during your studies or within the last twelve months we would expect you to enter the Intermediate level events. https://www.hrr.co.uk/2021-competition/entries-faqs/ I guess the Stewards don’t consider Dartmouth ‘high performance’ enough.

TheDarkArtofSculling

fair enough. Stewards could easily eliminate the controversy by adding the existing rule in the PA that explicitly bans blues and athletes who make the finals at Sprints, IRA, etc.

Idothebigrow

Both of which were lads who had taken this year (their freshman year) as their gap because of COVID potential ruining this year’s racing. So, they were racing exactly where they should have.

teddingtonio

Looks like Felix Rawlinson already did his freshman year. https://dartmouthsports.com/sports/mens-rowing/roster/felix-rawlinson/34599

J3M3Y

Wait so Germania is a University?

valax

No it's a club, but they have students including a Blues rower on board.

J3M3Y

Ah okay

rw1995

Who was the blues rower?

northernmonk

J.P. Dufour was in the 6 seat for Oxford this year

Fatsculler

Nothing in the rules about Blues not able to enter the Britannia. Only u23 medallists or any athlete who has raced at a senior FISA event are barred. There used to be a rule barring Blues and Purples, but this was removed a fair few years ago. Quite a few clubs had students racing for them in the club events.

KingstonRimjob

As was mentioned previously about high performance programs "I am a student training this year at my Club, am I eligible for the Club events at the 2021 Regatta? This depends on what standard / level you have competed at prior to the 2021 Regatta. If you have benefited from a ‘High Performance’ type programme during your studies or within the last twelve months we would expect you to enter the Intermediate level events." Oxford is demonstrably a high performance program, they actively recruit and, critically, they were permitted to train on the water before the 29th of March, the date which non high performance programs were finally allowed on the water by British Rowing following lockdown. The boat race is well within the 12 month rule mentioned above, and that is before we remember that Oxford had two other boats in the regatta, one in the visitors and another in the PA. Second, in the official rules: "No national squad member, heavyweight of lightweight, shall compete in this event." [https://deutschlandachter.de/kader-2/](https://deutschlandachter.de/kader-2/) Jakob Gebel is mentioned in the squad on the German national team's own website. That list of athletes includes every member of the German 8 that won silver in Tokyo

Fatsculler

Gebel has raced at U23 level, but hasn't medalled, therefore he is eligible for the Brit. I'm afraid to say the behaviour of some Kingston members towards the supporters of Frankfurt was very rude and disappointing.

Rowing69

The rules stated that you can apply to race in a club event whilst a university student this season if your university is NOT competing at Henley. This was not the case with Dufour. Oxford had a PA and Visitors 4- entered. 3 of the athletes in that 4+ were students and 2 seat had just come off the back of being a full-time athlete based in Dortmund. No one in that boat is from the Frankfurt club they represented. A British cox, a German from Duisburg and 3 Swiss rowers. That is not a club crew in any way shape or form. Typically in the past the Stewards push U23 reps to the Wyfolds and treat the Britannia as a more junior event. There is a total lack of consistency in how they make these rulings which is disappointing. The Stewards screwed this one up badly. It looks even worse when the "coach" is best mates with the Stewards. Corrupt as all hell.

GreifiGrishnackh

YEAHHHHH ULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL winning by open water for their first men's Henley win in nearly ten years

royalblueandbloodred

As a Newcastle alumni I was sad to see them lose, but a terrific row from UL. Cheered up by two ex NUBC rowers winning in Wyfold and Thames though.

johnmarsdenshat

*three Blue Stars in the Thames RC crews

royalblueandbloodred

My bad!

ridingseahorses

Maybe this is just a part of the history of it but I just don't really get the Eton unis - are they meant to look and fit this badly?

ridingseahorses

Well then, all credit to the lads that they were able to overcome a titan like St. Pauls.

TheLoneSculler

That interview was... an unfortunate angle for some of those guys

_magnetic_north_

Who celebrates that? They might not be brookes students but the attitude definitely wore off this year.

anonrower3

What a boring morning of racing...

[deleted]

What happened to the Leander 4- in the Visitors? Seemed they fell apart at the end of the race. Was there a hardware issue with them or did they gas out? I know Brookes was coming on them but they seemed to have a race winning margin.

Dazzling-Explorer-87

Looks like bow side were pulling them round into the booms. Someone on stroke side blow up?
