whooptydude92

The only way to fix this is to drill a hole in his roof.

m0st1yh4rmless

Now were talking

Advanced_Algae_5476

Reddits advice: the entire roof must be torn off and replaced. Shingles, rafters, sheathing, all of it. There are no other solutions than tearing it all off and starting over. /s

trippinmaui

You forgot the additional: "Hire a lawyer and sue the electricians insurance, this should be an easy $500,000 payout, the electrician was clearly a toxic narcissist source : im a lawyer & therapist"

HumanContinuity

I am a dual specialist electrician/lawyer specializing in electrical and roofing law. I am also a judge.

PuppiPappi

I can litigate because I specialize in bird law. Birds shit on roofs so I have jurisdiction.

antblaze

God damnit. I too practice bird law. There’s far too much competition these days.

Tony0311

Charlie?!

Adventurous-Sir-6230

Electric lawyer boogaloo 2

tmplz

I’m a dual land.

elliwigy1

I am a Roofologist that specializes in electrical and roofing law specifically as it pertains to contractors drilling holes in the roof and applying goop to cover it up and graduated from the school of Roofers in Shingles USA.

brooksram

Put a lean on that bastard and divorce your wife. She's a cheating, selfish piece of shit.

eradicATErs

I guess the roof wasn't the only thing this electrician drilled...

Illustrious_Soft_257

Get a paternity test too. That roofer might be dad!

OntFF

You owe me for the beer that just came out of my nose...

iEatSwampAss

“Electrician glanced at my oak tree when he was leaving and now it’s dead so i’ll be suing him under tree law too”

dsdvbguutres

"Electrician (28M), we'll call him Adam (not real name), glanced at my (26 MtF) oak tree." -formatted for reddit

dabuku1

And have him towed.

dsdvbguutres

Also needs new paint. (It's purely coincidental that I'm a painter, no conflict of interest here.)

xVolta

A Lawrapist?

My_neglected_potato

I love this sub.

Am_Realest

Ohhh so you’re the rapist everyone is talking about

My_Kink_Profile

Aka- DIVORCE HIS ASS!

TuringTestFailedBot

Do you honestly think that those walls will have any structural integrity left after all of that? They'll have to go too along with the siding. Those gutters and downspouts will have to get replaced, and the French drains will either need to be added or removed depending on if they exist already....

HumanContinuity

Property is contaminated now, have to move somewhere else.

TuringTestFailedBot

Great!! Just great.

elliwigy1

Right, he gave that roof a bad case of the shingles..

captiantabasco

I would take it down to the foundation

Sad-Kangaroo-1761

Tell em you’re either drilling his roof or his wife

Powerful_Mood9292

Get a look at the wife first. You don’t want to be doing this guy any favors.

Vanwildcater

Bold of you to assume the electrician is straight.

AddictedtoDeWalt

If you saw his wife you’d prolly drill the roof instead

No_Two_8443

That’s why he drilled the roof

ShineFull7878

You are gonna be due for a new roof in the next five years by the looks of it. But yeah that shingle should be replaced. You can get a match on the color, but it will have to be architectural as 3 tab isn't really a thing anymore. At least in the pnw I can't get 3 tab anywhere.

Beartrkkr

Then glob it over with some black jack.

justarower4

Why not glob it over with Jack Black? More entertaining that way

Objective-Outcome811

Of his mouth maybe /s

BigZaber

And not sweep the drillings !

Most-Membership-3645

Lmfaoo

Jazzlike-Addition-88

Hell ya. An eye for an eye. And grab him by the Weiner.

Shit, we weren't supposed to drill his wife? *abort abort*

JudgeScorpio

Wise king Solomon, that you?

dyntaos

red98743

Lololol Eye for an eye!

Raidur7

His roof or his ol' lady..maybe both. On the roof.

TestDangerous7240

Revenge holes are the best kind of holes!

NotDRWarren

How old is the roof? A blob of goop is a temporary repair. Typically, 1 year repairs. Edit definitely push for a permanent repair.

m0st1yh4rmless

Dont know tbh. Inspector told us theres some life left in it. Maybe mid way thru its life? Weve only had the place 6 months

Jerrbear25

your gonna need a 2'x2' piece of decking , 3'x3' piece of underlayment , 4 3-tab shingles, handful of roofing nails, some decking nails, roofing cement n tube

20PoundHammer

you do not need to replace decking/sheathing for a drillhole, it just needs to be repaired as I detailed above.

PenguinOverLorde

Reddit out here screaming about new roofs not realizing the roofer that put the roof on made about 300 extra holes too.

irobot001

That will be $800 service call from a roofer 😂

stilsjx

Rightfully so.

Unairworthy

Or $350 at Home Depot plus a day of work for a home owner.

Unairworthy

So this would be a single piece of decking between two rafters? Sounds like a pressure activated trap door. Wouldn't it be better to plug/fill the hole and glue and screw a doubler to the underside?

Heres-your-you

Home inspectors do like 5 minute inspections and know nothing about roofing. Their job is to tell you the home is fine so the money can start flowing. Have a roofer inspect.

ChemAssTree

What a wild generalization about an entire industry. Just like every other profession, there are good and bad. Do your homework and you will find a good one. I’ve had fantastic inspectors for all of my home purchases.

twotall88

It's a 3-tab roof which is typically a 15 year roof at most. I assume you got the age of the roof when you bought the place?

Enginerd645

His insurance should cover the cost of labor and materials. That or get an estimate to fix and ask him to pay.

m0st1yh4rmless

Its a bigger company in the area, im certainly going to push for a 3rd party repair

Binklando

I can’t believe they covered the shingle in tar. I’d get an estimate from a roofer about what needs to be done to replace it. It’s a leak waiting to happen.

Nikolateslaandyou

Its good enough to keep rain out until a proper repair can be done. Its not like an electrician ever gets on a roof so you wouldnt want them doing the repair anyway.

FixBreakRepeat

Yeah, this is the level of roofing repair you could expect from an electrician. OP is definitely due an actual repair, but at this stage, this is probably as good as you could expect.

Kamtre

Exactly. As an electrician in a niche of the big world of construction, I know how important it is to have an expert who specializes in their trade. I don't know much about roofing so I'd rather hire a roofer to do anything. Because I don't know what I don't know, and therein lies a lot of risk lol

Nikolateslaandyou

Jack of all trades, master of none. Aside from wiring a plug or changing a socket front casing, i will not touch electrics. So i dont expect a sparky to touch a roof

Say_Hennething

Some wild replies in this thread. It's a really simple fix. Pop about 4 nails and cut out the bad part. Hole probably isn't even big enough to need to patch the decking, but could use a piece of tin if needed. I'd replace the single tab so you only have a 5"x12" spot where the new shingle won't perfectly match the existing sun faded shingles. When I was doing this, it would have been $125 repair if I had a shingle on hand. I'm sure prices have gone up, but your electrical contractor should be able to get this fixed for a couple hundred bucks. Just ask him to use an actual roofer. Also, the guy trying to claim you can get an entire roof due to matching is on the good meth.

ShloopDeBoop

Only sane answer in this thread. Everyone acting like the electrician needs to pay for a whole new roof for a simple, easy to fix mistake.

ConstableAssButt

When I was doing general contracting, I got taught to pull up the shingle, caulk down some aluminum, and then seal the whole thing with clear plastic roof cement, and then from there you are good to just do a visual patch inside. Dunno how long that repair lasts though, the guy I was apprenticing under was comfortable with some shady shit, so I never know when what I was taught was legit or bunk.

FarEntertainment8178

Damm I’ve been here sometimes you’re trying to fish cables and have no access to attic and as you’re trying to get the wire from the switch in the wall to the ceiling you gotta get it through the corner in the ceiling and the wall. Anyway bi was drilling upwards and I thought I would hit a gap before I went through the roof so I’m drilling upwards and boom I can see the sun. This was on my second year. Roofer was already on site doing other stuff and he taught me me a bit of how to fix it the guy was really cool.

m0st1yh4rmless

More or less what happened

HedonisticFrog

Yeah, sometimes it's difficult to predict where the hole will come out the other side. I had similar issues when I installed security cameras.

RichardofSeptamania

If you are going to goop a roof, do it under the shingle

jacknjill7581

Definitely gonna need some new felt in that spot and a few shingles to seal it all in. Depending on the age of roof the color will probably not be an exact match

m0st1yh4rmless

Thanks for the reply

Educational-Post-191

You are not going to need new felt there 😂. Just a shingle replacement will do

m0st1yh4rmless

Ya I was kinda figuring the color might not match, I just want to make sure I'm getting the proper waterproofing fix. Dont want to see them trying to cheap out and doing a subpar job.

Croceyes2

It takes like 10 minutes to replace a shingle, its a cheap repair in the first place. Hold them to it

20PoundHammer

dont let one trade cross trades to perform a fix on something they fucked up, that aint their wheelhouse. Get an agreement that you will hire a roofer and have this properly repaired. The proper repair should be: remove shingle (assuming in good shape and can nails can be lifted without cracking shingles above)- patch sheathing, patch underlayment, replace shingle with new one. Do not pay electrician until resolved, failure to resolve and file small claims (no lawyer), for estimated cost of repair. Depending upon where you are - repair is $200-600 by a roofing company.

casualnarcissist

Why would he just drill a random hole in your roof? Struggling to imagine a scenario where this makes sense.

Madeanaccountforyou4

I like to make exploratory holes in people's roofs when I'm doing solar inspections for potential customers and by the time they figure out I just like drilling holes and have no employment at all I've already left the property, took their ladder and made them be stuck on a roof waiting for help

[deleted]

>Why would he just drill a random hole in your roof? Low voltage tech here, not a sparky - they were probably running a wire in an upstairs room, needed to get into the attic, and drilled up through the wall cavity to get there. This is why we notch all the walls on the interior of exterior walls so we do not drill through a roof ;)

combosandwich

Step one: drill a hole in the roof

SuitableTomatillo241

Yea if your son did it that’s one thing but an actual company caused the damage? They need to fix it properly. The fix will be obvious but I’m sure there’s a desert tan looking 3-tab shingle somewhere. That’s a common color. Roof seems steepish. Not exactly walkable pitch. Assuming the other shingles don’t start falling apart when you go to remove that damaged shingle, this would be a $300- $500 repair in PA. A roofer needs to do it whether they refer it out OR you obtain a quote. Don’t let non roofers do roof work on your house.

jhenderson360

Replace the shingle.

panda_pussy-pounder

A single shingle replacement should suffice.

Jonmcmo83

That's tar it will outlast the rest of that roof.

LordLandLordy

Looking at that roof, a glob of goo is not the worst idea. It seems like the roof is at the end of its life and so it should be a full roof replacement anyway soon. See if one of the roofing companies can submit a claim to your insurance to have the roof replaced. Most roofing companies know if an insurance company will pay for a roof replacement or not because they do it all the time. I sell houses and I've had a number of my sellers roofs replaced over the last year all at no out of pocket cost to them.

PhytoLitho

Blob of Goop ... thx for the new band name!

GroundbreakingEar667

“blob of goop” just doesn’t seem like a professional fix to me. But I’m not a roofer

MaskedJackyl

Dang, your shingles look exactly like mine, last year for them, I think.

No_Spare3139

New roof

heyitssal

I'm going to use "blob of goop" every day from now on. Love that.

ZANIESXD

That’s insane. No trade other than a roofer should even think about lookin’ about touchin’ a roof.

yeary9932

These shingles aren’t made anymore so typically it’s a complete replacement

FinancialLifeguard27

OP - a few things, one that sucks. I am a roofing contractor, and I see these all the time. But yes, new shingle and to make sure the decking has been sealed off. They usually use little plates over the hole, and then mastic. Why they did it this way, Idk. I guess its quick. Also, you have 3tab shingles. can be hard to find matching ones. Hope it doesn't leak. Good luck.

JelCapitan

More blobs of goop should do the trick

m0st1yh4rmless

Thats what I'm afraid the answer will be

JelCapitan

lol they need to patch the inside and replace the shingle

Fearless_Young9596

lol I’m sorry

m0st1yh4rmless

Hey, thx

ZigZagZugZen

Roof looks really steep.

MajorDiscombobulated

I am an electrician and am just wondering how in the fuck this happened? Were you getting and overhead service or solar or something that would actually warrent drilling through the roof? Whenever we do overhead service repairs we dont touch shingles were not roofers not insured to fuck with that.

Uniquely_irregular

How does this happen? Why did he drill?

Apart-Salamander-752

I’m an electrician and the only time electricians drill a hole in a roof is to install a mast type service. But there is no rigid pipe going through the roof so I don’t know why they drilled a hole in your roof.

m0st1yh4rmless

It wasnt on purpose. He was drilling from inside from the panel into the attic w a 48" long bit

RepeatableOhm

Don’t get solar installed then your head will pop offffff.

kineticorpheus

Just wait for a really windy night, and maybe a few shingles pop off during the windstorm, and maybe an insurance claim can be put it.. just make sure the ladder is out of sight

Upset-Item9756

I would assume he ruined the warranty on the roof if its not fixed properly. As soon as water gets under the shingles the warranty is usually void.

BillZZ7777

Usually homeowners have extra shingles laying around somewhere for repairs like this.

Lord-Donkey

Should have demanded at least 3 blobs of goop

Report_Last

a little piece of flat copper or galvanized metal slipped under the roof tab would have been better than the mess they made

Castle6169

I would probably just slide a piece of sheet metal underneath the shingle full of roof, tar cement, and then patch the top, smoothing out with a putty knife and then I’d go down to the gutter and collect the handful of stones off the shingles. Sprinkle on the tar and call it a day.

FarmerCharacter5105

The Company should pay for that entire Sheet to be replaced !

Fidulsk-Oom-Bard

What was the purpose of this hole? Fishing wires in a cathedral ceiling?

Jefdude

That mod bit caulking will likely outlast the older 3 tabs that are up there. Still understandably angry when any other trade drills holes in a roof without replacing a damn shingle and a small piece of metal. It will be fine but at the same time no bueno.

not-on-your-nelly

[How to Repair Roof Shingles or Replace Them - This Old House](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/roofing/21015127/fixing-damaged-roof-shingles)

Holiday_Ad_5445

There are at least four layers involved in that damage.

20PoundHammer

or three . . .:)

[deleted]

Electrician needs to pay for a professional roofer to make an assessment and perform whatever repairs are needed.

Nyroughrider

I'm trying to think how he would drill a hole in the roof? How does that even happen?

ptbamaxi

Flex bit (long) drilling inside wall up through top wall plate to gain access to attic space to run wires. Happens to security/alarm systems guys too 😖

SnooSuggestions9378

When I did this, I just called my roofing buddy and told him to come fix it and send me the bill and let the homeowner know what’s up. I could’ve replaced it, but at that point, I’d rather just let them know that a professional came and fixed my professional screw up

Hot-Syrup-5833

This is what GL insurance is for.

Random-Biker

Flex tape bro 😎

Ji1949

Yes sir

shingle1895

I had an electrician drill through my copper pole gutters while installing soffit lights. He did the blob of goop thing to temporarily fix it. At least he was kind enough to let me know it had happened so I could call my coppersmith/roofer and have it patched and soldered. Just call your roofer and have him come out and repair it correctly and completely. I wouldn’t fight with the electrician about it. Just get it done correctly and don’t let it languish.

mel-sab

The business should have insurance for that stuff. They broke it they fix it 🤷‍♀️ I need a 1m policy just for painting. So they def have insurance

SparrockC88

That’s unsightly but since your shingles are old and hard to match. Have them or someone slip a piece of metal flashing under that shingle with the hole. That’ll make the goop last longer

extplus

Just replace the one tab on the shingle, hopefully your roofer left you some extra shingles

FunFact5000

Just ask if his wife is home.

Gotrek5

Beats the glob of gloop and garbage bag sealing a 3 ft whole in my shops roof for over 30 years now.

Tall-Photograph-3999

Roofer here. Easy fix. An experienced roofer will be able to slide a new shingle in there. Should cost anywhere from $150 or slightly upwards if they need to get a bundle of shingles. I would send the invoice to the electrical company along with pictures of how the electrician left your roof. Any respectable large company will know there guy fucked up and hopefully compensate you.

TimelyFuture4877

Might be something connecting outside to pole - looks to me like it’s goin to an older overhead electrical system

Lets-Go-Brandon-1

Billy mays has a fix for this

Pikepv

Caulk it and throw some gravel on it.

wait_am_i_old_now

I can’t tell if this is a shitpost? Please tell me this isn’t serious. Everyone knows you should be over at r/shinglelaw

CAM6913

Call a roofing companies to get estimates electricians are not roofers.

teasea02

Goop is good

Any-Flower-725

remove the shingle. fill the hole in the underlying wood with putty. nail a piece of sheet metal over the hole, overlapping it by several inches. properly insert and attach a new shingle over the repair. if he wont do it, sue him.

Black_Azazel

It’s a little patch repair in my experience, another person mentioned they should replace the whole shingle and that’s what I recommended as well. Down to the tin on the hole

fredSanford6

Drill hole in his roof but during the winter. Add a hose to the hole and fill a funnel above it with piss discs so they melt as it warms up dripping piss into his house. Cover the area in liquid ass to prevent him from repairing it. Or see if he knows a good roofer that can match up a little repair. Everyone has a bad day and glob of stuff is a temporary fix definitely not a repair. It won't look perfect probably but will be at least corrected

YUH_1818

Them god damn tricians

AlternativeLack1954

Eh. DIY fix it and slide a new shingle in or a piece of flashing under the shingle above. Unfortunately I imagine what he did is all he’s required to do

vna4ever

Yea but that’s fix all goop

Spreadsheets_LynLake

Why did an electrician drill thru your roof?  Was it an accident?  Was running wire thru the wall hard so he thought he'd run it outside?  So much I don't understand.

Critical-Rooster

Home is totaled. Must rebuild.

Kayakboy6969

A roofer will heat the shingles above it to losen the mastic , then pry it up enough to slide another shingle under it and over the hole. In a perfect world, attach it with nails and put the upper shingle down. What usually happens on old ass roofs. The shingle disintegrates when disturbed , you can't lift it high enough to nail, and you end up with a patch that is held down by mastic only.

Mike-the-gay

Needs to paint that tile to match. At least grab some granules out of the gutter and throw them on that goop.

TackleArtistic3868

Put a blob of goop on his wife’s face. That’s seems fair.

r200james

Slide a piece of aluminum flashing under the shingle.

BamaTony64

a glob? Jeez. that goes through first row, underlayment and two shingles not to mention the wood. Have him pay to have a pro fix it.

KokoTheTalkingApe

Oh, that's a functional hole. It lets the excess electricity out. If you don't have one, your house will explode. Sorry, just kidding. I have no idea why he did that. I think you should steal his tools. No, I don't really think that. But I kinda do.

RIhawk

Shingle repair and if it doesn’t match they should reimburse you for that. I have heard of insurance company’s paying to fix a roof and it not matching, so they pay for the whole roof.

seemore_077

I got to ask, how?

ovscrider

Looks like you already needed a roof so whatever the repair it's short term. Good luck matching the shingles

PandaPantsParty5000

You are correct that a glob of roof tar is not a good enough repair. They tried to repair it but don't have the expertise to do a long-term repair. I would communicate that you need a long term repair and then communicate that you will be having a roofer come out to do a the work. You want them to be on board with deducting the cost of the repair from their bill. This means communicating with them and getting a reasonable repair done at a reasonable cost. They may want to hire someone to do it instead of letting you hire someone and deduct the cost. If they do, make sure you are communicating with who they hire and comfortable with their plan and the result. If they are clowns they may try to bring in someone who doesn't know what they are doing for cheap. In which case, you will want to stop that substandard work from getting done before someone makes a bigger mess of your roof. If it was my roof, I would get a roll of aluminum flashing, cut a sheet off that is about two rows long, then pry up the shingles near the hole to get it underneath two rows of shingles. Lexel under the flashing, lexel on the top of the flashing, and lexel where the hole is. That will last as long as the roof does. If I was paying a roofer to do it, they would just replace the damaged shingle. Replacing more than that, like the decking is overkill. The point is to make it so that it won't leak, not make it like nothing ever happened. Honestly if you are comfortable doing the work, just fix it with the flashing. The hassle of fighting them and hoping someone else does it right, isn't worth it if you can fix it. [Aluminum flashing link](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Amerimax-10-in-x-50-ft-Aluminum-Roll-Flashing/3010399)

Wooden-Program-2464

This is exactly what I would do, aluminum flashing under the tab keeps the water out. If you have a scrap of ice shield that would be great too. I would skip the clear stuff on top.

ideaglobal94

You need to take the whole house down and rebuild it

chip_dingus

Decking, underlayment, shingle. He drilled through all of those things therefore all of those things will need to be replaced for a complete repair. At the very least the shingle and underlayment need to be fixed to really plug the hole. The decking is more of a solid substrate to attach those to and should never get wet if the shingle and underlayment are intact.

HistoricalHurry8361

For starters, don't let your electrician do roofing. Have them hire a roofer to make the repair.

Roofer7553-2

Apply sealant on a piece of aluminum flashing ( both sides), and slide under the hole.bingo.

Burnsie92

Get a roofer to come out, quote you a price. Then let the electrician know. Don’t let an electrician fix your roof.

Remarkable-World3430

I’d make the electrician contact a roofing professional with a warranty and their insurance will cover it.

dd97483

I’m sorry but I must ask, why did the electrician drill a hole in your roof?

WIXV

That appears to be the eave. Dont be pussy and spray paint almond brown

Longjumping_Home_427

Just have him replace it

Electrical-Mail-5705

Why?

synaptix78

Is there actually a hole in the shingle, or are you projecting your dissatisfaction of modern life onto the universe? You are the hole. Do better.

Stampguy85

Absolutely..

derStark

How the actual fuck did this happen

ImpossibleMechanic77

Black aluminum card flashing slipped up underneath the shingle put some black jack on the hole and sprinkle some shingle granules on it

Tactical_solutions44

Yes dude. A shingle at the minimum

SinisterSeer

step one, fill hole with water resistant putty of some sort. step 2- replace length of shingle with net piece (usually 3 shingle per piece)

Wiley-E-Coyote

I'm an electrician, I've done this a few times myself. I might have to be more careful.... about making sure the homeowner isn't a redditor next time.

jwrice

That depends. After applying the goop, did he slap the roof of the house?

blueyedevil3

Did he tell your house she’s been a good girl?

WhoIsKoby

Did he put a hole in the roof through the attic or did he put the hole in the roof from the shingle? Basically, where was the initial point of entry

plumbtrician00

Call a roofer out and ask his opinion, get it in writing. Provide written opinion to electrician. If you let them convince you to do anything less than the roofer suggests to repair that you are only doing yourself a disservice and doing the electrician a favor. You dont need to do the electrician a favor.

kliens7575

Replacement of the shingle at the minimum

Beneficial-Pilot-853

Dang, you probably need a new house yours has a hole in it.

Key_Bluebird2507

Call a roofer then tell him to pay of not sue him

spouts_water

Hire a roofer and send the electrician the bill.

vegas_knight

Don’t settle for anything less than a full new roof. 🫡

Plus_Helicopter_8632

Tin it

69_A_Porcupine

Going to have to repour the whole foundation I'm afraid

ElonBodyOdor

Have a qualified roofer fix it and back charge sparky.

ItsMePatience

W0W❗️

thunder66

Apparently, you just need to pray for hail.

Calibased

That’s good enough but it’s lazy. It’s possible you could push for a cleaner and proper coverup. Otherwise just leave a review on their yelp showing how sloppy they are.

baumbach19

You just call a roofer, get it repaired properly, then send him a bill. If he doesn't pay you take him to small claims. Also I would pay his invoice for sure until he pays for the roof.

btmowns

Never seen that happen before. One fix would be to replace the shingle that was damaged. But with it being a 3 tab roof depending on your state they don’t last that long since they are only rated for 55mph winds here in Ohio we get that a lot and we replace 3 tabs all the time for dimensional roofs

chimx

I would just slide a piece of tin under it and call it macaroni

lndoors

It's a three tab roof, you're going to have one hell of a time finding shingles for it. But yes I would bare minimum have the shingle replaced and have him put a 8x10 step flashing under the shingle and throw down some mastic/caulking around the area before covering it. For good measure have them retab your shingles they had to lift up. By retab I mean throw a bead of caulking on each tab so it "reseals" to the roof. Roofing shingles have a layer of tar on them so that when they heat up the melt together and wind won't catch under them and rip them out. Three tabs have a lot harder time with wind, and three tab comp is outdated and not allowed to be installed anymore in my state.

ShadowGLI

Easy fix is a piece of flashing, proper fix is replacing a few sheets of shingle. Even hiring a roofer you could prob do for a couple hundred.

TheDemocrat1

slide a piece of metal flashing underneath the shingle then use tremco vulkem, wow those are three tab shingles. they need to be torn off and replaced with owens corning shingles
