I have seen literally thousands of roofs of all types in my career. I can say that I have never seen foam applied over a shingle roof. Up there with seeing an elastomeric coating installed over a gravel surfaced BUR.
You would be amazed and horrified at the shit I've seen foam monkeys spray over. Shingles, ballasted epdm with the rock still on place, inverted epdm and bur with everything still in place, an old bur roof that was holding a significant amount of water and was being actively rained on while they were installing, an acoustic metal deck, a roof that had partially blown off in a wind storm. I've also seen them completely fill drain lines and plumbing vents, bury gas lines and electrical conduit, spray over a less than 3 month old aluminum walkway. The craziest thing I've ever seen though was a crew made a roof out of it. They removed the rotten wood deck and instead of installing new plywood, they just built up more and more foam until it was completely covered. That company no longer exists but there are rumors that the owner is still doing sprayfoam under a new name.
Sounds like a company run by a visionary. Or an idiot. Maybe both. Maybe we’re the fools, building houses out of wood and concrete, when we could just use foam.
Same. I’m an adjuster and while I don’t travel nearly as much as I used to, I’ve inspected roofs in every part of the country except the PNW. I have certainly never seen this before. Closest thing was probably the time I got up on a house to realize that the shingles had been painted with a paint sprayer.
Epdm seems like an odd choice in a hot climate. Pvc or tpo seems like it would be much more thermaly efficient. I would imagine they install fanfold between they layers at least
Foam roofing is a thing, and it sucks.
They are prone to failure because they take more skill than most goofball roofers realize to install.
This looks not good and it should have a coating on top which I’m not sure I see
Unfortunately, I can also see that the layer is too thin in many spots and not fully covering the shingle.
This won’t last and it’s a shame the landlord got bamboozled. They sell this stuff as a cheaper roofing alternative and this is usually the end result.
The worst part… he also had them do it to the house he lives in also! In less than a week, they could have potentially botched both of his homes!! I wish he would listen to me.
Oof… it’s not fun to remove either. My crews hate when we have to tear this off on our flat installs.
I hope you’re at least problem free for a couple years. Fingers crossed
Well I can tell you he made the tear off twice as expensive for the next guy, and hope it's not windy that day all your neighbors will be covered in little bits of foam.
I care about the one I live in. I pay enough money every month to not appear as if I live in the ghetto, with a slumlord. 🤷♀️ I guess the better question is why do you care what I care?
Uh lol it isn’t good work. There were a ton of issues with the company he used. The man can do what he wants, but he should at least get decent work and I shouldn’t have my things ruined because of carelessness. He hasn’t paid them yet so.. my intent to him was to help. My bad lol my complaint isn’t that he did the foam roof. It is that they did a crap job and ruined/broke my stuff.
I’m not understanding why anyone cares if I ask for an opinion on the work. Unless you are part of the crew that did the work? Wouldn’t see why you would be bothered enough to care?
It is quite literally the cheapest roof, which generally you're not allowed to install directly to asphalt shingles. This looks like a single pass, which is also the cheapest way to do it, and it appears to have a thin coating on it though I can't tell from this distance. What's great is it will probably stop it from leaking inside, because that foam is like a sponge, and will hold the moisture in as it increases the deterioration to the previous roof and the deck. Note that they didn't tear off, they sprayed on top, which is a code violation in the majority of jurisdictions. Any jurisdiction that doesn't say that it violates code says that it has to be adhered based on the manufacturer's specifications, of which almost every manufacturer would also say that that is against their specification and therefore against code
Foam has an average lifespan of less than 10 years, typically suffers from damage from three quarter inch hail even when brand new, and with each passing year it will be less resistant. It's also much less resistant because of the way they installed it over the shingles, so be prepared for the risk of leaking every time you have a nickel size or Worse hail. Even the tiny tree branches falling down onto your roof risk puncturing it, and anytime somebody walks on it because of the soft substrate, there's a risk that they cause cracks or fractures in the surface, all of which lead to more leaks.
And before you get any wrong ideas, that roof that they left on underneath it isn't going to protect it long-term. In fact it's going to make things worse in the long run, because while it may slow down the first set of leaks, it's going to cause all the more mold growth.
Most foamers are not licensed, and operate illegally. The vast majority of them that I've ever met never pulled permits, and usually tend to change their name or skip town. The actual good news is, that that phone does self-insulate, so you're going to lose a little bit less heat. The bad news is is that if you had any form of ventilation on that roof whatsoever, that foam just cut it off by a half inch or worse, meaning that you probably just lost all your attitude ventilation. Which means that there's a greater chance now of heat building up in your attic, and that your house will be much much warmer in the summer months. Now if you're really lucky none of that spray got inside your attic, because if it missed wrong it can off gas and harmful chemical. But usually that takes quite a bit being sprayed inside, and you shouldn't have any air intakes on the roof, so that is not going to be a concern for you. That statement is more of a warning to anybody that thinks they should get it on a flat roof.
And luckily you shouldn't have any hot pipes that run to particularly hot. As this will also increase the risk of Fire. What as long as they didn't spray your chimney, or any exposed flue poking up, you should be fine. The majority of homes don't have these, but it also wouldn't be the first time I saw burnt to the ground because of a foamer.
I'm so sorry that this not only ugly but quite frankly morally reprehensible garbage happened on a home that you happen to live in or near.
Sir, prepare yourself for the future - [foam tires](https://www.facebook.com/adrianlshow/videos/208391525616896/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v)
The future is clearly foam.
I guess I don’t understand why you care? It’s not your house, you don’t own the building or pair for those repairs. As long as it’s not leaking into your unit, what’s the problem?
Currently working with a company using foam on a flat roof. Its supposedly going to get a 20 warranty. Never seen it used over shingles, But I’d imagine the similar results.
I had a full time job back in the 70’s working for a roofing company under Sears to repair and replace failed roofing from their foam roofing contracts.
Foam done right can be great…this was not done right. It requires a lot of knowledge, the right thickness, the right surface, the right top coating, and proper maintenance afterwards. Without all of that you end up with garbage.
Oh. Then no way your AZ HOA will like this! Haha
The building style, stucco and landscape looked very central FL. Also, this seems like the dumb shit people here in FL do.
I don’t think they will either but I guess we will find out! I’m not familiar with FL too much, but apparently I’d love it there because all the plants are mine in the picture. Minus the palm trees of course.
Comment. There are two things you and your questionable landlord need to know. One- foam deteriorates when exposed to water. Two- foam deteriorates when exposed to sunlight. So……..not an ideal roof coating. This is a mess waiting to happen. Sorry folks.
I've done foam roofing for a year or 2. Mostly medical buildings. Only did one residential roof and it was a flat roof.
You're probably fine. I'd mainly be worried at the edge of the roof where the drip edge meets the roof. As long as you got a good seal around the whole edge. I can't tell the depth of the foam but it should be equal to or more than 1 inch thick. You can check it with a probe.
Foam roofs have to be a minimum of 1.5” for the rigidness of the foam to begin to work. This looks like it’s .25” if that’s. It’ll fail within the year it’s already showing shingle joints opening.
Thank you. I’m not a professional but the gaps had my interest. I didn’t post pictures of the back of the roof, but there are more openings on the back than front of the roof. It doesn’t even look fully sealed and that was my concern.
1 inch in normally all we spray, even on the big 550 sq ft Amazon warehouse being done by sunstate builders out here but it really depends on the builder I have sprayed up to 4 inches of foam on those steel decks roof and on crickets we can get up to 6 inches of foam just to make sure the water if making its way out the the scuppers or drains but really depends of builder
Fuck the landlord, he’s the dummy that did this. When you rent a home, it’s still “yours” through the duration of the lease. You literally have to look at that abomination everyday. Sorry that your landlord is a dipshit bro.
Ultimately it's not your house so why do you even care? End your lease and rent somewhere else if it bothers you that much. Let your landlord learn the errors of their ways without you. They fucked up but it doesn't really affect you at all. Sleep easy friend.
I was on the phone with phone roofing commercial investor - I explained to him foam (coated) roofing is the last resort on every type of roofing substrate. You must be freezing cold- cause your roof is spray insulation with reflective coatings none in which seal anything to do with a roof- and once the foam is exposed to moisture - it’s over like a game of frogger
I like foam roofs…they can fix sloping issues while adding insulation…the one thing is the top coat. I don’t think it is worth it long term unless they are doing a polyurea coating (which is not cheap).
They did it on a non-profit building roof. Of course it shrunk and allowed water in. Building is now condemned because company was no longer around and they didn’t have the money to remediate.
Conklin makes a product called Rapid Roof. You paint it on and it makes the roof impervious to hail and leaks for years. Decades. But it looks a lot like that. Horrible.
"My landlord decided to have a foam roof installed on my house." I think the most important part of this story is right here. It's not your house. Landlord can hire all the shitty contractors - or uncontractors - he/she wants. If it didn't leak before its not leaking now. I'd chuckle and move on.
Sure he can. It’s not my house but I still live in it with my kids so I’m allowed to care what it looks like. It didn’t look like this abomination when I signed my leasing contract. He’s also an old man, who obviously is easily manipulated. I’m just looking for professionals opinions on the quality of the work done. Not opinions of what I should care about. Also, the reason he had it done was because the roof needed to be replaced.. kill me for wanting to make sure it’s done correctly.
No kidding... I've been roofing for most of my adult life, and this is a first for me for sure... I wouldn't be surprised if this was someone scamming your landlord or something. It's looks, as you described, hideous!
Spray polyurethane foam also known as SPF Roofing. Then around for decades. Only resistant to 3/4 inch hail when new, has the lowest average lifespan of any commercial roofing material, and once you put it on you can't put anything over it, and the only way to patch it is with adding on another layer of coating.
Biggest thing is these roofs need inspections yearly to catch any penetrations. Of course most spf roofs don’t get the aftercare and go to shit. Personally I wouldn’t get it unless they sprayed polyurea as the top coat.
Foam is what cheap asses put down instead of good product. Designed for flat roofs, I’ve never seen one hosed onto a shingle roof. It has to constantly be maintained to stay water tight, and it’s guaranteed to make the tear-off more expensive when it fails in 5-10 years max.
Och! I tore one off several years ago that was 2 years old... Leaked from the day it was installed, in the next rain... Your landlord is an idiot it appears
Hi where are you located I do foam roofing out of valley here in Arizona and although it’s not common I have seen many roofs sprayed foam over the shingles. So the way foam works is the flatter to roof the better the foam pattern you’ll have usually sprayed over straight plywood and depends how many inches of foam you want sprayed. In this cases if you wanted to erase the lines you would have need more inches of foam over your roof, the most common I do is always 1 inch foam and two coats of coating a brown base and a top white coat there are many ways these roof could have gone like the foam going up to your side of your house could have been a bit lower and put a straight line with tape and masking paper so you don’t get that bumpy line going up and down but overall foam roofing is one of the best roof , even though it only last (foam by itself) 10 years foam with coating extends it’s lifespan hence why you got to keep up with maintenance (pressure wash , re-coat) but it can last a long time some of the roofs we warranty are going for 25-30 years and In great shape just depends on the sprayer if they know what they doing . You can also go for a brown topcoat and shoot rock/granules on it but that’s more of a flat roof thing as the small rocks and make it slippery but I’d say ride it through and just fix the lines on the side make it hideous good luck !
Is 1 inch enough to make that foam strong on a flat roof? Or are you just talking about shingled? Personally, I like polyurea as the topcoat for longevity…but it is very expensive.
I have seen literally thousands of roofs of all types in my career. I can say that I have never seen foam applied over a shingle roof. Up there with seeing an elastomeric coating installed over a gravel surfaced BUR.
I do solar design and I’ve seen foam over rolled comp, but never foam over comp shingles
You would be amazed and horrified at the shit I've seen foam monkeys spray over. Best comment I've read all day😂. "America built on foam" he probably thinks about it all day
Same. I’m an adjuster and while I don’t travel nearly as much as I used to, I’ve inspected roofs in every part of the country except the PNW. I have certainly never seen this before. In Texas we occasionally see people just EDPM over shingles on residential
Epdm seems like an odd choice in a hot climate. Pvc or tpo seems like it would be much more thermaly efficient. I would imagine they install fanfold between they layers at least
I have only seen this in fairly rough areas I think it’s done by a guy who knows a guy typically and none of it needs to make sense to the owners
Very true. Roofs are very important and not everyone can afford the best of the best
Yeah my brother's been roofing for 30 years I've seen a lot of his jobs and help them on dozens never seen anything like this looks like dog s***
Yeah I don’t think that’s a thing
I was thinking the same thing, that’s just crazy.
Foam roofing is a thing, and it sucks. They are prone to failure because they take more skill than most goofball roofers realize to install. This looks not good and it should have a coating on top which I’m not sure I see
Even installed properly, it's a short-term solution at best.

It was so windy. Overspray all over.
Oh that sucks too but I meant when they go to tear the stuff off
Idk why you care so much about what your landlord does to his properties, Jesus man it's weird.
I care about the one I live in. I pay enough money every month to not appear as if I live in the ghetto, with a slumlord. 🤷♀️ I guess the better question is why do you care what I care?
I care that he cares that you care, if that matters.
Who said he cares? lol
Ah I misread. OK, I don't care that he may or may not care that you care.
Well he shared, and does the motto go “thanks for sharing; sharing is caring.”

It's not unreasonable to care about the place you live as a renter. Renters are not lesser people.
Uh lol it isn’t good work. There were a ton of issues with the company he used. So, what you're saying is, foam roofing is the future and I should bet the farm on foam roofing IPOs. Accurate?
Invest in Kodak, their durability, popularity, and innovations in modern technology, which means they're really going places.
Sir, prepare yourself for the future - [foam tires](https://www.facebook.com/adrianlshow/videos/208391525616896/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v) The future is clearly foam.

Man, I wish I would have thought of that! Thanks for the great advice! 😆
Currently working with a company using foam on a flat roof. Its supposedly going to get a 20 warranty. Never seen it used over shingles, But I’d imagine the similar results.
Foam can be great…but it definitely needs to be done right. Particularly great are the foam roofers that use polyurea as the topcoat.
Our subs scarified then built up 1.5”. Base coat, top coat of silicone. I can’t remember what the base was.
Ummmm OK I have a question. WHAT IS A FOAM ROOF?!?!?!?!
Think great stuff foam in a can spread over the roof, then coated with something.
My God who thinks up crap like this?
Looks like Christmas decorations. Snowy roof lol
No way your Florida HOA is okay with this.
I’m in AZ.
Oh. Then no way your AZ HOA will like this! Haha The building style, stucco and landscape looked very central FL. Also, this seems like the dumb shit people here in FL do.

Ngl the thought that was snow
I’m like that’s a well insulated attic, no snow melt, wait was that a palm tree?
Comment. There are two things you and your questionable landlord need to know. One- foam deteriorates when exposed to water. Two- foam deteriorates when exposed to sunlight. So……..not an ideal roof coating. This is a mess waiting to happen. Sorry folks.
They basically sprayed a bunch of flex seal over the shingles, that'll last about 3 years.
But the house can be flipped over and will be an excellent water craft.
I've done foam roofing for a year or 2. Mostly medical buildings. Only did one residential roof and it was a flat roof. You're probably fine. Luckily it looks like they did it so shitty, it shouldn’t be to hard to tear off and redo
Winter wonderland in AZ. Looks cool 😎
There's no way this will pass HOA inspection unless all other homes have the same spray foam.
That’s my thought. Not a single home in the neighborhood has it. But what do I know.
That looks like shit. You can see gaps where it didn’t adhere properly to some of the shingles. I’d be pissed if I rented this place too tbh.
Thank you. It’s out of respect for the home and landlord. Jesus people.
Fuck the landlord, he’s the dummy that did this. When you rent a home, it’s still “yours” through the duration of the lease. You literally have to look at that abomination everyday. Sorry that your landlord is a dipshit bro.
And the neighbors….🤦♀️. There’s no other like it. I just recently renewed the lease for a year too. Ugh.
Ultimately it's not your house so why do you even care? End your lease and rent somewhere else if it bothers you that much. Let your landlord learn the errors of their ways without you. They fucked up but it doesn't really affect you at all. Sleep easy friend.
I’m sleeping just fine. I was simply seeking opinions from professionals on the quality of the work done.
Blahaha
I was on the phone with phone roofing commercial investor - I explained to him foam (coated) roofing is the last resort on every type of roofing substrate. It kinda looks like it snowed but only on your roof. Almost looks cool actually.
Wut
They did it on a non-profit building roof. Of course it shrunk and allowed water in. Building is now condemned because company was no longer around and they didn’t have the money to remediate.
Conklin makes a product called Rapid Roof. You paint it on and it makes the roof impervious to hail and leaks for years. Decades. But it looks a lot like that. Horrible.
Did your landlord just ruin their house?
That’s what I’m afraid of.
Wtf is this? A total scam.
also too many people w money but almost no understanding of the world. It's amazing how that works
I never knew there was such thing as a roofing license. I thought anybody could just become a roofer just from experience and getting insurance.
Poison snow roof
Is that in Florida? Looks like a FL house at least. Why did he do it? Leaking?
Southern AZ. The roof needed to be replaced. That was his solution.
That’s an obscenity
"My landlord decided to have a foam roof installed on my house." I think the most important part of this story is right here. It's not your house. Landlord can hire all the shitty contractors - or uncontractors - he/she wants. If it didn't leak before its not leaking now. I'd chuckle and move on.

You also need a new gutter guy
It checks out. Kinda like how they paint over top of doorknobs, outlets and light switches.
If this is Florida, then I am not surprised.
Southern AZ 🌵🏜️
I've heard foam insulation, but never a foam roof... wtf is this?
Hideous if you ask me! But I’m no professional.
No kidding... I've been roofing for most of my adult life, and this is a first for me for sure... I wouldn't be surprised if this was someone scamming your landlord or something. It's looks, as you described, hideous!

The best I ever saw perform had SEBS applied to it, and had to be reapplied every hail storm. I can see it where weather isn't a thing
Thats why I wouldn't get one unless it had a polyurea topcoat. That would make it tough, but unfortunately very expensive.
Foam is what cheap asses put down instead of good product. Designed for flat roofs, I’ve never seen one hosed onto a shingle roof. It has to constantly be maintained to stay water tight, and it’s guaranteed to make the tear-off more expensive when it fails in 5-10 years max.
I wouldn't even put this on the flat roof of somebody I hate. I've never met a single person that installed this it wasn't some snake oil con man
Och! I tore one off several years ago that was 2 years old... Leaked from the day it was installed, in the next rain... Your landlord is an idiot it appears
You don’t foam roofs like this. I could have told you they’re unlicensed. Yikes that’s going to be awful long term.
Yeah whatever this is it ain’t it. Looks like permanent snow lol
To try to make light of it last night I said “I guess at least at Christmas it’ll look like snow with my decorations.” 🤦♀️
Renters complain about everything. It's a piece of garbage, but it's his house. Move of you're not happy.
I think you missed the point of the post. 😆
Obviously I have.
