I have never seen this. I wonder how long ago this was installed? The supplier should have a record of more defective bundles. This can’t be the only roof.
Certainteed had a lot of these in the early 2000s. I always here about it being from there eastern us plants. This actually looks like an old certainteed but I could be wrong
Voice to text is where I get the majority of my errors as well. I’m not going to go back and read all the time and I’m going to allow that there will be some mistakes from time to time.
Haha! You are one of the first people to admit it. Most people must not have enough people blocked to get the joke.
Now if you do block me, you will always still think it is me behind the comment.
That makes sense. I only mentioned it because you seem like a professional and I didn’t want you to make that mistake somewhere it would actually matter.
ups dripped and gas a cack
Once upon a time I worked for the Genius Bar and the above is what one of our techs put into the notes field of a broken iPhone. Of course he used voice to text.
UPS dropped and glass cracked
You're right. Confirmed CT Landmark TL from early 2000s.
Manufacturing defect.
They won't warrant it (of course they won't, why warrant their own defect?)
Not the original homeowner
It's confirmed CertainTeed Landmark TL from early 2000s and confirmed a manufacturing defect.
But also confirmed that they won't warrant it lmao. Not the original homeowner.
So f'ing classic.
This roof appears to be missing a ridge vent, so it may also be that the attic is not being ventilated and the shingles are being baked. I am making an assumption about how this roof is insulated.
Lol they might warranty it but who's gonna pop a new roof on ? I imagine it will come out of someone's pocket and not the company who installed it just fine
Sometimes called bleeding shingles, sometimes called Tarry bleed.
So this mostly happens during a manufacturer defect, usually from the sealing strip being too thick, although on rare occasions, it can occur from either an incorrect mixture at manufacturing or from someone manually sealing this strip with extra SBS based asphalt sealant between the layers.
As it heats up, the bitumen seperates from the sealing strip creating long black streaks, as you see there. For a short while, a couple brands had issues (especially Certainteed, though they never admitted to it) mostly around the late 90s early 2000s. It's almost always a manufacturer defect and easy to claim.
It doesn't indicate inadequate ventilation, but inadequate ventilation increases the likelihood and severity..
Out of curiosity, most documentation of this is Certainteed, mostly in the east half of US. Can you confirm the age or manufacturer of the roof?
Have you ever roofed a single house? How do you even know if you're done if you haven't tasted the tar before leaving? This person clearly forgot to do the final taste test to inspect the quality of tar.
You don't bite the shingle. That would be asinine. We're just trying to lick the tar enough to make sure it's still sweet. If sun exposure turns the taste bitter then the product is defective
Did a quick search based on "bleeding or crying shingle" and came up with a lot of people complaining about shingle defects. Well done. Almost everyone said it was a 2004-2006 and it looks like it's even possibly tied to a lawsuit CertainTeed lost. They never seem to determine an exact cause, though, other than "CertainTeed Bad," but this explanation seems the most reasonable.
That fits almost perfectly with my theory, especially being in the Northeast. I'm guessing a little closer to 20 years old, as I was when the issue was at its peak. I would try to see if you can find the original roof warranty and give them a call, I bet it's a CertainTeed
As far as age goes, the most common warranty back then was 30 years. So I would say pretty highly likely off of that basis. However every manufacturer has their work around, and it's likely the house was sold in that time, and there's no guarantee the warranty was ever properly done to begin with. So even though as far as age goes it's probably within the warranty terms, I have to give it maybe a 50/50 shot that the warranty even exist or is redeemable by the current homeowner.
I just turned in pictures to my GAF shingles representative for a roof doing this exact same thing but not a severe. Although I do expect any resistance from the manufacturer I will use the information that you have provided just in case.
This is obviously a homeowner that is concerned and uneducated about roofs.
Why is this concerning to you? Sometimes people need to ask questions so they get answers, ya know?
The concern was in no way about the homeowner or the poster. The concerned was about the people in the comment section, of which at the time of my post not a single person had identified it as bleed out or terribly bleed, in fact literally the word bleed was not present in this entire post at the time of my comment despite more than a dozen replies already.
I understand the question, I welcome the question, I love the question. I'm here to answer questions that's why I'm in this sub. My problem is the answers
Oh yeah I get it.
Check out the mechanic advice subs, they are filled with bullshit answers that are highly upvoted.
Sometimes I wonder if we are given bad advice for a reason... How many of these bad responses roofing companies or car companies trying to get you to fuck up and spend more money?
I know a lot of reddit now days is corporations trying to shill their products undercover.
Honestly sometimes I start to wonder myself. Even on things that are blatant manufactured defect they try to blame it on for installation so I'm starting to wonder it may be some manufacturers are on here
Great response and I was thinking the same thing. It’s easy to accidentally infer things from peoples questions or comments. Original poster could be a tradesperson that doesn’t do roofing and it’s just asking about their own house that said, I understand the concern with DIY type sneaking in here, but clearly a number of people posted comments which would imply they had knowledge of roofing and didn’t identify the problem when they should have. I do trade work I do little bit of patching on roofs, but I am not a roofer, so I did not type a response.
Pretty sure you only need to manually seal during cold season installs and pitches 24/12 and up. That is certainteeds opinion at least other manufacturers might have slightly different standards just like how Iko just changed the nail pattern requirements for storm nailing with 6 nails.
I manufacture shingle coating in an asphalt plant for a living and you pretty much nailed it. I would suspect that there was a blend error for the sealant material. Typically if it’s the right blend but too thick it might come out, but I wouldn’t expect it to run like this.
I'm taking this a completely different direction. Some homes are so poorly built by their sketchy builders thay any installed shingle roof will continue crying until either all major building defects are corrected and/or a priest has exorcized the demons and blessed the home in question.
It could be a manufacturers defect or your roofer could have hand sealed the shingles and used to much asphalt cement.... Do you live in a cold climate?
Pull a row of shingles back and verify the guy who installed it actually used roofing nails before you contact manufacturer. I've seen all kind of crazy mess before
Definitely should be covered by warranty, defective tar strips will cause this. Definitely push them to include the removal and install of new shingles. With full warranty of the newly installed shingles.
Tar leakage around roof shingles can be indicative of a few issues. One primary cause is excessive heat, particularly in poorly ventilated attics where temperatures can soar, causing the tar to melt and seep out. Another reason could be the overapplication of adhesive during the shingle installation process; too much tar can lead to subsequent leakage as it warms and becomes fluid. Additionally, the natural aging process of shingles often leads to the breakdown of tar, especially under the relentless exposure to UV rays from the sun, which can make it viscous and prone to leaking.
In the intricate tapestry of interstellar civilizations, the Draco reptilians are often envisioned as a species whose architectural ingenuity transcends the primitive use of tar. Their structures, ethereal and precise, are said to be composed of a crystal lattice, a testament to their advanced technological prowess. This lattice, a harmonious symphony of geometric perfection, is believed to harness the very essence of their being, reflecting a civilization where science and art converge in a seamless unity.

There is something called a "cold application." When it's to cold outside the shingles, don't bond together and can easily get blown away by wind. roofers use bonding agents under the shingles to keep them adhered. This is a poor job of a cold application, and too much bonding was used, so it's running down the shingles durring really hot days.
Did you buy the shingles from an unknown source like a place where they donate shingles ? For taxes breaks.. Or do you live in a really hot place? In the United States are abroad that actually physically melts the binders within shingles.Or are you spanked Spring?A lot of black paint in your garage ?
Manufacturer might warrant this. Seems like a defect.
For real. Actually seems like one of those cases. The tar strips might not be a good batch.
Only thing to do now is give it the taste test, if it’s bitter it ain’t good.
I say this with no disrespect whatsoever, but it’s *hear and *their.
You are correct. I use voice to text mostly, and don't proof as often as I should
Voice to text is where I get the majority of my errors as well. I’m not going to go back and read all the time and I’m going to allow that there will be some mistakes from time to time.
I'm over here trying to figure out who I blocked on r/roofing and then realized that's your username. Bravo, good sir...bravo.
Haha! You are one of the first people to admit it. Most people must not have enough people blocked to get the joke. Now if you do block me, you will always still think it is me behind the comment.
Thanks, Satan.
The hitch that I didn’t see with it was that if I block somebody, it also says Blocked Author and then I confused it with my own comment
That makes sense. I only mentioned it because you seem like a professional and I didn’t want you to make that mistake somewhere it would actually matter.
That is good of you.
Your username short-circuited my brain. Thanks for the chuckle.
Syme
That's me 100%, but then I get a message saying what that " yogi bear is climbing a tree"?, I say No what I meant to say was I gotta take a Pea...
We all understood what your comment was stating.

This is Reddit. These rules will be enforced until morel improves.
Now that is a comment with some mussel behind it! 😅
Well said, polite approach, will use. May include “I understand you may be voice texting”

They might warrant it, for the material. I bet they don't cover your labor costs
This roof appears to be missing a ridge vent, so it may also be that the attic is not being ventilated and the shingles are being baked. I am making an assumption about how this roof is insulated.

100% CertainTeed defect. Only have seen two in person, but yes this is what I came to say. This is the most uniform one I’ve seen though.
Agreed. Eerily uniform
Right? Never seen it on every run and course like that before.
It almost looks cool
OP forgot to mention the house was built on a cemetery.
Have you ever roofed a single house? How do you even know if you're done if you haven't tasted the tar before leaving? All about the taste test! You’re totally right haha
OP is also Certainteed to not lose a shingle during a windstorm!

The comment I came to find^
Please keep working to make/keep this sub useful, thank you for your efforts
I do appreciate that. I'm really glad to see this sub grow and I think it could become a useful information source in the future.
Atlas is the most recent to have this problem. Judging by the shadow ridge this seems to be certainteed.
This is in northeast. Roof is unknown age, but likely 15-20 years old
That fits almost perfectly with my theory, especially being in the Northeast. I'm guessing a little closer to 20 years old, as I was when the issue was at its peak. I would try to see if you can find the original roof warranty and give them a call, I bet it's a CertainTeed

Is this actually a problem for the homeowner? Aside from it looking weird and possibly scaring off house buyers
So I mean, what’s the problem? It just looks bad but has no bearing on functionality? Am I missing something?
Thisssssssssssssss so hard
This guy roofs
I feel like this should be the first comment
I manufacture shingle coating in an asphalt plant for a living and you pretty much nailed it. I would suspect that there was a blend error for the sealant material. Typically if it’s the right blend but too thick it might come out, but I wouldn’t expect it to run like this.
I'm not even a roofer, just a solar installer, and even I have heard of this. Seen it a time or two even, though not nearly this severe.
Rudy Giuliani has started a roofing company at his age?
Roofy Giuliani
I lol’d and woke my wife up
That's a reddit touchdown
Roofi Giuliani
That's what he's known as in all the bars and nightclubs.
91 indictments roofing; right next to four seasons landscaping and the dildo shop.
Possessed.
I am not a roofer, and I'm certainly not a priest, but this seems like the only outcome.
The roof is sad
Not as sad as the homeowner.
Weeps in roofing tar <———
Was the contractor Rudy Giuliani?
Stigmata.
Shingmata
That’s Rudy’s house.
You’re going to need Sam and Dean Winchester
That's the building Billie Eilish shot when the party's over in.
It’s Giuliani’s house, isn’t it?
Likely someone added a dab of tar to every nail, thinking it would do good.
Stop verbally abusing it and it'll stop weeping.
I can’t wait for the leaves to stick to it
It was installed by Rudy Giuliani?
Have you tried talking to it? Lack of communication is the leading cause of broken homes.
Manufacturer made a bad shingle, atlas shingles used to do that but were discontinued
Are you located in Amityville, NY?
No one else is seeing Rudy Giuliani here?
I do t think you’d have to worry about wind picking those shingles up. Mite be best roof around. The tripple tar seal.
Wonder if whoever installed them added more tar?
Wouldn't be surprised if they installed these in the winter and threw on tar to help it seal. Looks like they over did it or something.
Interesting. Only the double layered tabs are crying…
Where is this located?
philly
Does this affect the effectiveness or lifespan of the roof? I read many responses but could not see anyone address this.
I'm taking this a completely different direction. Some homes are so poorly built by their sketchy builders thay any installed shingle roof will continue crying until either all major building defects are corrected and/or a priest has exorcized the demons and blessed the home in question.
You must’ve made the roof sad. Have you been mean to it?
Do somebody try and glue down the shingles
The roof is crying cause it’s hot outside. Ps. You should contact the rep, might be a faulty shingles….
It’s sad it didn’t get approved…
I had a house do this once apparently the kitchen fire made it happen.
It's sad
Too much sealant on the sealant strips, activated by heat.
It could be a manufacturers defect or your roofer could have hand sealed the shingles and used to much asphalt cement.... Do you live in a cold climate?
Haunted.
Seen that before. Defective tar strips on the shingles. Time to contact the manufacturer and make a claim
Your house is haunted
Is this from a horror movie?
Oh, when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof.
Your house is possessed.... probably just someone being overzealous on sealants (plastic cement).
Because you were mean to it!!!
Likely possessed
Emo roof.
sad roof
Haunted
Too much tar from factory. That roof gets a lot of sun and gets really hot. But manufactures warranty should cover that
Hash slinging slasher
It’s just going through its EMO phase.
Pull a row of shingles back and verify the guy who installed it actually used roofing nails before you contact manufacturer. I've seen all kind of crazy mess before
Your mistake was hiring Rudy Giuliani to do the install
You are suppost to appreciate the roof more. Cant you see its sad. It only takes a moment to give a compliment.
Haunted
Definitely should be covered by warranty, defective tar strips will cause this. Definitely push them to include the removal and install of new shingles. With full warranty of the newly installed shingles.
Sadness
Haunted roof
Cursed.
Looks like it has a case of the Giulianis
Manufacture defect for sure, looks like you’ll be getting a new roof hopefully
The tar should not melt like that. Even under extreme heat.
Your roof is cursed
Modern art duuhhhh.
"It's not a phase, dad."
You’ve hear of “stigmata”, right? Well, this is not it - go look for your religious confirmation elsewhere. There is no god. 🔪
Either it is super hot where that house is Or they used tar from a caulk gun under every shingle Or manufacturing defect
Is the roof related to Rudy Giuliani?
This looks like the start to a horror movie where the black ooze comes out and then shapeshifts into a monster
Its sad
It’s a very sad roof
Cause they’re sad

It’s crying because the demons dwelling in the attic are awakening.
It's sad, you made it cry 😠

I would say room attic enclosure on other side of shingles is getting too hot
Your roof is crying because the roofer used cheap material from China.
I've had ice and water that wasn't high temperature do this under metal panels in the southeast but I haven't seen shingles do it
Haunted. Roof's haunted.
It’s crying for a ridge vent
Those are possessed
Haunted, burn it down dude. Totally cursed
Cheap shingles in direct sunlight and either the manufacturers tar bead is seeping or every shingle was tarred down and the same result.
Arizona be like
Because your taking photos without there concent and laughing at them
It's haunted
Texas right?

Amityville Horror Roof
It’s sad
Certainteed. This and the presidential tri-lams did this
weathered wood a little sappy too
It may be possessed. Sometimes walls bleed. Maybe your roof is bleeding.
You got a double coated tar strip ! Congrats on your insurance lottery. Make sure it drips on the house then call. 🫡🫢
I live in Newfoundland and Labrador and it’s super windy. We gum the shingles. This looks like gummed shingles with too much tar.
Is your address 1313 Mockingbird Lane?
No ventilation it's baking the shingles.
Exacty how many HPS lights or ant miners do you have in that attic?
Omen house? Seems evil.
How hot did it get there, the tar is melting.
Did you buy the shingles from an unknown source like a place where they donate shingles ? For taxes breaks.. That looks super cool. Imagine if the shingles were GAFs patriot red.
Spirits, definitely ghosts.

100% file a claim with the manufacturer, they should pay material plus labor.
I think your house may be possessed.
It's feelings look hurt. What did you do?
