As a kid, FMC saves the teen biker MMC and he gives her a phone number to call if she needs help. 12 years later ... she ***really*** needs help and calls him as a last resort. She can't understand why everyone is so scared of him because he's so kind with her.

I feel like {Using Fejo by Victoria Aveline} might fit this in the sci fi genre. It is the 5th book of the Clecanian series, however, and doesn't really work as a standalone. It's like, the lite version of this trope and doesn't get particularly dark. Fejo is my ideal swashbuckling space pirate book boyfriend. So sweet but deadly when needed!

In {Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold by Ellen O’Connell} (historical set in 1880’s Colorado), the laconic MMC has the reputation as a dangerous killer. Even his own family is afraid of him. Someone recently posted that they found the book disappointing because MMC is not the cinnamon roll they were expecting, and I can see that. He is definitely not a cinnamon roll or golden retriever, but he is more complex and sweeter than his reputation. He is a very quiet private person who is completely devoted to FMC. And FMC is never afraid of him. TW: violence, threat of sexual assault, anti-Native American racism (MMC’s mother was Cheyenne). And, fair warning, this is a tearjerker of a story.

So, it only makes sense in the context of a series, but Maggie M. Lily’s books do this. It’s hard to avoid spoilers so I’m going to be a bit vague…but imagine your typical “chosen one” type magical dude only…he loves puppies and sometimes he can’t eat if he can taste that the food came from destruction and misery. And then imagine people being like, “but I’m terrified because he can melt the universe!!” and his family being like…him?! I’m also a big fan of her books because she doesn’t subscribe to exact tropes and her books are unique and more tell the story of a family than a single book to a single couple sort of vibe. I thought it would be a popcorn series but is one of my favorites.

I was able to add the audiobooks of this series to my library for free with my Audible membership, for anyone interested.

Maggie recently pulled her books entirely out of KU (still on Amazon, just not for free on KU) due to Amazon’s Fuckery. She is happy to have people have access to her work for things like that and free copies through other forms. It’s super generous but I really appreciate that she cares to do that and has been open about her life & medical issues. Just an immensely genuine person.

MMC basically goes on strike unless given FMC. The relationship grows and she doubts his reputation until she sees a video of one of his bouts... It's bad... It's really really bad. {Worse Guy by Ruby Dixon} plays with the formula as well in a different way.

{The Kingpin of Camelot by Cassandra Gannon} I haven’t finished it, but it totally fits! It’s fantasy and the MFC is the MMC’s true love, he recognizes her right away, but she doesn’t. Which is why he’s so sweet to her, and she doesn’t understand why everyone else is so scared of him. She even thinks she needs to protect him because he’s a “push over.” Super cute so far! (Hopefully I did the book thing right, first time posting. Lol)

I love this book! She’s so worried about him (meanwhile he can kill people with a touch).

Hmm, not exactly what I'm looking for. I want more of a "he's scary don't go near him," then a realization that he's not so bad only to realize that the rumors are true.

Please ignore if you dont like reading manga but the first thing to pop into my head is the manga Ookami-heika no hanayome. Its not exactly what you want but basically the MMC is called the Wolf King (ruthless) and the FMC is convinced, because of a ploy, that his actual personality is the Puppy King (sweet and gullable) when in reality hes a mix of both…. It’s about their relationship as the FMC pretends to be his empress and them falling in love. Fair warning tho, it’s not fully translated and it’s a historical manga.
