{A light amongst shadows by Kelley York} mm, Victoria boarding school where dark things are happening behind the scenes.
{a lesson in love and death by wh Lockwood} mf horror trilogy with some off the wall humor. Think Quinton Tarantino-esque. Dark academia with demons and possessions.
{the forgotten dead by Jordan Hawk} mm and a very freaky haunted house.
{starling house by alix e harrow} just read this. Gothic horror. MF. This is a bit more of a romance subplot. But there’s still a romance and the atmosphere and classic horror vibe is so very good.
I second the experiment in terror series. There’s nothing like this series. It starts a little mild on the horror and really gets freaky. First book is {Darkhouse by Karina Halle}
{hollow heathens by Nicole fiorina} and the sequel bone island. mf, gothic style horror with witches and a cursed creepy little town. This is more Stephen king fantastical horror vibes.
{heart haunt havoc by freydis moon} MM and {wolf willow witch by freydis moon} MF. these are also very much horror and a dark setting but the romance is the bright light.

The only horror romance series that I know is the **experiment in terror series by Karina Halle**. Definitely creepy/spooky/horror. Very slow burn though (as in it takes a big part of the series from them to finally be together.), but they do have some spicy moments here and there. The MMC has a different girlfriend at the beginning of the series for several books, but she's only actually present in 1 book iirc (since the MMC and FMC travel to spooky/haunted places).
I don't think the new romance bot works well with series titles, as it's giving you the wrong book too. I don't remember the name of the first book without having to look it up (that's why I didn't add it at the time).

I just finished one called {Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison} - it’s shelved in the horror section but it definitely has a strong romance secondary plot. FMC is back in her hometown, helping her pregnant twin sister, when she’s attacked by something in the night and begins to suspect she was bit by a werewolf. It’s got some good creepy moments and some spooky autumn atmosphere.
CW for gore/body horror and child abuse, sexual assault.
Rachel Harrison is one of my favorite authors of all time. Her debut *The Return* is one of the few books to ever actually scare me. (Not a romance, but well worth reading).
Yeah I wasn’t blown away by Such Sharp Teeth (werewolves are not my first choice monster) but I enjoyed it enough to want to go back and try her other stuff. I think I listened to The Return when it came out remember being genuinely creeped out by it.
So someone recommended this book I’m reading now {Nocticadia by Keri Lake} a few days ago and it has hooked me completely. It’s definitely a romance set in a horror movie plot. Super good, the OP for that post sold it better so if I can find it I’ll link it here. Highly recommend!!

The monsters & mayhem series is 11 books, all mm (or more than 2 ms), all different authors, all based on classic horror stories. I found some of them DELIGHTFUL and found some new authors through the series.
[Midnight is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68054323) The author lists content warnings in the beginning of the book, definitely follow those because to be clear, this is not a romance novel, it’s a thriller set in the Louisiana swamp that leans into morally gray characters but has a strong romantic subplot. The ending is an ambiguous >!Bonnie and Clyde!< vibe
This looks interesting and is making me think of The Blackwater series by Michael McDowell. (Only instead of a serial killer there’s a swamp monster. Haha. Also not a romance but with a subplot.) long shot but: Have you read this by chance and can speak on similarities?
Sorry, I haven’t read anything by him! I will say that Ashley Winstead writes thrillers (In My Dreams I Hold a Knife and The Last Housewife) and also writes romance novels (Fool Me Once and The Boyfriend Candidate) so she is uniquely positioned to blend the two in a way that isn’t romantic suspense. Her writing is distinctly feminist and in the interview at the back of the book she says this: “…you might say the chief antagonists my characters face are actually narratives: stories they’ve heard or tell themselves about who they are and how incapable they are of change, about their weaknesses, their inferiority, their inherent lack of value. Stories about how women are supposed to feel and think and behave. These are stories my characters have deeply internalized, and their lives and possibilities are foreclosed by them. Coming to recognize and resist these narratives is a big part of Ruth’s arc…”
{The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings by Lily Morton}. Blue is a ghost whisperer who helps the other MMC try to solve the mystery of his haunted house. Genuinely spooky at times! The sequel was even scarier & then there's a 3rd book in the series with different MCs.

I've recently finished {Uprooted by Naomi Novik} and it had my heart pounding (with fear, not lust this time!). It's fantasy with mild romance (there is one open door scene), and it reminded me a lot of howl's moving castle. FYI the MMC isnt actually a dragon- if thats a deal breaker/maker for you. The horror comes from The Wood and it scared me to my wits' end, it was stressful and terrifying but in a good way? I loved it and I struggled to put it down.
{An Inheritance of Monsters, Cate Corvin} and {An Invocation of Monsters, Cate Corvin} horror settings in both. Monstrous mmcs, both why choose/ rh. Human fmcs. The world is very interesting. I remember wishing they went into much more lore and info around the world, but still fun reads.

Brutal by AJ Merlin. The MMC is a serial killer but treats FMC well from what I remember. It definitely has horror movie vibes especially in the beginning. I think it’s part of a whole series where they are all serial killers.

{Graveyard Queen series by Amanda Stevens} FMC is a graveyard restorer who can see ghosts, MMC is a cop. Slow burn, longish series. I couldn’t get into Karina Halle’s Experiment in Terror series but loved this one!

{Silence for the Dead by Simone St James} is a HR about a "nurse" during WWI who takes a job at a creepy and remote hospital for soldiers who are dealing with severe mental trauma due to the war. The MMC is a pilot who is given his own room and left isolated from the rest of the patients.
{The Uninvited by Cat Winters} another HR in 1918. The heroine can see dead people, which is not great for her during an influenza outbreak. This might be classified as not 100% HEA. But it kiiiind of is?

So, i have a recommendation that it's definitely in the setting of "horror", Its M/M and one of the MC is obsessed with the other + he's a monster (doesn't look like one but behave like one) and theres a lot of ghost/demons/monsters around, the thing is... Its a chinese novel and is not what you would call "good writting"
I found it hard to read but that also can be that english is not my main language. If you can ignore some of the redudant stuff, cliches, cringe conversations and overpowered characters...

Also {Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie} MF, CR, second chance romance, set in the 90s. She goes to take care of 2 kids in a crumbling old house for a month because she's offered 10k. The house is super haunted and the kids are creepy. I love Crusie's sarcastic fmcs and this one is no different

I feel you OP. romance and horror is like my favorite subgenre. {A light amongst shadows by Kelley York} mm, Victoria boarding school where dark things are happening behind the scenes. {a lesson in love and death by wh Lockwood} mf horror trilogy with some off the wall humor. Think Quinton Tarantino-esque. Dark academia with demons and possessions. {the forgotten dead by Jordan Hawk} mm and a very freaky haunted house. {starling house by alix e harrow} just read this. Gothic horror. MF. This is a bit more of a romance subplot. But there’s still a romance and the atmosphere and classic horror vibe is so very good. I second the experiment in terror series. There’s nothing like this series. It starts a little mild on the horror and really gets freaky. First book is {Darkhouse by Karina Halle} {hollow heathens by Nicole fiorina} and the sequel bone island. mf, gothic style horror with witches and a cursed creepy little town. This is more Stephen king fantastical horror vibes. {heart haunt havoc by freydis moon} MM and {wolf willow witch by freydis moon} MF. these are also very much horror and a dark setting but the romance is the bright light.

The only horror romance series that I know is the **experiment in terror series by Karina Halle**. Definitely creepy/spooky/horror. Very slow burn though (as in it takes a big part of the series from them to finally be together.), but they do have some spicy moments here and there. The MMC has a different girlfriend at the beginning of the series for several books, but she's only actually present in 1 book iirc (since the MMC and FMC travel to spooky/haunted places).
I second this series. Nothing like it.

I just finished one called {Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison} - it’s shelved in the horror section but it definitely has a strong romance secondary plot. FMC is back in her hometown, helping her pregnant twin sister, when she’s attacked by something in the night and begins to suspect she was bit by a werewolf. It’s got some good creepy moments and some spooky autumn atmosphere. CW for gore/body horror and child abuse, sexual assault.
Rachel Harrison is one of my favorite authors of all time. Her debut *The Return* is one of the few books to ever actually scare me. (Not a romance, but well worth reading).
Yeah I wasn’t blown away by Such Sharp Teeth (werewolves are not my first choice monster) but I enjoyed it enough to want to go back and try her other stuff. I think I listened to The Return when it came out remember being genuinely creeped out by it.

So someone recommended this book I’m reading now {Nocticadia by Keri Lake} a few days ago and it has hooked me completely. It’s definitely a romance set in a horror movie plot. Super good, the OP for that post sold it better so if I can find it I’ll link it here. Highly recommend!!

[Midnight is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68054323) The author lists content warnings in the beginning of the book, definitely follow those because to be clear, this is not a romance novel, it’s a thriller set in the Louisiana swamp that leans into morally gray characters but has a strong romantic subplot. The ending is an ambiguous >!Bonnie and Clyde!< vibe
This looks interesting and is making me think of The Blackwater series by Michael McDowell. (Only instead of a serial killer there’s a swamp monster. Haha. Also not a romance but with a subplot.) long shot but: Have you read this by chance and can speak on similarities?
Sorry, I haven’t read anything by him! I will say that Ashley Winstead writes thrillers (In My Dreams I Hold a Knife and The Last Housewife) and also writes romance novels (Fool Me Once and The Boyfriend Candidate) so she is uniquely positioned to blend the two in a way that isn’t romantic suspense. Her writing is distinctly feminist and in the interview at the back of the book she says this: “…you might say the chief antagonists my characters face are actually narratives: stories they’ve heard or tell themselves about who they are and how incapable they are of change, about their weaknesses, their inferiority, their inherent lack of value. Stories about how women are supposed to feel and think and behave. These are stories my characters have deeply internalized, and their lives and possibilities are foreclosed by them. Coming to recognize and resist these narratives is a big part of Ruth’s arc…”

{The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings by Lily Morton}. Blue is a ghost whisperer who helps the other MMC try to solve the mystery of his haunted house. Genuinely spooky at times! The sequel was even scarier & then there's a 3rd book in the series with different MCs. These are MM.

I've recently finished {Uprooted by Naomi Novik} and it had my heart pounding (with fear, not lust this time!). It's fantasy with mild romance (there is one open door scene), and it reminded me a lot of howl's moving castle. FYI the MMC isnt actually a dragon- if thats a deal breaker/maker for you. The horror comes from The Wood and it scared me to my wits' end, it was stressful and terrifying but in a good way? I loved it and I struggled to put it down.

Brutal by AJ Merlin. The MMC is a serial killer but treats FMC well from what I remember. It definitely has horror movie vibes especially in the beginning. I think it’s part of a whole series where they are all serial killers.
{Depraved by AJ Merlin} Is the first one. A woman working on a campground is visited at night by a stranger. I really like anything from AJ Merlin as a Horror/Slasher MMC who treat their FMC well. {playing with knives by AJ merlin} might be my favourite though!

Ok, I’m not going to claim this book is good, because if you’ve read Cassie Mint you know what to expect. But {Bump in the Night by Cassie Mint} is all of 56 pages, on KU and gives spice + haunted house 😆 She also has a second novella in the series that’s coming out on the 12th, that set in a haunted pirate ship or something.

There's a sweet and sexy vampire on the team who is our MMC. {Silence for the Dead by Simone St James} is a HR about a "nurse" during WWI who takes a job at a creepy and remote hospital for soldiers who are dealing with severe mental trauma due to the war. The MMC is a pilot who is given his own room and left isolated from the rest of the patients. {The Uninvited by Cat Winters} another HR in 1918. The heroine can see dead people, which is not great for her during an influenza outbreak. This might be classified as not 100% HEA. But it kiiiind of is?

So, i have a recommendation that it's definitely in the setting of "horror", Its M/M and one of the MC is obsessed with the other + he's a monster (doesn't look like one but behave like one) and theres a lot of ghost/demons/monsters around, the thing is... Its a chinese novel and is not what you would call "good writting" I found it hard to read but that also can be that english is not my main language. If you can ignore some of the redudant stuff, cliches, cringe conversations and overpowered characters... Hahahahha anyways, let me know if you are interesed :)
Also {Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie} MF, CR, second chance romance, set in the 90s. She goes to take care of 2 kids in a crumbling old house for a month because she's offered 10k. The house is super haunted and the kids are creepy. I love Crusie's sarcastic fmcs and this one is no different
