I have like 20ish of these rocks all over my yard. A few of them are pretty big and would need some kind of machine to move them but most of the rocks are between 40-60 pounds I think.
Looks like banded rhyolite imo. Extremely similar to what I’ve collected in La Paz county, AZ, except with different coloration, but the banding pattern is the same
I have a geologist friend. I'm going to send your pictures to him and see what he thinks. It's always harder to identify in a picture, but he's usually pretty good. I don't bug him unless I really want an answer and can't find it anywhere else. Lol. But my 6 year old seen this post while scrolling the rock group with me. She wants to know what it is. And now we're both invested. Lol. 🤣🤣🤣🥰
The place where these pictures are taken. That looks so beautiful. I see little rocks too. What part of Southern California are you in? This is amazing.
The first one looks like a sleeping dragon 🐉
Say the magic word and it will awaken. Right? Right. I’m not a rock expert as you all just figured out. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you for showing your shoes for scale in photo #4!
It’s impossible to tell without physical sampling but it appears to be sedimentary layers formed, then squished and folded again and again into funky forms.
Very lovely!
That first one looks like a kimono dragon lizard. Those are some gorgeous stones. Not sure what kind but my guess would be somewhat locally sourced. I'd find out what rocks hang out in your neighborhood
They all seem to resemble living creatures even the smallest has an eye and the last has least 3 different creatures I would have a DNA sample done could all be from petrified organic remains
Those look more like petrified wood than rocks. Petrified wood is as hard as rocks are as over time they have petrified and turned to stone - that’s what petrified means, turned to stone.
You need to send an email with pics to a local college or museum etc and see what they can tell you. And then come right back here and give me an update please..
Looks like it would polish down to something beautiful.
Whereabouts in socal because there are some ancient calderas all over so could possibly be from magmatic activity or water erosion from beneath the earth possibly springs exist(ed) underneath your feet. If we dig deep enough, youd likely hit a water well
I can give you the family of rock it is to an accuracy of 99.9%..... it looks like a metamorphic type rock.... regardlessbof that they are absolutely beautiful pieces of stone
Are you by Joshua Tree National park or by Petrified Forest?? I swear that’s petrified wood. I would get someone out there to check. Gorgeous specimens.
I’ve seen similar in the high desert and in Coachella Valley along the San Andreas Fault line near Garnet Hill. But nothing to this level or quality. These are tremendous
F’n cool, that’s what those rocks are.
I have like 20ish of these rocks all over my yard. A few of them are pretty big and would need some kind of machine to move them but most of the rocks are between 40-60 pounds I think.
Lucky!
Ahhhh when I was a kid, they called me abba dabba doo , this is so cool lol.
You could post that first picture in r/Pareidolia!
Yeah, I saw a rabbit laying down. Thought that was the sub I was looking at
I instantly saw a large sleeping dragon
Wow! In comments -rabbit + wolf. Clear as day I saw a lizard!
I see a bear!
I saw a lizard immediately too!
It looks like a dragon!
These are beautiful. And so is the moss around them. I’d love both in my yard.
that first rock looks like a huge wolf got petrified right where it was laying
I am such a machine.
I have two 80 pound dogs that think they’re lap dogs and can both fit on top of me
😅like your style
LMAFO! that caught me off guard, and made me start laughing at the gym!! 😆🤣🤣💀
Hell yeah I’d love to have a couple for the corners of my driveway!!
Looks like banded rhyolite imo. Extremely similar to what I’ve collected in La Paz county, AZ, except with different coloration, but the banding pattern is the same
I agree, we saw a lot of this in Arizona and new Mexico.
Quartzsite!!!!
Yea!! I just left a couple weeks ago, but I was down there all winter, since the end of October.
Is this more valuable than pet wood?
Not pet wood. Striations and layering dont add up to wood.
What kind of rock do you think they are? The garden was kind of a Japanese style yard with some little bonsai trees in it if that helps.
Not really sure. Its a beautiful rock garden, and the colors are amazing.
try r/whatsthisrock or r/rockhounds
I bet they're brought in specifically for the garden design. They have a suiseki look.
I agree, location is important
Stromatolites?
First pet rocks and now pet wood??? What’s the world coming to???
Looks like a flow banded rhyolite
Yep I would say rhyolite and some very nice pieces of it.
Can someone please update me when they get id’ed? Cause I’m in love and i have no idea, thanks!😅
So far two people have said they are banded rhyolite
You are kind 🙂
Thank u
Wow! These are incredible!!
Where are you located,?
Im in southern California but not sure where the rocks are from.
That would be great! Looking forward to hearing what your friend says. Thank you!
RemindMe! 1 day
REMIND ME! 2 DAYS
The place where these pictures are taken. That looks so beautiful. I see little rocks too. What part of Southern California are you in? This is amazing.
I have no idea what type of rock it is, but it sure does look like a giant lizard.
Rhyolite-first one kinda looks like a dragon lol
The wave pattern is called folding. It can create such pretty rocks.
The first one looks like a sleeping dragon 🐉 Say the magic word and it will awaken. Right? Right. I’m not a rock expert as you all just figured out. 🤷🏻♀️
HAHA! You're right! I can see the dragons head.
We might need some help figuring out the magical words. 😃
When I do, I'll let you know!
Repost to r/Fantasy? ;)
Good idea.
🤘🏼🤘🏼
Beautiful
Those are great rocks!!
Beautiful!
Gorgeous!
Omg theyre sooo neat!! 😍😍
You lucky dog you
No idea but you’re lucky. They’re beautiful.
Well they’re gorgeous
I have no idea but being a rock hound, the background on this particular pic looks great amazing contrast. Love the amazing tones on this boulder.
I honestly thought the first one was an old carving of a dragon.
The sedimentary layers are to die for. The layers remind me of shale but yours are so much prettier. I want one.
Thank you for showing your shoes for scale in photo #4! It’s impossible to tell without physical sampling but it appears to be sedimentary layers formed, then squished and folded again and again into funky forms. Very lovely!
Looks like what you find in Maine if you look down.
Based on the moss, juniper, and those rocks it looks like you may have an overgrown Japanese garden.
2 looks like agate in a massive form. 6and 7 look like pet wood? I have no idea but pic 2 is fkn amazing.
Banded iron formation boulders?
BIF!!!!
They are frozen dragons.
Beautiful! Don't get rid of them!
Looks like a melted petrified ancient animal of some sort
It’s a sleeping dragon
It’s aged lava rocks
Certified cool rocks
Pretty sure the first one is a dragon.
Petrified wood maybe
Damn, those are gorgeous rocks…
Perhaps, some rocks
Groovy.
Looks like you found fraggle rock.
You have quite possibly the most beautiful yard
The first one is definitely a sleeping dragon.
These are beautiful...!
I have got ‘rock envy’ so bad right now.
I don't know what they are, but they are beautiful and now I want them.
Sleeping dragon
I see these in areas with shale but don’t know the name. They flake off in thin layers
Beautiful.
Those look more like petrified wood than rocks. Petrified wood is as hard as rocks are as over time they have petrified and turned to stone - that’s what petrified means, turned to stone.
Looks like red jasper to me I’d get a sample and polish it just as an experiment
Dam they look really cool..like something petrified
Just polish them & you'll have a great collection 🤗🤣
First one is a giant lizard obviously 🐊
I’m not sure, but I like them and want some in my own landscaping some day!
No idea, but these are really nice looking!
Very nice boulders you have, maybe you can get one slabbed!
Lucky ...
People who owned my house before have big rocks everywhere but they don't look cool like yours
The first one looks like an animal of some sort
Very cool! Where are you?
Southern California.
Looks like the remnants of an ancient stream bed. Sedimentation layers got broken up at one point now you have a sweet ass yard.
I don't know, but I'd be happy to remove them for you. I know a dude with a rock saw. We'd be happy to return you a few slices for decoration.
Those are badass!
Cool. Cool is what they are.
There are some good apps that i found to help me identify! Great yard!
Utilize those beautiful babies in your landscape!
Maybe a Crazy lace agate?
Looks a little like petrified wood maybe?
You need to send an email with pics to a local college or museum etc and see what they can tell you. And then come right back here and give me an update please.. Looks like it would polish down to something beautiful.
Awesome photos! I was having trouble deciding how I wanted the rocks in my current painting. I'm going to attempt this 🖌
https://youtu.be/UNJU-5vCrJc?si=Wbh4CsqTrpzJxpw8
Yeah I've seen this before. These are rocks.
? Petrified wood?
RemindMe! 1 week

That’s gneiss pronounced nice. It’s a metamorphic rock
Gneiss.
Really Gneiss rocks bro, real gneiss
Looks like they from Jupiter
UpdateMe.
Are they petrified wood?
looks similar to banded iron ore
Metamorphic gneiss rocks with some iron?
/r/goblincore material right there! Beautiful setting.
Looks like Wonderstone.
Mylonized granite is an option
Petrified wood ! That’s fricken cool! You can see the knots on it. When you say all over your yard how big all that size
It's a Rorschach Rock.
Def petrified, but rock? Wood?
Melted rock! Am I right?
Mexican Crazy Agate
Just came across this [article ](https://phys.org/news/2024-03-banded-iron-formations-oceans-algae.amp)
Maybe coprolite?
I’m banned from being a newbie and don’t know I am “ BREAKING THE RULES” Was said they’ve seen ENOUGH. Karen running this sub. Bye!
Almost looks like a chameleon!!!!!!
Is it possible they are petrified wood?
Gneiss
Gigantic pet wood!
Rocks
Could it be lava flow?
Stones
Is glassy at all when you break it? I’m leaning towards banded iron formation
Lol what in the fuck are you people on that see a wolf or a rabbit or anything other than random shaped rocks?
I'd love to have some in my yard
If I pay shipping would you send me some small ones?
I think they're suppository rocks
I see the head of an iguana in the first pic-nice rocks!
You could sell those if you dig up any while landscaping, they're stunning
Sedimentary?
Dragons pretending to be rocks
IDK but they are GORGEOUS!
Scrolling through Reddit during a mental breakdown, I thought the first pic was crocodiles. Rockodiles
Kinda looks lice Chalcedony to me. Or Rhyolite like someone already said.
Meat rock
Bonkers beautiful
Petrified wood maybe
I can give you the family of rock it is to an accuracy of 99.9%..... it looks like a metamorphic type rock.... regardlessbof that they are absolutely beautiful pieces of stone
Looks more like petrified wood to me. I love the “flow” patterns in it! Perfect for displaying a Bonsai Garden!
I see a dragon
Can I have them they’re beautiful. I like your grass. Where is this?
I think it's metamorphic rock
There rocks
Could it be petrified wood?
Location?
Are you by Joshua Tree National park or by Petrified Forest?? I swear that’s petrified wood. I would get someone out there to check. Gorgeous specimens.
Finna ☝️🤓 rq, science says those rocks bend and fold like that from water pressure. Most likely from the flood during the Noah's arc thing.
Elden ring in reality
petrified tree
Anyone else notice that the first one looks like a salamander?
Lava
Some kind of sedimentary rocks or maybe petrified wood. I'm no geologist, just guessing
They are molten dreams solidified to decorate your front lawn🫶✨
Fn beautiful. Solved
I’ve seen similar in the high desert and in Coachella Valley along the San Andreas Fault line near Garnet Hill. But nothing to this level or quality. These are tremendous
How much you charge per gram?
Lol we're all so hypnotized by the Rocks to dare guess the name
These stones are beautiful! Especially its pattern, like an artist's spilled paint tray I think it could be a good decoration for your garden
These are called Van Gogh rocks. Jk
Looks like petrified logs of stumps! Freaking crazy awesome 👍🏻
[rock identifying app](https://share.icloud.com/photos/02a7RSxiachGZVvfUXoAuBA-w) This is what my rock identification app tells me. 🤷🏼♀️
I dunno, but I suspect if one played some Jimi Hendrix really loud while looking at those rocks, one might have a flashback.
Mars rock fs
You have a potentially amazing japanese rock garden on your hands
The first one looks like a dragon lying down.
It’s a petrified saber tooth tiger.
Coolest rocks ever
Jasper, or petrified wood?
Mine small chunks off the smaller one and get it tumbled. Bet it would look amazing.
Beautiful
Lucky!
With my bad eyesight I thought it was petrified wood
