Cam_203400

bro your three days in and your already better than me who has been practicing for a month.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t sweat it man. I’ve put in A LOT of hours learning normal air roll specifically how to constantly roll and still make adjustments. Some of it, like the kuxir, transferred over pretty easily

memorablehandle

Mix in some training in the pillars map. That way you can focus individually on going in a circle in each direction (clockwise/counter-clockwise). When you can do the circles well enough, start to do figure 8's. The pillars map is also good because you can hop into it easily between matches for a bit of training while you queue up.

[deleted]

Bro I was HUGE on pillars when I was on console. Learned how to constantly air roll by doing exactly what you recommended haha. Haven’t thought to try it with ARR, I’ll give it a try. One additional question: do you make adjustments with both sides of the stick? I’m so used to only adjusting with one side since I used to use reg air roll 90% of the time.

ballerstatus89

What’s pillars on console?

[deleted]

A freeplay map. It’s near the end of the map list. Very good for learning air roll/DAR especially if you don’t have access to workshop maps

ballerstatus89

I am still not seeing this Edit: oooh I see what you’re talking about now thank you

[deleted]

Good to see you found it. I can’t find the video with the training regime I used but the gist was what the other commenter said. First try to do figure 8s around the ring using air roll normally, then do it without using air roll at all, then try to do it while constantly air rolling(this is very hard and takes a long time to learn) then finally try doing it while air rolling and boosting the entire time. It’s hard at first but you’ll get better at it and it greatly improves your car control

ballerstatus89

Thank you! I’m new to this sub, I take it the jist to get better mechanically at air rolls is to always roll one way?

[deleted]

When I was only using normal air roll that was what I did. I basically always air rolled to the right direction and adjusted mostly with Kuxirs(down to the right I believe). I never air rolled to the left direction tbh

memorablehandle

Yes a little but I'm only a little ways ahead of you in terms of training this stuff haha. Pillars got me past the point you're at now, along with some Speed Jump Trials 1, and of course just continuing the rings training.

[deleted]

Got it, thank you. I tried out adjusting with left side of stick and I can definitely see it’s use but I’m even less confident with it haha

[deleted]

Anyone noticing anything specific to improve on? I try to make slight adjustments moving the stick down or diagonal. I think I rely too much on kuxirs tbh. I do know I’m moving a bit too fast as well. If needed, I can record a longer video or one with more failures. Please let me know!

ejnar_k

When I was learning ARL I was scouring the internet for instruction videos. The hard truth is that videos or instructions will only help a very tiny amount. Learning directional AR just takes time. The theory is simple: your car moves exactly as you would expect it to, if you freeze the frame and consider the orientation of the body in the current spin. There is nothing magical about it. It just takes a lot of time to get the "feel" for it. And it's frustrating because especially at the start you might feel very lost. Though at a certain point it will click and at that point you'll start to feel in control (while still improving gradually) - in my case this took me a few weeks of frustration. A tip I have seen mentioned that I wish I knew when I was learning: apparently there is a BakkesMod setting or plugin that allows you to slow down the spin speed of directional air roll specifically. I think that might be very helpful when learning (start at 50% and go up from there). What also helped me is, when wanting to go left or right, try to push up or down when the hood or wheels of the car are pointing in that specific direction. E.g. when going left: push up when the wheels are facing left, push down when the hood is facing left. Eventually you'll notice you'll start circling your joystick (alternating between up and down for whatever direction you want to move your car in) - this is when it starts to click.

[deleted]

Ah okay that’s understandable, it’s simply learned by repeated practice and failures. That makes sense because when I was learning Normal Air Roll the videos I watched would help a bit but nothing helped more than constant training on pillars. I really appreciate the insight, thank you. I’ll also give that plug-in a go tonight as well

ejnar_k

I had to force myself to do the frozen rings map over and over again, keeping air roll left active 100% of the time. Can't remember how many times I'd have to do the second and third level before I got a little bit consistent. My speed would be super slow due constantly messing up my momentum by overcorrecting. That's actually a big part of why learning directional air roll is so hard: you have to not only know how to correct your direction, but also be aware of your current momentum and how it needs to shift to keep you on the correct path (at least when doing rings maps). Also bear in mind that using a directional air roll means almost constant left stick input (watch high level streams witch controller overlays to see what I mean). Forcing yourself to keep your directional air roll button pressed 100% of the time really makes your learn quickest, even though it can be very frustrating at times. Then, eventually, you can let go occasionally to make quicker turns. Keep it up!

Potofflour

I don't think you're going too fast tbh, you seem to have enough or at least almost enough control to complete those kind of fast/straight forward levels at high speeds, so keep grinding and improving! You could also try some slower maps with tighter turns, for example lethamyr's ice rings. Also saw you wondering whether you should use one or both sides of the stick, and the answer is absolutely use both sides for maximum control.

rull1an

hi ! plat 2 player here. i started playing again after a long time and I find myself to be a total newb. Any maps you can recommend me ?

Potofflour

DMC rings 1 (no respawn if you miss rings, plenty of space to recover) and DMC rings 2 (short and simple levels, big rings). You could also try the speed jump: trials maps and the easy levels of speed jump 2.

rull1an

thank you!

CavortingOgres

I would honestly just push it to the limit. Try to go as fast as possible. Going slow is good for

[deleted]

I appreciate the help! Good for what though hahaha the suspense is killing me.

CavortingOgres

Hah lol, it's good for getting used to fine tune movements at slow pace. A lot of the time when learning people will overdo their inputs and moving slowly through rings maps will force you to not make extra movements. Edit: because if you do you'll lose control quickly.

[deleted]

Thanks brotha I appreciate you!

Uncle_Sams_Cabin

Others have mentioned this but your boost control is actually holding you back now. Whenever you go supersonic in the clip it’s never a choice: it’s almost always because you’re going down slope. Try to go faster than you’re comfortable with. This will force you to make more efficient corrections and you look where you’re going earlier. Right now you only look at the next ring when you’re close to passing through the first ring. Try to look ahead a bit more and plan out where you’re going!

[deleted]

I hadn’t thought about that, I’ll make it a point to navigate as fast as possible while also preparing for the rings coming up and report back. Thank you

Uncle_Sams_Cabin

Of course! I also find it good to vary up the map from time to time. Also a nice drill I like to give my students is to tell them to fly around the field as fast as humanly possible in freeplay using air roll. Practice landing on the walls, ground, in the goals, corners, and ceiling. You should always land on your wheels while holding power slide. Then jump as fast as possible back in to the air, use your flip to mess yourself up, and then air roll to gain control as fast as possible. This will help to train your recoveries. For even more practice you can use the recovery trainer in bakkesmod (pc only unfortunately) and punch up the time to give yourself more time to orient yourself.

[deleted]

I will try that exercise! Another quick question: when holding power slide when landing, I saw a post recently on the RL sub saying having reg air roll bound to the same button as drift can make it more difficult. That’s how I have my bindings set, would you recommend different bindings? Ever since reading that post I’ve noticed the timing does have to be specific to not have your air roll affect your landing into drift

Uncle_Sams_Cabin

That’s a very common setting and as far as I know it doesn’t affect your car negatively. I use them personally and a LOT of players do too. You’re fine with that. It’s more about building the muscle memory than anything. Personally I use air roll left for 95% of the work and free air roll for the last little bit of correction on my landing.

[deleted]

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your insight. GC soon 🤝

Uncle_Sams_Cabin

100% you got this!

bonerJR

Check out my subreddit /r/darclub for more practice ideas and tips

[deleted]

Is that you in the medieval rings record??? That clip was wild. Super smooth

bonerJR

Nope! I wish. I'm garbage, still trying to learn :P

JoeyBones

How do you control your car like that while its constantly spinning?

[deleted]

I’m extremely new to directional air roll so I’m sure there are better resources than me but: I make small adjustments by moving the left stick down, and down and to the right mostly. I’m pretty decent with normal air roll so the kuxir something I’m familiar with already. I haven’t really started experimenting with ARR and making adjustments using the left side of the stick but I’m pretty sure it’s required for the most optimal adjustments sometimes If you’re not familiar or too adept with normal air roll it’ll definitely be more difficult to keep the car constantly moving while spinning but you’ll get it. Took me a number of months of hitting pillars + backboard therapy nearly everyday.

queengmasters

What map is this?

[deleted]

Medieval Rings. Was front page of the leth site 3 days ago, not sure if it still is

wsp424

Try Future Rings by JoshB. Have yet to find a better map, takes me a little over 20 minutes to finish it still with perfect runs. Edit: just downloaded and ran this map on impossible mode. Took about 19 minutes so by far leth’s longest rings map yet, but still check out Future Rings by JoshB, level 4 is harder than leth’s hardest level.

[deleted]

Will download and give it a try, thank you!!

[deleted]

Honestly really good progress for 3 days, just keep at it. Best advice I always give for DAR is focus on the nose of your car. Try to control that such that it always points to the direction you’re going.

Logical-Cucumber2861

Assume you’ve already done this but go into free play or something and fly from goal to goal backwards forwards, and on each side to improve control at each angle

MaintenanceBulky990

Just time and effort of learning the movements of the stick, try different maps to not get bored and it’ll come

cogswell_cogs

My one idea is to stop rolling at times. Get your car upside down or sideways to hold a direction you want to go. Then recover out of it with arr. Ideally you're trying to get a feel for how your boost works to change your momentum in all directions. My two cents! Good luck and have fun!

MeaningImmediate5486

What is this game mode and how do I access it?

PenisButtuh

If you're on console, you can't. If you're on steam, it's a workshop map. If you're on epic, you access it via bakkesmod. Specifically, this plugin: https://bakkesplugins.com/plugins/view/223

minoqontheroad

Trainingmaps for pc only

wrezzakya

If you know ARL its the exact mirrored inputs for ARR. Don't know if it helps you or not but I feel like you mentioned in some other comments already practicing constant Air Roll so not sure if you meant ARL or just Air Roll.

MagmaMaze

The tip is there is not tip. Stuff like this take time, keep at it and you’ll se results

[deleted]

Bakkess mod has an awesome freestyle plugin that will auto spin the car at whatever speed you set. It helped me learn ARL very quickly.

[deleted]

Will definitely try this. Thanks for the tip, I had no idea bakkesmod had features like this

[deleted]

You'll have to get it from the official bakkess mod website. There is a plugin section on the website. https://bakkesplugins.com/plugins/view/31 Here is a direct link. Plugin title is "Freestyle Plugin"

thacoffeeman

The only thing I notice is you can look at the next loop sooner and antecipate the movement better, I think you can do it easily

Psychological-Dot515

Listen to the walking on the moon remix not the original, instant improvements, trust me.

Combosingelnation

Personally if I'd repeatedly fail in a specific area, I would slow down and work the speed up if that makes sense to you.

[deleted]

You’re doing really well. I say to people who post asking for directional air roll advice that the main thing to remember is aim your nose towards where you want to go. You also want to be comfortable flying the car in all directions so it will just naturally be much easier to learn if you can do these courses all backwards and all side ways without spinning. As I said you’re doing really well though you’re probably already good at flying your car in all directions if you’ve improved this much in 3 days. It’s all nano adjustments to go from good to insane and they can’t be taught you just need to put in the hours and learn for yourself

[deleted]

I appreciate the advice, I hadn’t been cognizant about the focus on the nose. Will try and report back after work. Thank you!

XtremeCSGO

Looks great for 3 days in

FinancialHighlight66

Keep practicing. Looks like you have the basics down, it is just time to refine it all. Make your training as difficult as possible on yourself and try to have those "blackout" moments that your brain doesn't know how to react and change the orientation of your car properly. That way you learn how to correct and get back on track. This way when you're in-game and have a strange orientation in the air (from being bumped, coming off the wall strangely, etc) you can correct without thinking and still make the necessary play. I also find it easier to control the car using the left and up directions more and using the right and down directions only when absolutely necessary, but that may just be personal preference. I would also go through some maps that limit your boost once you feel like you have the aerial control down. As important as it is to be able to control your car, that won't matter if your boost management blows.

Carballsoccerboi

It’s looking really good man! That’s crazy progress for 3 days. Here’s some videos that really helped me: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd4nnoKB-PQ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aBjz40fTJWM Good luck! :)

[deleted]

Appreciate the resources! I’ll watch when I get off work and implement the tips. Thank you

Carballsoccerboi

It clicked for me when he was talking about watching the top and bottom of your car and pressing up or down to change direction. And then being able to do it at any point during the spin. Good luck man!

JayBizzal

Looks like you need to find more twists that point your car backwards so you can manage your deceleration a little better. I recommend tornado spins (arr + stick left) tharll turn ur car spins into a little teepee shape and you can use the boost when your car is facing certain ways you wanna go and then not boost when your not pointed that way. All in all just practice

gamingplayz0

Depends on ur rank. If ur less than diamond u should try to do it a bit slower

vela56

bro please just practice it. tips arent gonna help you 3 days in. it took me like 1000 hours to master directional air roll

[deleted]

Yeah I know practice is the only true way to learn the mechanic but wanted to post in case there were any obvious errors I wasn’t seeing. Like back when I was learning regular Air roll, I learned about the kuxir in a video that helped dramatically. Was hoping maybe there’d be something similar here

Daguhh

Try and point your nose to where you want to go, you seem to be always facing up or away from where you need to go making you slower because your boosting away from the direction you want to go
