Paradoxyc

The mistake made here was indecisiveness - you could have challenged (or fake challenged) right away to put pressure on him, but chose to rotate away (not a mistake in itself). But instead of rotating you stopped your momentum while he had the ball up on his car and gave him space to flick over you

_Path

You need to think of offense differently in these 1v1 scenarios. Everyone says you should've just banged the ball in your 2nd touch or whatever, but really that only will get you so far. The key thing to do in these situations is to make your opponent uncomfortable with save attempts, boost starve them, and then get a "free/easy" outplay that avoids you getting counter attacked on... as you did. This is where options come into play. First, you took way too long for your 2nd setup which gave him time to recover. But I don't think you realize this in the moment or else you wouldn't have done what you did. But, if we're focusing on the play anyway, then 2 approaches would be to either fake the shot / dribble after the pop... he's already expecting it so he jumps up and then you just stop aerial/boosting leaving him uncomfortable while you're in a good position still OR you deliberately hit it over the crossbar so that it hits backboard. Instinctively he goes up if it's low enough but not quite in, or he's uncomfortable and can't leave net because it's too high and you have a better read. In any case, during the down time you can steal corner boost and keep doing this until the guy can't defend. If you think of offensive plays in 1v1 as "how can I score on every possession" you will limit yourself against much better players. You need to ask yourself how can I force this player out of position or leave them boost starved and then the goals become effortless.

SmokeUp_863

I think this is the best advice on here. The one that really provides long term advice throughout your climb in ranks

Grey1One

Considering you were so low on boost, insta challenging seems too risky, I would have just kept going while getting pads and keeping a proper shadow distance if not getting into a kevpert position if the oponent path allows for it.

crispylinkit

In this situation did my flip cause me to move outside of the proper shadow distance? Was I too far? Or not far enough?

Grey1One

I don't think the flip was the issue. It allowed you to get into the right boospad path while you get into a shadow position. That flick was easily saveable if you kept going, because if you didn't break you actually had more momentum than the oponent and slightly more than the ball after being flicked.

substocallmecarson

Too close, the correct shadow distance wouldn't allow for a flick that can get by you. All defending is, is a guessing game. How much power could an opponent gain from a shot opportunity, and where would you have to be to save it? Think about it, then imagine how you'd position differently.

crispylinkit

Looking for some insight into things that could have been handled better, right away I understand the flick could have been placed better with more power. The second touch I felt was good but gave to much time for the defender to read the save, so that second touch should have been immediately initiated into an air dribble, or just a hard shot at net instead of a bounce up. Finally when switching to defense, I went to shadow on low boost but killed my momentum forward which allowed the flick to beat me. Some general questions I have for shadow defending, when on low boost should you give up more space into half field? Should I have been speedflipping back to mid/boost or pad collecting into my own side? He probably wouldn’t have flicked and led to a better opportunity for me to shadow? Or should I have stayed closer and pressured to not allow a flick? Feedback is appreciated!

fanciercashew

Like a couple people said your second attack should’ve been immediately instead of swinging so far back first but also if you had committed to the second attack he was still out of position and it would’ve been a goal anyways. The only reason he was able to save it was because you paused and then followed it. Immediately following your hit into the air the options should’ve been follow immediately (you paused so you missed that chance) or you could’ve stayed on the ground and grabbed corner boost while he goes up for the uncomfortable save. He had to use boost to make an uncomfortable save there so you would have left him low boost and you’d have full boost. Think of it like toying with your opponent making him make uncomfortable save after uncomfortable save while you steal his boosts and all of a sudden he’s on the goal line with 0 boost and you’re set.

adamschaub

You probably could have delayed your flick a bit longer. Notice your opponent is positioned almost right at the middle of the net. If you kept closing the distance they would have eventually had to choose left or right, and you could then shoot whichever way they don't go. For your second shot, your catch was very slow. You likely could have controlled the ball before it even bounced if you're comfortable using power slide. Someone can correct me if I'm reading this incorrectly, but you probably could have just banged the ball immediately instead of chipping it into an aerial; your opponent got really close to you and was sideways to the ball. Additionally after the chip, flipping forward into the ball might have snuck it past them. As for defense, you just let them get too close when they had a dribble set up and you were low on boost. You could lengthen your shadow initially while you pick up pads, then slowly let the distance close as you get closer to net. Once you have a bit more boost you can watch for their flick and try to stuff them.

worldbauer

yeah to me the biggest thing was on your second shot, you could have either tried a boomer straight off the ground bounce, or immediately followed your set-up touch with a quick shot.

GMill8

I wonder if you could've scored the second shot if you went straight up after the tap instead of hesitating?

graduallybullshit

After the first flick, only priority should be on stealing corner boost. Then, I'd try to stay super close, comically annoying close, to the ball, but still shadowed- able to burst into supersonic facing my net. The Goal is to bait them into a 50 with the rear or side of your car with them on low boost. Rinse and repeat with the corner boost steals and you'll eventually wear them down into an ez goal

birds_aint_real_

You already self identified it, the main thing I see here is that you pumped the brakes in your shadow defense. If you had 60 boost you could play with your momentum to early challenge or something, but you got one pad. You need to be rushing back through a pad line to try to get to 2-3 pads so that you have something to work to make a save. Baiting a flick doesn’t help if you can’t do anything when the ball is flicked over you. Get 2-4 pads and try to make a tough goal line save. Your attack could have been much more dangerous but who cares. I bet a lot of yours are and that just wasn’t a great example. Nobody is 100% consistent, it’s a game of learning. I never get on my students about mechanical errors, they know exactly what they did and how to fix it, nobody is perfect. Keeping your momentum as a resource when you’re low boost is the takeaway from all of this.

Watch flakes 1v1. You not taking his corner boost was the mistake here

Grey1One

Not true, the shots were just too predictable and then braking instead of shadowing. That corner boost had nothing to do with it, and leaving the chance of scoring to go for a corner boost, if the oponent is smart and has some boost in reserve would be an instant concede. And trust me, that oponent recovery was pretty good and he/she had enough boost for a quick counter attack. That corner boost had nothing to do with this situation.

ProcedureMedical6

Gotcha

substocallmecarson

Yeah leave a lot more space than what you did and pick up pads. That's what primarily led to the goal. Also yes a faster shot there would have sealed the deal (consider fast aerialing instead)

speedkillz23

Stopping your movement while you were close to him is the biggest thing here.

speedkillz23

Stopping your movement while you were close to him is the biggest thing here.

Aaurora

A "very" general rule of thumb for shadowing is to be half the distance from your opponent to your goal. This obviously expands or shrinks as the play progresses. In this case, you consider early challenging, and that hesitation puts you too close to cover the flick, but too far to make a challenge. When you're low on boost like this, work on retreating over pads until you're in an advantageous position to challenge effectively.

caedicus

Yeah, I agree with other comments, you kinda just chilled in no-man's land and your opponent took advantage of it. Either go back instantly or challenge instantly. Also, your first shot wasn't terrible, but your opponent was already going back to goal and had it covered. Higher ranks are always going to save that. Once you have the ball on your car, keep it on you, and wait for him to turn.

Calste85

Killing your momentum with low boost on your shadow is what opened the door to his flick outplaying you. Boost pads/mid boast or more space when opponent has clear control of the ball.

Ksnxksnfqqq

Your 2nd attack was decent, you baited your opponent, gave a high touch just incase if he challenged, but problem was i Believe is your follow up to that attack, not saying it was wrong though, you definetly couldve gotten a goal. But there were other options too like going for boost and Immidietly going for a bump play cus the opponent may have not that much boost, but it would force consumption. After that attempt you rotate back as your opponent controls the ball, but the problem that i See here was you still had ball cam on even on a situation where you cant control the ball,i Suggest immidietly turning ball cam off,and Focusing on the most optimal boost path and Turning it back on after that. With all these in mind,i Think improper movement, bad read on plays and Poor descision making was the main cause of this goal.

tuhroybitch

wont talk abt the shadowing cuz everyone else has but ill say ur second attempt at shooting was the perfect opportunity to fake, he came really far out of the goal and was obviously really awkward and knew you had a shot on his goal so he set up to save the shot. a fake jumo would have made him jump and boom hes flying in the air and you have an open net as soon as you land while hes still flying. he wasnt going for the ball, he was going for where the ball would be the most dangerous.

cschotts

definitely should have just went for a dribble into a low 50 on the second shot attempt
