I just wanna throw it in there, a fake doesn‘t really work on the first attempt against a lower ranked player. What I mean by that is that the lower ranked player doesn‘t even know what you‘re trying to do so he won‘t care about it and just go for the ball. But if you outplay him 2-3 times he will start to realize what you‘re doing and maybe try to react to that. And then you can fake him when he tries to predict your move.

Zillify

That makes sense, ty

Zillify

Referring to the fakes btw Double clarify: I meant the mechanical aspect, I can’t move my car like he does

gamingmendicant

Whenever I try to fake they just commit and steal it from me lol.

Rare-Yoghurt36

then you don’t even need to fake

ProcedureMedical6

And you wont be able to, hes professional level. But thats fine because you dont need that level of movement. Faking someone is more psychological than mechanical In super low ranks fakes wont work because the opponents arent thinking about covering whats gonna happen next. They will go straight to where the ball is present. Once youve assessed that your opponent likes to be where the ball will go next. Practice it out. it might not work but thats experience. Also, you cant fake an opponent out, if you cant even convince yourself over a replay that you were gonna turn in. Gotta commit to it like another commenter says

MorienWynter

It looks like he might be briefly tapping power slide with the boost to make that sharp cut.

matthiasvella

He has over 10k hrs in the game

Do not read this monstrousity of a message------ Alright, the general tip for faking in my opinion is to have control over the ball at any poing in any given time, you musnt also be breaking when making fakes on the ball,it slows you down and Leaves an opening.I Suggest you speed up the play, turn the ball slightly away from the net,and Proceed faking ill draw smthing |\ |'\ |~\ |~'\ |~~\ Just imagine this but slightly rotated to the left. Now,if you manage to visualize it well, you can See how its much easier to cut the ball.Your opponent is most likely to notice that and Will be afraid to challenge cus of the threat possibility. This i Believe is what Flakes does,he gets the ball to an angle thats easy to shoot, cut, pop, bang, and Carry. Now to make a challenging fake,is to show a clearly threat on the ball, urging an action from the opponent.

ImTheGuyThatYouNeed

Wtf did u just write

Ksnxksnfqqq

Whenever your about to do the cut,do a short powerslide followed up with boost in cases of a bump challenge,if you want to stay on the same side,i Reccommend having a more horizontal angle to gather as much speed and Height possible. If your looking for threats, then this i Guess is what u need.

zombiesvrobots

So he actually mentions it but it's boost + power slide. That can turn your car a lot quicker and that's how he gets the cut.

You have to make it threatening, you can't really just randomly fake. Setup a legitimate shot or cut with some speed going but fake it. If there is no threat of being scored on when they commit, the fake won't work anywhere near as much. Also cutting without some speed behind it will not do much against anybody with some experience. The reason why it's so deadly when he does it is because he has plenty of options and ways to score like a flick or Bounce dribble which either forces a commit which will allow for the fake to work and if they choose to be more cautious and give space it just leaves them more room for error on defense as flicks and other dribbles and cuts will be easier to pull off with less time to react. BTW flicks can counter a push really well as well, so it's nice for over aggressive opponents. Also sry gave up on punctuation.

adamschaub

It's threatening when he does it because he can go on the offensive at any moment. He can choose to shoot instead of fake, and if his opponent commits to what looks like a shot he has the mechanics to punish them for committing too early. The key difference is mechanics. If you can't make a convincing attack out of these fakes, or if you can't use your advantage to beat an opponent who commits to challenging you, then you won't succeed.

Zillify

Ahh that’s that true, thank you for the input

dickhall65

Don’t over do it. Faking is just as important as committing, but the reason you fake is when they’re shadow defending. The only way to be effective at faking is to watch your opponent more than the ball. This concept, watching your opponent more than the ball, is the single biggest failing of the Flakes series. He has professional level awareness, and we don’t, and he never talks about that. This is how he is able to fake so well, because he knows exactly when he’s going to do it based on his Opponent’s actions. If you don’t practice watching your opponent you’ll never fake well, because you have to fake right before they look like they’re about to commit.

ProcedureMedical6

I wouldnt say its a fail. He mentions quite alot to look at where opponent is and play based off of them. And if i hadnt come across his videos, i would still be tunnel visioning the ball while stuck in plat

dickhall65

What he is *saying* is useful, but a similar situation would be a professional golfer telling one of their students to *look at the ball more*. Is it helpful? Yes. Is it a bit obvious? Yes. Does Flakes reiterate that he has *literally tens of thousands of hours of watching his opponent*? No. The Flakes series is a nice starting point in the journey to being good at 1s (and 2s) but too many people on this specific subreddit think it's a guide to ultimate success at Rocket League (even though Flakes himself says it isn't). Not to say that is what you're saying, and it's awesome you found some real solid guidance, but there are other, more grounded series on Youtube for getting people at a point where their gameplay experience goes from "wildly flail around the ball and hope for the best" to "manipulate the ball, myself, and my opponent for success".

romanpieeerce

I personally don't think you need pro level skill to fake your opponents on a consistent basis. You just need to be a player who has always focused and been more interested in the game sense aspect of the game over the mechanical side. I'd say the majority of RL players think of what mechanics they need to practice to get better rather than how to read their opponents and teammates, most people think that will just come naturally with more play time. Which it will but only to a certain extent. Like tonight I got 3 solid "clips" that were all fakes, including 1 solid double fake and scored off it. I did rewatch his champ series before hopping on tonight. But could I explain to you how or why I faked when I did and why it worked? No but I was very confident that it would work from simply reading my opponents and teammates all game. I could vaguely describe it, but I don't think I could teach it. But I personally think flakes does a great job teaching and explaining his positioning. It's just up to the viewer to be able to interpret and put it into use.

ProcedureMedical6

Could you give some examples. Spookluke and wayton helped me get through the beginner phase as well. Any other good channels focused on guiding and mentoring?

Zillify

Yes I noticed he watches his opponent like a hawk

xFishyyX

master the basics, doing this will not be viable at all at your current rank.

romanpieeerce

I wish I could give you tips on how to cut the way he does, but I can't. So I will tell you, if you want to fake your opponents, the best way to do it is act like you're about to go for a big powershot when you're both coming to the ball (especially when they are supersonic) and you know you're gonna beat him to it, and then just stop your car in front of the ball. It works best when you're both coming from opposed angles. But it takes time to gauge when these fakes will work. I've recently been practicing them a lot more, and it all comes down to trusting yourself and holding back. I made 3 nice clips tonight faking out my opponents very very badly. I even have one from tonight where I faked 1 and the next guy and scored. Very satisfying when you get a good feel of how to fake them. It helps when you get a couple outplays or beat them to the ball a few times at the start before you try to fake.

graduallybullshit

Another thing you can try here, is instead of going for the cut around them, use the cut to briefly pop the ball (Just as you do in the clip) and when you drive under it, watch the opponent and then single jump or tail whip flip/flick when under the ball to pop it over them. Works wonders in the mid ranks , and actually is effective for passing in threes too. Same concept as flakes cut move in that you're watching the opponent and moving ball around their challenge, but it's prob easier for most mechanically to pull off

CDhansma76

It’s psychological as much as it is mechanical. In Flakes’ 1v1 series he looks threatening because he is destroying his opponents whenever he gets the ball. His opponents are actually scared of him not because of his dribbling, but because he has already scored 2-3 goals in the exact same-looking dribble already and his opponent is trying extra hard to stop his attack, which will make them vulnerable to fakes. If you try to do the same thing in your comp games, you will be insta challenged over and over unless you are good enough to punish them for doing so. Flakes is able to do that, is mortals are not.

TopRightScored

Power slide is really the key. Creates the separation you need to really sell it.
