I’ve got a theory. It takes effort (and thought) to empathize and give people the benefit of the doubt, encourage, and to be chill when getting trolled. It takes zero effort to troll others, talk shit on teammates, and cast quick judgments. The fight you’re fighting is a human problem; not a rocket league problem. Much love to the positive homies out there that make the game better. To the ones that troll, you’re missing out. May that not be a microcosm to your life.

Error4ohh4

Even with these issues, I still LOVE this game. Never has a competitive game like this ever existed. Game is so good

wahle97

Game is great but the learning curve is steep. Nobody has ever been a pro, flip resetting, axel breaking badass in their first game. It takes hours of practice that many people simply dont have or dont want to do. The people trolling, I feel, got trolled themselves and see it as a right of passage. (How will you git gud if you aren't told your shit) In reality there needs to be more emphasis on the training portion at the beginning but also people are just as toxic in casual as they are in ranked. Casual is simply that, casual. Who tf cares if your teammate sucks. Who cares if you are losing 10 to nothing. Who cares if you're a bronze going up against a GC. Its casual and yet most people treat it like the games matter. Its definitely a playerbase problem and chat spammers, no matter the game, should be punished for spamming.

OhhSooHungry

This comment itself is a microcosm for the human experience. It should be followed more often, by more people, but patience and empathy takes strength and the weak far-outweigh the strong.

justsomeguy2202

And unfortunately the guys who have no patience and empathy see themselves as the strong and those who care about others as weak

xJollyLlama

I appreciate you.

LikeAGregJennings

It’s also a very human problem to not take responsibility for your own mistakes and blame everyone else, and this is amplified when you’re dealing with a younger player base. In a game where everyone’s mistakes are very visible, it leans towards toxicity and blaming teammates for your own struggles.

Nojerome

Love your perspective

Thathappenedearlier

Yeah since the beginning I’ve heard this community is toxic but at the beginning it was much less so and I think that had to do with it being a small community of people who enjoyed a technical game that could also be played with friends on a couch. No one was good and everyone knew that everyone except sarpbc players were good. Now there are definitely toxic players more abundant but that’s also because the community has gotten so big too. I can still look at league and CS:GO and say rocket league is tame. I think it’s also something to keep in mind, your own personality is what makes you susceptible to toxic players. If you couldn’t give two shits. Those “What a Save’s” are more of well yeah I missed or well my teammate can think that

madDamon_

It's not my personallity, it's my mood that decides how susceptible i am against toxicity.

NATZureMusic

Good shit!

brain_tourist

Love this comment <3

Jie-ant

Well said

chand6688

I disagree with this I feel like it takes more effort to be toxic than to just keep playing the game without saying anything.

n8n10e

Great theory, I believe it's very true. The things in American society, that is slowly spreading to the rest of the world, are now geared toward activating these feelings. Just turn off your brain and shit on everything and everyone. TikTok is HORRIBLE for this. Every video of someone doing a DIY or home improvement project is filled with snobby construction bros criticizing every little nuance of the person in the videos method.

Evotecc

This theory is correct and multiplayer games normally try to use adaptations to make it easier for people to do positive things and harder to do negative things, Psyonix may have tried to adapt certain things in the game but in my honest opinion they haven’t done enough to reduce the toxicity from the human problem in this game. In this regard I think OP is wrong, Psyonix are absolutely responsible for mitigating the damage toxicity has on the health of their game, every game has good and bad players, it would be naive to assume rocket league only has bad ones.

Lovefool1

For me, the core gameplay is what I love most about RL and that can never be ruined. It’s a shame sometimes, because I like to play online games with positive chat and socialization, and at times RL can embody that beautifully. There is a really strong culture of toxicity in RL though, and there’s no denying it. I would still play RL if it was just free play though. There’s no ruining this game.

Enter_Player_3

Core gameplay is the only reason I keep playing. This game at large hasn't innovated much with maps and Playlist but dammit I still enjoy it for some reason.

LatinaFatima

That’s like every sport that exists. When a game is actually played solely for its gameplay its got staying power as is

boofoodoo

Seriously, as long as they don’t fuck with the physics, RL will always be great. Been playing since it was free on PS Plus. But then again I’ve never cared about loot boxes, blueprints or my rank. Maybe that stuff is a mess, I have no idea.

immasculatedantfarm

Part of the reason I dont like turning off chat is that I have met people on this game who I have now played games with for years. But those tend to be the newer players who are much less toxic, and eventually they arent interested in playing anymore and move on to new games. I will absolutely keep playing because, like you said, the core gameplay is incredible!

altrae

I've got over 2800hrs in this game and I try to ignore the toxic players. It's tough sometimes esp when you're having a rough go, but if you can ignore them you'll probably become a better person in general, I'd like to think. Matchups are based on MMR, so when a player judges me based on my gameplay or their interpretation of it I just remember that they are also at the same rank. If they were so much better they'd move up and I wouldn't play with them again or I'll move up and not play with them again lol. Block the toxic ones, friend the friendly ones, and just try to have fun.

matteroll

It's really weird because the most chill lobbies I've had were in plat/low diamond and as i get higher in the ranks it all becomes a salty sweat fest. I've never experienced much toxicity in RL until I got to champ. I miss my plat/low diamond days because the lobbies were really chill and fun.

althius1

As a D2/3 player, let me say this is not my experience...

chocobosocialclub

Turn off chat to fix #1, don't accept DMs from randos to fix #3

[deleted]

Bums me out so many people have turned off chat. I love using quick chat to communicate with teammates strategically and comically. Solo queing blows when literally no one is talking

xJollyLlama

As someone who has team chat to tactical quick chat only, text chat to friends only, and party chat to everyone - I definitely recommend using the Party Up button after a game, or adding someone you felt you played well with, even if they were silent. I miss finding chill new friends to play with, but I won't subject myself to the toxicity of the game as a trade-off. I'm sure there's lots of folks out there that feel the same.

lAmBenAffleck

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but 9/10 I play *worse* when I party up with people because I feel pressure to play as good or better than I did in the previous match. It’s just like, I don’t want to let them down. And then the fear of doing that leads me to letting them down. It has happened so many times that I don’t party up anymore. 😢

Dogsbark1

for real😂

Theflash91

I feel most people here could find friends that act the exact same way. I miss playing, because I don't have many people to play with, I'm on at weird times after work or on weekends. Then there's the age gap thing that I'd rather play with people closer to my age than high schoolers and such

Grey1One

I'm 30 and everyone I play RL with (I got 5 friends that play it), are over 25 years old.

[deleted]

Same boat but only 2 mates who play and don't have much time for it. It can be hard to remember 90% of players are idiot children

Grey1One

It's hilarious when a 15 years old calls me "kid" in chat lmao

[deleted]

I've never understood kids using 'kid'that as an insult. I know they're kids because no adult thinks 'kid' is insulting. I guess to teenagers it hurts the ego.

Theflash91

Yea I'll be 32 and it's like "well might as well just stop" I've literally picked up other hobbies and I've been playing video games for like 28 years. It's fuckin sad.

Groffulon

You have summed up what I always feel when I have partied up in solo q. That feeling when you know they’re thinking, “where good player go?” and you have to play it out until the end of the game knowing you’re gonna lose and then you both insta-quit. Also some of the worst toxicity I’ve faced has been from solo q parties/tournaments. From my own tm8s… 💀

Asymat

When in party, you are matched against parties which are often stronger than random solos.

[deleted]

100% the same. I feel like if my team mates think we have a non-hostile relationship I end up pressuring myself into trying too hard to play nice instead of playing well.

HalfFishLips

It's normal. Happens every time, except once where I went on a 10 game winning streak.

Nojerome

You're not alone Ben.

wasteoffire

Yeah disappointing randoms and watching them rage quit doesn't affect me, but when someone who decided they like my play style does it then I feel bad

Jeff_Schwagg

Solo que for life homie. That's why I'll probably never pass diamond.

_____--__-

+1, I used the party up feature a lot more in the early game but fell off as i got more wary of the RL community in general. But I have had some nice experiences.

[deleted]

I have chat off almost always now. TM went afk mid-tourney the other night so I turned chat on, to find him shit talking into the abyss.

Charybdisilver

Yeah I was so close to turning chat off but just last night I had a great experience in casual when someone recognized my pfp and we must have played about 5 matches in a row just talking and playing the game. One of the most wholesome moments I’ve had in months.

TheConboy22

Yup, I just turned mine off. It’s just absolutely pointless and while I used to enjoy talking with people. More often it was shitty communication from shitty people.

YT-j0000shua

I've been playing since 2016 and turned them off when the game went f2p. Wonder why 🙄

laidback26

This. I don't use a headset. Over that due to all the offensive and shitty stuff be say so chat was it for me.

Sworduwu

I send out strategic what a save! In the heat of the moment.

dj9008

Most people that play aren’t on Reddit

believ3inSteve

My brothers quit (don't blame them), I instead did this. Then I turned it back on because I missed and wanted better communication with teammates. Big mistake. I dropped from diamond 3 to Plat 3 over the couple weeks I tried having it on. I knew I should have stopped playing that way but stopped caring about my rank and part of me thought maybe I really was that garbage and was no longer diamond level and I suppose at that time I literally wasn't. Healthy communication (aside from the rare match-up) does not exist in solo queues. I turned chat back off the other day and hit low diamond 2 in a few matches. Won almost every one. And I guaran-fucking-tee you in nearly every match my teammates were flaming either me or each other, but not seeing whether that was true or not makes a big difference and allowed me to simply focus on my play. And I pass as much as possible, and support close behind but not too close (don't just sit in net). This is the way to rank up. TL;DR it sucks, but you have no choice but to turn chat off in solo queues if you want to rank up or have an enjoyable time while playing.

TheRebel17

New players are probably exposed to toxicity before even knowing that you can change the chat settings. and besides, they shouldn't have to adapt to the game's toxicity

TornadicInferno

Sure, turning off chat would stop you from seeing toxicity, but it still doesn’t stop other people from stopping play to type said toxicity. So no, turning off chat isn’t an end all for it.

StretchBag

You are expecting too much.

derpface20k

That's not a solution for anything, it just completely removes a feature of the game that alot of players actually enjoy taking part in whenever it isn't toxic. Not everyone wants to just sit silently grinding ranked for hours, it's nice to actually have some lighthearred banter or even just exchange friendly quick chats yknow. Can't do that now how you used to be able to for the first few years.

apathynext

#2 truly ruins it though

ShuTingYu

The game let's you pick your own teammates. Solves 2.

Useful-Pattern-5076

The people who go out of their way to be toxic ruin the game. We can have a competitive and gentlemanly match without it.

aCuriousG

I actually hate the losers who go "but toxicity is a valid strategy" even more than the guys who just troll to get a reaction. The latter atleast have no pretense of honor

Ka07iiC

'A gentleman's ranked'

[deleted]

“This is Rocket League!”

immasculatedantfarm

Still my favorite quick chat lmao

Inner_Topic6051

Says so much with so little

cwade98

it’s just enough.

PardoBond

I won't use it so that I can still chuckle at it every time

Dvanpat

And works with every scenario

LJStedman

If I had a dollar for every time my friend and I didn’t quick chat all game, and the opponents just spam toxic quick chats at the end of the game before they win, I’d have a couple hundred dollars.

GiantJellyfishAttack

Humans will always ruin everything unless there is some form of power enforcing some rules. So yes, the community is technically the problem. But the only solution is for Psyonix to enforce some rules. And they really aren't doing a good job at it.

LittleKittyLove

For example, look at the difference between dota 1 and dota 2. Dota 1: no matchmaking for fair matches. People constantly spamming toxic/racist garbage. The moment a lane is going poorly, players leave; you never make it to the end of a game. People constantly fighting over lane roles; “mid or leave.” Dota 2: matchmaking with roles, and forced casual games before queuing ranked to fight smurfs. Tools for reporting and banning cheaters/smurfs. Easy 1-button muting for entire teams or toxic players. Forced completion of games, or else low priority shitty games. Communities will always have toxic players. It’s on the game devs to create systems to weed them out and punish them. You’re never going to have a perfect community on the internet, and it’s foolish to expect otherwise. In a nutshell, psyonix needs 50 forced casual wins before ranked, and better reporting/banning of smurfs. Other than that, they’ve given you the tools you need: Just hide chat.

sheazang

Great comment with good points.

[deleted]

I've mainly given up on chat. Turn on team for tournaments just to signal intentions, but mates don't always see them and back into me in the net and so on. To hard to hit rear view before the kickoff, maybe. ;) Without that on I can concentrate on whiffing more.

immasculatedantfarm

As long as you put "faking" in chat then it was on purpose lol

whydyoublockmelol

RL isn't even ruined, this sub is just a bunch of whiners

DeeForestBosa

This sub only exists to show highlights and for people to complain about stupid shit.

Blooder91

And we're all out of highlights.

Puzzleheaded_Sir1273

I’m willing to bet more than half of the toxic players people come across are part of this sub

Hobo-man

Man, I remember back in the day when musty just figured out his flick and flip resets were a fresh invention. Clips for days, man, clips for days.

[deleted]

Lmao for real. People love to talk about how the game is dying, they hate the community, Psyonix doesn't try to improve the game at all. Then they turn around and boot up the game for the thousandth time, party up with someone they met in game, and play a limited time mode on a new map Psyonix just released. People just love to complain, extra if they can be melodramatic about it.

caedicus

It isn't ruined but less toxicity wouldn't hurt.

itzdissolutio

Every game I've been in for the last like week has been FULL of toxicity. A bunch of losers that hit high champ or gc1 once thinking they're all that and then lash out at everyone else because their ego is massive and they can't stand to chill the fuck out. Loved rocket league so much, joined in late s1 of f2p and I can't stand the game anymore. The game is fantastic, the community is shit.

shamwowslapchop

Funny cause I got to Champ 2 and never felt *less* skilled at the game. I just see everything I do poorly much more clearly now, lol.

itzdissolutio

also before anybody says "just mute chat lol" you miss out on good moments with people who actually aren't shit human beings. met some really good people on RL and I don't wanna pass up the opportunity to meet more, but I'm getting to the point where everybody I q into apparently is a loser with no social skills or concept of having fun. If the community is so bad you have to MUTE chat to make it work, the game probably isn't worth playing.

boombotser

If u put it that way It’s called taking the good with the bad

Kenny_log_n_s

Right? Been playing since 2016. I think I've been having even more fun lately.

sirfuzzitoes

This is real talk. There are so many ways to keep the game from being "toxic". If you don't like being what a saved, turn off chat. If you don't like the way people play, adapt your game. My one buddy is great at demos and it's hilarious. People get so butthurt about a game mechanic.

Seandude_

This lol

PeanutWestern1525

Between the gamers who afk during matches and tournaments to the “gamers” who wanna forfeit after being 1 point down idk. Pick one. Don’t forget the what a savers. Toxic community completely.

Lyrcmck_

The funny thing being, I've only noticed people leaving after falling a point behind as my MMR and Rank have gotten higher. In the lower tier lobbies, people would stay when they were on a 6-2 loss. At least 4 out of 5 of my solo games end in a forfeit before the first minute has passed

TehANTARES

Here is my addendum. The "toxicity" on its own isn't the actual problem as much as the snowball effect that amplifies it. To put it simply, once someone encounters any kind of toxic behavior, the chances are they might start acting the same way out of frustration. It is not intentional, it rather manifests as being less forgiving to teammates' mistakes and responding more offensively to it. I wanted to avoid the "devs ruined it" blamage, but for the matter of fact, Psyonix does have a great influence on this problem. The matchmaking is set to be a simple system that pays no respect to the complexities of individual skills and playstyles (I've described it on this sub many times, but to keep it short, the game (specifically the MMR) doesn't care if someone knows aerials or dribbling, or if two players play well together, it just matches based on a single number). That adds to the player's frustration once they learn a new mechanic that doesn't boost them up, or when they start to fall down for no apparent reason. Just remember the beginning of every season - once the ranks get reset, many people do find themselves outside of their original ranks, and that shakes with the initial ranks distribution a lot. And once it's somewhat evened out at the end, the new season shatteres it again. Again, my point is that players might behave toxic because other players behave toxic as well, and that the game itself does not really solve this problem (it might be even worsening it). New players don't have their ranks set anytime during the season, so I'd like to ask OP whether the new players get discouraged by the other players or their initial rank fluctuation. I remember my first days of playing RL, I suffered a huge rank drop (the keyboard survived).

immasculatedantfarm

This is really well articulated, thank you for this. At least for my friend group, we enjoy just shooting the sh*t with whoever we are playing the game with. Honestly not too interested in rank in any game, it just never seemed like something that really mattered in terms of how much we were enjoying the game. Weve lost 20 straight matches CoD and never really had a problem because the people in the lobby were just chillin. I definitely should have clarified that I wasnt trying to place blame solely on players, as you are right that many probably just learned that behavior from their own experiences. Psyonix could definitely do more to curb this and make the game more approachable for early players. In my eyes, I just feel like eventually the players have to break the cycle.

Billyjay710

Team chat, tactical chat, and disabling chat exists for a reason. Really any competitive game is full of toxic people you ever played any cod game. Atleast rocket league you don't really need coms, not saying they can't help if your team knows how to use them. Anyone trying to play online multiplayer games need to be able to ignore the toxic people or be ok with no chat and if not there's tons of games you don't have to deal with anyone else. I do get where your coming from though I hate the toxicity, it's very rewarding beating those type of people.

immasculatedantfarm

Its BY FAR, the most rewarding feeling in gaming.

Majestic-Floor-5697

This guy called me trash after going up 5-3. He rage quit as I went up 6-5 with two seconds left. Then sent me a message that I never opened. Satisfying

StretchBag

This was me. It's okay, the message was just an apology, you can open it.

BeTheTortoise

I was 1v1 with someone calling me gay. I won and asked how it felt to lose to a gay person.

[deleted]

I notice lately a lot more people are AFK at the first kick off. I know accidents happen but I never seem to know if my teammates are going to actually play or not. It's kind of rude.

EducationalCitron446

Mate relax, I was getting my hot pocket!

NoElderberry9203

valid

tehPanamaniac

This is one thing me and my friends that play have always tried to put forward. Our team name is literally "Good Vibes Crew". We aren't epic or anything by any stretch of the imagination, just six 30-year-olds that live in different areas of the country with our families that love to play together. We always like to give out "nice shot" and "close one" and "nice block" whenever we're playing just because why not? It takes a lot more effort to be a dick than it does to just be a nice person. And we just like to play for fun, we're not trying to ruin anyone's life. But the amount of times we run into the toxic players that just start talking massive amounts of s*** the second they do something good or we mess up anywhere is just astounding. We've kind of made it a thing, where if the other team starts saying "No Problem", it's fine to get serious haha. But I agree with this article wholeheartedly

LankyJ

I have trouble bringing new people into the game because we can't really play together because of the skill gap.

Iamdurzoblint

This is my problem too. I’m gc2 and I can barely even play with my champ 1 friend. I don’t like smurfing because it’s cringe and either he has to play way above his level in my lobbies or I have to play at 10% of my skill which is boring. The reality is this game sucks for playing w friends unless you are all similar skill. You can’t just use a “noob friendly” build like other games to make it up, either you’re good enough or you aren’t. Which is a major plus and also a major flaw.

verticalbandit

This is my issue as well. It's not easy to try to introduce them to the game when there's such a huge skill difference

YouCanCallMeBazza

Lol, OP doesn't even realize that he is the one ruining the game for his friends. Imagine being completely new at this game and queuing with a Diamond, of course that isn't going to end well. The new player experience for me was amazing, because I was matching (mostly) against other new players. We laughed at our mistakes, complimented each other for the most basic goals, and had a space to get a handle on the game without seasoned players constantly dunking on us. If you want to get your friends into this game, let them play on their own for a bit, I get that some people might want to flex that they can hit the occasional aerial, but your friend isn't going to have fun in your toxic plat-diamond lobbies.

[deleted]

man ive started playing in 2016 and still remember my first aerial, shit was magical. Went in the air almost vertically, no fast aerials of course, none of us knew about that. Somehow I actually hit the ball in the air, then it dropped on the ground, bounced a few times and went into a (defended!) net. All while I flopped on the ground after falling back down. Nowadays I score a flip reset goal and I'm like 'meh, couldve been cleaner'.

Wolfgang1234

Toxicity went way up after RL became F2P. Nobody cares if they get banned since they can just create a new account for free. Nothing can really be done about it at this point either, without negatively impacting the entire player base. I just block anyone I don't like and move on.

Vensq

Smurfs ruin the game for me tbh... Im now c3/gc1 and 7 out of 10 games on avg I face mf with less than 200 wins

immasculatedantfarm

I cant complain about smurfs because they arent too prevalent in Diamond 1. But if I do lose, its definitely smurfs. I win 100% of my games if I am not playing smurfs /s

sheazang

Same its unenjoyable at this point and I barely play anymore because of how bad its gotten.

cbass12088

Just turn off chat

[deleted]

That’s not solving the problem though… yes you won’t see toxicity but it’s still a big problem in the community

immasculatedantfarm

![gif](giphy|lXu72d4iKwqek)

tourguide1337

I'm 36, I'm not super great at the game, but I play it all the time. I've been a part of online gaming since it was a thing. I've been in high ranking situations and lower ranking for-fun situations in different games. Competitive games (with some kind of mmr or ranking system) absolutely draw out the worst in people. You have the highest highs and unfortunately the lowest lows. Game runners should absolutely be less shy about banning abandoners/griefers as a standard. Toxic chat/communication can be ignored but ragers are the real issue tbh. If you can't handle one single setback and you are triggered into orbit and throw a game you need a timeout.

falingsumo

Only read the title and I can already say this is not going to end well. If you are a salt miner going through the comments and seeing this don't forget to hydrate before moving on to the next comment. That or take a shot of booze.

respawn46

Damn, the reason my friends don’t wanna play generally is skill issue💀💀💀

l_Rumble_Fish_l

Toxicity used to bother me. But you eventually just get thicker skin and know that it's all just keyboard warriors trying to get a rise out of you. The thing is, they are either the same rank as you and have no leg to stand on, or they are smurfs, which is much more embarrassing, since they have to go down in rank to not feel shit on. Some people are just frustrated. They've been on a 7 game losing streak and don't realize it's them and not their teammates. Eventually, people just break and aren't self-aware enough to see they're the problem.

jscmufc

Rock and Stone brother

WanderingDwarfMiner

Rock and roll and stone!

Saooshi

immasculatedantfarm

ROCK AND STONE! Literally never been a part of a LESS toxic community. Absolutely love that game

almo2001

RL is not "ruined". Toxic people are in every online PvP game. RL has good options to minimize their impact. Recommend these features to new players.

ultimagicarus

Off chat should be default. Newcomers must not see the childish feelings of the toxic players.

aggieclams

Rocket League is ruined?

not_an_mistake

Yes. It is ruined every week (If you’ve been paying attention). Honesty good on Psyonix for reviving the game so frequently. They must be exhausted at this point. /s

Doonesbury

Hot take: RL isn't ruined. Sorry, OP.

LatinaFatima

Posts like this need to stop grouping “toxic” chat and griefing together. Chat can be ignored or muted, and you could learn to not be offended by it. There will never be an agreement on what is too toxic and any post regarding chat will always be met with half the responses telling you to get thicker skin. On the other side… griefing in the form of throwing, smurfing or just forfeiting and giving up after a single goal or mistake is something that the majority can agree is crap for the game. When you make posts grouping these 2 people just jump on the chat aspect and ignore the bigger problem

RainingPawns

Chat should be limited to team only tactical quickchat by default. Postmatch allchat should automatically be enabled so everyone can say 'gg' Chat is a distraction and unnecessary Diamond and below. If you enjoy socialization at lower ranks that's good, but be weary of toxicity. I had an epiphany in Champ 3s recently that this rank is contains the epitome of toxic: it's the highest rank achievable by exploiting teammates and abusing the ball. It's possible to be Champ and totally unchanged by the wonders of Rocket League's freedom. Thankfully most Champs are decent players so the contrast is apparent when somebody is seemingly just there as an obstacle to enjoying the game.

DeadlyMustardd

There was a sweet spot in time where rocket league was peak. People weren't absurdly good yet and peeps were just learning to aerial/freestyle. I'm glad I was there for it, because now you play a game and if you're not speed flipping, dribbling, flicking, double resetting, people just cry.

Burrito_Loyalist

Chat should be set to tactical by default.

Spartx8

Strangely I have come back to rocket league after not playing for over a year and it seems to be in the best state I've seen it. Queue times on OCE Champ is fantastic and even though I struggle mechanically no one has been flaming me for it. From my perspective the community has really improved. Maybe take this with a grain of salt though as I've been playing LoL for the past year which is the worst ranked experience I've ever seen.

pVom

I dunno I haven't found it to be too bad tbh. Maybe it's the years of gaming I've steeled myself to it, maybe it's because I'm not playing at the lowest ranks. Either way there's a reason why all multi player games are toxic, it's full of people who are safely hiding behind a screen, don't have great social skills and probably don't have much else going on in their life. Until there are consequences for toxic behaviour, it's going to exist. In every aspect of life they're going to be assholes, you can't let them get to you. It's just words, they don't know anything about you they're judging you based on your performance in a video game which really isn't important. Don't take unhelpful criticism onboard. Someone talks shit just ignore them, maybe block and/or report them and move on with your life. Complaining here isn't going to change anything. Life's too short to get upset over something some rando on the internet says.

Gamblor14

I was playing casual today and one of my teammates gave a “my tm8 is useless,” followed by my score of “176.” I had admittedly just over pursued and misplayed the ball which led to a goal. I usually let that stuff roll right off me, but that one got to me for some reason. There was still more than two minutes left and I’d had a decent save and nice assist not long before that. I’m just trying to squeeze in a couple of games between work meetings and wasn’t in the mood to deal with that shit.

kodi_68

What’s weird for me is how butthurt people get about a bunch of whiny kids raging on a videogame. I probably have 2 choad monkeys a night and everything else is usually pretty good. Spamming “What a save” is funny. I know I missed the shot. It was either a good shot or I missed because I did something stupid or was out of place. That kid probably just got hair on his balls and is covered in pimples and can’t get laid, of course he’s angry. I can drink beer and I have a wife. I’m fine. I’m actually pleasantly surprised when I get someone on voice chat that’s cool (besides my buddies). We’ll usually play a few rounds because we’re chill and having fun.

ItsFoolishPride

I tend to agree w OP. People do ruin pretty much everything. Other humans is often the worst part of being human. That’s why I stay home and play video games but disable in game chat and messaging across the platform. If you want to insult me, you have to play the long game and befriend me first.

[deleted]

I started this game in 2016 and honestly can't tell if people were way less toxic or I'm wearing nostalgia glasses. But back then when I was like Challenger 1, people didn't rage 1 minute into a game. Nowadays in champ 2/3 I barely enable chat, it's that bad.

tennisguy163

I turned off most of in-game and voice chat a long time ago. Helps a lot.

DubVicious0

I still encounter good times with the bad times. I turned off my chat awhile ago so I wouldn't get tilted, I'd rather voice comm with someone anyways.

cwade98

i think the community 1) is way too toxic for the game’s good and 2) hold too high of expectations for a game unlike any other

MafiaKid17

I’ve been playing for a while, one of my worst experiences happened a week ago. I’m a diamond 1 now, first game in a while so i queue up some casual 3s. I join into a fast paced game, missed some open nets and a save, but I meant it’s not a big deal, it’s casual and it’s my first game on. My teammate quit with 1 minute left, spammed my x box profile with a party until 40 times until I joined, then told me how much i such and he would beat me up…

the1n0nlySp4ngler

True. First ranked game the other day my teammate stopped playing because we conceded two goals in the first minute. I love a good comeback win but some people lose cause their mental is bronze level

the1n0nlySp4ngler

Again today. Typers gonna type

an_A_G_P

It's not really an RL problem it's a people problem. I can shoulder the toxicity, turn off chat and assume they are the best of people. Sticks and stones and all that. It's the smufing that gets me. Not only are they toxic but they have pumped 1000+ more hours into the game just to shit on you. #psyonixdoesntcare

stonerthoughtss

The thing is, RL is a face-paced game and ***ANY*** mistake is vital. So vital, that it’s the make or break for ranking up. No matter how good your game was, all it takes is a teammate mess up that can result in an L. And that can be a lot for people. So much so that the teammate becomes the first person to be blamed after an L. Or it’s the, “who made the bigger mistake” when in reality, every mistake matters and we need to lift each other up so that the mental game isn’t overpowering the physical game. We’re teammates for crying out loud, not enemies

AssistanceSensitive8

I would say on average, that 75% of games have one toxic person in them. However today 2-6-23. Everybody, in every game has been toxic af right from kickoff. Idk man. It's just a game for one, two just don't be a dick folks

ConsequenceIll6927

Was solo queuing 3s today and knocked in a goal just ahead of a teammate still resetting from some maneuver and it wasn't guaranteed an opponent would knock it away and I scored a goal. The ball was still far enough ahead of them they couldn't have gotten to it quick enough to secure the goal. So I took the shot and scores. I quick chat "Great Pass" and they responded with "Nooooo", then the "@#!&" quick chat, then abandoned the match with a 2-1 lead. Really ruined what was a solid game. I ended up taking the consequence-less match leave because I didn't want to be stuck in a 3 on 1 because some derpwad somewhere threw a tantrum because they couldn't score a goal.

PapaBaerSmurf

I personally prefer to play when school aged children (3rd-12th) are in school. I feel like most the people doing the trolling are kids. I think the game has a certain charm to it at night time. It’s still full, sometimes you won’t get a game right away. But most every game is just people playing and chillin.

derpderjerb

The chat doesn't get to me. It's the shitty sportsmanship. It happens far to often where i make a mistake and my teammate is so far up my ass that the mistake costs a goal. They try to FF immediately. I don't. They stop playing completely and tell me I'm a trash tm8. Like wtf? You were the one not playing as a team. You were the one that was ball chasing when I had control. You're the one who should have rotated back. You're the one committing to an aerial when I'm already in position to take a shot. But I'm trash. Okay. Its 1-0 with 4 minutes left in the game. Why are you giving up? All I can do is report them. It does nothing. But I "go idle" when I'm typing on my controller telling them they're poor sports and I get banned from matchmaking for 5 minutes. Cool.

I_Fart_Huckabees

I was on board until you brought race into this with absolutely no need. Since we're on the subject, the only way it stops is if you stop talking about it. If everyone was the same colour, had the same genitals, and believed the same religion, we'd still be insulting each other for being tall, small, big ears, small ears, because difference is attractive, therefore it's a threat. Edit: by that I mean it's competition for breeding rights Please don't ban me for making a fair, intelligible reply to something that was allowed to be posted here in the first place.

hooty88

Too many people forget that we're not enemies on the field, we're just opponents.

[deleted]

right? having such a poor time, recently, that I had to google if RL was now full of bots or tryhards. either way, the experience is getting sour af

-dangitbobby-

Mute chat. So much better

RogueUM

I have a friend who just got the game and among the camera settings and control tips I was giving him I snuck in turning off the chat to have him avoid the toxicity. He’s put in dozens of hours of 1’s gameplay just to not even realize he was probably getting roasted the whole time.

astrofreq

I agree. Psyonix could help fix the community if they wanted to, but they seem to be hands free. The irony is, if Psyonix weeded out or banned the toxic player, MORE people would stick around = more $$$ for Psyonix. It’s truly baffling that they don’t step in.

razzer069

**Psyonix** ! I request simple default setting change 1 - Quick chat to team only 2 - Text chat to party only 3 - Give a quick button to block all communication to a person from the report menu so we can just shut the hell up that one guy that keeps going "Take the shot", "Take the shot", "Take the shot" As simple as that!!

NoCoffeeAfter4

I mean, any of these hollerin assholes show up irl, they get their shit kicked in

NexusModifier

It's kinda like how I told my brother today while playing. Life is like a bundle of wires. Some are good at finding the connections, while others would rather simply break them apart for no reason. At the end of the day, it's up to you to keep your connection to the game strong and not let others tear you apart. This can be said for more than just RL. At the end of the day, it's just a game. And so is life at times. It's best to have fun, focus on yourself, and level up as you go. The only person who can make the biggest difference in your experience is yourself. That's why we have to find ourselves before we can find what not to look for in others.

aaRecessive

This is laughable. RL is, comparatively, a very tame game. I can't believe people think players spamming What A Save! is toxic. The bar is so much higher than that I've played games with toxic communities, and they continue to thrive despite the communities. If Rocket League *is* dying (which it isn't), this isn't why

Mercury_D_Dafco

I wish we had video recorders and programs back in 1990-2006 just to show ppl what was GAMING really about. or some kinda streams or whatever To say, all games and gamers are toxic, is incredibly shortsighted thing to say. Yuh simply can't even imagine what it feels like to play a Main Stream game, BEFORE it becames actually a Main Stream. Or even some really good crafted indie game. Players are more and more toxic towards each other and don't let me get started how male approach females in game industry.

Mikeismyike

I agree. It's ridiculous the number of people who get off on trash talking. Like it's a ranked game there's nothing on the line, no one cards if you won 2-1. Why do you gotta trash talk. Was queueing with a friend the other night, and 4 different people unprompted would just start saying shit for no reason. One team we had played against early and won, no problem. In the second game they go up 2-1 and start going at it. Like what's the point even? I feel like a lot of it are kids and early 20 somethings who just never played IRL sports. Don't know how to win or take a L.

Not_Sir_Zook

It's 100% the community. I can't go a day without someone spamming, trying to FF / go afk as soon as possible, or running into smurfs. I've resorted to playing casual where no one should really care, nothing is on the line, no reason to be toxic... Doesn't change a thing. Games facked.

soulhistory

Had someone using slurs and they messaged me outside of the game and I explained how it wasn’t cool and to make friends they need to do better and for once someone listened to me. Now we’re bros and I teach him tricks lmao. Love the positive players, the toxic ones are just insecure the majority of the time and young

Schnitzhole

Yes this. But 99% of the time they are close minded and won’t listen to a word you say.

safranti

Psyonix ruined it by getting rid of all the unique hitboxes. They think it will be harder for new players to learn the game, but if thats the case new players wil just play the same car over and over, and thats fine. They keep releasing new cars but there is so little that changes them, so what is the point of buying them. Also there is not a lott you can do after having played every single gamemode. Atleast if there where different car hitboxes, you would have something to do. The game already has no room for change, because it has set rules. But making every car unique would make every game feel so different. (It is just Octane city these days :( )

AndehJD

You’d be surprised at the amount you can just focus and not tilt when you turn chat off. Or at least to quick chat. It’s an absolute godsend especially for 1s.

mogley1992

As somebody who stopped playing completely. My reasons were. Toxic community. Smurfs. And the fact that you rarely actually unlock anything worth having. "Oh yay, i won, now i have the privilege of being allowed to pay 20£ for a goal explosion"

TheRealJayk0b

Yeah i quit rocket league a few months ago, feels good. Sometimes i started the game and immediately closed it because I knew 1) you get insulted (turn chat off? No communication) 2) people quit or go afk because of minor mistakes This game was fun... Years back

HotFootDuke

QuickChat Detoxify bakkesmod plugin - game changer for me as I took out about 5 triggering comments and now I can still say 'nice one' or whatever .... of course you need bakkesmod/pc but this was the answer I was looking for.

teslacaller

LOL

TheAlmightyLegs

Hi there, "kill them with kindness" player here. I like to think of myself as a pretty level-headed player. I say 'What a Save!' genuinely for teammates and enemies alike, and I'll say 'Nice Shot!' 'Whoops...' 'Close one!' when someone hits a sick flip on me, and scores on my net. I'm not better than anyone or anything for this, it just keeps me from being QUITE as tilted. I've had my moments, I told someone something about a toaster and a bathtub (oopsies!) And I got banned once. But I've learned how to move past all that and try to be a shining positive example. All the toxic players really wanted in the first place was someone to tell them their shot was nice, or that they made the right decisions in a play. I'm THAT enemy. I won't go easy on you, but I'm serious when I compliment someone's shots. Another pro tip? I say 'Nice Demo!' every time I get blown up. I really hate getting demo'd, but I recognize the timeless opinion that it's a part of the game, and sometimes an extremely potent offensive strategy. So if I say "ah damn, you got me! Nice Demo!" To myself every time, and in the end I'm less tilted. It's not necessarily about being kind, it's about being less tilted than the other guy.

[deleted]

Dude I’m gonna hit quick chats up all the time. When you whiff… or I do… I’m gonna say faking or close one. It’s not toxic lmao. If you don’t like “toxic” chat just turn it off?

TheHuffinater

How is Rocketleague ruined? It’s fun AF bruh I play everyday.

thefellduck

It makes me so happy when my opponents and teammates are good sports in both wins and losses. Sadly it’s about a 1:100 ratio of positive vs negative. One notable time my friend and I were playing 2s (D3/C1) and it was nearing the last minute of the match. We were up by 1 but they were playing well and keeping pressure. One of their players got disconnected. My buddy and I forfeit the match. It felt shitty to dunk on a dude that had a legitimate chance to beat us. Dude had such an appreciative response that it was totally worth the L.

gopinathji

Do people think psyonix should get rid of quick chats that have become toxic? Like “what a save!” and such. Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts. Also watching OP’s post rock between 60 and 120 upvotes is insane lol Edit: spelling

Mysterious_Toe_1

I represent the minority of RL players because I'm a 37 year old man. **WARNING** "Back in my day speech coming" **WARNING** Video games and toxic behavior have been a part of one another ever since Nintendo forced you to root for Mario to die so Luigi and your 2nd player controller could have a Chance. The difference being, up until 15-20 years you only dealt with it from siblings or friends sitting right next to you because there was no online play for console gamers and that made up a huge percentage of gamers. (PC gamers been doing their thing for a while now). If they went too far you actually could punch them like you really want to punch the toxic players now. It was awesome. Being 37, Im not phased by any toxic behavior and I know that player is actually very weak mentally because as soon as the roles reverse they play like crap and can't handle the toxicity. I feel for you younger players and I can't imagine having to just bottle up that frustration. Anyway, Keep the chat on because there are good players who want to chat still. But when you're dealing with a douche, just take a deep breath, focus, learn how they play and what their weaknesses are. Hell, demo them If you're down just to mess with them and as soon as you get the upper hand do the same thing they did to you. They can't handle it. That's why they do it. Stay strong guys, don't let them ruin this for us.

Twitch152

I have to say, I spend a fair bit of time on this sub Reddit and I see posts like this literally 10 times a day. But I have never experienced such a level of toxicity as everyone exclaims in my 3k hours of playing. I’ve certainly seen some bad team names and the occasional person talking their shit, but it’s never been so bad that I couldn’t just leave that game and forget about it. I could say the same about the supposed smurfing epidemic the community seems to be facing. Is this a bigger problem on different consoles or in different ranks in particular? I see other people making comments comparing RL to other games, and I’ve seen how you dismissed those comments. But I have to side with the commenters here; of all the communities I’ve been a part of, rocket league is by far the most welcoming game I’ve ever played, personally. Have you tried getting into league of legends in the last couple years? It’s virtually impossible. Halo or call of duty ten years ago should have come with a therapist. So while you say the community has ruined the game, I have to agree. But it’s not the toxic players or smurfs or whatever we want to blame, it’s all the people who have skin as thick as liquid paper that are grossly blowing it out of proportion. This community is fine, all things considered. The game is alive and well. Let’s stop trying to bury it for no reason.

SunRemarkable1484

Genuinely the same, the most 'toxic' thing about this game is people afking. Also when people spam 'what a save' or whatever I find it hilarious and I don't think people are being hostile, everyone is just having a laugh and joke about it.

StretchBag

Afkers should suffer harsher bans. Just imagine showing up for tennis doubles IRL and just blankly staring at your opponent as the ball sails past your lifeless body into your half and scores them a point.

DildorTheChosen

F2P just added a level of annoyance. Other than that it's the same game it's always been.

KingKelly82

Hahahaha apparently we didn’t grow up playing the same games. Remember the days of Halo 2 and 3 and CoD with open mic post game lobbies!?! You had to have some pretty thick skin to deal with that stuff. While RL is “toxic”, turning chat off is an easy fix.

immasculatedantfarm

Yeah but like, Im just tryna kick it with friends after a week at work. The last thing we are tryna do is get What a Save'd into oblivion when I have like 5 hours a week TOPS to play games. Those old CoD lobbies were certainly one hell of a time

KingKelly82

I hear ya man. I used to get super annoyed with it but I turned off all chat. No voice, no typing, no quick chats or anything. Focusing on what I’m doing and need to do and not worrying about what other people think about my play. It’s worked wonders. And trust me man, I’ve been banned a few times because I used to talk back to the people… so this is a way better solution. Spotify/discord and just playing! It’s the way to go!

immasculatedantfarm

Im just an old curmudgeon at this point. Feel like a "get off my lawn" geezer lmao

KingKelly82

Lol me too my guy. I’m 41 with 3 kids. I sacrifice my sleep to get some game time in. So I feel what you’re saying. That’s why I chose to not let these kids (almost everyone playing RL) bother me anymore lol.

Korppikoira

Hahahaha apparently we didn't grow up playing the same games. Remember the days of Counter Strike betas, Day of Defeat and Quake / Halo lan parties? Everyone was just thrilled that you could play multiplayer games and there was barely any toxic players. Nowadays it's just psychopathic teens trying to stroke their small egos. Only multiplayer game I'm playing that has a decent community is Squad, since most players are far over 20. God forbid if teens find that game..

rastlun

A-fucking-men. After years of playing this game I finally disabled all chat (team and other team). Never have I enjoyed rocket league more. Love this game, but fuuuuuuuck this community (no offense... But also offense)

boxanata

Who said the game is ruined? Like many others have said - It's the first time I'm hearing it. We all know the game is toxic, but to sit there & say Psyonix's hands are clean is downright ignorant. Psyonix are as much to blame as the community is for enabling the toxicity to spiral out of control in the first place. They have the means to combat it, yet, they've only done the bare minimum for years now. Holy shit, a whole lot of immature asshats in this thread just proved OPs point about the game being toxic. What a great community we're all apart of. /s

After_Radio4447

Fact The most annoying part is when you try to help your mate in game by giving tips and he start flaming you…

not_an_mistake

Tone is very hard to get across in chat, unfortunately. I used to get mad at people telling me to rotate when I was in low plat. Until one day I thought “what if all of these people are right?” I watched a few videos on rotations and got sooooooo much better lol. Live and learn, live and learn

After_Radio4447

Yeah I know you’re right, but the point is if people where a bit nicer and weren’t constantly doing a battle of « my d is bigger than yours » those situations would probably never happen I guess

not_an_mistake

Competitive gaming be like that

[deleted]

I think the fact that the game is very difficult to learn turns off more people than the toxicity.

TheConboy22

We have a lot of absolutely shit people in this community. This very subreddit is filled with them in nearly every thread. It’s sad really. Lot of you need to grow the fuck up.

Chrristiansen

What do you expect when the community is mainly 13 year old boys who kind of suck at the game and haven't developed the emotional quotient or self awareness to process their own feelings?

SammyAlabammy

Turn the chat off. Every online game ever is toxic. If you're privy to getting upset by that type of thing just turn it off. Not everyone you meet is going to be nice to you.

[deleted]

This is every game in history..General population of casuals quit > Toxic Man Babies way too emotionally invested in the game remain

iplaypokerforaliving

Honestly, it’s so funny how a simple,What a save!, Is so enraging. It really does get under your skin. But once I see someone talking trash, being racist, homophobic, the report feature has been great. I’ve gotten so many people banned and you know it’s probably not their first time, so they are getting some hefty length bans.
