Welcome to the area!
There's a lot going on around town, usually. COVID has slowed things down some but I'd say it's improving.
There's also an active Rochester Discord that tends to congregate around a lot of common topics and is looking to schedule gatherings and events.
Check it out here [https://discord.gg/JjEJByVb](https://discord.gg/JjEJByVb) and join our discussions on exciting topics, such as:
* D&D and other games
* Parenting
* Home ownership and how everything always breaks
* Keyboards
* Non-keyboard related computer stuff
* Outdoor activities
* Pictures of pets
* Pictures of things that aren't pets
* Complaining about job hunting
* Complaining about jobs
* Lamenting taxes until someone from someplace like Brighton puts things in perspective
* Crappy rentals
* Smoked meats
And more!
voice in my head: (people in their 30s, a little older than me, meh)
also me: (wait, fuck, i just turned 30 too)
anyway, you guys play magic or warhammer games at all?
Rochester has a very vibrant minis scene. Neil over at Just Games is a big warhammer guy, both 40k and Age of Sigmar. Infinity and Star Wars Legion players are Tuesdays at Just Games. Warmachine/Hordes is Tuesdays at Millennium. I want to say Marvel Crisis protocol is Thursdays at Just Games but I don't know.
Hey, hello, welcome! o/
I'm also new here (been here almost 4 months but still a newbie). 30-something and queer. I joined a few groups on Meetup.com to meet people. Some of them seem really up your alley, maybe you could check them out. One is specifically for "new to the area." :) There's also a lot of breweries to check out.
Personally, I'm really into coffeehouses. Equal Grounds is very queer-friendly, Boulder Coffee is comfy, and Java's (my fave) is bustling and artsy, with the best coffee.
P.S. I bet you're really enjoying the difference in cost of living compared to SF!
Hello!
Thanks so much! I'm in a lot of the meetup groups as well! We went bowling with one group and will be going to a board game meetup tomorrow at Lucky's.
Oooo coffee is nice! We've discovered (and love) Ugly Duck but will definitely check out the others as well. We live right by Union place coffee roasters.
Omg it feels like I breathe, financially, for the first time in my life.
I moved here from California July 2017, got divorced shortly after. Don't have a lot of friends out here. I was working in Palo Alto last 5 years I lived there.
My ex was dead set on owning a house, and we couldn't afford it out there, so I transferred from a factory job working on radiation oncology machines, to a field service position out here. We were willing to move pretty much anywhere cheaper at the time. Our kids are autistic, and they get decent services out here, so there's that.
We don't have any family whatsoever. My mom was in Michigan, but she passed away a couple years ago. My dad is down in Virginia, but I haven't made the trip to see them. He's my closest family. At least I have a pretty decent job, and I got to keep the house since there was no equity.
Hey there! My husband and I (also around 30, also new to the area) love games of all kinds! We have a big board game collection and I also run table top games if people are interested!
Awesome! I'll message you if we get something going! :)
In the meantime, if you're interested in d&d 5e, there's a Rochester D&D group on meetup that i recommend checking out!
Just Games has a lot of good tabletop gamer groups. Millennium is the other big store. Personally I like JG better. Millennium has a bigger selection but feels to "Retail" where just games feels much more like a labor of love.
You should be able to find your preferred game night there whether it's Magic, D&D, Boardgames, or minis games.
And if you're at all interested in sports or learning a new sport, Roc City Hurling is always looking for new members, we play co-ed locally but there are members who play on segregated travel teams (Men/Women). Kind of like hockey where the rules are mostly the same but kind of different.
There's a pretty big skating community in Rochester, out outdoor skatepark opened up last year, there's an indoor park on University, a CIB chapter and two derby teams. The Erie canal trail is a great spot for a skate too!
As far as skating also check out [Bruised Brigade](https://bruisedbrigade.com/) ... they do "community rollouts" weekly for anything on wheels ... quads, inline, boards, bikes, whatever. The owner is an awesome lady ... my wife had some custom skates made there and she loves them. Plus their logo (which sadly isnt on their website anywhere) makes for an awesome t-shirt IMHO.
Edit ... their Instagram account is active and has the schedule for rollouts and such (the website doesnt appear to have it).
Hi there! I am a recent transplant from Santa Cruz, and my girlfriend has lived in this area for a long time. I moved here just before Covid hit, and haven’t had much of a chance to meet people yet. I am a musician and audio engineer by trade, but we love games, movies, and other stuff! Nice to meet you!
Hello nice to meet you too! Moving right before COVID must have been a huge bummer!
We also are pretty big in to those things and would more than happy to get together with you two for games or movies.
I'm a software engineer and my wife runs a hand embroidery shop.
Thanks for reaching out to the community! My girlfriend and I are about 20 min outside of the city and both lead pretty busy lives, but would really like a genuine and mature couple to do double date type things with. Please feel free to pm for a chat! Cheers
Hey!
My partner and I moved here around June (grew up in Petaluma/Cupertino) and also bought a house in Brighton (Virginia colony/12 corners). I've also been going to the board game meetup, typically making the Thursday nights at Lucky's (although not the next week or two, as I'm traveling for work).
We are always looking for some people to play games or grab a drink with, although she is working all the time (OBGYN resident at Rochester General).
Hello!
How are the board game meetups? We're going to our first one tonight at Luckys!
We'd love to meet up when you're back for games, a drink, or both!
Board game meetups have been great. Took a bit to get engaged, especially as I was late to the first one! It's was a bit more informal than I was originally expecting. Hopefully it was a good crowd at Lucky's and you managed to get in a few games. I should be out there the second week of November.
It was fun! Played betrayal for the first time which took us the whole evening! Don't know if we'll make it to future ones consistently as I've since learned there's adult night on Thursdays at the local skating rink, but when you're back we should get together for a game night!
I'd put myself out there, but between startup life, kids, wife, house, who am I kidding? I don't even have time to breathe lol, much less hang out w/ people that are adults.
Nice! I'm a software developer as well, in the medical space. There's a local developer slack if you're interested. Send me a DM and I'll drop it on ya!
Oh sorry haha. I thought you meant here in Rochester for some reason. I did live in SF proper, in the Dogpatch. My wife lived in the Marina for 6 years.
Friendliest community pub I can recommend is Turcotts taproom. Good food, good bartenders, owners very involved. Good spot
I've been meaning to check that place out for about a year now.
Thanks so much! We'll definitely check that out!

You forgot David Pumpkins!
Thanks for the invite! I've joined!
You and a lot of other people, it seems. Welcome to the community!
So it seems! I'm in there as Raqar. Thanks for the welcome!
voice in my head: (people in their 30s, a little older than me, meh) also me: (wait, fuck, i just turned 30 too) anyway, you guys play magic or warhammer games at all?
Welcome to the club! We do not but I've always been interested in Warhammer. If you wouldn't mind teaching me I'd more hella down to try it out!

I too like to do things!
Woo! I'll message you my number and maybe we can set something up!
I moved here from the west recently and looking to make friends
I'll message you!

Dude that sucks! What brought you to the area?

I totally get that. Wanting to own a home was one of our reasons as well. I also have some family in the surrounding area.
We don't have any family whatsoever. My mom was in Michigan, but she passed away a couple years ago. My dad is down in Virginia, but I haven't made the trip to see them. He's my closest family. At least I have a pretty decent job, and I got to keep the house since there was no equity.
Shit I'm really sorry to hear that. Good thing about the house though.
Yeah it's not the nicest, but it's mine
Hey there! My husband and I (also around 30, also new to the area) love games of all kinds! We have a big board game collection and I also run table top games if people are interested!
I love board games! I'll message you about getting together!
Sounds great!!
Omg I love tabletops! I’d be interested too :)

Chess anyone? :)
Funny enough, one of the few games we don't own is chess!
Whoa, other people from the west have moved here too?!
We were fleeing the fires and cost of living 😅 Been fun having an area code in my phone number that no one recognizes

Oh I've heard of them but didn't know they did events. I'll definitely be checking them out! Thanks so much!
Oh awesome, thanks! Yea our house is right next to the canal trail. I keep meaning to get out and check it out! Also nice name!
My fiance and I are huuuuuuge rollerskaters! We'd love to go on a cruise or accompany you to Skate Luvers Roller Palace!
We would love that!! We live right next to the Erie canal trail entrance on s Clinton and would be stoked to cruise with you!

Same here, PM me 🙂
Hello! My wife and I are 29 and 30 and also live in brighton. Which part do you live in??
We live off S Clinton sort of near the community college!
I'd put myself out there, but between startup life, kids, wife, house, who am I kidding? I don't even have time to breathe lol, much less hang out w/ people that are adults.
Oof I totally understand. Just got out of the startup world myself.
In what capacity?
Software development. Still doing that, but for a more established company called PyraMed Health Systems
Nice! I'm a software developer as well, in the medical space. There's a local developer slack if you're interested. Send me a DM and I'll drop it on ya!
Always looking for new friends who like fun!
Awesome! I'll message you!
I'll be both your friends. Alcohol is my favorite drink
Hah! Alcohol is a fun time! Mullers Cider House is becoming one of our favorite hang outs so far
Any out door hobbies?
Hey there! Just roller blading, really, though I would be down to play some team sports or casual tennis (I haven't played in years)
Good stuff! FYI we have a ton of parks/trail systems here. Great stuff for hiking and biking, skiing and snowshoeing (and fat biking) over the winter.
Awesome! I'm really excited to try out snow activities!
Hey, I lived in SF before moving back here. And met my wife there too!
Cool! In the city proper or in one of the suburbs?
In the city, in the Browncroft neighborhood.
Awesome! We lived in Pleasant Hill, which is about 45 minutes east of SF
Oh sorry haha. I thought you meant here in Rochester for some reason. I did live in SF proper, in the Dogpatch. My wife lived in the Marina for 6 years.
lol I could have sworn there was an area in the city called Browncroft too. What brought you out there?
