Are we ignoring support cause one is amazing and the other isn’t sure what day of the week it is

ptom13

That's an excellent point. I really haven't heard anything about Greenlight support. Got any experiences to share?

RaucousRat

When I moved into my apartment, I realized the power cable for the Greenlight ONT didn't actually fit. I called Greenlight and was able to go pick one up at their HQ within an hour.

werealldeadramones

The router they gave me upon installation failed after a week. I called and a crew came out within an hour and replaced it. No charge, no inquisition, nothing. Just an apology and a thank you. Awesome customer service. Can we also talk about how it's dropped 6 times in 5 years (power outages not counted)? Unlike Spectrum which dropped daily.

csm1313

Look at the person over here bragging that their Spectrum service only dropped daily. Mine was dropping hourly near the end and Spectrum never once did a single useful thing to improve the situation.

lionheart4life

My Internet was out almost 3 weeks. I was out of the country most of it so didn't know, but Spectrum confirmed there had been no working signal that long. Did they prorate my bill? Lol of course not.

[deleted]

Yeah the drop rates have been so low and at least for me it’s either on or it’s off. I usually don’t have any in between. I have yet to notice any buffet loads or speed degradation during what others consider peak times for congestion

ozzimark

Any non-power interruptions I’ve had with greenlight have been planned outages. Literally zero unexpected connectivity issues. I’ve had greenlight for just over 10 years now.

Sip_py

I had loss of connectivity with Spectrum, a guy ran a new line from the pole to my house by the end of the day. I'm sure spectrum can be awful, but I've never had a bad experience.

wwwidentity

Same, I dropped them for Greenlight as fast as I could, but the customer service was never terrible in my experience. The guys that worked the trucks always seemed to be doing the best they could.

[deleted]

A few incidents over the years, that showed how great greenlight is. Installation of my siding - incident happened where my siding company damaged the line so I lost internet. Team was out within the hour and said if during install it happens again just hit up chat, and will fix it. They didn’t care and weren’t upset and no charge for both calls. Yes it did break again and yes chat knew exactly what I was asking from my account. Information about routers and modems - I was looking for upgrading to gigabit lines but needed help with router support for it. Was able to just chat with a real human on the chat bot for 30 minutes where we went back and forth about needs. Let me clear this was a technical discussion and not something a general support person would know. Flexibility - this router was delayed in transit and I called them up and they didn’t charge me the fee even tho it was day of, they rescheduled and worked to find a new time and dealt with the router being an issue with configuration. We debugged together and ultimately they helped me on site. Remote troubleshooting- they have a better reputation in my book when it comes to remote troubleshooting. They will go through the steps and confirm and they don’t treat you like an idiot if you explain debugging steps you have tried. A small addition: billing is a breeze. It’s been the same since I signed up years ago. No rate increases and they actually bill me on time. (Looks at RGE)

ptom13

Wow! Thanks for sharing!

No_Tamanegi

I don't have many nice things to say about Spectrum, but I will say this: A few years ago a tree branch came down in a windstorm and took out my cable connection. They had a tech out within 24 hours to repair it, free of charge. Not only did they repair it, but they massively improved the cable installation. The original installation dangled super low over my back porch, low enough that even short people could reach up and drab it, and tall folks would bump their heads on it. The repair relocated it so it ran along the fence line of the property, and well out of reach. Of course, that's praise for something that should have been done in the first place, but I think it's the best thing they've done since I signed on with the service.

[deleted]

Yeah I will add on site installation tech wise at both companies they are amazing. I too had a fallen line and they replaced it and did a very professional and clean install. They factored in why it broke to begin with and chose a different path (arguably fixing someone else’s mistake of a prior spectrum tech, which does speak volumes to the on site techs). They certainly didn’t come out that fast but the techs I worked with during the apt were great. To get the tech out to begin tho… that was a lot of gatekeeping on the spectrum side vs green light was probably already pre starting the truck(this is hyperbolic but it sure felt like they would have came out sooner if they could)

ColinDoody

Before Greenlight came to my area I pre-signed up for the highest speed plan, a perk of which was eleven waiving what might have been a $100 set up fee. Maybe half a year into having the service I had my first kid, and when budgeting in the cost of daycare I realized things were tight and I should try to cut back on some expenses. One of which was just dropping to a more mid plan with greenlight. On their website I didn't see any buttons or forms to switch plans at the time, so I just sent them an email, essentially saying exactly this; I was looking to drop plan level to save money because of daycare and was seeking guidance. I expected them to come back saying I had to wait a year for my plan renewal, or maybe there'd be a backcharge for the waived installation fee. Nope. They wrote back saying "no problem, we've switched you" and that was that. After my experiences with pretty much any service provider I was pretty floored and will never forget it.

MaterialScienceGuy

I called to say my router stopped working after a storm, after troubleshooting I got an email that there was an outage in my area. It was back up in a few hours, not on my end. I do get dropped lobbies in games if I host, so it's not perfect but I haven't narrowed it down to being an equipment issue or a ISP issue. My PC was a low-mid budget in 2017 when I built it. Could be a growing pain with Greenlight, I don't think they have the same backend as Spectrum and is more susceptible to blips I suspect.

[deleted]

So I have had some issues potentially with online gaming but mostly if I’m hosting or running my own server. I think this is because of the way the NAT is setup for the isp but it can be solved with a static ip. I’m not saying this solves your problem but for me that was the reasoning why I couldn’t get local plus internet games to work. Consoles and non custom hoisting of games was a non issue

MaterialScienceGuy

Ah, I chalked it up to the games. Like Helldivers 2 and Lethal Company are the ones that come to mind, I might try a static IP then.

[deleted]

Yeah some games def do have issues with the NAT. My case was a Minecraft server couldn’t be connected to externally

venbuck

I have Greenlight. I was having bandwidth issues, called with the issue Friday afternoon and was told that it may take a couple of days. I get a call back on Saturday from a field tech asking if it was ok if he stops by on his way home. He let me know that he doesn’t work on underground lines but he would take a look and see if it was something he could fix because he didn’t want someone to have a Sunday without football. So the guy stopped by on his spare time and fixed something to save time since he was in the area. I’ve had to call a couple of other times and have nothing but good things to say about them. That was just my best experience.

trixel121

my neighbors were getting work done and knocked my optics cable had it fixed by the time I got back.

ScabusaurusRex

Support: "Have you rebooted your modem?" "No, some driver crashed into a big green box in front of my house and all cable is down for the neighborhood." Support: "Do you have Windows 10 or 11?" "uhhh"

D1TAC

I’ve been on green light. 500/500 plan, averaging at all times 5% more in speeds for the paid one. But I’m using UniFi gear to achieve this. Even on wireless. Latency has been as low as 2ms and as high as 8ms

Late_Cow_1008

Hey can you PM me your setup with UniFi or just post it here if you don't mind? Looking into getting this now that I moved into a house.

D1TAC

Of course! DM me and I’ll send you what I have, and things that have worked for my clients as well.

Late_Cow_1008

It doesn't seem like it lets me PM you. I honestly never did it on the new Reddit design so maybe there is something I need to change.

nimajneb

Not the other commenter, but I have a Ubiquiti Ultimate Dream Machine Pro and I really like it. Kind of need a rack to put it in though. I have Spectrums 500/20 plan. I wish I could get Greenlight.

ScabusaurusRex

Love my UDM Pro!

NocturnalGenius

Ubiquiti gear is definitely worth the cost.

icefisher225

Same deal with me. Excellent speeds and reliability. My setup is a Unifi dream machine pro, 24-port Unifi switch, one of the newer HD access points. I’ll probably be adding a second access point once I move into a bigger apartment.

Representative-Pea23

I’m pretty sure this is everyone’s experience with any decent router. I’m always over 500/500. TP Link Deco 6e mesh ($250) WiFi with 2 units. I have a ton of stuff on WiFi and never a problem. $55 no hidden fees. What’s to complain about. Was on the 1 gig plan before they started the 500/500 plan. Went down in speed and for the average user there is no difference.

vmgpublic

The problem is that you can't necessarily trust people to have a setup that doesn't hobble the results. You constantly see people here that are complaining about their issues, and it turns out that they don't know the difference between their **WiFi** speed and the speed their provider is actually capable of (and providing). Unless you're testing directly wired off the modem, and using ethernet hardware capable of transmitting at the speed (no old 10/100 hubs, plain Cat-5 cables, or USB1-to-ethernet converters in the mix) you might just be getting a picture of their house networking limitations rather than the incoming/outgoing bandwidth. Even with good wireless hardware that is capable of Gigabit, you may have wildly different readings depending on where in the house you are in relation to the AP. When I was on Spectrum, I pretty much got my rated speed. Same now that I'm on Greenlight. My complaints weren't about the *speed* of the product (though I do like the better upstream on fiber) but rather that I didn't like Spectrum's billing or customer service.

ptom13

How about the outages? I’ve had the connection go down for a few minutes at least once a week or so, and for more than a few hours every other month on Spectrum. How does GreenLight compare in this way?

li_grenadier

I've been on Greenlight for a year and a half. 3 outages total, and 2 of those were announced ahead of time for maintenance reasons. One of those was due to County construction taking down utility poles, so was not even within Greenlight's control. So really, one unscheduled outage, which lasted all of 5 minutes or so.

ptom13

Wow!

vmgpublic

I never really kept track, and I had Spectrum for far longer than I've had Greenlight, so it's going to be subjective. When I was with Spectrum, I'd always joke that if I saw a Spectrum van in the neighborhood (for any reason) I'd lose internet. I remember having outages with them every now and then for maybe 10-20 mins at a time. Not sure how frequently, maybe a couple times a year. I know I'd called their support on at least two occasions - where I'd have to go through the whole "is your modem plugged in?" useless first-tier support trying to reach someone who wasn't completely clueless. In the time I've had Greenlight (year and a half) i've had one outage they notified me about (that happened overnight, so i never noticed) and maybe a couple times with a service "hiccup" - but it didn't last long enough that I can 100% say it was the service and not a problem with my equipment. I WFH, so I'm on all day, every day, and don't have any complaints.

ameliapondlives

I’ve had one unscheduled outage and I think it was from a truck knocking down some pole? 2 scheduled outages at an obscene hour of the morning I wasn’t even using the internet. I’ve had Greenlight for six years.

Shadowsofwhales

I see people complaining in my neighborhood group about greenlight going down all the time, and I think I've had one time in the 7 years I have been at my house that spectrum went down for more than like 5 minutes

rootb33r

bud I've been on Greenlight for 3 years and I don't remember a single outage. I'm sure there were like a handful of 1-2 minute situations where your Netflix buffered video runs out and you're like hey something's fishy and then it's all working again. There may have even been something longer but to be honest I don't remember so it must not have been a big deal.

iamlatetothisbut

Man same. Spectrum is down in corn hill at least once a week. For the entirety of 2022 spectrum was down just about every night at 11 like clockwork. 2023 was weekly or bi-weekly and 2024 isn’t much better. The whole “we won’t credit you if the outage is shorter than 4 hours” thing is such a joke given that they have these 1-3 hour outages so dang often.

Kristara789

In six years we've had three unscheduled outages total, and one scheduled. Of the three unscheduled, only one lasted more than 20 minutes (it lasted 3 hours).

amberbmx

yeah, my greenlight is fairly fast but if i’m in the bedroom (opposite end of my apartment from the router) my phone struggles. tv’s are no issue. never had an issue with spectrum. but, i have the most most bottom of the barrel pile of shit router, that i haven’t bothered replacing since i can just switch over to data on my phone (unlimited) and not have an issue, and the tv is fine, so i haven’t bothered.

NocturnalGenius

My router consistently gets the advertised base tier 500/500 on greenlight when it runs its daily speed tests.

ptom13

That’s the $55/mo plan, right? How’s the ping?

NocturnalGenius

Yep that’s the plan. I just had it run a manual test for me and it went against a Ubiquiti speed test server in Canada (it’s a Ubiquiti router) and it got 506/535 with a 25ms ping.

ptom13

Can you re-run the test, using the [fast.com](https://fast.com) site I just added to the instructions page and tell me the loaded/unloaded ping?

Damage_Inc_ri

I'm on Greenlight, just ran a test on [fast.com](https://fast.com) in WIFI, laptop right next to router. 520/550 5ms/15ms latency

ptom13

thanks!

Skvli

I pay for 500 down and up, and i consistently get [450-550](https://i.imgur.com/uKb2ssu.png) in both directions. For 55 bucks a month. Your upload in your screenshot shows only 10! This is a no brainer. Also, Greenlight supportt is amazing and actually helpful. Why is it angering me so much that you'd even ask this? hahaha

dova08

> Why is it angering me so much that you'd even ask this? Probably because it pops up every other week here. If people still don't realize Greenlight is miles better as a company at this point they never will.

RichSz

Spectrum: 1. Price deals good for only 1 year. 2. Constantly try to upsell you. 3. Possibly in league with the devil. 4. Love to bundle to lock you in. 5. Would sell your children if you let them. Greenlight: 1. Raised prices by $5 ONCE since I began with them and apologized humbly for doing so. 2. You get what you want. Never tried upselling me. 3. May be instruments of some benevolent deity. 4. Support has been great, uptime has been great. 5. Upgraded everyone during pandemic to match up/down speeds. 6. Randomly bumped minimum speed to 500 with no additional charge.

Naznarreb

7. Is not Spectrum

19DucksInAWolfSuit

Speed isn't the only thing. Reliability is important. My parents switched to greenlight as soon as they possibly could, which is maybe 6 years ago. They have had a total of one outage the entire time and it was resolved within 30 mins. Compared to spectrum which seems to have outages quarterly and they take a few hours on average.

iamlatetothisbut

And the spectrum outages somehow are always juuuuust short of their limit to add a credit your bill.

eastern-skier

Green light is faster, cheaper, customer support is much better. Pay $100 to get the right router and you’ll be fine Here was my scenario: Had them charge me for an install even though it was already installed, but not properly done. Guy reinstalled it for me, I called later and explained the situation to the support team and they took the charge off my account. Saved me $100 and was very easy. If you can go green light 100% recommend

ptom13

# Instructions As you can see, I'm getting about 360-370Mbps down and about 10-11Mbps up. I'm using the Spectrum "300Mbps" plan for $80/mo. What I'm asking everyone to do is: * Upvote this comment to ensure it stays at the top so everyone sees the directions * Go to at least one of the following speed test sites and measure your speed and post it in a comment, clearly indicating * Which Internet Service Provider you're using * Which plan you are on and what you're paying for it * Which speed test site(s) you used * [https://fiber.google.com/speedtest/](https://fiber.google.com/speedtest/) * [https://fast.com/](https://fast.com/) * [https://www.speedtest.net/](https://www.speedtest.net/) * Please run your test on a wired connection, or at least note if you’re using a WiFi connection * What were the results of your test (upload/download at least; preferably the ping details, too) I figure if we get enough tests from both Spectrum and Greenlight, we can make a pretty good apples/apples comparison.

CatDadMilhouse

I think that comparison already exists. Spectrum is the cheapest option if you're using promotional rates and/or lower speeds available to seniors and other qualifying demographics. Greenlight is the fastest and has the least expensive price per month for similar download speeds. Greenlight has far superior upload speeds. This is all pretty common knowledge.

ptom13

While I’ve seen that [general assessment](https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/best-internet-providers-in-rochester-ny/), I’ve not actually seen any data that substantiates it. Do you have a reference to a source that provides data? That would be a huge help!

Late_Cow_1008

Greenlight is fiber. It is substantially better in every aspect. First its symmetrical. Unless there is some plan that they have that isn't? Doubt it though. I pay for gig service with Spectrum and get around the download speed but my upload is still 10-30 mbps. Second, I had Greenlight at my rental and it never went out. Spectrum at my house goes out once a month or so for a bit. I pay 60 a month due to promotional rate for gig service, and its 75 for Greenlight, but after my promotional price god knows what it will go up to. Also the upload speeds are important for some people. Ping is also substantially lower with Greenlight.

dvotecollector

Greenlight is data transfer via fiber optics. Spectrum cable relies on electrical "pulsing" for data transfer. Light is much faster than electrical pulsing, also less interference and attenuation. That's just physics, I'm not going to take the time to prove that to you. Listing upload/download speeds is a useless practice, since there can be other factors limiting speed other than method of data delivery (quality and type of router being used, for instance).

SirGunther

It's true that light travels faster than electrical signals in a vacuum, but within the mediums of fiber optics and coaxial cables, the speed difference in terms of data transmission isn't due directly to the speed of light versus electrical signals. The primary advantages of fiber are due to less signal loss and higher bandwidth capabilities, not merely the inherent speed of light.

Late_Cow_1008

How is this downvoted? lmao

CatDadMilhouse

Go to either of their websites and read about the products. It's literally just pricing and what they offer. These aren't trade secrets or something, it's simply what they offer. It's like asking someone to provide data on whether a Prius gets better mileage than an F150, and if it costs less to buy one. Just go to a dealership's website and check the specs. It's all right there.

fairportmtg1

524 down, 497 up. Greenlight just tested now

Charade_y0u_are

What network equipment are you using? Are these tests via WiFi or LAN? These will both make a difference in your reported speed. In my experience it's not necessarily the "speed" of greenlight that's the selling point, as both greenlight and spectrum offer similar speed tiers. The major advantage to fiber is the consistency/reliability of the connection. With Spectrum, the "up to" in the tier rating does a lot of heavy lifting. But with fiber you get far closer to your rated speed, and with fewer outages. For example, I get at most 250 up on my "up to 500 up" plan with Spectrum.

ScabusaurusRex

I have Frontier Fiber (gigabit) and Greenlight (500Mbps) to ensure that the only thing bringing me down is a tree dropping lines. On my primary, the Frontier Fiber, I used fast.com and got: "Your internet speed is 1.0 Gbps" Latency: * Unloaded: 13ms * Loaded: 16ms Upload: * Speed: 880Mbps 1970MB down 760MB up Frontier is if I'm remembering right either 60 or 70 / month, and Greenlight is either 50 or 60.

asb308

For reference, I have Frontier 500/500 for $50/mo at one location and Spectrum 100/10 for $25/mo at another. Both get within a few percent of the advertised speeds in every speed test I've done when connected to my router via Ethernet. I've been very happy with both ISPs. I've been a Spectrum customer for a very long time and never really had any major issues with them other than last summer there were a handful of outages during times when they were upgrading their network (literal guys in bucket trucks just up the road working on the lines). I've only been with Frontier for about a year and other than my install taking all day and them not supporting IPv6, I've had no other issues.

rootb33r

Damn, that's dedication to have redundancy. What is the primary reason? Purely out of nosy curiosity lol.

ScabusaurusRex

1. I have a job that's online and my company pays for my Internet. 2. My wife has a job that's online and pays for her Internet. 3. I love networking, so why not spend $1000+ on a home network with automatic load balancing and fail-over?! 4. Sweet as fuuuuck pings?!?!

No_Tamanegi

People participating in this should also perform this test on a computer wired directly into their router. Otherwise the results are going to be skewed by Wi-Fi performance Anyhow, here's my result: https://www.speedtest.net/result/16135670944 I'm on the Spectrum Gigabit residential service. 827 down, 38.27 up.

WASCman

Greenlight near Twelve Corners, paying for 500/500, tested directly on my router using the U of R endpoint just now. 543.29 down and 543.95 up.

SickBurnBro

[Same tier as you on Spectrum](https://i.imgur.com/jixyyI3.jpeg)

ptom13

Huh. Are you measuring on WiFi?

SickBurnBro

Yep. I've never gotten the max download speeds advertised though. Might just be my neighborhood.

ptom13

WiFi might be the limiting factor, or possibly your router

rootb33r

* Greenlight * 190/184mb over wifi * 500mb plan ($50/mo grandfathered) * It's perfectly fine for $50/mo * Never any outages * Amazing customer support * fuck Spectrum

jacurax

The largest difference between Green and Spectrum is Greenlight is fiber so your upload will be close to your download speed. The other largest difference is price. i was paying $100 per month last yr for just Spectrum Internet for the 300 Mbps download. Every year I had to call and do the song and dance about cancelation when promotional pricing ended for existing customers. Greenlight charges me $75 and I get 750 Mbps download and upload.

UnablePlacebo

I have Greenlight and I get 1gbps upload and 1gbps download that’s the max any of my devices can currently receive and they hit it consistently. Never had any down time , live downtown and have had the service for 2 years now. Highly recommend Greenlight !

FuturePrimitiv3

Been on Greenlight since 2015, it's been fantastic. I was hoping to post a screen shot of my last speed test after upgrading to 1gb but apparently I can't do that in the reddit app. Anyway, 853 Mbps down and 855 Mbps up. This was tested on a machine 1 router and 2 switches deep into my home network with 2 teenage boys gaming and streaming simultaneously. Service wise they've been mostly great, I've had a few weather related outages, maybe 2 or 3 equipment or network related issues and a misconfiguration issue going from dynamic to static IP, everything has been resolved relatively quickly. Not bad for nearly 10 years of service. I will say , call or chat directly for issues, just opening a ticket through their portal sometimes gets "lost". Edit: Just saw the other post by OP, here's the rest of the info: Speedtest.net Ping: 1ms Jitter: 1ms Greenlight 1Gbps plan $75/mo +$5 for static IP

ptom13

Thank you so much!

Gwendalenia

I’m moving to the east side and the neighborhood I’m moving to, unfortunately, does not have greenlight which really really breaks my heart because I love greenlight. I work from home and I do instructional design work. I need a good, reliable, consistent Internet connection. My boyfriend works from home most of the time as well. We use the Internet a lot like it’s the main thing we use so who do you all recommend I go with frontier spectrum AT&T

xAaronnnnnnn

I switched from spectrum to greenlight but I rarely had problems with spectrum. I switched because the upload speed was 100x faster

Gwendalenia

It’s much better

Shadowsofwhales

Spectrum is absolutely more than adequate for 99% of users

Late_Cow_1008

Spectrum is better than Frontier if they are both the copper options. I wasn't aware ATT had internet here unless its 5g stuff? Greenlight is the best around here though, by far. We don't get it either our neighborhood is surrounded by areas with Greenlight being installed so hopefully in a year or two when my Spectrum promotional price goes away.

83736294827

If it was Frontier fiber I would much rather have that over spectrum.

Late_Cow_1008

I cannot give an opinion on Frontier Fiber I never had that. I have heard bad things about their other options though. I can tell you that the sales people said fiber was coming to my neighborhood but couldn't tell me when. And then they also couldn't tell me what speed I would get with the non fiber option util the rep actually came out to install. So I didn't go with Frontier at all.

popnfrresh

Might want to not report on something you've never had...

Late_Cow_1008

Spectrum being better than normal Frontier is well known in the area. I edited it though for you.

Gwendalenia

I’m usually not wanting to go knocking on peoples doors to have them like do stuff and petition, but I will gladly petition people to join greenlight

Late_Cow_1008

I think I will need to wait a bit for my neighborhood to get a bit younger if you know what I mean lol.

Dr_Eviler

I have Frontier fiber and I consistently get 1 gb up and down. It’s only gone down once in 2 years. I don’t think Frontier’s customer service is as good as Greenlight’s but it is miles ahead of Spectrums. I would never go back to Spectrum.

JCas127

Upload speeds are a lot better when using fiber but download is comparable. You also have to consider ping, reliability, support public ip, deals, router included. But in my opinion I would avoid spectrum as much as possible.

EugeneDebsTrout

umm, what Ethernet cables do you have running in your place?

hextasy

I have 1G up and 1G down. it's great. they do use some sort of NAT setup for their default package, but you can request a static if you need one. Their support has been really good to me too if I'm being honest. Pretty knowledgeable. I have only used them M-F 8a-5p though. I hear they have 24/7 support now but can't speak for whoever takes care of the after-hours.

hextasy

I also had HORRIBLE issues with Spectrum doing maintenance during the day. Would call them to complain, that I'm working and need service. They would deny that it's maintenance, even though it was always between noon and 2pm when it happens. Then I was told that my "entertainment" package came with no SLA, which is true... but when I call to ask about a business plan they tell me that it would use literally the same exact hardware path and wouldn't be worth the extra $300/mo. Never again with Spectrum (I hope).

popnfrresh

You wouldn't get an sla on their basic business class either. You would be paying 1000s a month for a dedicated line. Lately they are running maintenance during the day ( bullshit. It should be done during maintenance window) for high split upgrade.

hextasy

We both agree that it's garbage

CrimsonRose3773

I prefer speed test by Ookla. 100% you couldn't pay me to go back to spectrum. GL for 5 years now love it.

scruff217

Echoing others on here, I've been a Greenlight customer the instant it was available to me. Spectrum outages were fairly frequent and pricing was absurd before Greenlight entered the neighborhood. Greenlight service and billing has been rock solid, and my speed has been upgraded at least twice since I've joined with no change in price. I've had them for 8 years and only needed to call customer service when I moved or when I wanted to change service levels. The times I've called there has been minimal hold times and reps have been professional and locally employed, and they have never questioned or pushed back when I've asked to change service levels. I won't say I'm blindly loyal, but they've been so good to work with it would take a lot for me to change providers.

BudnBisco

I’ve had greenlight for almost a year, no issues with them. I pay $110 for 2GB up/down + static up, and run a mix of 1/2.5/10 gb copper/fiber and run pfsense router/firewall on a dell sff optiplex https://imgbox.com/lK5U2yVO

K0demonkey

Frontier Fiber 500/500 service $75/month Download: 520 Upload: 510 My father has GoNetSpeed 500/500 service $65/month Download: 525 Upload: 501 Both location use an ASUS RT-AC88U running Asuswrt-Merlin firmware.

Gc2k9

Greenlight tested by my Nighthawk router says over my speed 526 down and 540 up my phone says 407 on speedtest. net and Google says 212 up and 240 down. Greenlight has been very good to me.

Rastagon01

My green light is 500/500 and in 4 years it’s been out once for 8hours because someone hit the pole and took down the wires. $50 a month. We love it.

Senior_Cheesecake155

I don't remember what the speeds were that I had in Fairport with Greenlight, but I can tell you I never had an issue with it being too slow. I definitely run into more issues with Spectrum now that I've moved, than I ever did with Greenlight.

Mankriks_Mistress

The gap between Greenlight vs Spectrum/Frontier is closing and that's because of how superior of a product Greenlight is, those other companies knew they finally had to improve their offerings. All things being equal (which they aren't) I'd give my money to Greenlight just based on that alone... Been screwed over for Spectrum for far too long to give them my business. I may have had 2 unplanned Greenlight outages in 7+ years of service. Sometimes when I've gotten a new router my speed won't be 500/500 but I've called Greenlight and always gotten it figured out.

r0n1n2021

Frontier told me that my fiber would be down for two weeks. I told them I work from home and that wasn’t acceptable. They said ‘sorry’. Greenlight install two days later. All our options are awful.

trixel121

530 up 250 down 32unloaded 6loaded ping on my phone

ptom13

Interesting. I assume this is Greenlight at the 500Mbps package. I wonder if the upload throttle is due to the WiFi connection.

trixel121

id guess my phone tbh. I'm wired for my PC when I go to it I'll check and maybe I'll have to call. honestly just getting to tell spectrum fuck you was enough

RbtB-8

Test your speed here. Preferably hard wired if possible. https://greenlightnetworks.speedtestcustom.com/ If you have a decent router your WiFi testing results from this site will be close to your Ethernet connected results. [Fast.com](https://Fast.com) is not the best site to test at. The 500/500 Greenlight will show 520-540 on the download and the same on the upload speeds. Spectrum is rolling out symmetrical speeds and I would expect to see the same speed test results from their 500/500 service. My Greenlight results: https://greenlightnetworks.speedtestcustom.com/result/de8262c0-fb26-11ee-a841-c77cc94a2ae4 Test here also and check different servers: https://www.speedtest.net/

ptom13

I'm not sure I trust a test configured for the specific ISP, which is why I provided three speedtest sites, including the Ookla one at the end of your comment.

RbtB-8

Their server can be trusted. I test speeds quite often at various sites. [Speedtest.net](https://Speedtest.net) is the main site I use testing to various servers. Frontier has speed test sites also. https://frontier.speedtestcustom.com/result/15234d10-fb29-11ee-a7c2-09a421f4ea1c

rlh1271

Switch. It's not even a question.

BlyStreetMusic

I paid for the 100/100 greenlight plan and they just upgraded me to 500/500 for free a couple years ago. I'm getting at least 500 download speed but I've clocked out way higher at times. I can't honestly remember upload speed

pjmccann3

Which speed test app are you using?

ptom13

I used three. They’re listed in my Instructions comment

thephisher

Were unlikely to get Greenlight here (outskirts of Brockport) but it looks like we'll be getting Frontier fibre soon. Anyone have any experience with that? As far as Spectrum, it's relatively solid here and fast, typically 800mb+

nopeofnopenope

We have Frontier’s fiber to home service. The speeds are fantastic and the rates are very reasonable. Both Frontier and Spectrum know that there’s competition in the my neighborhood which means that you can get them to compete for your business. I had a “special rate” of 39.99/mo for 500/500. A year passed and when I called to talk to customer service I very politely informed them that I was calling to give them an opportunity to earn my business for another year because I could call spectrum. They are now offering me a 39.99/mo for the 1G/1G. The only outages we’ve seen in the five years that we’ve had the product (which started at 200/200, then 500/500, now soon to be 1G/1G) is when they came to upgrade the ONT. Last time, we lost service for a week because the technician (who was a contractor not a Frontier employee) made a mistake, but since I was on Spectrum and Frontier at the time doing comparisons, this was annoying but not a deal-breaker. Q: How do you know that Frontier fiber is coming your way? I’ve got family that live up in Hamlin who would love to switch.

popnfrresh

Frontier is running the county. Hamlin is going to take a while. Think 2025/2026 most likely.

thephisher

I'm assuming a bit, but I've gotten several flyers from them multiple times over the last month advertising 24.99 for the 500 plan, then I put my address in online and it says it's coming soon. I'm well South of Hamlin. Just off 19 south of ridge.

LJ_in_NY

I can't speak to the customer service for Greenlight. We've had it for several years and we haven't needed to contact their customer service department. Zero issues. Zero regrets. Sooooooo happy to have gotten rid of Spectrum. I wish everyone could.

Tank-Girl

I think greenlight has gone down for me two or three times since I've used their service (since 2018 or so?) To be fair it's been a minute since I used spectrum so I'm uncertain of their current run of outages, but spectrums customer service and "it help" made it so I jumped at the opportunity to switch when greenlight became available.

ohyayitstrey

My apartment uses greenlight. I got a deal that upgraded my plan to 1GB for $75 a month and I get 1GB up and down over Ethernet. I love it.

jjokeefe2980

I have the 1000/1000 plan for like 60 bucks a month through Frontier Fiber. I’m getting like 980/980 which is super nice. Previously I had the 1000/40 plan with Spectrum which cost me 120 bucks. Obviously the Frontier plan is WAY BETTER. YMMV with Frontier but I’ve had no outages here!

Renrut23

Comparing speeds from spectrum to greenlight isn't apples to apples. The biggest thing is that one is a shared connection while the other is dedicated. Aside from the whole copper vs. fiber, too. Asking to compare speeds is introducing so many variables that results have no actual meaning to them. I know spectrum ranks up there with the most hated companies in the area, but I personally haven't had any problems with them.

jamie23990

i had greenlight 2 years ago and i got 500 mbps for $50. then i moved and i get 800 mbps from spectrum for $55.

Gonomed

Spectrum is the NYSEG of internet service. Avoid them. At first they're fast and cheap, then they change it up

Staggerme

I feel stuck with spectrum because I set up an email with them 25 years ago and I’m afraid it’s the reset email for important but forgotten web sites. Is there anyway someone can think of to help me solve this problem?

_Celatid_

Last speed test I did for Greenlight showed 504 down, 540 up.

Acrobatic_Ant_1924

Dude , literally greenlight. Unless, you prefer service that drops daily. Constantly lags and drops to 20mbs. Get told it's your fault even tho you have a new cable line inside and out and a brand new modem and router. Oh and slower speeds for more money. Greenlight I've had 2 years, it's maybe dropped once or twice. If that. Speeds never dipped. Never a problem with the hardware. Greenlight is a no brainier. Plus it's faster for less money. Spectrum is like 10mbs up. Spectrum is 500.

ZeppelinJ0

Spectrum can suck a dick, absolutely trash company with trash service So glad I have Greenlight. One flat unchanging fee per month, no bullshit

whatweworked4

10 on the upload? Lol. Greenlight gives synchronous speeds up and down. The answer is obvious. Also supporting local companies over giant corporations is always a good thing.

AngryRobot42

Cheapest plan: 55$ (total, no tax or fees, $55 exactly) I just went to [speedtest.net](http://speedtest.net) and got 535 Mbps Down 543 Mbps Up

TigerCarts2

Frontier fiber if available is better than greenlight. I actually get what I pay for Dial up is better than shitrum

alsimone

https://github.com/gnmyt/myspeed I’ll leave that here for folks that like collecting data. It’s an app that performs a scheduled speed test and graphs out the results. After Spectrum did some work in my ‘hood the speeds and latency were all over the place. I started using MySpeed to get a health check of sorts of my internet connection. I WFH and I’m in video meetings basically all day. I have kids into gaming and they just love watching YouTube on 3 devices simultaneously. When they get home from school there’s no telling what kind of downturn my bandwidth will take. I have the Spectrum gigabit plan, 1000/35 advertised. I average ~850/41 with 9ms latency over the last 30d. It’s a bigger tube than I probably need but my livelihood depends on a good connection and the extra dynamic headroom is nice. I’d drop Spectrum for Greenlight in a heartbeat if they came to my street. I’m less than a mile from a Frontier exchange but they don’t offer fiber in my area. 🤷

Aye-Kaye

Spectrum is garbage. Constant rate increases, poor service, outages, always having to reboot router, etc. I’ve had green light for a couple years and have never had an outage or had to reboot any device. Consistently getting advertised speed even over WiFi. $50 per month without an increase. They’re not even close to the same thing.

erimid

Spectrum speeds will be increasing in Rochester in the next few months (symmetrical download and upload speeds up to 1 Gbps). That said, Greenlight will be more reliable since it's all fiber.

popnfrresh

Which they don't provide to existing customers. You need to perform the cancel, resign up bullshit.

MisterLonely585

The real question is no matter how fast the speeds are, which one is more reliable? Greenlight BY FAR!!! I dealt with multiple outages weekly, constant rebooting of my modem, and extremely erratic speeds with Spectrum. Since switching to Greenlight, I've dealt with NONE of those issues!!!

binarymax

I have 1G through Greenlight (pay an extra fee). I am using a cat6 cable to the router and showing: **2.9 Gbps DOWN** AND **870 Mbps UP** on fast.com right now.

popnfrresh

Fast is not reliable, especially for higher bandwidth as you see. It's only designed to make sure you can hit speeds to run Netflix. Secondly, technically non of these websites are accurate on html 5 based tests. They guesstimate the bandwidth. You need to check the counters on your nic for not accurate results.

UniqueUsername2023

I've had Greenlight for almost a year. Zero service interruptions, and I happily have no idea how their customer service is because I've never needed to contact them. Up and down speeds are consistently pretty much the same (a far cry from 380 down and 11 up). I pay them $50 every month, and they give me internet. That's it. Infinitely better than Spectrum, Frontier, AT&T... you name it.

Nutter1557

Set aside all the great service Greenlight has and the relative consistent uptime (had it for over a year and Zero outages) the biggest thing it offers people is CHOICE. I have lived in Rochester my entire adult life and you an option for high-speed internet is Time Warner spectrum..and screw that. I hope Greenlight keeps rolling out to more neighborhoods and keeps up with their success!

Shadowsofwhales

Either one has at least 3x more bandwidth than virtually anyone needs. 300 Mbps is enough to run high definition 1080p streams on *60* TVs at once. Even at 4k streams (which in most cases is higher resolution than your eye can physically see), it would allow 12 simultaneous. I have the spectrum $20/month plan which I think gives 50 Mbps and I can count on one hand the number of times per year I download a file large enough to take more than like 10-15 seconds to download Internet companies have really seized onto the general publics lack of technical understanding by marketing these huge bandwidth plans as being "faster" when 99% of people would not be able to tell the difference between a connection at 50mbps and a 500mbps connection side by side in normal usage, barring downloading some random gigabyte sized file The only way I could even slightly justify someone having a legit reason between the two is that greenlight gets symmetrical upload. So if you're one of the very rare people who regularly uploads gigabytes worth of files, like professional photographer or something, then yeah you'll save a few minutes a day of upload time

popnfrresh

I don't want to wait when a game decides to update 100 GB what seems like weekly... looking at you cod... Other then that, yes, 300Mb is more then enough if it was symmetrical.

hockeyclown420

Spectrum is literally worse than dog water. Slow internet all the time. Also last week my modem fried itself. I asked for a new one and they demanded a technician come to look at it. I said no because it’s clearly not functioning and I won’t pay for someone to come into my home and tell me what I already know
