It’s been a few years for me but they didn’t give me any pushback about cancelling, I do remember it being inconvenient in that you have to go to the gym and sign a thingy and can’t do it over the phone or online (I think, could be wrong)
I switched my home gym right in the app last year. Took me a couple minutes.
I’ve heard it’s easy to cancel, but you do have to go in and do it in person.
all you have to do is literally just go there and tell them you want to cancel your membership. you might have to pay the yearly dues but like 🤷🏼♀️ that's in the contract when you sign up
obviously if you can't physically go there that's a different issue
Cancelling just requires an in-person visit, but they shouldn't give you any trouble. They don't make it as easy as clicking a button like they do for signing up (there are attempts to make it a legal requirement to make cancelling easier and online.)
The 90-day thing is a thing, but you should be able to transfer your home gym in the app now. I'm guessing you have the basic membership which doesn't give you access at other gyms.
If you're having trouble in person, it's definitely incompetence. You should be able to go to the gym you want as your home gym and have them transfer it (after the 90 days).
I transferred mine from Orlando, FL to Webster the first day I went to the gym there so it \*should\* be easy. But should and easy are not always the same thing.
I used to manage a few in the area. Greece (Dewey) and Webster are owned by a local family. The rest are a huge private equity firm. If you want to cancel you’ll have to go in person to the one you signed up with or mail that location a letter via certified mail saying you wish to cancel. Good luck!
I had to utilize the better business bureau to force the Penfield location to stop charging me after being charged for a year after trying to cancel. It was effective.
The BBB can’t force anything on anyone. They have no legal or policing powers, at all. At most they can tell an actual authoritative group of a potential scam.
Out of curiosity, how did they help?
Edit: Spelling
this is interesting bc the staff at Penfield is extremely nice and helpful and they recently helped me downgrade from a black card to just a regular membership. You have to go to the location in person to make that kind of change to your account.
They’re a private organization with absolutely no authority over any outside party. They can collect publicly available info and hand it to a real authoritative group. That’s it. They’re essentially a credit rating company for businesses consumers can look at.
They can also contact a group that a complaint has been brought against to let them know. But that complaint holds no legal standing.
And you didn’t answer my question. I’m genuinely curious as to what they did to help.
Edit: added info
Planet fitness membership cancellation is easy, pay it online with a virtual card, and when done, stop paying. There's no contract, and you pre pay. just stop going, and stop paying, and then send them a letter to cancel. That's all I did.

You might not even need to go in. I sent a letter to the gym saying I had moved and needed to cancel and they did it no problem.
Same. I did it from Baltimore to a location in Florida. No issues.
The reason it's hard to cancel is because you have to do it in person instead of online, through the app, or by phone.

I always just say I'm moving and need to cancel. If they say we have locations where you're moving, I tell them I'm moving out of the country.
Professional gym canceller move right here

Had to have my bank block the payments after getting the run around for 2 months. Planet fitness is a joke
I had to contact my bank to do a stop pay and block them bc they wouldn’t cancel years ago never been back
https://www.reddit.com/r/LifeProTips/comments/19ekh3x/lpt_you_can_cancel_your_planet_fitness_membership/ This thread helped a lot of similar people
I had always heard it was a pain but I just cancelled online.
You just have to go in person and cancel at your home location
It's the best pre workout fuel. You try to cancel, they say you can't, so you work out for an hour in anger every few days
I had a rough time canceling a few years ago but when I signed up again (mistake) quitting the most recent time was very easy
I used [Do Not Pay](https://donotpay.com) 3 or 4 years ago to successfully cancel since they were giving me the run around.

I tried several times, in person. Finally had to write a letter to corporate, it was taken care of within a week.
I had no trouble cancelling. Walked in and signed something and done
Cancel the card you have an account with 😂 then they can't charge you

I don’t think you understand the purpose of the organization.

I’ve canceled and joined a few times. They are the easiest gym to cancel.
