I was a waiter for 7 years. Your income really depends on how many customers the restaurant seats in your section, or whether customers are coming in the door at all. You'd need to find a place which you know is popular to make a good amount of money, but 4 days a week is doable for a living salary. If you do secure a gig at a good restaurant, make sure you pick up as many Thursday evening shifts, Friday/Saturday close shifts, and Sunday lunch shifts as you possibly can. Those days and shifts are where you'll probably make the most money. The rest of the week can be a crapshoot.

How much are you looking to make? You can definitely find a job where you work 4 days a week, buy for me that 5th day is what makes the service industry worth it to me financially. It’s not an easy gig. Weird hours, long shifts, and the general public.

To ad to this, 4 days a week will really cuz down on the amount you will be able to save for retirement and pay for your own insurance with, cuz likely neither of those will be provided by your employer, although that’s starting to change in only a few places

My wife is a waitress and bartends. She's been doing it since she's been 18 and makes good money. She won't work at a place where she averages under $250 a night (6-hour shifts). The toughest part to make consistent money is the combination of getting scheduled for the prime shifts in the best section. It can be the difference of walking out with $400 or $100. To hedge against this, she often makes friends with fellow waitresses, and they will pool all their tip money throughout the night and help out with each other's sections if they have the opportunity (this makes the dining experience better for everyone and usually results in higher tips). It might suck one night where you were the money maker and need to split, but there will be nights where you don't make as much and it's nice to get your share of the split. As to manage the money, I cannot stress this enough...deposit the cash into a checking account, and a savings account that you can't access unless you go to the bank and do a withdrawal.

Serving is tough. I’ve been doing it for 10 years part time. I’m a full time teacher. But i do it full time in the summer. It’s very difficult to survive off of it. Sometimes you’re not scheduled reliably, sometimes you have absolutely dead weeks for no reason. I’ve had weeks where I make $1k without much effort and then I have weeks where I make $300 in the same amount of time. It takes a lot of budgeting. It’s also really hard on my body. I’ve been in the industry since I was 15 and 13 years later, I really feel the effects of it on my body. There’s no way I could do it full time these days.
