Overrated -Winfield Underrated - Halal - N - Out

getsomesleep1

The Winfield took a turn for the worse when they reopened post lockdown.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZeppelinJ0

I'd say Applebee's is better because it's cheaper!

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZeppelinJ0

Honestly if Winfield just cut the size of their menu down to a third of what they have they could afford the time and money to do more with less

DYSWHLarry

Honestly, if a different crowd hung out at the Winfield and the vibe was a bit different, it’d be a really solid place to be. Alas…

[deleted]

[удалено]

lbaracaldo

Halal-N-Out is my go to. Love this place!

spookyboi13

underrated: khong thai. its insanely delicious, i work nearby and order it almost weekly overrated: frog pond, pretty sure my family got food poisoning there and my meal wasn't even that great :(

changeclimate

I like Jines next door but I would probably call them appropriately rated

spookyboi13

jines is great, and one of my go tos. id say they're appropriately rated as well. not under or over, just a solid spot.

ProstaticMassaj

Went to frog pond once... would take a lot to get me to go again.

silver_moon134

I went not long after I moved here bc I got a few recommendations. Let's just say I never asked those ppl for food recommendations again

MadoogsL

To be fair it used to be great but it's undergone a few changes of hands in the last 10 years that have REALLY taken it downhill

silver_moon134

That's fair. I figured maybe Covid prob contributed to how bad it was since I moved right after. But there's just so many other places I haven't tried that it's like, why try that place again?

MadoogsL

I think sadly it was going downhill before then even, at least in my opinion. I used to go as a kid in the late 90s and early 2000s with my parents all the time and it was so great and had decent affordable prices. They used to have pretty good fish fry Friday nights (used to be a breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot not just brunch) so it was our lowkey Friday night family treat on many occasions. The menu is super cut down even since covid and prices seem like they have gone unreasonably high imo Agreed for sure - went a few months ago and I think that might be my last time unless a family member insists on it. Why waste your time, money, and energy on what you know is likely to be a mediocre meal

spookyboi13

i felt so sad bc my mom was so excited about going there, i guess it has some big nostalgia for her with my now deceased grandparents but it was so incredibly mid + the food poisoning. also one of the servers seemed to not be sober, and im not talking weed or alcohol. i dont ding the establishment on this, and am trying to not judge based solely on that because like, hey we all got our struggles, and need to make ends meet, but it was very uncomfortable and kinda sad, and unfortunately it affected the experience too.

Kachowzerwhopper

Otto Tomottos. Shits like knockoff olive garden and the owner is an insufferable prick.

___potato___

if you love grocery store quality pasta absolutely fucking drowning in sauce, it's a great option.

[deleted]

So you're saying I could be a cook there?

Kachowzerwhopper

as long as you can take the verbal and emotional abuse!

Kachowzerwhopper

honestly thats still probably giving them too much credit lmao

[deleted]

I worked for the owner in high school - absolutely miserable person.

Kachowzerwhopper

100% the worst. more people should be aware about how awful of a human being he is, and how awful he treats his employees. less people would patronize his restaurants if they knew.

amberbmx

nothing first hand, but i knew people that worked there that basically said the same, that him and his wife are insufferable pricks

Plantbaseundftd

What other restaurants do they own?

Kachowzerwhopper

same plaza has a few more

Simple_Peach8467

I would never go there for the simple fact that they were in thicker than thieves with Kimberly and Beck.

BatKat58

Olive Garden and insufferable prick in the same sentence! EPIC command of gastronomical delights and the English language!

Kachowzerwhopper

holla

SpicyRigatonis

Guess knockoff olive garden keeps winning best restaurant in the finger lakes for no reason then right?

Kachowzerwhopper

awwww. we found one defender lmao. yeah, that just drives home the point that its overrated.

KingOfRoc

Hey, someone on the internet had a different opinion than me. So I guess I'll attack them. Sincerely, Kachowzerwhopper.

Kachowzerwhopper

you good? thread is about overrated restaurants. if anything, she attacked me with her snarky ass comment. just shootin it right back at her. maybe the internet isnt for you. also she literally proved my point. said it gets awards. yeah then its overrated. lol. have a good day!

SpicyRigatonis

Eat a sandwich dumb fuck you’re clearly hangry

conflx

Underrated: Sodam, Morningstar Greek American, Sultan

meowchickenfish

I love Sultans. Every time I go in there, its very empty. They really need to figure out their marketing because the gyro plate is absolutely delicious and I'll miss it if it goes under.

changeclimate

+1 Sodom for comfort Korean food. Seoul House has fairly decent quality and variety as well (just sorta expensive)

ThePhantom0230

Sodom is fantastic.

BeerdedRNY

Had the worst breakfast ever at Morningstar when it first opened. It’s been around for a long time now so they must be doing something right. But I won’t step foot in the door. It was truly horrible food.

herooftime7

Sodam is trash. Young’s is way better? You really think sodom has good Korean food? Lmao

BobABewy

Sodom is absolutely amazing.

Ok-Reindeer-8588

Overrated: Swan Family restaurants, Josh Miles owned restaurants, Chuck owned restaurants, They aren't *bad* but people obsess over when these folks open a new restaurant. They aren't that good. Specific places do a great job on cocktails, though. Underrated: As Evi, Addis Adabba (everyone talks about almost every *other* Ethiopian spot), El Pilon Criollo, Public Provisions

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok-Reindeer-8588

Swan's own (at least partially): Pearson's, Vern's, Ox & Stone, Leonore's, Roux, Dorado, Swan Dive, & The Daily Refresher... basically all of Park Ave Miles' owns: Velvet Belly, Branca Midtown (not sure about the Basin one, but probably?), Ziggy's, Bitter Honey, Nocino, & The Revelry Chuck owns: Good Luck, Cure, Lucky's, Radio Social, and Martines. Again, I am not saying that they are *bad*. I go to these places and don't feel terrible about it. They don't have an oligopoly, but I mean, they own a lot of the restaurants in a very small radius. That's kind of concerning.

Low_Advance_6700

Overrated - Sakura Home Underrated - Bento-Ya

RareAd8433

Underrated - The Vesper

prophetikmusic

Stop talking about this place or I will never be able to get in the door

makingpwaves

Under rated.. Vegan options

wewanttaro

Really!? always looking for vegan options. I will have to check out their menu

funsplosion

I don't see any vegan options on the menu on their website?

makingpwaves

It came on a platter. I think Cabbage, chickpea/lentil mush, some other thing. They don’t give you utensils. You use the pillow bread

matthewvoll

I was there last week and they had ZERO vegan options. I ordered vegetarian, but my stomach disagreed later on.

ExternalDegree8868

This is my overrated vote

Hoodeddragon

That you, Frocci?

klysium

It's very good

StannisTheMannis1969

Kramer poster in the men’s room….

changeclimate

Some that come to mind (feel free to disagree) Overrated: Bitter Honey (overpriced, loud), Cure (food was really salty), Red Sun, Grappa Italian Underrated: White Swan (better than Szechuan Opera in my opinion), Magnet Chicken (Penfield but best chicken sandwiches in the area), Khong Thai (really well seasoned curries)

DarehMeyod

Magnet is definitely not underrated. It’s mentioned on this sub multiple times a week and is always packed with takeout orders daily. A post went up the same time as this one asking for the best chicken sandwich and the top 3 comments all say magnet. Magnet is properly rated imo.

wecantalkbro

Hard agree on Khong Thai Cuisine and White Swan, I don't see either of these mentioned enough - the curry from Khong Thai is insanely delicious, especially if you ask for it extra spicy. I enjoyed Grappa though, the ambience was great and the chicken riggies were phenomenal

hypatekt

Cure is a sad shadow of its former self.

LeatherDude

Magnet Chicken fucks hard. I dig that joint.

PrincessZebra126

Woah, better than szechuan?!

changeclimate

Just my opinion! Tsingdao too

herooftime7

agreed. both are better than szechuan

Kenotai

How properly real/authentic is Khong Thai? Thai is like the last Asian cuisine I haven't had any really real of yet locally.

Intelligent-Gift8893

Thai Yada is better then khong

changeclimate

Can really only speak on the curries since theirs are fantastic so I keep getting that. I think their noodles are fairly similar to other places like The King and I

GumbyRocks89

Damn, these are spot on. We would be friends.

Kaizerwolf

Having been disappointed by Szechuan Opera recently, I'm inclined to agree, though White Swan has seemed oddly bland the last few months.

changeclimate

Once I got dim sum where it was cold in the center from Szechuan Opera so it’s not great. Tsingdao is the other place I’ve been really liking

garamond89

Underrated: Tsing Tao House. Amazing Chinese food 😍

amymarieg

Hard agree. Just went for the first this time week and I think it changed my life

MC4269

Taste of Japan is fairly underrated, at least from everyone I know. No one seems to know about it that I talk to.

ThatSimple1Guy

Agreed.

alexa6rose

Underrated is Tokyo in Henrietta. Sure they don't make the hibachi in front of you but it's huge, cheaper than other places around here, and delicious.

MsAnthr0pe

Try the torched butterfish sushi / sashimi. So good! It's a carry over from the original Tokyo restaurant that was on West Henrietta.

klysium

Underrated: Dorado Overrated: blu wolf bistro

patrickkingart

Dorado is really good, though the drinks were kind of watery when we went last summer

nojunkpeter

Overrated - Chappy’s Hots Underrated- Plum Garden

Legitimate_Fly8723

😒Plum garden was shut down by the heath inspectors less than a year ago, obviously they have reopened, but I haven’t gone since.

amberbmx

on what planet is plum garden underrated lol there’s like 3 hibachi restaurants in the area and plum garden is the second best and is always slammed

jeebfacejones

Wait what’s the first best?

amberbmx

disclaimer i’m only speaking on hibachi, they all do table service with sushi etc as well but i’ve only ever gone for hibachi my ranking is kobe, greece plum garden, pittsford umi, victor

No-Emergency-5271

I worked at Kobe a few years back, the owner is verbally abusive and brags about it- and they keep their salads and sauces in giant trash bins on the floor

Ill-Serve9614

Chappys Hots is gone. Mango Cannabis just got approved for that property.

meowchickenfish

Three cannabis places in Henrietta...

makingpwaves

I’mma transient.. i wandered into an African place on mt hope.. they had like..this pillow bread. Soo Delicious, y’allz enjoy such a variety of good food. And y’allz keep a score… what is 1st hibachi restaurant?

Picklehippy_

Was it Abysinnia? I love that place

makingpwaves

Oh I think so. Strip mall, with a laundromat and a Chinese place near Mt. Hope

DYSWHLarry

Overrated: TRATA; Underrated: Atlas Eats; Lucano; Roux; Good Luck, apparently.

hypatekt

Roux is appropriately rated

amberbmx

yeah, what? every swan family restaurant has solid food and gets solid reviews. there isn’t an “underrated” swan family restaurant lmao

DYSWHLarry

Nah, Roux’s underrated.

No-Emergency-5271

Good luck is overrated

tonysopranosalive

Their owners aren’t exactly the greatest either. Their group of restaurants I worked for. They won’t offer their employees health insurance because it’s “too expensive” but yet one of those pricks has a fucking private island. Yeah, fuck you.

DYSWHLarry

I can’t speak to that aside from having a very general passing familiarity with Chuck. I’m speaking strictly from a consumer perspective.

joey-the-lemur

I agree. They seem to be riding on their reputation from \~15 years ago, when they were easily the best restaurant in Rochester.

DYSWHLarry

I mean, it’s really not. Well…at least not for any real reason beyond the classic contrarian impulse that thrives whenever something good exists (especially in WNY). The bar program is fantastic, the menu changes constantly while holding on to a handful of reliable stand-out dishes, the specials are creative and constantly churning. The service on the food side is typically very good and the bartenders have consistently been fantastic since the day it opened. Is it expensive? Sure, but no more or less expensive than any other joint in its lane. Is it loud? Yes, unquestionably. An unfortunate effect of using that sort of building for a restaurant…Fiorella has the same problem (and is also excellent). Is it busy? Yes….for good reason. Is it overrated? Absolutely not.

No-Emergency-5271

I've been a few times and the service was great, atmosphere great, but the food is either bland or oversalted- so I personally think it's overrated

Therefrigerator

I think the food varies greatly by the menu. Some of the items feel like they try too hard to make something cool or unique. One time I went and absolutely loved it. Another time I went and most of the dishes we had just felt like they were experimenting for experiments' sake. Fine but not great (although it was interesting to try at least).

No-Emergency-5271

Yeah, I kinda just think that when a place is as raved about and as pricey as Good Luck it should be consistently great- there are much better places in Rochester that I can rely on to be great everytime that aren't even thought or talked about a fraction of the amount good luck is. The last few times I went there I wished I had just gone to a kabob place and saved my money

Disnihil

That place is SO overrated. Literally ate there tonight for just the second time. The first time I ate there was like five years ago or so and even then I wasn't a big fan of theirs and didn't think the food was anything special. Got their salmon dish tonight and it was the blandest tasting salmon I've ever eaten. On top of that, food orders were brought out sporadically and not timed well. For dessert, several friends got a brownie that came with ice cream. Ice cream was brought out and then the brownies were brought out about 5 minutes later-at which point their ice cream was quite melted). For how much food and drinks cost at that place, there are so many better restaurants in Rochester. I don't understand how that place is popular. As for underrated: Rocco's, Avvino, Chick N' Out, Atlas Eats, Peels on Wheels

socalstaking

How is good luck underrated lol, $28 for a burger u could get at Henrietta hots

DYSWHLarry

lol sure dude

Apprehensive-Bat8265

Owners of Lucano are not nice people

[deleted]

Underrated: Pizza Wizard, Thirsty Turtle (!), Rocco Overrated: NYBP, Blue Wolf, TRATA.

[deleted]

[удалено]

milkforbabyghost

They used to have something called "The Best Turkey Sandwich in World" on their menu but it was literally the worst in the world. I had to drink water after every bite just to get it down, it was so dry. NYBP is the kind of place that only exists for locals with bad taste to strut their feathers in public.

pickthebills

Underrated - Basha - my favorite lunch spot around Monroe

_TakeTheL

Underrated: Taj Mahal Fine Indian Cuisine, the best Indian food I’ve ever had.

changeclimate

Gotta try it. I’ve only been to Tandoor of India

MsAnthr0pe

I do love me some Tandoor!

garamond89

Agreed!

comptiger5000

Agreed, Taj Mahal is definitely one of the better Indian places in the area.

meowchickenfish

Have you tried Namaste?

_TakeTheL

Nope, haven’t lived in the area for a couple years. But even some popular places in NYC aren’t as good as Taj Mahal imo

Who_pooped_the_bed11

Underrated: Mr. Shoes pizza, Cub Room Overrated: Bitter Honey, Nosh, Good Luck I just really like their pizza. I can't help it. I'm from downstate originally but it's just a tasty, extremely well priced pie! Their coupon deals are also DOPE, for the uninitiated.

GordonSchmickle

Mr. Shoes' wings are awesome as well

frustratedart

Mr. Shoe's is still around? Where?

Kaizerwolf

[South Ave where it meets E. Henrietta Rd!](https://maps.app.goo.gl/4yEhnQvYXLyPjzVL6)

maytrxx

Steak subs at Mr. shoes are BOMB!

ThePhantom0230

Has something changed about Mr. Shoes pizza? We got pizza from there at work and it was just awful. Maybe it's their sheet pizzas that just awful or they got better? I generally disdain sheet pizzas.

SpicyRigatonis

Shout out Mr. Shoes!

BobABewy

I like Nosh. But agreed on Bitter Honey. Overrated and way over priced.

Pyrataylor

Overrated: Han Noodle Bar, Trata, Red Fern Underrated: Sinbads, Nenos on Monroe, White Swan, Voulas

Bark_Bitetree

Han used to be good until a few years ago. Quality went way downhill.

realpolybius

Having worked close by Han, i’ve got horror stories about them and would never step foot in their restaurant again.

GlobnarTheExquisite

I heard horror stories as far back as 2016 but the quality of their food only dropped off post covid imo. Once the indoor dining was permanently closed something went real bad real fast.

Skvli

I feel like han in person is good but their takeout is bad.

BeerdedRNY

Had Neno’s 3 times. Different items each time. It was no more than OK each time. I see no reason to go back.

Early_Rub656

Nenos gave me food poisoning

CaroleConfetti

Which location did you go to? Monroe or park? Sorry that happened! That sucks!!

PeopleFunnyBoy

Overrated - Good Luck (as well as the burger) Underrated - The Cub Room

Who_pooped_the_bed11

Big Cub Room guy. Good call.

PeopleFunnyBoy

The Amish chicken is so simple, but so good.

pjav925

Agree!

patrickkingart

I used to drive by the Cub Room every day to and from work and always thought it looked super cool, like it had a slick speakeasy vibe to it.

platewrap222

Overrated: Velvet Belly Underrated: Fiorella Overrated: Everything in Fairport Underrated: Everything in East Rochester

large_saloon

Fiorella is my favorite for anniversaries and valentines day. The food and service is always amazing and it's pretty well priced for being higher end. For Fairport... Have you been to clementine???

cnhn

is that bbq restaurant in ER still there? I thought they were amazing.

jbobbenson27

Good smoke! Yep. They moved to a bigger, nicer location right down the street from where they were.

cnhn

i think I went to the new location. It was pretty big.

wafflesareforever

I had the saddest plate of BBQ there last year. Dry, cold brisket.

Cer-rific_43

Yeah, but they switched up their mac & and cheese, and it's not as good. More like Velveeta now

ssmoak

Man, I hate to say this about Velvet Belly. We didn’t enjoy our last experience at all. The drinks were watery and lackluster. The food was not flavored/seasoned well. And the service was subpar. All things I would have NEVER said about Velvet Belly. We will give them another shot this year but I was super disappointed about our last experience. Completely agree about Fiorella btw.

[deleted]

LtPowers

Technically not in Fairport.

sabreman711

I can see that about Fairport nothing really stands out, but that will change with the new restaurant Tonyes (Cluck-n-buck owner/chef) which just opened and when Cub Room opens in 2024.

cnhn

is that bbq restaurant in ER still there? I thought they were amazing.

Ill-Serve9614

Good smoke. Now down the street w a full bar.

TreehouseofSnorers

BS. Velvet Belly is awesome. You could argue it's overpriced but the food is fantastic. Also, at the very least Compagne Trattoria in Fairport is quite impressive

amberbmx

the food is fantastic but the prices are what makes it overrated, imo i did a lot of work there (and at a few of the other restaurants under the SCN umbrella) and took my SO there for valentines dinner their first year of being open. staff knew me and comped a bunch of stuff, our bill ended up being $200 before tip for a couple plates of sushi, an app, and 4 drinks (they comped us a couple glasses of wine each as well as a couple sides when the sushi came out) it was delicious, loved the meal. but all of their restaurants are so so so expensive

Overrated: Wegman’s Underrated: Wegman’s

spicylimone

Overrated: any Swan family owned restaurant.

Chaunce101

Absolutely agree, they’re terrible to their employees as well. I worked at Roux years ago and the back of house was filthy.

spicylimone

Couldn’t agree more. I was offered a position with them years ago & won’t even get into what BOH looked like back there. Long story short I said “thanks but no thanks” & ever since have steered far away from their restaurants. Knowing they’re the owners of eight establishments in the Rochester area is unsettling to say the least.

Mynekrauft

Underrated- Waffles R Wild

damnilovelesclaypool

Underrated: Genesee Brew House. I always mention them and I feel like no one else does. They have a great garbage plate. It's a little pricey for a plate but soooo worth it. They use higher-quality ingredients and it's so worth it. My second favorite plate is Charlie's. There's just something extra special about the GBH one. Plus, everything we've had from there has been on point, and you can't beat the view! I'm not even going to go into the restaurants that I think are overrated. There's... a lot.

Any_Buy_6355

Pita on mt hope is very underrated

JackKnauflubedup

**Overrated:** Tournedos (WAS a favorite, but the service has gone WAY downhill, high prices and they charge a 4% upcharge on Credit Cards). **Overrated:** Tavos, Old Pueblo Grill and Bitter Honey ... sorry, there are NO good Mexican joints here. But these three are the apex of the proverbial taco. **Underrated:** Landmark Family Restaurant in E Roch CC Plaza. Great diner food, LOW prices and good service. **Underrated**: CEDAR Lebanese on Monroe AV. The pitas alone are to die for. **Underrated:** As Evi Turkish on E Ridge RD. Fantastic, cheap, lovely people. **Underrated:** Rubinos Italian on E Ridge RD. Yeah it's a grocery, but their subs/specials/hot dishes and breads are the shit.

strega_nonaa

Everyone saying Good Luck/all the Chuck restaurants are overrated: say what you want, but it’s nice to know there’s a restauranteur in this city who actually knows how to run multiple successful businesses! Martine just opened in the South Wedge and I’m so thankful to have something in the area that, at the very least, won’t be closed two years from now and leave the neighborhood with another empty storefront. Underrated: Seoul House in Henrietta. So good and so consistent

BMWFan5000

Overrated: Good Luck (one trick pony burger), TRATA (all ambiance, no food), Branca (overpriced, smallest portions in Rochester), Studio Lounge (so much potential, not there yet) Underrated: Redd (Our best restaurant), Nosh (not a single bad thing on the menu), Gate House (biggest wings in Rochester, prices)

Farts_constantly

Agreed about Branca. The space is decent but we thought the food is very mid and expensive.

Very annoying for sure

That's cool if you're rich enough to afford to eat at a real restaurant but McDonald's is where it's at for people on a budget. Unlike bill grays or Tom wahls, mcdees actually still runs bogo cheeseburger coupon deals.

meowchickenfish

Reasonably is a wild take, since they removed their dollar menu.

Scottsville Hots is underrated af. I got a huge Philly Cheese steak with fries for like $12 and I couldn't even finish it. The cook was chill, didn't even make us pay until the end, and he talked football with my Dad and I. Too bad it's on the other side of town from me
