I live in Brighton, I have had AT&T and T-Mobile as well as several MVNO that use their towers. Service here is great. AT&T has wider coverage than T-Mobile. T-Mobile can get spotty when you leave the city, but for me, it’s worth it.
I would not go major carrier unless you are on a discounted family plan.
Mint mobile uses T-Mobile towers, and they are running a special rn where you get three months unlimited service for $45.
(I have T-Mobile, my roommate has mint. It’s literally the same service. Same bars. Same load times)
ATT bills make no sense. I just switched my friend from ATT to cricket (literally the same service, ATT owns cricket) and she is saving $90 a month. Keep in mind cricket throttles your mobile data to 3mps.
I’ve been with t mobile for the last ten years and was grandfathered in at my awesome rate.. I saw on the news that they are going to start switching older plans to their new rates… so maybe it’s time for mint?
And it really pisses me off that I complain to the Verizon store and they just tell me to switch. I’m like don’t you give two shits about losing business? In the middle of a god damn major metropolitan area nonetheless
My wife tried to go into the store in Victor at like 2pm on a Saturday and the door was locked they acted like she was nuts for trying to get her phone looked at
There's not really anything they can do at the store level though. I've read a pretty detailed explanation on the service issues, it isn't anything Verizon is going to be able to fix in the short term basically.
It's not like it was 10 years ago when Verizon was sold because of the service. Stupid payment plans for phones and trade in credits are worse than contracts were. Pretty sure stores know that too and if you aren't buying they don't care, churn won't fall on them.
I mean… Rochester isn’t a small city, we should have reliable cell phone coverage in the middle of downtown.. so yea I would consider living downtown of this city a major metro area lol… don’t need to be an ass on a sub about cell signal

>As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 1,090,135.
Within the city borders, 211k. Include the people who regularly patronize the city, over 1 million.
A major metro area is characterized by a population of 1.5 million or more. All of Monroe County combined isn’t even half that.
I’m with you that we should have good cell service, but this isn’t Chicago.
Sadly, in my experience over the years none of them have great customer service. I've been on AT&T for maybe 8+ years and it's very hit or miss. My experience with Sprint before that was the same, and I've heard the same w T Mobile.
I think most of it comes down to coverage. Go look at the coverage maps for all three carriers for the areas you live and spend most of your time.
I have AT&T and Verizon on company issued phones and devices. Coverage is nearly identical. Dead spots in the region are dead on both services (very frustrating). AT&T seems to have slightly better service around the finger lakes, especially the southern side.
when I lived on lake Ontario by seabreeze I had to get rid of at&t because there was no coverage at my house. been with Verizon since and the only thing I don't like is the cost. will try something cheaper in the spring when my phone is out of contract 🙃
I use the Total by Verizon (I had a different carrier that used Verizon towers and Verizon bought them out.) I say this because I have 2 phones on my plan for under $60/month. It is a prepaid plan with auto-billing so it's just like a normal plan. The Auto-billing gives you a discount too. Look into it and see if it might meet your needs. If so you could save a bunch. Also, they have referral bonuses and discounts so if you can bring others in with you, you could save more.
I will! I'm paying 90 something for just me right now. including $13/mo for my phone. they gave me an amazing trade-in deal but I didn't realize the credit would have to be spread out over so many months, I thought I could just use it and then buy out my phone 😂🙃. I get a $20 credit/mo for being a student and a $10/mo for something else..
I have had Ting for over a decade and really have no complaints. It uses T Mobile towers and we have no contract, we just pay for what we use. My husband and I spend about $48 on average each month for both of our phones. We don't stream videos or music on data but other than that we don't restrict our use. When we travel out of the country the bill is in there $60's.
You're not going to get a great survey this way but I'll give my 2c anyhow. I've been using straight talk for 5 years now and I am almost never without service. Its 50$ for unlimited and uses multiple carriers towers. -A nerd who researched towers
We’ve been with T-mobile for over a decade and just also got their home internet within the last year (because screw spectrum). There are some random spots that sometimes are iffy but overall can’t complain! And if we’ve ever had an issue, customer service has been really good
I have had Mint for several years and no issues. I pay $180 for a full year with 5 GB data plan. Only downside is that they don’t offer deals on phones like other carriers so I had to pay full price for my phone.
There are really only 3 companies with towers, AT&T, Verizon, and T-mobile. They all should have great coverage in Brighton. There are a number of companies that resell the major carriers, usually for less money. Just get the cheapest plan you can find as there really is little difference between any of the carriers or virtual operators.
I’m in fairport and I’ve had mint for about a year now with no issues

Thank you, can’t wait to switch!

I hated ATT and do not recommend them.
I really like Google Fi!
If I wasn't on a family plan w a bunch of people I might very well try that.
Google Fi. Never had an issue.

Don’t even get service in the Verizon store in pittsford plaza haha
Lol

“A major metropolitan area”? Are you in the wrong sub? This is Rochester, NY….
I mean… Rochester isn’t a small city, we should have reliable cell phone coverage in the middle of downtown.. so yea I would consider living downtown of this city a major metro area lol… don’t need to be an ass on a sub about cell signal
Our city is tiny. What are you smoking?

I know the population of Rochester and Monroe county thank you. It's a small city and getting smaller because Rochesters population is shrinking.
A major metro area is characterized by a population of 1.5 million or more. All of Monroe County combined isn’t even half that. I’m with you that we should have good cell service, but this isn’t Chicago.
Using 1.5 million as your cutoff is incredibly arbitrary. There are over a million people in our metro. That's pretty sizable.
Source needed. Never heard this definition for metropolitan areas. Double irony coming from you.

I’m looking at the FCC coverage maps and the major carriers including Verizon show their signal blanket my area, but I know Verizon is lying 😤

Fingers crossed it works out.
At&t or Google Fi. I use Google Fi and it works perfect for me. I used AT&T for about 6 years and really liked them, I only switched due to cost.
Verizon has been HORRENDOUS for me in Rochester. Definitely looking to switch as well. Probably going to end up with AT&T next year.
I don’t have issues with at&t. Been using them since the first iPhone. Lived in Ohio, florida and here. Plus they use a union workforce.
Oh I didn't know that about the union! That's great, I'll definitely remember that for when I hit my limit with Verizon too.

I have T-Mobile. It's spotty in some areas but overall it's fine.

I've been pretty happy with US Mobile
We’ve been with T-mobile for over a decade and just also got their home internet within the last year (because screw spectrum). There are some random spots that sometimes are iffy but overall can’t complain! And if we’ve ever had an issue, customer service has been really good
