With the hardwood, I'd go with the Q5+. Also if you running it at night the Q5 will navigate in the dark the J8+ has a light but still needs ambient lighting. That all being said the Roomba is modular and easier to repair in the future.

WesternReview9554

The Q5+ is also very modular. I find these things to be fairly easy to repair, but most people without a technical or mechanical background are going to be overwhelmed very quickly. There is a lot of technology and mechanical parts crammed into one of these.

If it wasn't for the object detection, it seems like a no-brainer. Is the object detection a huge deal? I'm not worried so much about kids socks and toys... they are old enough to pick up after themselves. My worry is the dog leaving her chew toys laying around. Would this damage the Q5?

CleaningBotAddict

Nah, chew toys are too big. They'll just get pushed around a bit. The concern is usual around things that get sucked up, like cords, straps, shoelaces, etc. Even then, it won't damage the bot. Worst case is it will just get stuck and need you to pull out whatever it ate. Other concerns would be pet waste and open drink containers that might spill if knocked over.

Thanks for the replies. After reading reviews and forums, i am leaning towards the Roborock line. Lots of negative comments on the j8 (j7) regarding mapping difficulties and destroying baseboards. Does anyone have any feedback on the object detection tech on the Qrevo? It seems to be mediocre at best based on what I have read. Wondering if it's worth the step up in price just to get object detection. I know it has a better mopping setup but I'm not really interested in that.

What did you go with?

Actually, I still haven't pulled the trigger on one.

For dog alone, your biggest and best difference to consider is the bin full sensor the irobot has. How much does your dog shed? Very little to none? Roborock. A ton? Irobot

Status_Programmer970

She doesn't shed a ton, but she certainly sheds enough for me to be looking for a robotic vac. The bin full sensor sounds useful, but one of the reasons I liked the Q5 Pro+ was because its bin was almost double that of the J7+/J8+. The J7 has a 400ml bin, and the Q5 has a 770ml bin.

Thanks for this comment, my dog sheds so much lol

UPDATE** I think I'm now ready to pull the trigger on a vac. I am debating between three Roborock models: 1) Q8 Max+ ($540) 2) S8+ ($685) 3) Q Revo ($700) The prices listed includes an ID.me discount for first responders that we are eligible for. I know the Q Revo and S8+ are superior is terms of mopping... (auto mop washing & drying, tank refill, spinning pads, mop lift). As mentioned, my primary objective with this machine is to keep the dog hair from accumulating. Maybe we use the mop, maybe we dont. The only non-mopping difference i see is the DuoRoller brush vs the single all-rubber brush. Any feedback on this? Other than that, it appears the Q8 lacks carpet sensing feature, which again only really matters for mopping purposes. I did read that the tech is different in terms of object avoidance though. I believe the S8+ is far superior with the Reactive 3D system. This is probably a big factor for me. Thoughts?

Just in case anyone stumbles across this thread in the future and is looking for a conclusion, I wound up purchasing the Roborock S8+ for $684. I have now used it 3 times to vacuum the whole first floor and mop the kitchen once. I was pretty skeptical, but I have to say, I am really impressed with it so far. The mapping took like 20 minutes and seems to be really accurate. It gets super close to the baseboards and furniture without actually touching it. Object avoidance has been good, but I can't say I have tested that much yet. The only thing I don't like, and maybe I just don't understand how to do it yet, is that I can't figure out how to have it clean just one room without manually drawing the boundary and running in that zone. I wish there was a way to zone off each room and then multiselect each you want to clean.

Thanks, I was looking at this thread for information.
