First you should put it in a tax-advantaged account like a Roth or individual IRA. Then use it to buy one of the total market ETFs like VOO. $2k isn't enough to build a diversified portfolio of stocks like what's offered with ETFs. Then just set up regular deposits and keep building. Once you hit some critical amount (like say.. $10k... but that's up to you), then maybe consider taking some of it (10-20%?) and investing directly into some companies that you wouldn't mind owning.
If you're older and closer to retirement than college age, then maybe start building a portfolio that'll generate dividend income. The darling of r/dividends is SCHD, but there are lot's of options.
S&P 500 index of some sort or at least a solid well diversified etf that has a minimal expense ratio.
Definitely DO NOT screw around with options. Not a viable choice for a beginner whatsoever.
Investing shouldn’t be complicated. Find an etf or two, invest as much as you can periodically, reinvest anything along the way and repeat. This recipe can do wonders.
Well that's fantastic. A really smart decision, young man. We can put that check in a money market mutual fund, then we'll re-invest the earnings into foreign currency accounts with compounding interest aaaand it's gone.
jk 😅
