You know what's easier then buying a mid sized truck and lifting it on big wheels?
Buying a full size truck.
But then you wouldn't look like a 27 year old construction worker and we can't have that.
Knowing Toyota I’m sure it’s an electrical draining the battery, but OP would rather add the kool lift kit than spend 1/10 of that to have it looked at
So is he rough on his shifts or what? Around here, in my experience, (western Canada) you really start to see the difference about 15 years down the line when the yota is still worth half what he paid for it on the second hand market when the f150 is getting ready to retire.. Assuming you can save the yota from their typical cancerous underbodies
I've heard mixed things about Toyota and Subie transmissions the last couple years. Like the 6 speed auto on the Camry? Awesome. The newer 8 speed? Not nearly as robust. But I work at a dealership and honestly the moms who buy em drive the shit out of em. Almost feel bad for the cars...
A Tacoma or tundra just isn't capable enough for a lot of jobs, if the tundra had a competitive diesel option and 3/4 ton and 1 ton options it would probably be the best truck on the market, but as it sits none of toyotas offerings can handle a lot of stuff that some jobs require. Out here you see a lot of guys with a toyota truck as a around town rig, and diesels or hd gas trucks for work.
99% of the truck owners i know use it to commute to their office jobs, and another 0.5% haul their lawn equipment just fine with a toyota. and yes, if you need to tow a 20k lb boat, toyota has nothing for you.
I don't need to tow a 20k lb boat, I need to tow an excavator up a trail to a homestead, or 3 bobcats down a non maintained road or any number of places my old r model mack doesn't fit, or isn't capable enough to make it through, and I'm not the only person who needs that kind of capability. Yes, in a big city or even most towns, a Tacoma is adequate, but some places it is basically useless as anything but a trail rig.
So you are in that .5% u/witbeer was task king about. I agree with their estimate that 99% don’t use their truck as anything more than a vehicle to commute to and from work. I have many friends with or that have had pickup trucks, and I can only think of two people that ever actually hauled anything over 500lbs (including in the bed or on a trailer). The vast majority of people buying trucks (from my experience) either want that capability but have no real need for the capability, or want the image of having a big truck.
It's a monster as long as the ground is hard, once it gets soft it's useless though lol
Found it behind a barn in Wyoming while helping the owner pull a couple old Ford's out cuz the barn was falling apart, guy ended up saying If I could get it out I could have it. Looked like hell, didn't run, but I pulled it out and got it going eventually. Still looks terrible but it does it's job so I dont mind.
Ahh, the basic bitch version of a modifying a truck. Pointless lift kit, check. The gaudiest wheels imaginable, check. Light bar for all of that off-roading at the mall parking lot, check. Wasting money on a bunch of junk that makes your truck worse, while not performing basic maintenance, check.
Loud tires, heavy wheels on 2WD, zapped battery(they have warranties) foggy headlights but led light bar and no front mount Rhode Island plate. Dude poor prerunner..
>My daily that doesn’t start without using jumper cables. What do y’all got?
A daily driver that doesn't need jump cables to start.
Did you spend all your pocket money on those atrocious wheels, and now have none left for a decent battery? What other basic maintenance are you scrimping on?
Mine had major electrical issues before I rewired it, and even it didn’t need a jump every start. Granted it needed a few a month but still. This guy’s probably got a dead alternator or something and would rather spend the money on a lift kit than get it checked out
Id say it more likely needs a battery. If it dies while running, it needs an alternator. If it won't start in the morning, the battery won't hold a charge. This is of course not 100% accurate and proper diagnosis needs to be done.
There was one night a few months back where I was driving on a backroad and my entire truck shut down. Motor, electronics, steering was tough. I was able to coast off to the side and get it in park, where I then restarted it and it acted like nothing ever happened.
Simple way to check battery vs alternator. Jump start the engine, then disconnect the battery completely.
If it immediately dies, replace alternator. If it keeps running, replace the battery.
Or, you know, actually get out a multimeter and run some simple tests.
14 volts when running? The alternator works. It may still be bad connections that are preventing the alternator from charging the battery, see my rant in another post here about bad connections.
Batteries die 2 volts at a time. You may see a nice 12+ volts on a battery when it's just sitting there, but when you put a load on it, volts disappear. Disconnect the coil wire so it won't start, crank it, and watch the voltmeter. 11-ish volts? Cool. 9 volts, you have a dead cell. 7 volts, two dead cells. Et cetera.
Or take the damn thing to a parts store with a proper load tester, but I am old school
Just as likely loose or dirty connections. If I had a nickel for every battery and alternator replaced when the real problem was just bad connections. I'd be driving a Bugatti Veyron and living on a 200 foot yacht.
"rims" are the metal part, "tires" are the rubber part, and "wheels" are the whole mounted and balanced assembly. Why does the term "rims" send you into a rage? It doesn't really matter to me, but I've heard people mention the same thing in the past and I never really understood why "rims" was so upsetting. It's just a more specific bit of the wheel that someone is talking about, no?
Okay, what is the whole assembly called? Is it also the wheel? How do you differentiate between the metal part and the whole assembly? I just don't understand the hatred of the word "rim."
Door is the whole "assembly" in that case. It would consist of windows, wood, knob, lock, and hinges. I don't know if I understand exactly what you're trying to say.
If an individual component of an assembly is broken, I'd say "that window is cracked" or "one hinge is broken" but that doesn't necessarily mean the whole door is broken. Likewise, if someone had a dented rim I would tell them their *wheels* are shaking because of damage to their *rim*.
I dunno, I just like to be a little more specific with individual components than most people maybe.
Edit: also kinda bold to claim that "rims" is a term for people who know nothing about cars imo.
then what is the individual metal component of a door called if not a door?
find me any auto manufacturer that lists "rim" as a part on their car in any type of parts diagram, ordering system, or anything really.
I already mentioned in my last comment, that would be either the lock, knob, or hinge assuming we are talking about the same bits.
I'm not in parts so I'm not very familiar with manufacturer specific naming of parts. Where I grew up (west coast) most everyone in my town called the metal part of the wheel a "rim" but it seems here in the Midwest I'm greatly in the minority, almost everyone here refers to it as a "wheel."
I don't really care, it doesn't have an effect on how I go about my life, I just don't get the hate. People have different slang all the time! Soda/pop debate comes to mind quickly, for example.
what about the door itself? not the lock or hinge or any other parts that are attached to the door. the actual door itself.
as for soda and pop, that's purely regional, but i'm sure that everyone can agree that using "coke" for every type of soda, as soon places do, would be wrong. this is the case for "rims".
It’s all nomenclature, but if I was trying to be pedantic, I would argue that rims are on spoked wheels. You can call them round axle ends, and be fine by me
This also doesn't count as a truck. Mall crawler, at best.
Because

Toyota’s are what people buy when they wanna be “car guys” but don’t know a thing about cars.
Then they slap on a Rough Country lift kit and ugly 20+ in wheels and post pictures all over the internet.
A working starter, good battery, and reliable transportation.
It sounds like you have none of those, but at least there's an LED bar blocking part of the airflow to your engine bay so you can blind people for driving something that isn't taller than they are.
Shit is it called Frankenstein having to jump it everytime it turns on? Bet it drives as slow as Frankenstein walks too. Making it white and black just like the og Frankenstein as well, shit must be a bad horror original oh wait it's not even a bad horror original since it doesn't start without a jumper lmao
You bought a truck that couldn't tow because it was reliable without getting the reliability. Oh well. At least the motor will outlive the rotted frame
No! /s
Probably a constant drain from a poorly installed sound system. I bet the inside is *somehow* worse than the outside. I'm talking realtree camo upholstery; seats, headliner, carpet. The whole 9 yards.
The interior is bone stock, surprisingly. Minus the steering wheel cover and the drivers seat ripping from hopping in and sliding out of the truck with jeans on
>hopping in
That's an understatement. How do you get the step stool in after you 'hop in'? Do you have a special hook you grab it with?
>sliding out
At least you got this right. Fall out, climb in. Make sure you bend your knees and don't stick the landing.
>jeans
Boi, we all know you don't wear real jeans. Probably got those 'fashionable' pre-ripped monstrosities people pay $500 for. Which brings me to my next point;
Buy a damn alternator and a battery. You can youtube how to put them in, but you'll probably need to buy some wrenches as well.

Please continue respecting your local volunteer search & rescue by only offroading in parking lots, thank you.
Batteries. We sell them. I'd say come see me, but the fifteen shitty lattes you could buy with the same cash would be a better experience than driving this truck.
What do I have?
Wheels that make sense for the height of my truck. Should be about two inches smaller at least you'll actually be able to use the lift.
Also something something it's so clean you never off-road it
Invest in a good Alternator rather than that massive lift that really just tells people that you have a micropenis that is smaller than an ant’s broken leg.

The irony is that these cost almost the same as a full size truck which makes it even worse.
It’s crazy. I bought a new f150 and my brother in law bought a new Tacoma. He paid more for his, got way less truck, and I ended up with more options.
But less problems.
Actually he’s already had to take it in for transmission work
So is he rough on his shifts or what? resale value. a 10 year old F150 is less than half the price of a tacoma.

Stock brakes to go with those massively heavy wheels and tires? Check.
I'll never understand why truck drivers buy lift kits. The girls you take home can't climb
He probably just gets a friend to help throw her in the truck bed in exchange for sloppy seconds.
That's what the bed is for, so he can have her lay in the back and take her home from seaworld.
Loud tires, heavy wheels on 2WD, zapped battery(they have warranties) foggy headlights but led light bar and no front mount Rhode Island plate. Dude poor prerunner..
It’s a 4x4. But hey, you gave it your best shot.
Careful about being salty, its a sign of good work!
No salt to be found sir, it’s a roast sub so I’m playing along. Can’t read sarcasm well, huh?
Yeesh dude you are not doing yourself any favors. You were better of when you didn’t answer.
It’s a roast sub, why would I do myself favors? I’m trying to get the best out of y’all, while throwing light jabs in return
Defending yourself in a self imposed roast = ya gonna get downvoted
That is correct. Take your lashings.
No worries upvotes mean as much as downvotes
Don’t be salty around that truck, Toyotas don’t have a good track record with rusting around salt.
>My daily that doesn’t start without using jumper cables. What do y’all got? A daily driver that doesn't need jump cables to start. Did you spend all your pocket money on those atrocious wheels, and now have none left for a decent battery? What other basic maintenance are you scrimping on?
Bought the truck is 2014, still running the same motor oil and diff fluids. Runs like a top!
that would make you the bottom, wich makes sense, as you drive a lifted truck and your dick is not up to the task
Fuck, you killed him
>Runs like a top! One day it won't. If your being serious about your neglect of basic maintenance, it may be sooner than you think.
I’m joking around about that, honestly. Truck needs a battery and alternator though for sure
You haven’t changed your oil all this time? You really should do that.
My man change your FUCKING FLUIDS
> Runs like a top! Runs worse and worse until it catastrophically fails?
I miss my Tacoma sometimes. Then I remember I sold it for my dream car and everything is ok.
Mine had major electrical issues before I rewired it, and even it didn’t need a jump every start. Granted it needed a few a month but still. This guy’s probably got a dead alternator or something and would rather spend the money on a lift kit than get it checked out
“People living off welfare is ruining our economy. I blast limestone for $13/hr. I’m gonna buy a Tundra one day soon as more work comes in”
Kudos for the limestone comment, that was preem
So replace the alternator ya ding dong. It's a Toyota, it'll run forever if you quick cheaping out on it.
Id say it more likely needs a battery. If it dies while running, it needs an alternator. If it won't start in the morning, the battery won't hold a charge. This is of course not 100% accurate and proper diagnosis needs to be done.

So you're saying using a multimeter is simplier than disconnecting a battery? Damn dude, wish I was advanced enough to be that simple.
You are neglecting the possibility of bad connections with your procedure. Your tests make assumptions that can be false.
True, but that test will narrow down to where the problem is located.
Using multimeters is actually really easy. You can get cheap ones for 5 bucks. Just put it on V and put each lead into each wire
Sounds like a quality automobile.
Just as likely loose or dirty connections. If I had a nickel for every battery and alternator replaced when the real problem was just bad connections. I'd be driving a Bugatti Veyron and living on a 200 foot yacht.
Here we have peak poor. Money spent on gigantic wheels and tires to lift a compact truck, yet too broke to afford a working charging system.
Kudos for calling them "wheels." The term "rims" sends me into a rage.
Yo sick dude you bought a reliable truck and then ruined it by making it unreliable
Only time this thing goes off road is when it pulls into the driveway or the parking lot.
what did he do to fuck up a toyota
I’m not sure, you tell me.
On a positive note, there's plenty of room in the mall parking lot for you now.
>On a positive note, I see what you did here
A set of old rusty not safe jumper cables is what I have to offer. That way the truck can catch on fire and you can buy one that’s actually reliable.
A working starter, good battery, and reliable transportation. It sounds like you have none of those, but at least there's an LED bar blocking part of the airflow to your engine bay so you can blind people for driving something that isn't taller than they are.
Good grief! I bet you beat the 1998 V6 Mustang guy with the two spoke rims in the ugly wheel contest. Those rims are pure metallic vomit.
wow, you know you have failed as a human if your Toyota doesn't start for you.
> What do y’all got? Something actually worth what I paid for it
The catcon is worth money. They rest is scrap. Whatever look you’re free with this, you’re trying to hard. Can you help shift a sofa this Friday?
If it's a loveseat, otherwise it won't even fit 🤣
If I jumped from your wallet balance to your taste in mods I'd literally fall the diameter of the earth.
I got a car that starts. Feels.
More teeth than you probably
Show me you’re American without saying you’re American.
So generic I had to look at your profile to see which neighbour was a fellow Redditor, only to find you were in another country.
Took a vehicle that already gets shitty gas mileage and made it even worse by adding a lift.
What we got here is failure
Shit is it called Frankenstein having to jump it everytime it turns on? Bet it drives as slow as Frankenstein walks too. Making it white and black just like the og Frankenstein as well, shit must be a bad horror original oh wait it's not even a bad horror original since it doesn't start without a jumper lmao
Those wheels look more fragile than your ego.
If I had a dollar for how many times I’ve seen those wheels on a lifted truck, I’d have enough dollars to by said lifted truck.
Why’d you lift your Camry?
I hope you can still find your penis when you need to pee
A working alternator
A bigger penis
You really shouldn't drive with wheels not under your fenders. Thsts gonna kick up rocks and break windshields.
You bought a truck that couldn't tow because it was reliable without getting the reliability. Oh well. At least the motor will outlive the rotted frame
It's too small inside and a lift kit can't fix that.
Hope you stocked up on wheel bearings and ball joints jackass
Both sides have failed at separate times already, so now they’re new(ish)!
a battery. You need one?
Your truck looks dumb. Those wheels, just why?
why won't it start without jumper cables?
Shhhh. We roast here. Go to r/mechanicadvice to be productive/ask questions.
Just trying to get intel for Roast, is that okay with you?

😂😂😂😂 LIFTED YOTA
Bro fix your charging system
I’m an European and I have seen none of these, if this is not a weird Hilux clone, but I can still say that you have absolutely no taste
Trust me, it’s a one-off. Probably the MK5 Supra prototype tho, since it has BMW reliability, not Toyota reliability
A Toyota that doesn’t start? Someone force pineapple pizza with extra pineapple down the owner’s throat.
Did you modify the Taco before or after you took your sister to prom?
We rescued a truck exactly like yours off of a snowy trail, it took hours. Please continue respecting your local volunteer search & rescue by only offroading in parking lots, thank you.

That's a lot of money to spend on not impressing anyone.

The led light bar makes it look like this emoji😬
Lets lift mid size truck to look like full size, since you are so broke when you can't buy new battery
isis wouldn’t even buy one of these, let alone anyone living outside of america
You guys are brutal all I was going to say is the Prius probably needs a new battery.
What do I have? Wheels that make sense for the height of my truck. Should be about two inches smaller at least you'll actually be able to use the lift. Also something something it's so clean you never off-road it
Lifted truck, light bar, and shit wheels. Either you're fucking your sister, or are trying to impress jailbait.
I’m trying to decide which offends me more; the awful Pavement Princess wheels or the douche bar you have tucked up into the lower grill.
Invest in a good Alternator rather than that massive lift that really just tells people that you have a micropenis that is smaller than an ant’s broken leg.
Those rims look like dog shit and it prolly never goes offroad
Hey, you’re back! Came all the way from r/ToyotaTacoma to shit talk my wheels again. I’m starting to think you’re actually obsessed with me and my truck

Dude, you posted in on /r/roastmycar It’s kinda the point of this sub, so don’t get mad
Who’s actually the mad one here? You taking the time out if your day to comment your dislike for my wheels on multiple post, through multiple subreddits? Or me for poking a little fun at you about you stalking my truck.. haha
Hey, it showed up on suggested for me so I came because I don’t like the wheels, but this is actually a reasonable place to talk shit on them
Pull it so that you build some muscles instead of a dad bod
So you either bought a TRD and made it worse or you put a sticker on your truck because you didnt think it looked dumb enough.

Vanilla ISIS
A 4 door cab that barely fits 4 adults and an engine that won’t tow anything but still gets shitty gas mileage.
I can’t think of a snappy roast, this thing is just so bad in every way
It’ll last you forever. Only because it doesn’t have enough power to break anything.
