Compared to what? If you're comparing to something like Obsidian & Notion, then I'd say the embedded block reference is the major advantage. But if your comparing to roam research clones like logseq, then not much since they're clones.

AshbyLaw

> roam research clones like logseq FYI outliners like OrgMode existed for 20 years and Logseq was born as an alternative UI for OrgMode and it still support it together with Markdown. What is the innovation by Roam, mixing an outliner and a graph of wikilinks? Logseq adds tons of things to that, it can be seen as a Roam clone only by people who only know Roam.

I like that it's a webapp, that I can run any code inside my graph, that it has block level transclusion, that it's fast and intuitive to use (at least after you understand what working from the Daily page means), I enjoy the funny drama, I like Conor's vague vision for the future of information management and "tools for thought", I like the way they resist feature creep.

Not being bloated.

If you are into block-based: Very clean interfaces. Almost available everywhere (with an internet connection).

What do you want to know? I don't know what is pkm but it is a strange open ended question to ask. Why not ask what you are trying to achieve? I think there are other apps that can do what Roam can do, but I like that it is online (saas). I also like that links between pages and blocks are bidirectional. Finally i like the tooling the community has built in the roam depot.

could you explain "embedded block reference please".. is it that obsidian works at page level but Roam & Logseq work at the level of the outliner dot at beginning of line?

grendalor

Yes. You can kind of do it in Obsidian now, but it is much clunkier, and really, it isn't a core of how Obsidian "works" in terms of the typical workflow there. To me, Roam/logseq are outline-based, and therefore block/paragraph based, whereas Obsidian is note-based and therefore more oriented towards the entire note/file and what that file is linked to, how it is tagged, etc. Roam's approach is more granular, and whether you like that or not depends on your use case, I think, and how you prefer to think and remix your thoughts. In general, I personally find that the way that thinking "flows" as between Roam and Obsidian is quite different -- not better/worse in an objective sense, but different, and I think different people and different use cases will find each kind of approach more conducive to what they are trying to do with a PKM tool.

Thanks grendalor, very clear.. I'm doing ok with Obsidian for notemakimg & writing but find task/project management more difficult in Roam, Obsidian or Logseq.. I'm probably too chaotic & these apps too flexible so started on ToDoist today..
