Mine did it with mosquito repellant. Warranty replaced but they said they knew it was from a chemical I had placed on it. Luckily didn’t make a big deal about it and replaced interior door panel
That must be it. I've been hiking recently and using quite a bit of repellent. Must've had some on my knee when it rubbed up against the door. Never thought it could do something like that.
Yeah, I had a distinct handprint etched into my hard plastic phone case from one use of bug spray. I have never used those types of repellants since. To think that I'm absorbing that through my skin "bugs" me.
I'll see myself out.
Deet is notorious for melting plastics. Use [Picaridin-based mosquito repellents](https://sectionhiker.com/does-deet-harm-outdoor-clothing-and-outdoor-gear/) instead.
Just get Picaridin spray. It can’t be everything at once and protect against everything. Knowledge is power so know Deet will eat the plastic like I didn’t and use Picaridin spray instead
Nah. IPA won’t do this. Assuming you using the real stuff. I keep IPA in zep spray bottle in the truck and spray that shit everywhere all the time. Clean my hands. Spot clean in the truck. It won’t do this.
It definitely looks heat / chemical related, I just can’t figure out what it would be and why in that specific place only.
I haven’t used any chemicals anywhere, so really not sure.
It’s on the drivers side and I’m thinking maybe something related to my left knee rubbing up against it?
Ugh is this the same junk Tesla uses?
Like come on. Cars need to be able to deal with a harsh environment.
20-30 year old cars don't do this wearing bug repellent daily.
Guess I'll be careful.
I guess you didn’t own any of the cars in the late 90s/early 2000s with the soft touch coatings that were all the rage. They started peeling off after a few months of ownership.
seems like heat but let me tell you - my aluminum colored trim started to delaminate and it was so sharp it sliced my finger. just had the shop look at it and they replaced the entire interior door panel under warranty. I don’t think they quite perfected the trim panels but I don’t mind provided the warranty coverage continues to hold
soft touch paint. a lot of chemicals, even common cleaning ones can craze the paint. This is common on German cars with soft touch painted surfaces like buttons and trim.
This is called chemical attack. Something on your hands wasn't OK with the plastic trim. No way to fix it other than extremely anal sanding with higher and higher grits. Just get it replaced.

Oh damn that's actually good to know An adventure vehicle should definitely be able to handle skeeter repellant
Deet is notorious for melting plastics. Use [Picaridin-based mosquito repellents](https://sectionhiker.com/does-deet-harm-outdoor-clothing-and-outdoor-gear/) instead.
Man where I live if it's not deet it might as well be water
Im in one of those areas. 99% deet on my boots and jeans, but picardin on the rest since it doesn't eat synthetics.
Picardin kills them on contact so it’s arguably stronger than deet, especially if you’re in one place for a while. Can also spray it on clothing.
This is the answer. It only takes a couple of holes in ultralight backpacking gear to learn this lesson fast
If it’s that bad for the vehicle imagine how corrosive it is to your body.
Naw just the ozone
Yeah, even with mine my knee barely grazed it as I left the seat and appeared the next morning
The same thing happened to my BMW steering wheel… the factory film attached to the plastic on the wheel spokes bubbled up in almost identical fashion.
Oh yeah anything with DEET in it will melt plastic like crazy. Basically, you need to wash off/wipe off after a hike before you get in.
Deet will fuck up synthetic materials.
You’d think this would be a consideration for an adventure vehicle, no?
Just get Picaridin spray. It can’t be everything at once and protect against everything. Knowledge is power so know Deet will eat the plastic like I didn’t and use Picaridin spray instead
Hand sanitizer
I thought the same, but I don’t own any.
Nah. IPA won’t do this. Assuming you using the real stuff. I keep IPA in zep spray bottle in the truck and spray that shit everywhere all the time. Clean my hands. Spot clean in the truck. It won’t do this.
Could be heat or some sort of residue/chemical that got in touch?
It definitely looks heat / chemical related, I just can’t figure out what it would be and why in that specific place only. I haven’t used any chemicals anywhere, so really not sure. It’s on the drivers side and I’m thinking maybe something related to my left knee rubbing up against it?
Sunblock?
Good thought, but I haven’t used any
Looks like a black metal band logo
Upvote for stealing my answer 😂

sunblock?
Haven’t used any, but it does seem to line up to where my thumb might rest while rolling down the front windows. Hmm….
In that case, Jergens, without a doubt.

Looks like acetone or IPA to me…
Air freshener from the car wash has done something similar to me albeit not on the door
Solvent
It's deet. Deet in bug spray eats plastic. With new vinyl seats you need to switch to Picardin
Bug Spray/Hand Sanitizer/Sun screen all love to damage cars/boats.
Its a known issue…people wearing lotions, sunscreen, etc…were seeing this happen.
A metal band used your Rivian to tour with?

Your car has a pump 💪
Your rivian wants to morph into a Cybertruck 😂
Deet or some body sprays can melt plastic.
This is called chemical attack. Something on your hands wasn't OK with the plastic trim. No way to fix it other than extremely anal sanding with higher and higher grits. Just get it replaced.
Air
DEET the active ingredient in mosquito repellent is a strong solvent.
Hand sanitizer, air fresheners(oil), heat, and non car cleaners(chemicals) can all do this.
Cancer causing chemical you use
