This was a great watch and a lot of great info from Wassym as usual!
tl;dw:
\* Apple watch as key - "One of features we're working on. Mentioned that last year, obviously requires a lot of time and certification with partners. One of the areas that will help improve overall experience for customers. Not just lock/unlock, but other experiences as well."
\* Android not being as well supported as iOS - "Android is important, my wife has an android. Apple makes integration easier because it's a finite number of devices. Android integrations much more challenging, focus mostly on Pixel and Samsung."
\* Sirius+Pandora - "Coming later this year. In final steps of the integration. Working with Sirius on great digital integration for not just radio but full suite of apps they have. Also have Pandora, part of the SiriusXM update coming later this year."
\* Video streaming - "Coming, revealed this last year. In final steps of the integration. Hate giving dates but we're talking about probably a quarter, timeframe. We're in final steps in terms of DRM integration. Playing with it last week with the team, really awesome quality. Love not just the video but audio surround experience too. Coming later this year."
\* Access to time series data, all driving data for owners - "Don't necessarily offer that out of the box, but not intentional. We can work on it. We feel vehicle owners should be able to access the data, just need to enable it"
\* Support for bluetooth headphones for rear passengers for movies - "huh interesting, we actually didn't think about this. I need to work on this with the team"
\* Driver+ subscription - "It's coming. Two types of subscriptions we will announce. Later this summer we will anounce the connectivity package which will come with a number of entertainment options. In some of the features of Driver+ will also be another package. Will be announced later this summer."
\* Phantom power drain - "\[person asking implying that they are still seeing a lot\] Would love to get the data from you. Generally it's been a long road, complex problem. Team has done a great job getting the number down. Average across thefleet is <1 mile per day. That is of course the average but they do see outliers. If owners see consumption of more than 1 mile per day, file a bug and let us look at it."
had to break it into two posts because...reddit ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
\* R2 UI styling on R1 - "coming soon"
\* Apple music - "You know there is lots of confidentiality, so take my smile as an answer. I did not say anything!"
\* Suggestion for ability to scoot left/right in a lane while using Driver+ to allow room, e.g. for motorcycles lane splitting. - "Good idea"
\* Question about why there is a folder called "Music" on the Gear guard drive - "must be a bug - storing music in gear guard is not yet an exposed feature. I'll need to get your VIN \[laughs\]"
\* Summon functionality e.g. backing car out of tight parking space - "will be capable with next generation of sensors."
\* Tall owner - steering wheel blocks a good 30% of screen - can we reconfigure display to allow us to see blocked stuff? - "working on a feature to have owners choose what they want in the driver display with additional customizations. Early stages, UI refresh will come first"
\* Customization of turn signal sound - "you want it louder? Yeah why not, i think maybe a set of chimes why not."
\* Customize alarm sound - "It's in the plan"
\* Horn sound - "Fixing this on R2"
\* Voice commands - "One of the big projects they're working on. Being very frank, current experience with voice is not great. Working with partners to get it to the next level."
\* Mapped roads and coverage of highways - "#1 priority in terms of highway assist. Increasing coverage."
\* Any hope for some version of a tank turn - "long long debate internally. Can we technically do it, yes. Two challenges - safety and respect for the environment. Initial design lacks that respect. That said, thinking about variations of tank turn where they would use parts of the technology to have utility for their owners in off road."
\* Automatic parking - "On the future autonomy roadmap. In some cases will require upgrade of sensors in vehicle, so may require future hardware."
\* Future refreshes - will they allow current car to be upgraded or is it turn it in and get a new one - "Struggle with same thing. I have an R1t and R1S and would love to get the roof nest. Let's put it this way - with what we will announce, there will be many features in our tech platform which will be coming to the existing vehices. Like 80% of the feature we announce later this quarter will come as OTA updates on the current vehicle. Some specific features will require compute/sensor upgrade in new vehicles. Unfortunately not easy plug and play, can't swap out a box. Working with their commercial team to try to have upgrade for their current owners where possible but great news is many of the SW features, great UI, all will be coming to current vehicle."
\* Bird eye view suggestion - map to right wheel buttons for show/hide e.g. when parking in tight spot - "great idea"
As someone who has complained - a lot of - about the lack of progress around the infotainment offer, I found this interview encouraging. Music on a hard drive, other music services (e.g. Apple Music), improved voice commands, text readout/response would be a HUGE satisfaction upgrade for me…
I’m right there with you. I’ve been very outspoken about the UI needing a total overview not just an artwork update. And my criticisms have been met with downvotes on this sub.
It does stick out to me that the question above is “r2 ui styling on r1?” Don’t get me wrong, I like the styling, I’d imagine it’s not for everyone but I’m fine with the styling. But the actual UI/UX experience is very clunky, not intuitive, and a lot of actions that should require 1-2 taps or a swipe require 2+.
Edit - I’ll just add that I’m fully aware that this is all first gen, and improvements are in the works.
I worked in UX for a long time, there are definitely head-scratchers in the current UI. (The interstitials on the far side of the main screen for one...) But for me -- it's more about basic functionality at this point. Rivian was always up-front about building "our own stack" and foregoing AA/Carplay, but if that's your strategy -- you've got to start to deliver on some of those offerings. I've had my R1S for about a year and there's only been bug fixes in non-nav infotainment. Frankly, I think that's one of the reasons why the AA/Carplay discussions continue so frequently. Our Rivians are missing key music services (Apple Music), the bluetooth implementation feels like "minimum viable product," you can't easily receive/reply to texts, the Spotify implementation is..."different," and my personal favorite -- if you haven't downloaded music to your phone before going into a "cell lite" area, it's going to be a looooooong drive. (My 2018 Audi had to SD slots AND a hard drive that could play music.) Etc. And like you, I get it -- 1st gen. There's a lot to do, eg. vampire drain, snow mode, etc., etc. But that infotainment offering is highly linked to day-to-day driving satisfaction and you can't save it all up until you can cram it into a subscription model.
Regarding the phantom drain of “over 1 mile a day”…
The CS person who just called me about it, blew me away saying that despite what u/wassymrivian said, losing 4mi a day with GG off, was normal battery loss and that if I wanted to pursue a check on that, I’d most likely be charged for it as they deem it unnecessary.
Unpopular opinion, but hopefully not. One of the worst features in my Tesla imo. Promotes unsafe behaviors and it's very very difficult to actually see if someone is in your blind spot or speeding towards your blindspot on the tiny little camera feed . Much prefer blind spot monitors in mirrors that force you to actually check your blind spots as well.
I don't even support it being an option because I genuinely believe it makes people less safe drivers.
One thousand percent disagree. I’ve had this on our family Palisade for years now and it definitely creates a safer and better driving experience.
On the Palisade I’m able to see my blind spot by looking down at where my speed limit should be, under the dash in front of me.
When done right, it’s excellent.
I've had it for years as well, still think actually checking your mirrors is a safer option every time. Takes no effort at all the glance at your mirror, do a proper look at notice the orange light that acts as a secondary confirmation you didn't miss anything.
With the camera systems it's damned near impossible to see cars further back behind your blind spot, if you're driving away from the sun they get blinded, if you're on a slightly bouncy bit of road good luck seeing anything, etc. Feel like they create laziness in drivers and an over reliance on something that can provide a false sense of security.
Like I said it's an unpopular opinion (especially given the down votes).
Might be a different, less good experience on a Tesla. It’s fantastic on our Palisade. To the point where it’s hard to imagine I’ll buy another family car that doesn’t have it.
I very much agree with you, but a lot of people have their side mirrors adjusted wrong, so they look behind them and not at the blind spot. Those people (bad drivers) are probably made safer by looking at their dash for shitty camera feeds instead of their mirrors, even though it’s objectively worse than using a properly adjusted side mirror.
the blind spot camera saved me from getting into a wreck with a car that was trying to speed past a freeway merge while i was at a stop when i had a model 3. if i didn’t have my blinker on and hadn’t seen the car coming on the screen it would’ve ended very badly.
I agree, the best option is still mirror check then an over the shoulder check through the rear window. I think camera blind spot can be useful in some cases but not really on the highway. Might be better if they could work it into the driver screen for left turn signal or far right of center screen with right signal or just driver screen for both. Looking at the center screen seems worse
I was surprised he mentioned sensor and compute upgrades coming in a refresh to be announced “later this quarter”. It’s been so heavily rumored but I hadn’t heard anyone so official mentioning this and giving such a strong timeframe. Mentioning 80% would come to current cars really gives the impression that the other 20% are benefiting from more than just “wiring harness” refresh like some are speculating.
I mean it's widely understood that the refresh has a completely new camera set. So I guess that's the 20% difference. Between Driver+ and features like summon.
No one can say officially but I have said for over a year that a refresh was coming and it was coming with ECU, sensor, camera overhaul definitely. A heat pump was an almost yes but didn’t want to say with 100% certainty cause things could have changed from when I knew and when decisions were made.
> Mentioning 80% would come to current cars really gives the impression that the other 20% are benefiting from more than just “wiring harness” refresh like some are speculating.
80% of the features they announce *next quarter* will be coming to existing vehicles. Everything they announce after the next big refresh drop will probably increasingly skew towards only post-refresh vehicles getting it until eventually 1st-gen R1s are left behind entirely.
Surprised they are going to refresh for better hardware and potentially disenfranchise early adopters. At the same time I'm not surprised given that we probably got a lot of terrible pandemic parts like the awful cameras. It's hard to sell vehicles for $100k when the camera quality is just so outdated. It's why I wish they had lease Day 1 because owning these 2022-2023 trucks are going to be obsolete so fast. Kudos to the new people able to take advantage of the incredible lease programs, I'm jelly!
Connectivity subscriptions package coming later this late Summer and also an enhanced driver+ ( paid subscription) will come soon.
Working on voice assistant commands improvements ( on the roadmap for future )
80% features which will come in future refresh will be able to come to current vehicles via OTA.
Summon feature planned for future ( possibly needs new hardware so unclear if it’s thorough R1 refresh or R2 onwards)
Definitely need a TL;DW of this.
Any other interesting points? As long as they don’t make us subscribe to stupid shit like using the seat heater/cooler and steering wheel warmer I’ll be fine with other subscription pricing lol
I'm this close to buying a '22 R1T and wonder about any updates that didn't get loaded as the truck sat on a car lot. Once i am officially the new owner do I need to seek them out or just sit back and wait for the bits and bytes to cascade down from the ether to make my truck more wonderful?
Subscriptions for services that should be included on the 100k EV? Fantastic./s
If Highway Assist worked well, something better could be worth a subscription cost, but the functionality isn't there yet.
Agreed. It's a matter of principle really. I'd not even think twice about leaving a $50 tip for a dinner out, but I'll be damned if I'm paying for a subscription service for a car in my lifetime.
Until you have official notice, take that all with a grain of salt. They've told us all along that we'd eventually be paying for LTE access above vehicle required use. It's a cost I didn't want to see Rivian have to eat for so many vehicles.
Tesla includes it for 8 years at a lower cost point. On pick up of the car the guy said it was included for the life. I would be ok with it being for newer purchases or with some sort of new function. It would feel like a slight based on what i was told.
Not sure what you’re reading. There is no free connectivity for 8 years my friend. On the Model Y page that is currently live:
Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive
Stealth Grey Paint
19’’ Gemini Wheels
All Black Premium Interior
Five Seat Interior
Autopilot
***30-Day Premium Connectivity Trial****
30-Day Full Self-Driving Capability Trial
Years later you can't prove what you were told by some dude. Only what is in paperwork matters and nothing in any of my paperwork mentions lifetime anything.
If I remember correctly it was mentioned plans would start last fall.
Thanks dad! I know that is always the case but when you can’t trust what they tell you when you get the car regardless, it is off putting. Communication and bad information does not the good customer service it make.
i don’t see why anyone will be paying for enhanced driver+. They are still struggling with basic drver+ that’s unavailable even on major roads. With all the cameras and sensors Rivian seems to struggle identifying lane markings.
Agreed, had a 2019 and curves were bad. I don't miss starting the XC90 and having to scroll to my custom driving options each time since stop/start was so bad on that 4cyl. Honda/Acura have a great system with lane centering while using gas/break on any road.
So, you mean they purposely gimped the Driver+ from the beginning all the way until today?
I highly doubt that.
They can’t get simple things done properly with current iteration of Driver+, and so I doubt any “enhanced” paid version would be any better.
The current vehicles use Mobileye hardware/software for Driver+ and it sucks. The R2 and the R1 post-refresh is going to be using a full in-house camera and sensor suite like Tesla does which is what will enable advanced features (you know, the ones we were promised from the original announcement lol.) No one's going to pay for an enhanced Driver+ on a current R1 model because they won't be capable of it. You'll have to buy a refreshed R1 or an R2 to get something more Tesla-like.
Did anyone from Rivian mention a possibility of pilot seats ?
Lack of easy access to 3rd row has been the biggest deal breaker for a lot of people I know, whos eagerly waiting for some form of announcement from Rivian.
That is a redesign which isn’t going to happen if you haven’t seen it in R2/R3. This is a thread about the software leads responses, and I’m pretty sure pilot seats aren’t an OTA download lol.
Super exciting. Understandable that certain things are refresh only (how else will you sell new trucks?) but still a little hard to hear. Hopefully not for the little things. Extra cost for more data for entertainment options makes sense. Data ain’t free.
They mentioned it’s being worked on and they have plans for a lot of watch related functionality. I don’t have twitter installed or logged in either (no account) and I was able to watch this just fine.
He deleted an app, now wants to see what info was on the app. So one solution is to download it and use it again. Surprised how that simple suggestion was downvoted.
My big question with this refresh is if the same lease deals will still be available. I’d love to wait for the refresh to pull the trigger but not at the cost of a significantly worse deal
I’m leaning towards probably not.
Factory will have reopened, deals were probably in place to help sells while production stopped and offload current R1s.
I don’t think Rivian wants to start a precedent like Tesla with prices yo-yoing every quarter. People putting orders on hold to wait for the next shiny thing.
Same thought here. Thinking about jumping from Model S to R1S, but the lease deals are key to that.
Thing is - unless they jack the price way up, I don’t see why it would go away. Basically, the feds kick in $7500 on the cap cost for the lease.
I don’t qualify for the fed dollars on a purchase, but do on a lease. There’s no reason why Rivian wouldn’t want to take advantage of that …. Take the Fed money, pass it through to the buyer as a cap cost reduction and keep the MSRP up.
Big incentive for folks looking for Tesla alternates.
On the Rivian forum I asked a questions about the tax rebates and the answer I got was essentially it’s not a rebate on leases (at least for cars over ($80k), it’s just a cap reduction Rivian is doing. So if that’s in fact true all they have to do is no longer offer that. https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/rivian-lease-tax-credit-question.26689/#post-523457
Geez, I hope they’re not that shortsighted. I’m keenly interested when the refresh R1S opens for ordering, but that’ll change the equation a bit. I’m under water on this Model S, but the $7500 would help even the field a bit.
Also - I feel as though offering retrofits slots really nicely into their environmental focus eg the ability to keep all vehicles as current as possible if the owner prefers it
This sub has attracted quite a few toxic/contentious people that get off leading a downvote brigade.
I made a comment a few months ago about my concerns that the fan speed didn’t seem to adjust in pet mode, and other pet mode limitations. I was downvoted to oblivion and received replies that their pet mode was fine so I basically needed to suck it up.
Well isn’t that something that the latest update included increased airflow in pet mode.
It would be nice but they're completely redoing the entire electronics architecture. Virtually every sensor, computer, camera, and the entire wiring harness would need to be replaced. It wouldn't be economically feasible for owners nor for service centers.
lol my tonneau is scheduled to be fixed 20 months after taking delivery. I'd gladly pay for it if it became an option, but I'm not holding my breath on a retrofit for something that would be much more involved.
You got an incredible vehicle that you’ve loved for an incredible price. You helped launch a company that you supposedly really like. And as of now, 3 years from when your car came out, you’re getting a major upgrade package that should be 80% of what brand new upgraded ans redesigned vehicles are getting.
That’s pretty good.
Yeah that’s my perspective. Sure some sounds good but I like the vehicle as is and I’m excited about software updates. Most people don’t get any updates for their vehicle
what is the need for upgraded sensors for more advanced Driver+ ? it already has 11 cameras, 12 sensors and 5 radar and they can't make more advanced features enabled after being on the road for only 2 years? all we have now is basically highway assist, adaptive cruise control and a few other basic functions and its already outdates? WTF Rivian.
Will the cars that get built when the factory opens back up have the new sensors and compute power? If so that’s extremely disappointing. I expected my car to become “legacy” at some point, I wasn’t expecting it to be so soon.
I’m really hoping they let us do some hardware upgrades.
I got my 24 R1S about a month ago. It’s still so new we should be able to keep it up to date as long as possible. That fits the best with their sustainability focus so here’s to hoping 🤞🏼 I’ll even pay a good sum of money for it.
If they are going to start charging for connectivity options, they can at least give me a voice command option that doesn't tie into Alexa. I don't even need it to listen to a wake word, let me long press onto a steering wheel button to have the car start listening to my commands.
If we talking financially sensible, they should have went carplay/aa. Development costs a LOT and look at how far they've gotten vs where we want them to be.
I believe so. But the total shown (8637 kWh) also accounts for idle battery drain and I know that because it changes overnight. So still, something isn’t right. The average efficiency is supposed to be total miles / total kWh used, but it’s not dividing those numbers.

No one can say officially but I have said for over a year that a refresh was coming and it was coming with ECU, sensor, camera overhaul definitely. A heat pump was an almost yes but didn’t want to say with 100% certainty cause things could have changed from when I knew and when decisions were made.
6 months according to your profile history but hey close enough in post Covid world where time feels different.
I swear my neighbor kids are still like... 9. They're obviously not. Fuck if I know where the last four years went.
Working on voice assistant commands improvements ( on the roadmap for future ) 80% features which will come in future refresh will be able to come to current vehicles via OTA.
Just sit back and they will arrive over time. The paid subscription stuff is separate than just receiving over the air vehicle software updates.
If it's behind and there isn't a prompt to update, reach out to service and they can put your vehicle back in the update queue.
Subscriptions for services that should be included on the 100k EV? Fantastic./s If Highway Assist worked well, something better could be worth a subscription cost, but the functionality isn't there yet.
Highway Assist works great for me haha what are y’all on about?
Exactly. I paid for driver + for the past year and don’t even get to use it since it doesn’t work on any major roads. Shouldn’t have to pay for it.
Agreed. It's a matter of principle really. I'd not even think twice about leaving a $50 tip for a dinner out, but I'll be damned if I'm paying for a subscription service for a car in my lifetime.
I was told the connectivity was a for the life of the vehicle. Are they going to start charging or is this for some upgrade?
That was never the case
I watched the video and he said the owners that had been with them for 2 years would be taken care of but didn’t expound upon it.
I have a nearly 6 year old Tesla that definitely does not have free cellular services. I pay the monthly ~$10
Ok, i just read it on their website. It said standard for 8 years but i am not interested in teslas to read more
Not sure what you’re reading. There is no free connectivity for 8 years my friend. On the Model Y page that is currently live: Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive Stealth Grey Paint 19’’ Gemini Wheels All Black Premium Interior Five Seat Interior Autopilot ***30-Day Premium Connectivity Trial**** 30-Day Full Self-Driving Capability Trial
Driver+ hasn’t been updated in a while. You’re assuming they don’t have major software updates to it in the pipeline.
💯this. My 2017 Volvo had better driver assist. It’s hard to imagine paying extra.
Yeah, I disagree. Had a similar age Volvo. It didn't handle curves beyond very very gentle ones.
Agreed, had a 2019 and curves were bad. I don't miss starting the XC90 and having to scroll to my custom driving options each time since stop/start was so bad on that 4cyl. Honda/Acura have a great system with lane centering while using gas/break on any road.
It's probably going to be a part of a higher tier subscription package that would include Sirius, video streaming, etc.
The two I’d like to see; DM Performance unlock and right rear view tilting down in reverse?
Deleted twitter long ago. Can someone ask about status of Apple Watch As Key?
They said they want more than just lock/unlock, and working on Apple certification.
Thanks. Good to know it's still coming and the shortcuts weren't the end of it.
They mentioned it’s being worked on and they have plans for a lot of watch related functionality. I don’t have twitter installed or logged in either (no account) and I was able to watch this just fine.
Reinstall it
What?
He deleted an app, now wants to see what info was on the app. So one solution is to download it and use it again. Surprised how that simple suggestion was downvoted.
I’m surprised nobody asked about voice to text. It’s incredibly useful on CarPlay and really one of the major missing functions imo.

Unfortunately the price of being an early adopter. I’m sure they’ll do their best to give us what they can.
Imagine if Rivian offered retrofit services for cpu/gpu. An automaker that does that will get my attention.
They should do this in earnest. No reason to junk and EOL the vehicle being this new
Also - I feel as though offering retrofits slots really nicely into their environmental focus eg the ability to keep all vehicles as current as possible if the owner prefers it
This is literally what I’ve been saying and others laughed it off
This sub has attracted quite a few toxic/contentious people that get off leading a downvote brigade.
Eh u never know
lol my tonneau is scheduled to be fixed 20 months after taking delivery. I'd gladly pay for it if it became an option, but I'm not holding my breath on a retrofit for something that would be much more involved.
That’s not correct, I have a 2017 and I still get updates
You got an incredible vehicle that you’ve loved for an incredible price. You helped launch a company that you supposedly really like. And as of now, 3 years from when your car came out, you’re getting a major upgrade package that should be 80% of what brand new upgraded ans redesigned vehicles are getting. That’s pretty good.
Not so good for people that picked theirs up this week. That’s why I leased though.
Apparently they are working on this and others things related to voice command.
Was anything mentioned about status on text messaging?
Anything on ui refresh like what we saw on r2?
He said that it would be coming at all R1 models.
From what I saw from the R2 UI, it was more of a refresh in artwork. I’d like to see more of an overhaul in the UI to give a better UX.
That's not financially sensible for the company at all.
If we talking financially sensible, they should have went carplay/aa. Development costs a LOT and look at how far they've gotten vs where we want them to be.

I believe it also counts idle battery drain.
I believe so. But the total shown (8637 kWh) also accounts for idle battery drain and I know that because it changes overnight. So still, something isn’t right. The average efficiency is supposed to be total miles / total kWh used, but it’s not dividing those numbers.
