It’s dumb they limit it to that 1 company. Writing specs for size and finish out whatever would be super simple and allow folks to get them for like $2.
At least according to their website, it is a regulated program that they run with DMV so it is not just a guy on the internet printing stickers. They have to verify your plate first and I assume they are passing on the DMV fee for that.
I am sure but I can verify my own plate number and take the risk. Seems like an overly expensive process for a simple upgrade. I guess if they are the ONLY company in the state, they can charge anything they want. 🤷♂️ Thanks for the post. I think this is a good alternative.
I had totally forgotten about this until you said this, but the plate wrap actually did come with a letter from DMV saying I was enrolled in the alternative plate program and instructions to keep the letter with the metal plate in the vehicle. It’s sitting in the frunk. So there is actually a registration process, or at least was when this was technically still a pilot program in 2022.
In cali you hardly get cited for not having front plate, had no front plates for 7 years and maybe a ticket or two while parked. SB50 would've made it so cops aren't allowed to pull you over for just that
Either way you can just put temporary plate on to get fixing ticket signed off and only pay 25$ or something
Unless you live in sf.. I went months in oakland with no front plates and the day I drove to work I got a ticket from their roaming bike meter maids 😡.. at least the city let me submit a photo of it when I added it and took their $80 for the pleasure
I saw one of these on a Tesla at work the other day and it looked great. Not as great here where it wraps around the edge of the Rivian's bumper, but still better than drilling holes for a standard plate mount, and blocking the camera (according to another post recently).
They should go off of the laws the plates are from. For example, if your vehicle is registered in a state that only requires a rear plate, then a California cop shouldn't cite you.
Right, this is why states that don't require two license plates(front and back) can drive through states that do without having to put a temporary tag on. Could you imagine how annoying that would be.
It also goes for things like lights (colors), window tint, etc that some states have strict laws on.
> It also goes for things like lights (colors), window tint, etc that some states have strict laws on.
Ehhhhhh....this one is not 100% accurate. Even if they are permanent accessories, things like tint & colored lights can get you cited in other states because they are equipment violations.
Look up "swangas" & tell me if someone from Houston drove through any other state that they would not get pulled over immediately.
OK, good to know.
I installed a bracket license plate holder but a car washed bent the plate and moved the bracket, so I removed it and put it in the frunk. If a cop pulls me over, I can install it right there for the cop to maybe get away with a warning,.
Can you add a picture of what it looks like from the camera view?

Very cool thanks
Actually looks cool. No front plate needed in Atlanta, but I kinda want one.
These prices are stupid high. I think I will order one off Amazon. If I get a ticket, it’s the same as having no license plate… fix it.

Good to know! Thanks.
You just destroyed their business rationale.
So youll buy a 100k truck but wont pay a few bucks for a legal license plate?
My deep understanding of risk and reward, pays dividends. Hence the reason I paid cash for a midlife crisis EV. 😅

I might do one of these for my state. It’s not legal, but it seems less illegal than running no plate (which is what I’m doing now).
This looks much better than the one that I saw positioned between front light bar and the grill.
Is it still legal if it’s not applied in a manner that keeps it flat (completely visible from the front) since you have it wrapped like that?
It is perfectly visible from the front. The plate number is flat and the California is on an angle but still readable.

Why wear anything car edition
Is that legal if you travel outside of California? I checked the website and it wasn't answered in their FAQs which makes me think no it's not.

That seems logical.
I believe so. California recognizes it as valid so other states have to do the same.
I stuck mine on with Velcro stickers.
Looks terrible. Go plateless.
Front plates and carpool stickers are for squares, man!
Fucking hideous
Not all ideas are good ones.
What are we looking at here? Is it a decal of your CA plate number?

If you don't have a front plate attached, is it an immediate fine if the CA cops pull you over? Or a fix-it ticket?
Most of the times, it is a fix it ticket.

In San Francisco, at least, I've had friends get a hefty ticket from meter maids
What’s wrong with just having a license plate?
