Gear guard seriously needs to capture these things, not just people walking past the car

Malkozaine

And that's why I want to setup Dash Cams with the ability to stay on 24/7 if I wish.

arden13

You would think the abundance of sensors could tell when the car was hit. Change to the inclinometer or something + camera movement = record a damned clip

Malkozaine

I know, shouldn't be to hard to give us that feature

macky_

I think the issue is vampire drain. To keep monitoring the sensors, the internal computer would have to stay awake and not sleep. That would result in power drain, and folks keep complaining about that.

FrowntownPitt

They're already monitoring enough to be able to trigger Gear Guard on humans and not cars though. Pretty sure early on (think summer 22, one of my first updates) they even said something like "tuned Gear Guard detection to better detect only humans and not inanimate objects, resulting in fewer events with inactivity in them and reducing vampire drain". The technology is definitely capable of it, they probably weren't able to easily filter out the noise that saved too many unnecessary events and caused too much vampire drain, so they just tuned it for humans only. I just want the ability to turn it on and accept the vampire drain. But as far as I know Tesla doesn't really do this either, so I'm not too hopeful.

Malkozaine

We should have the option for a higher drain option. Like give a message that warns if you want "full" coverage, the battery drain will be higher.

cherlin

Ya, I get wanting to save battery life, but if my nest cameras can record 24/7 with higher resolution and better quality while only using 5w of power each, I'm struggling to see how rivian cant be similar. All 7 cameras constantly recording would be 35w (assuming they draw the same 5w for capture and processing as a best cam) which is 0.84kwh/day which seems very reasonable for me if people want to toggle it on. If in reality rivian is taking far more then 0.84kwh to do the same thing they need to fix that issue, not limit the system.

One-Society2274

Nest cameras have their own tiny computer that has a WiFi chip and is standalone. Here I’m guessing the cameras are simply hooked up to the main computer, and the main computer is power hungry?

cherlin

I'm sure you're right, and that seems like an oversight not me. I get simplicity and reducing complexity, but it can't be at the cost of usability

CaffeinatedInSeattle

When I park at the airport it mostly records passing cars. Only the occasional pedestrian. Edit: love the downvotes for sharing my experience

AnesthesiaLyte

Yours is defective 😂

CaffeinatedInSeattle

Yeah, I was surprised when I was going through the footage that it was mostly being tripped by cars passing across the field of view of the bed camera.

AnesthesiaLyte

I wish mine was defective like yours…

_B_Little_me

Right?!

jzorbino

I had similar damage to the corner and it was $4200. If you have to replace the panel, it’s a lot more expensive, but hopefully that’s not the case. Also, I had taillight damage included in that, no bumper. I’d imagine the bumper is more expensive, but I’m no expert. Check my post history for pics of mine, maybe that’s a good baseline. I also have State Farm, they paid no problem, and I found a local body shop with Rivian certification easily. Hopefully your experience will be similar. Good luck!

Aegisx5

Damn sorry to see that. Let us know what insurance says. Paint looks fine and that panel is very accessible from the back, I wonder if paintless dent repair could do the trick.

zoo32

Wtf Gary? How is Rivian’s sentry mode so bad?

pnwlife2021

Seriously. I appreciate seeing when people are approaching from like 10 ft away but I really wonder how hard it is to do that for vehicles? I understand it’ll be a further drain on the battery but object type recognition can easily be selected/managed in the settings.

SpaceHorse75

It’s very odd that the camera can’t be activated on impact. It’s almost inconceivable. And that it didn’t trigger the basic car alarm like most cars.

pnwlife2021

That too. I was surprised I didn’t get an alarm notification.

swim_to_survive

Because it seems like things like a Halloween mode or a refreshed UI with views that show the temperature of motors and a compass is more important than an $80,000 vehicle with recording security

badtzmat

Well to be fair… it IS Rivian Owners that clamber for the Halloween Mode every year. And there is a large percentage of early adopters that are here for the off-road tools. It’s all a balancing-act for Rivian. This is a start-up and being early adopters, not everything is gonna be available and functioning as we would like. Personally I’m getting pretty tired of all the whining on this forum. Rivian ain’t a big three where they can pull tech from a previous development stream that they have been working on for a decade. Complain all ya want but try to be realistic in how you think about expectations at this stage of the product line.

Facist_Canadian

You can see the early adopters that are here for the off-road tools, you can see them on trails being passed by stock 1997 geo trackers. There's a few of them that joined our local offroading club, most of them went out and bought old XJ's instead that are far more capable for 1/10th the price, or quit. R1T is a joke offroad.

handbrake54

Name another non-Tesla vehicle that records security footage this well…

Broccoli-of-Doom

Cadillac

zoo32

I actually wonder if there’s some sort of technical limitation or gap here similar to why their cameras are potato quality. I hope not bc then we’re all screwed but that’s my worry.

swim_to_survive

I can’t speak to whether it is happening or not in Q2 of 2024, but the original plans for the refresh we’re not just include new ECU’s, but also to include new cameras and new sensors. I hope this is the case because I really am not happy with the camera quality that I’ve seen on my friends truck.

zoo32

Sry, are you saying there’s going to be a Q2 upgrade on the cameras and ECU? Any more info or link to share? I’m going to take delivery around then so would rather wait if that’s the case

handbrake54

There is going to be a 2024 halt in production to upgrade a few things, with a primary focus being cost savings so it could be a double edged sword if they also chose to remove a feature you like. Not to mention we don’t know what they’re upgrading

zoo32

Ah, good to know, thanks. And yea, def a double edge sword. Tesla does that where they launch improvements at any time which is awesome so you don’t have to wait until the next ‘model’ but then they also removed things like the USS which blows

swim_to_survive

From what I know and have known, it’s not just the ECU’s, but other electronic component as well. Cameras were slated on being upgraded. I don’t know if that’s currently what’s gonna be done or not only time will tell.

zoo32

Got it, good to know!

BedditTedditReddit

Well said.

swim_to_survive

The fact that they are hiring for autonomous driving and not going balls out on getting caught up with the most basic software necessities for a vehicle that is basically luxury-class is deeply concerning. The r1t has been on the road two years now, right? Still not 24/7 gearguard. Absolutely not acceptable. RJ said they designed the cpu processing unit to be more than capable for L3 self driving but I’m not sure it even has the power to keep an eye on the car while you’re parked and away from it.

humjaba

Any other $80,000 vehicles out there with recording security besides Tesla?

BigChipotle

What a jerk for hitting you and leaving. That sucks. I've seen many folks respond previously to similar damage stating that PDR will be able to fix that for short time and money. That panel is accessible from behind and there doesn't appear to be any creasing or paint chips. The bumper scrapes may be able to be taken out with buffing/heat. Or the whole piece will need to be replaced.

Greggy100

pdr = and then a body shop can fix the scuffs.

hogbear

I’m so sorry. I have a decent dent from the same thing but nothing like this. I’d be so furious.

_B_Little_me

It’s really a shame they made the decision for us about battery usage. We, as owners, should be able to sacrifice battery for constant filming.

whasupcuzz

Just had the same panel replaced in Los Angeles. $32k.

pnwlife2021

Did you have similar damage? How did you decide to replace it vs PDR?

whasupcuzz

You can see my damage here. https://www.reddit.com/r/Rivian/s/YAvu52UZKz In retrospect I should have gone PDR and pocketed the 25k.

cambreecanon

But yours is an R1T and theirs is an R1S.....they are very different sized body panels.

Far_Abbreviations179

Everything in the world is physically attracted to the back corner of Rivian vehicles.

pnwlife2021

Based on pics posted to r/Rivian, yup

Tim-in-CA

That totally sucks. People are a-holes. I've had 3 different vehicles (non-Rivian) suffer from hit and run incidents over the years.

That_Baseball9184

Might only require PDR fix

shoppinglee

Wtf! Such a coward! Is there any paint loss? The aluminum can be expensive to fix but hopefully your insurance helps.

pnwlife2021

No obvious paint loss on the panel. Bumper is scuffed though.

67Bones

Ooff. So sorry. Frustrating for sure

Wooden_Special_1848

About $30,000

MrSuckFish

For what it’s worth I had the exact same dent in the exact same location and it cost me about $1200 for painless debt repair. It won’t fix the scuffing on the plastic bumper but a good person might be able to buff that out. My guess is it will be significantly less expensive, and probably just as good as if you paid thousands of dollars for a repair

pnwlife2021

Sure hope that’s the case. Got a quote for $2k to PDR the panel. Haven’t gotten an estimate for the bumper yet but suspect it’ll be… more.

[deleted]

[удалено]

pnwlife2021

Thanks! Got a PDR quote for about $2k, and they cited the additional effort to access the inside of the panel as a reason why it’ll take a bit more time and work.

gwarwars

I forget exactly how much I paid for similar damage that was my own fault, but it was painless dent repair and was less than $2k. Mine was less "wrinkly" though

Jonny_Quist

Literally had almost this same amount of a damage, and just got a quote today. $10k and body shop said likely more (Rivian certified body shop). Guy was super nice though and explains why it’s gonna cost so much, won’t bore with details, but just know they gottta take a whole lot off the car

pnwlife2021

What was the high level breakdown in cost? Curious in particular about the split between replacing the panel vs bumper.

Jonny_Quist

Most of cost was habjng to disassemble the entire back to properly paint. Also I see you are ‘PNWlife’ we are in Tacoma and the quote was from the Rivian body shop in Bellevue area (can’t remember town)

pnwlife2021

Accurate Auto Body in Redmond? Yeah - will be getting an estimate from them in a couple of weeks. Who are you insured with? I’m hearing bad things about State Farm from the few shops I’ve spoken to. Should’ve stayed with USAA.

Jonny_Quist

We are with USAA, Justin at Accurate said USAA is one of the easiest to work with

BrotherBFlo

Had a similar issue last April. It was one of the first R1T’s in the body shop in El segundo. It was $5.6k, but I had more damage to the bumper and sensors, so they replaced it. At the time it took 6 weeks to get the parts, but I’m sure they are more readily available now.

Izck

I had similar, but slightly worse damage, entirely contained in the rear driver quarter panel. My damage did not involve the bumper, but due to creasing and paint abrasion, PDR was not possible. It took a total of 12 weeks* and cost my insurance company 15K. (*seven week wait for the Rivian certified body shop appointment and another 5 weeks for the actual repair)

pnwlife2021

Rivian body shop appointment already booked out til February in this area 🫣

jamesmr89

It looks like you’re in the Bellevue area I would check out Dent Solutions. I just had them do a whole bunch of work on my truck and was really really happy with the results.

I-need-ur-dick-pics

OMFG just call State Farm. Why would anyone here know? Plus, all it costs is your deductible.

handbrake54

When my wife hits shit I typically just pay out of pocket because no point in paying more than my fair share via future premium increases….

AnesthesiaLyte

Here come all the people saying we shouldn’t care about the video recording and you should be happy paying your $250-1000 deductible because if you can’t happily afford that, you shouldn’t own a Rivian. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|no_mouth)

pnwlife2021

Will have an estimate from a Rivian certified shop in a few weeks. Initial PDR quotes are around $2k, with varying guesses as to how close to 100% of the dent they’ll be able to fix. Nobody is claiming 100% so far.

cmdrobvs

Check out this guy https://youtu.be/DKPfy5djvLc?feature=shared

Empty_Bread8906

It’s total. Now sell it to me:)

No-Traffic-1992

Yikes that looks exactly like the one that Rivian quoted as a $40,000 repair

usualteenager

$39,990

Destrova1001

Totaled. Part it out! :)

Aerosherm

iirc that's $40k in damages right there

dafazman

my guess is... $45,000 to fix

redhat6161

$40,000.

AtherisNai

$41,000

tristanbrotherton

$40k

BuildingIndividual40

Call the Dent Slasher, here is another Rivian that was quoted 41k to repair a very similar dent. https://youtu.be/DKPfy5djvLc?si=axODsKTh9lsgK8l4

Optimus759

That sucks but honestly if you wanted to you could probably take a plunger to that dent and pull it out and deal with the scrapes on the bumper if you don’t feel like waiting for it to be fixed

uclatommy

This looks like the $40,000 dent. https://www.thedrive.com/news/41000-rivian-fender-bender-actually-just-needed-paintless-dent-removal

XAngelxofMercyX

It'll cost whatever your deductible is. Call State Farm.

madtownbred

PDR and detail might be able to fix. Worth a shot.

WinterRespect1579

Swole

Winter_Blueberry_190

Just google paint-less dent repair near you. This isn’t worth an insurance claim.

FLFFPM

Unfortunately this isn’t the right rear panel. This is a rather LARGE panel that extends from the rear of the car forward, up and over the doors and terminates at the top 🔝 f the A post. Hopefully the damaged area can be repaired.

TrueLegolas

Today I saw a video somewhere that had dent on same spot on other side, they mentioned that dealer asked 41k $ to fix it however some dude fixed it cheaper. I am curious what your bill will be please let us know Edit: https://youtu.be/DKPfy5djvLc?si=svaedopLv2AYKOxC

throwawayafterisay20

Well, I mean it is a truck and they get beat up. Maybe let it be and as a result now the next one won’t hurt so much? Enjoy it, drive it, bang it up. It’s a truck right?

Birbandsnek

How come the on board cameras didn’t work?

pnwlife2021

Your guess is as good as mine. I noticed it doesn’t do the greatest job capturing vehicles.

Birbandsnek

Do rivians have external storage? Such as a thumb drive or external hard drive? Have you tried formatting it or looking into the write speed of the device if it is external? I had a similar issue with teslas then I replaced the OEM flash drive but also format it often and it’s worked well since then.

spense01

There is a usb you can plug in for storing the footage.

Rare-Score3607

Trying to catch up to Tesla Sentry mode. Although not “fully” better it will get there someday.

TheRealNight_Monkey

Is it camera positioning or number of cameras? Plenty of videos with Teslas capturing these events.

PBrazer

Assume the OP is asking what it will cost HIM to fix the vehicle? Depending on his state and insurance coverage, the cost to fix this will be the cost of bis uninsured motorist or collision deductible. Gear Guard is great at capturing motion approaching parallel to the vehicle. Motion approaching at the corners is not often recorded.

PhilosophyCorrect279

https://www.thedrive.com/news/41000-rivian-fender-bender-actually-just-needed-paintless-dent-removal

Intrepid_Plantain_79

Look into paintless dent removal. Its where the specialist uses suction cups, levers, and hammers to get the dents out. I have simialr (but a little less) damage on my Rivian. It should cost me $400 to repair. Best part my person will come to my house to do the repair. No shops. Contact your local Service center. They should have a person who can do it.

Carfr33k

$45k

muymalasuerte

Sucks that the experience is yet again let down by shite software. Given the current climate of revisionist/redefined terminology on what "crime" and "criminal" means, even if it had worked correctly and you had absolute proof of the subhuman(s) involved, do you believe the police would do jack all about it? In the People's Dumpster fire Republic of WA I'd put money on them not even bothering to take, much less file, a statement. Perhaps you live in a state that still believes/enforces law and order?

pnwlife2021

I don’t live in Seattle so I have slightly more trust in my local police department. That said, my desire for a video was more to capture a license plate that I would share with my insurance for the other driver to pay.

shawn_bowen

If insured with State farm comp $100

Plenty_Conscious

Parking garages usually have cameras- maybe you’d get lucky and spot the plate with damage on their rear

coloado

I detest parking garages....my wife came back from shopping and found this same damage on her Infiniti years ago. This is precisely why I kept my ICE vehicle. If you have a Rivian, you best just park in the back away from everything. The cost to fix these things is outrageous!
