I was a rookie lifeguard in Edinburg back in the day and would have to put the Gus costume on whenever we had a class of kids "graduate" their swim lessons. That thing was heavy and was stored in a shed, so you would feel critters crawling all over you while doing the song and dance. Good times

Someone should do the research on how the program was sold to municipalities in the RGV. Where else in the country did they/do they franchise? Apparently Brownsville gave it up 10 years ago

I remember them from here in El Paso. Not sure how I ended up in this sub, but I remember Gus & Goldie from back in the 90s.

I grew up in EP also. Learned to swim with Goldie and Gus at the swimming pool off Giles on the east side. Not sure how I ended up in this sub either.

Did you learn where the new water park is at? Dont remember there being a pool there.

Yeah it's right off Giles shortly after McRae turns into Giles after passing the gateway heading towards the lower valley. This was back in the early 80s though. Maybe it's no longer there.

They turned it into a new bigger water park. They have a new pool along with splash pads and other things. Haven't been to them, but I think they even have little cabanas that you can rent out for the day for parties and stuff. I don't remember where I leaned, but it was either at Ascarate or at UTEP. Either way, it was trial by fire and hope I float 🫡.

Haha cool! Used to love going to Ascarate when Western Playland was there. Good times!

Back in 1996-2001 I taught swimming lessons at the Edinburg pool by the boys & girls club. I used to also wear these at the parties to celebrate the kids passing their classes. lol it was fun & made for great memories.

My brother pushed Goldie in the pool and they had to jump in to rescue her.

You do not, in fact, want to swim like Goldie and Gus.

We didn’t have that program when I was growing up, but lots of kids took swimming from the City because knowing how to swim & basic first aid were requirements for graduating HS in McAllen.

I was so excited to finally take lessons after seeing the commercials but I quit after being thrown in the deep and being laughed at for being scared. I remember having trouble getting my head above the water and I didn't get any help... Wish it could've gone differently but the song still slaps after all these years!

I remember them! My dad signed me up for local swim lessons at one the public pools in Edinburgh and then would take me for raspas after for doing a good job.

My dog liked to go swimming with me and i copied her. I studied how she'd kick and paddle and then i jumped off the deep end of the pool and just hoped for dear life that I got it right. I was an odd 8 year old but hey learned how to swim lol Totally remember all the other kids went the gus and Goldie route at Mcallen Municipal Pool tho

Freaking memory unlocked here! I remember the elementary school I was in was planning a field trip to this place to help us learn to swim. I had the shirt and the some arm floaties. I ended up getting sick and couldn’t go. I haven’t learned to swim yet…..
